Top Selling Comics & Publisher Market Share: April 2014

Tons of numbers from April for all the data-nerds out there!

The numbers from the second month of the new year are in! Diamond Comic Distributors has compiled the data from April and placed into awesome tables for math nerds, like us, to stare and enjoy. Let's get right down to the numbers.

Last month, Marvel took a bigger lead in both dollar share and unit share over DC, when compared to last month's numbers.

Also, it's nice to see Valiant with their own spot on the list, even though they don't print nearly as many books as the other companies.

This month's top two books is a no-brainer.

Both AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #1 and SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #31 taking the top two spots just makes sense. However, DC ended up taking 6 of the top 10 spots, 4 of which were BATMAN ETERNAL and 5 involving Batman and Scott Snyder.

Image dominates the top 10 trades, taking 7 of the top 10 spots. SEX CRIMINALS takes the top spot, with all three volumes of SAGA also on there and WALKING DEAD VOL 1 still hanging in there.

Here's how many books each company shipped out for the month.

How do they calculate this information? It all starts at the comic book shop.

Data for Diamond’s sales charts — which include the monthly market shares and all top product charts — are compiled by Diamond Comic Distributors from a universe of over 3,500 comic book specialty shops located in North America and around the world. The account base includes brick-and-mortar comic book specialty shops, Internet merchants, and other specialty stores.

Unit and dollars sales are calculated based upon orders invoiced and shipped to Diamond accounts during January to December 2013, which comprises initial pre-orders, advance reorders, and reorders, minus any copies that are received back from a title marked as returnable.

What are your thoughts on all these numbers? What's your predictions for this month?

So... Did Amazing Spider-man really sold 700 thousand copies, just as Marvel Hyped?

And I'm so happy to see again Valiant is getting some deserved love! Good for us!

Walking Dead is truly a monster, how the hell is it still there

Posted by Jonny_Anonymous

YES! Vaillant made the list!

Also Pretty Deadly in the top 10 trades!

Dayum, the gap between DC and Marvel is really getting extreme now.

Posted by sagejonathan

Valiant got a spot! And all that Batman in the top 10 is depressing.

Posted by 2cool4fun

Damn...DC is getting less and less every month, which makes me sad seeing as how they are getting better & better every month.

Posted by illmatic4177

@the_stegman: Marvel is dominating, they are just cranking out great books. Image the gap between the two companies without Batman lol.

Posted by CaptainHoopla

I just hope more people buying the Image trades understand they also need to be buying some monthlies. These great series will only get cancelled or ended prematurely if the singles don't sell well enough. Although they and the creators may be comfortable enough with a series if they know trade sells will make up for low monthly numbers. I'm just happy that creator owned series seem to be thriving right now.

DC put down the bottle.... You don't need that. You're better than that. Pull yourself together. Batman isn't going to hold your hand forever.

YES! Valiant finally did it!

Posted by k4tzm4n

Very happy to see Valiant on here. Guess RAI was a hit for them.

The lack of Justice League #30 and Forever Evil #7 are probably the main reason DC lost the percentage point from last month.

Posted by Ekimus81

@illmatic4177: Marvel cranking good books? Which ones? lol The only reason i purchase a Marvel book is because the artist they have or writer and lately i dont even purchase the books because they are always so darn expensive.

Posted by AlKusanagi

See? This is why Warner Brothers won't take a chance on other characters without including Batman.

I propose the next event be "Batman: Year None," where they go a full year without releasing a single Batman title to force people to give other DC characters a chance.

It's called 52.

It's because Marvel books are 4$ while DC has few $4 books.

@madeinbangladesh:

Again said Marvel doesnt have any "Great" titles in my opinion all the heroes i loved from Marvel have been destroy by their own writers within..... Best example. Jason Aaron was doing trying to make a great run on Wolverine and the X-Men and Brian Bendis had to come over and screw that up for the fans........ sooooo thats why i have no faith or love for the "great" Marvel comics. Maybe the only thing that has kept me from really say bad things about Marvel is their movies.

Edited by illmatic4177

@ekimus81: Have you not noticed all the great reviews their books are getting or how every week the Comics You Need section is dominated by Marvel comics? The reason they are selling so many books in spite of 3.99 pricing is cause they are churning out great books. Aside from their normal big guns, they are developing quality titles for characters that dont usually hold their own books like Moonknight, Iron Fist, Black Widow, Magneto, ect. Hell your on Comic Vine, the site has routroutinely said the same things Im saying now. They are flat out killing it right now, commercially and critically. And Marvel pricing only helps with dollar share, they only put out one more book then DC and dominate the unit share because they are just selling a lot more books then DC, despite higher prices! Last month DC put out 4 more books then Marvel and Marvel still killed them in total books sold. I honestly feel like most of the people that say Marvel isnt putting out good stuff have not even bothered to read that much of it, but yall are in a small minority these days anyway and to each their own I guess.

lol, so true :)

Still, at least Cyborg and the Metal Men made the top 5.

DC is slipping and has been for a while. Nice to see marvel on top though. Also nice to see batman have 5 spots. This is why DC has so many batman books people, they sell!

@illmatic4177: I've also noticed that Comic Vine has basically shunted their DC reviews to a handful of titles. 4 DC vs. 13 Marvel this week, with similar output of books. I mentioned this before to Comic Vine's twitter but they were extremely dismissive.

@illmatic4177:

Ok first let me say i have given Marvel more than chance and in multiple times as I have given DC the chance as well. Marvel likes WAY to much to exploded one character or a group of heroes like Avengers, Captain America, Deadpool, Wolverine or X-men. Now we know DC would the same as they do it with Batman and Superman. With that said DC, Vertigo, Image or Boom! has made stories that caught my attention more than Marvel. Don't get me wrong i do collect some Marvel stories but i end up more disappointing than happy. If you think Marvel is doing great and ComicVine like to believe it or saying in their reviews im happy for you guys that you can find comics that make you happy. After 14 yrs collecting comics and different ones Marvel hasn't surprise me and i dont expect them to do so anytime soon. Glad everyone is enjoying their stories. Im not being sarcastic or mean i promise.

I thought I was the only one that noticed! They barely review anything from DC anymore. It's actually kinda funny because I remember when they used to review really obscure things like Demon Knights and Dial H for Hero while they lasted.

Posted by asjmooney

Sad and surprised to see DC slipping when me think they are doing some amazing stuff at the moment.

Posted by illmatic4177

@grandharrier: I can only figure its because Marvel is selling a lot of comics, and really good ones at the moment. I mean I clearly think Marvel is putting out a superior product over DC theys days, but Marvel is my first comic love so maybe Im bias. But I by no means hate DC, I collect 4 of there books right now, and in the past when Marvel has not had so many good titles the number of DC titles I collect tends to go up a little. Still balance and diversity of comics reviewed is important and I also noticed the lack of DC comics reviewed. But Marvel made up 69% of the top 30 comics last month, and over 70% this month, so you kinda gotta expect it.

@illmatic4177:

You understand it. People have their opinions and that's fine but they really need to understand their opinions. So many DC fanboys (no one in this comment section they all seem to be non fanboys just people with a prefrence) want to go on and on about how DC comics are better right and deny and straight up lie at times to try and defend DC and come up with alternatives to Marvel high sells instead of just simply accepting Marvel is putting out better content right now. So much of the New 52 is crap.

What other reason to pick up a comic book is there?

Posted by NewComicGuy

Marvel and DC make good comics. The quality gap is certainly not large. The difference in numbers is price and the fact that Marvel movies are bringing in a lot of new readers.

That's nothing to fault them for or use as an excuse but it's the truth.

So in short, Batman Eternal was a good move by DC ;)

gee willikers batman

Posted by MasterBelmont

Marvel wins again! Should've expected, since they had some big stuff this month and they're making quite a few really great series right now. Also, love finally seeing Valiant up there, since they're my current favorite publisher and deserve all the money and praise they get.

Posted by Grey56

Good on Marvel, I honestly do not want them to go out of business. Same holds true for all the publishers; the diversity helps everyone involved with a better end product.

I will say it again though: It's disconcerting how few Marvel titles the wife and I get each month. I'm up to two with Moon Knight and Uncanny and the wife is reading the regular X-Men - but there are 11 DC titles we have between us.

This is to say nothing of the Image and other 3rd party publishers that we have another 12 titles from. Yet this is nothing new; market trends have been up and down for both Big2 publishers with Marvel almost always outselling by volume. It's a trend that dates back to the late silver and early bronze.

I don't think anyone should lose sleep over their publisher going the way of the dodo nor does it really merit any company wearing their arm out patting themselves on the back for a month of sales reflected largely by vendor order and not necessarily actual floor sales. Remember folks; point of sale for us readers is not what Diamond or other distributors are reporting. Food for thought.

@illmatic4177: when you release 5 new #1s each month of course they are going to sell like crazy

Posted by bloggerboy

I'm calling it. DC is getting ready for another reboot. The New 52 is FUBAR!

Posted by TheBlackHood

Marvel is simply better at capturing both the fans that like events and the casual fans that will pick up number ones. I mean, Marvel has relaunched at least two established books every month for the last year. By the time the new year roles around they can relaunch the books that made it to issue 12. Another problem is that DC only has 1 hero that sells no matter what - Batman. On the other hand, Marvel has Spiderman AND Wolverine. It makes me laugh though when people will say that DC is riding only on Batman when Marvel does the same with the other two. You know there is something wrong when you make a team completely devoted to minority characters but then shoehorn Spiderman into it. DC really dropped the ball with Forever Evil and that doesn't help. If you're only going to do 1 major event a year, unlike Marvel that does 3-4, you can't screw up the scheduling and expect the event to matter to fans.

Posted by feedonatreefrog

@theblackhood: The event does matter to fans. Sales for Forever Evil were really strong.

Edited by illmatic4177

@newcomicguy: Marvel pricing does help increase the dollar share gap, but they are selling way more issues total despite DC's cheaper pricing. That says a lot. And Marvel movies are not bringing in substantial amounts of new readers, nobody I know has started reading comics because of the movies. More importantly look at the numbers, comics sell less then they did 15 to 20 years ago. I know Marvel haters like to use the movie excuse lol. The truth is a greater portion of people that buy comics perfer the product Marvel is putting out.

I love that Valiant is finally getting the respect it deserves!! They have both writers and artists that want to be there for the industry, not for the money. So it is nice to see that get some sort of recognition.

Also, I really wonder where DC would be without Batman? I collected DC's Team 7 thinking they were going to do a whole Wildstorm universe tie-in, but no. I really wish they would just remake WildC.A.T.S, Gen13, and Savage Dragon.

When is Batman not in the top?

What will DC do when Scott Snyder leaves Batman?

I think it's because DC has a tendency to outright cancel a book before it gains any traction or a sudden shift in creative teams before a book can gain momentum. I think they mentioned it during one of the podcasts how frustrated they were with direction changes midway through the New 52 experiment.

Posted by Akindoodle

@illmatic4177: Amen. I tend to favour DC but at the moment, there are better stories across the street. Marvel's doing better. Period.

@night_thrasher: I can definitely relate. The few that are still ongoing I dropped because of those weird changes. The many that I did enjoy are now defunct. Yes DC, way to keep the fans happy.

Posted by Night Thrasher

@akindoodle: RIP; Threshold, Demon Knights

the two that really ticked me off

Posted by Akindoodle

@night_thrasher: DEVASTATED does not begin to describe how I felt about Demon Knights. And now, they've all been shoved aside for HeyPresto! Constantine who can't possibly be in too many titles because he's the Batman of magic. I don't even know where any of the Knights are in the C.21 except Madame X and she's even barely there....*sigh*... I miss Ex and Ystin. And X and Jason. And X and Etrigan. And Sarah. AND VANDAL EFFIN' SAVAGE! Dammit, they were all awesome! Dredging up a lot of bad feelings here Thrasher. But you've reminded me that I still need to get my hands on Threshold

I learned that I have to by Image comics in trades. The stories are too good to wait a month to figure out what happens next, I'd rather read it all in one volume and wait a few months.
