Tony Daniel's DETECTIVE COMICS Run Comes to an End

The writer has announced he will no longer be working on the title.

There has been a bit of controversy when it comes to DETECTIVE COMICS and Tony Daniel. I believe people are pretty much in agreement over his artistic skills. It's sometimes been said that when he works on projects where he is both writing and drawing, they suffer a little. Personally, I enjoyed BATTLE FOR THE COWL even though the outcome was predictable. For me, it was about seeing the journey in getting there. DETECTIVE COMICS has been one of the top selling New 52 titles. Frankly, it's been one of the top selling titles period. Despite this, many have questioned the writing.

Today, via Facebook, Tony Daniel announced the final issue he has written and drawn will be issue #12. He will be only providing the art for issue #0.

No Caption Provided
It's been a long and adventurous journey for me, but there are other projects in the pipeline that I've been itching to do and I felt the need to scratch the itch. Next week DC will reveal some information on what one of the projects is I'm involved with.

Daniel went on to mention that he's also prepping for a something he's wanted to do for a while and is due in 2013. It is currently "top secret" and most likely won't be revealed until the Fall.

No word on who will be replacing Daniel as the writer or artist.

Sad to say this doesn't surprise me at all. I'm interested in who comes on board.

And there was dancing in the streets.

I felt like this run started out alright, and I dug the kind of hard boiled noir feel he was going for in the book, but ultimately the book was too mediocre to keep my attention. Here's to hoping he continues as artist on the book after the zero issue. I really do like his art, he just can't write well.

Best news I've heard all day. All we need now is DC to take a long hard look at SUPERMAN and decide what the hell to do with it.

I don't find myself really disappointed by this news, mostly just intrigued what's gonna happen with the creative team.

Daniel wasn't as terrible as people made him out to be, but don't get me wrong, he wasn't great. The odd thing was, he started out actually quite good, and slowly got worse. Life After Death was great, and Battle for the Cowl wasn't half bad either. But since then he went downhill. Then he jumped back up a bit, but his Detective Comics run has never been more that so-so.

PLEASE can we get Paul Dini to replace him? PLEASE DC?

The  book was average to below average, but I did like Tony's art. Whoever comes in next they can't make the book worst than Dark Knight...can they?

Consider it only below Snyder's book out of the Bat family, so I dont see why people are cheering at this.

Reading comic books is a luxury and a costly one at that most of the time. Money used for comics could be better used for food, clothes, other entertainment purposes etc.
So when I classify a comic book writer I only see Good or Bad. I really don't classify them as average or any other shade. If I am spending money on comic books I will only buy the good.

If me reading the headline for this story and then exclaiming "Yes!" happens, then you know your writing sucked. I'm not going to miss Tony Daniel one bit on Batman, his art's great, but I don't think he could write his way out of a wet paper bag. I thought Battle for the Cowl was pretty good, but after that, he just turned into $***. I didn't like him on Hawkman either. Hopefully DC'll give him a title that he's actually good at writing, or a title that I just don't give a f*** about so I don't come into contact with it.

To be honest I don't even like Tony's art either. But I've been saying this for awhile that the art sucks on Batman, Detective and Dark Knight. Batman & Robin is much better than the three and Batman INC has the best art of any Bat book. This is all my opinion of course and don't think I just like cartoony styles as I don't since I loved the art by Jason Fabok in Batman Annual #1 and he should be on Batman comics or Detective full time as his art is awesome also.

Also Detective has had the worst writing along side Dark Knight, even though Batman looks odd in Batman comics the story of it has me hooked.

Detective Comics was one of the books I started reading from issue one, but I dropped it after I think issue 7. Daniel's writing just wasn't up to the high standards being set by Snyder on Batman and Tomasi on Batman and Robin, so I think it's probably for the best. That being said, I hope his next project turns out better. Like everyone else I'm curious to see who will replace him, both as a writer and and artist. The pre-New 52 had some fantastic writers the last number of years, like Ed Brubaker, Greg Rucka and Paul Dini, so hopefully they can find someone of that caliber to take over.

Finally, this book has been so boring. I hope whoever takes over remembers the title while writing. Dectective comics should be about Batman solving crimes that only someone of his caliber can solve.

I am amazed at how aggressively DC is managing its line since the reboot. Amazing job DC. Hope the next writer is as good as Snyder, Tomasi, and Hurwitz.

Now if only they would fix Batman Inc (Kyle Higgins! hint, hint).

It would be nice if Morrison would at least pretend that there was a reboot of the DCnU and write his stories accordingly. What happened to every Batman story counts? Apparently that means obscure stories that most people want to forget, not current continuity.

I have not. But I did recall his Penguin run and it was pretty good.

I meant TDK before night of owls. I read the night of owls crossover and I liked it. Infact I dare say every single one of the crossover was pretty good.

Well, with Greg Hurwitz (I think that's how you spell it?) taking over TDK, Detective is now the worst Bat-book, and considering Detective should be a flagship title (the company is named after it!) it shouldn't suck. So, is Hurwitz taking over Detective? I guess we'll see.

Not sure I'd agree about the last 4, since.... they HAVE stopped before and been renumbered. Though since Geoff took over I don't think Green Lantern will stop. Even though Superman was 'ended' a while back, it was still continued as 'Adventures of Superman.' I think the first 4 are the only ones eternally safe. But I am inclined to agree since the New 52 started.

I actually though Daniel's run on Detective was good. He wasn't making the most memorable stories, but the wirting was generally solid at the very least. I'm a bit a bit disappointed he is leaving.
