Thoughts on Ant-Man The Movie

I thought this would never get made...

Time to put a foot in my mouth. Ever since I first heard/read that Ant-Man was being made into a feature length film, I was extremely excited yet skeptical. I never thought this film was going to get made, and for a while, I thought I was right. What seemed like 5 or 6 years ago, I remember reading about this online, and soon after, I saw it pop up on imdb. Edgar Wright became attached, and for years, we heard nothing. I saw Marvel movies explode onto the big screen, yet there was no new information about the film.

I've seen things like this happen in the film industry before. The most memorable is the 10 years that Alien 3 spent in pre-production hell before getting released as a sub-par film. That resonates with me every time I hear new info about this film, even though I have a lot of faith in Edgar Wright who co-wrote the script and is directing the film. I love his work, and I personally think he would do great on this film. I personally don't think that this film will do well with mass audiences, unless it's just that darned funny. With Wright behind the helm, that is easily a possibility though. His recent interview revealed some new information though.

Edgar Wright spoke with Box Office Magazine, and the topic of Ant-Man came up. He stated that he hasn't worked on the second draft yet, but that's only because he's waiting for Scott Pilgrim to come out before he moves forward. According to Wright, Marvel enjoyed the first draft of the script, and it's comedic, on the same level as Iron Man is. He wants to do something different than the traditional superhero origin film.

If you remember a couple weeks ago, G-Man, Babs, and I (if you could hear my horrid robotic voice) talked about the upcoming Ant-Man movie on the ComicVine podcast. G-Man and I both shared the opinion that we'd love to see Eric O'Grady version of Ant-Man. To sum it up quick, Eric O'Grady was an agent of SHIELD who found the Ant-Man suit, stole it, and well... the picture above sums up a lot of it. The book 12 issue series, written by Robert Kirkman, was incredibly humorous, and a fresh look at a mantle character. If you're going to make a comedic Ant-Man film, to me, Eric O'Grady fits the bill.

There's a lot they could do with this film, and I still can't believe it's getting made. I'm not angry or mad because I think it will fail, I'm pleasantly surprised since Ant-Man (More so O'Grady and Hank Pym... I'm not a Scott Lang fan) is one of my favorite Marvel characters. What do you guys think and what would you like to see happen in this film?
