Thor Trailer: Scene Breakdown and Analysis

What does the newly released trailer tell us that we don't already know?

Paramount, Marvel and Odin have finally officially released the trailer to Thor. After an extended look that premiered at San Diego Comic-Con (which later was leaked online for less than a day), we now have the luxury of watching the trailer over and over to see if there is anything we can pick out of it. Kenneth Branagh has the task of telling the story of Asgardian warrior while also bridging the gap between the Iron Man films and 2012's The Avengers. Let's go through the trailer and see what more we can pull from it.

No Caption Provided
The film will be take place on Asgard and Midgard (Earth). It's unclear if the movie will begin on Asgard or if we'll see flashbacks as the trailer begins with Thor on Earth in S.H.I.E.L.D. custody.
 == TEASER ==

No Caption Provided
At first I thought the top view was of Thor (Chris Hemsworth) in a holding facility run by S.H.I.E.L.D. Looking carefully you can see that in the center is Thor's hammer,  Mjolnir. At the end of Iron Man 2, we know that it somehow ends up in New Mexico. The structure was built around it and S.H.I.E.L.D. scientists are most likely trying to analyze it. You get a feel that it's even under quarantine.

No Caption Provided
Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) returns and is trying to get some answers out of this mysterious stranger. At this point in the trailer, we're unsure how Thor ended up in his custody. Coulson is questioning where Thor received the training that allowed him to easily deal with his S.H.I.E.L.D. agents.

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Again at this point, we have to assume that somehow Thor was in their custody and attempted to escape. He got pretty far but ended up back inside so Coulson could question him. Thor isn't usually portrayed as quite the hand-to-hand brawler but we'll soon find out why he's fighting in this manner.

No Caption Provided
Throughout all of Coulson's questions, Thor just sits quietly refusing to answer. Or could it be that he can't answer the questions? Does he know who he is or how he got there? You'll also notice that he has a little scratch on his face. You wouldn't think a big tough Asgardian could get a scrape from humans, even if they were trained by S.H.I.E.L.D. This too is explained later when Odin (Anthony Hopkins) mentions stripping Thor of his powers. While Coulson is questioning Thor, it looks like he's just sitting in a chair without any restraints. After trying to escape, why is he willingly sitting there listening to his questions?

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Now we get a glimpse at the grandeur of Asgard and Odin's throne room. The room is full of Odin's guards and what looks like a lot of witnesses as Thor kneels before his father. Odin mentions the sacrifices he's made to maintain peace but Thor did something to jeopardize all of that. Thor may be kneeling before his father but you see a look of smugness on his face. The next scene cuts to Thor having some fun on a little adventure which is the source of Odin's wrath.

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Thor and his companions have ventured off to the north in the land of the Frost Giants. Whether this trip was sanctioned by Odin is unclear. Based on Odin's anger we get the impression that Thor lead this little mission without his consent and was looking for a fight.

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Some of Thor's war party includes Sif (Jaimie Alexander) and Hogun (Tadanobu Asano). Odin's mentions that due to Thor's stupidity, Asgard has now become open to war. Thor and his comrades have a fierce battle and we get some glimpses at what appear to be small Frost Giants.

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
During Thor's reprimand by his father, we see Heimdall (Idris Elba). Those eyes of his give him a creepy look. I always got the impression that he friends with Thor. The couple times he's shown in the trailer make me wonder what his intentions are. It could be that he is focused on his duty of guarding the Rainbow Bridge to Midgard. There could also be the fact that it's always awkward when a friend and their parents are having an argument in front of you.

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Speaking of arguing, Thor and Odin don't hold back. They may be gods but fathers and sons still have disagreements like humans. I'll admit I was a little shocked to hear Thor call Odin an old man and a fool. I suppose you can only take so much lecturing especially when it's in a throne room full of others. Regardless, Thor really ought to show Odin some respect.

No Caption Provided
Here comes Loki (Tom Hiddleston). He was briefly seen with Thor and the others during their Frost Giant attack in the background. In a typical Loki manner, it looks as if he's trying to gain some favor while Thor is getting his lecture. Could he be trying to speak on behalf of his stepbrother or is he trying to work things in his favor?

No Caption Provided
Did Odin sell tickets for this show? Everyone is here to witness Thor's punishment. As the yelling begins, we see Sif walk up next to Thor's mom, Frigga (Rene Russo).

No Caption Provided
Chastising Thor in front of everyone isn't all Odin will do. He tells Thor that he is unworthy. We see Thor lose his cape and armor while he summons Mjolnir to his hand. Thor is about to be cast out of Asgard. If Odin is determined to take away Thor's power and possessions, it's unclear how and why Mjolnir ends up on Earth. Perhaps Odin sends it after Thor so that he can journey to become worthy of it and of returning to Asgard one day.

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Thor's trip to Midgard isn't a pleasant one. If he took the journey on the Rainbow Bridge, it's not as colorful as it is in the comics. Why he would be sent to the United States isn't clear. After Thor's impact from landing, it almost looks as if there's some sort of pattern on the ground next to him. It's at this point I started wondering again how the actual movie begins. Will it start off in Asgard and lead up to his question and answer session with Agent Coulson?

No Caption Provided
Lucky for Thor, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) is nearby when he has his crash landing. When Thor replies, "Oh no, this is Earth, isn't it?" his accent doesn't sound too...Asgardian. It's also peculiar that he chooses to say Earth over Midgard. It could be that he knows he's on Midgard but no one would know what he was talking about if he used that name.

No Caption Provided
Now it's time to show off Thor's physique. Hemsworth has probably spent a bit of time with a trainer and the studio wants to make sure we're aware of that. This scene will most likely involve Jane being surprised and impressed by what he has to offer. What better way to start up the romance by giving Jane an opportunity to start drooling?

No Caption Provided
The trailer is approaching the end so we start getting random scenes from different points in the movie. Heimdall likes to carry a big sword with him and we see him use it to summon an electrical show. This could be his way of opening the Rainbow Bridge.

No Caption Provided
In an epic pose, we see Thor most likely boasting his accomplishments after attacking the Frost Giants. He's clearing saying look at me! This appears to be right before he bows down and faces Odin's wrath.

No Caption Provided
Loki may be envious of his stepbrother but we see that he gets an accessory of his own. This giant staff will be put to use later when he has a little skirmish with Thor.

No Caption Provided
The trailer continues to jump around as we see the Destroyer on Earth causing havoc. Is it a coincidence that the Destroyer ends up in the same town on Earth as Thor? The Destroyer was created by Odin but was used several times by Loki to try to put an end to Thor. We can assume that Loki has something to do with this attack on Earth.

No Caption Provided
When Thor arrives on Earth, he doesn't have his armor or Mjolnir. This leads you to believe that after he arrives, the Destroyer attacks. Thor can't put a stop to it without his Asgardian powers. He most likely tracks down Mjolnir to where S.H.I.E.L.D. is keeping it, putting Thor up against the agents we see at the beginning of the trailer.

No Caption Provided
Was Thor involved with Sif before he was banished to Earth? Because he was so selfish back on Asgard, having him fall for Jane is important as it will be the motivation he needs to reclaim his abilities and Mjolnir. It's up to Thor to stop the Destroyer and save the planet (where is Iron Man during all of this?).

No Caption Provided
In another random scene towards the end, we see Loki standing up for himself. Prior to this, Loki seemed almost bashful in his scenes. Now he's showing his true colors while fighting Thor and wearing his horny helmet.

Movie Plot Theory

What does this trailer say about the movie's plot? The logical conclusion is the movie will begin on Asgard. We'll see the cocky and brash Thor craving action. He goes out looking for trouble and in doing so, starts up a war with Ymir (Colm Feore) and the Frost Giants. This enrages Odin who strips Thor of his powers and banishes him to Earth. Thor meets up with Jane Foster and begins to fall for her. The Destroyer is sent to Earth by Loki, looking to kill Thor. Thor has no choice but to infiltrate the S.H.I.E.L.D. location where they are attempting to study Mjolnir. Thor will not be worthy of reclaiming the power of Mjolnir but will eventually become worthy and Thor will put a stop to the destruction. Thor will be given the opportunity to return to Asgard but he'll choose to stick around with Jane instead. Somewhere along the line, Iron Man or Nick Fury will approach him about the Avengers Initiative and set things up for Thor to appear in The Avengers.

If you want to see the trailer again, check it out on the video page or watch it below.

Here's some more images to look at to see if you can find any other tidbits of information that I might have missed.

No Caption Provided
After watching the trailer again and looking carefully at the images, have you changed you mind on the movie? What are your impressions of the movie at this stage?

This probably goes without saying, but this is not a film to watch in 3D.  We saw the trailer for this preceding Tron 3D in IMAX and the use of 3D for the Thor trailer was horrendous... for example, they simply deformed the closeups outward in great rounded bulbs to create a 3D-ish effect, but instead of being immersive it was unsettling.  When I first saw this trailer on the PC it looked like it had a clear voice and tone it wanted to convey- whether successfully or not- with a certain level of gravity... but the 3D trailer made it seem cheap, plastic, and schlocky.

I know i have to give some leway on this movie, as i am an avive thor fan, Personaly i hope its good
from the trailer i am doubtful

They chose an aussie so they didnt have to teach somebody to talk like they are in shakespearean play, but i think his accent is jarring

oh no, is this odd (earth) and i know im not the only one who heard this. I shall give it space to breathe like i did FF ( sue storm is hispanic, and has the herpes, no really jessica alba does)

I guess i am just ranting but as a thor fan it is my job to do this, is it not?

The movies so far in the build up to the Avengers seem to coincide with the Ultimates timeline so it's possible they are touching it  a bit. And I'm not terribly up on Thor, but I was almost thinking they were going with Sigurd(sp) Thor and/or when Thor was cursed and had to wear ful body armor. Probably wrong. Could be more clues to the move in Sif's history, though.

Will this be Thor on Asgard, with armor and hammer and Thor action, then sent to Earth where he has no armor and must find and become worthy of hammer, and near the end get back his hammer but maybe not his armor?
So that it will be mostly Thor looking like this though most of the movie:

No Caption Provided

No Caption Provided
Because he did mention how his favorite Thor comic, that he got as reference was from the Ultimates.  Maybe to bridge the gap between Iron Man's reality and Thor's magic they will have Thor look more like Ultimate Thor while on Earth, and look like regular Thor in Asgard.
I hope not completely, but its something that occurred to me.

I am not a Thor fan by any means, nor was I am Iron Man fan.  I was pleasantly surprised by IM1 because I had NO expectations.  I have no expectations w/ this film either.  I'm not letting a trailer get me too excited though, I'll wait for the film to decide.  Either case, this flick looks FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR, FAR better than DC's GL offering at this point IMHO.

I saw an interview with the actor playing Thor, and he mentioned out of all the reference comics he was sent his favorite Thor comic was Ultimate Thor's first appearance.  So maybe it will use some influence of Ultimate Thor, but instead of it being a questions (is he really Thor or not) its just that he looks human and doesn't have all his armor on Earth, and talks more like he is from Earth.

Looks cool.  I'm glad they cast someone powerfully built enough to look like Thor.  To often movie studios/producers cast pencil-necks to portray superheroes and they look pathetically weak.

A lot of these speculations were confirmed with the 8-minute trailer leaked from Comicon. We even get to see Thor fail to lift Mjolnir and collapse with the knowledge of his failure.

I imagine this is why we see Thor speaking with Coulson without any means of restraint. The fight scenes we see with Thor against the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents would be his initial attempt to reach Mjolnir. After failing to lift it, he is so distraught that he stops caring and simply allows himself to be captured.

Also, if you look at Odin in the beginning of the trailer, you'll notice that the "staff" Loki is holding is in fact Gungnir, Odin's legendary spear.

i hate the text graphics honestly i think they didn't do a good job of making the texture more appealing i mean something like harry potter with a bit of a stone like finish would work, but of course it has to look at least a bit realistic, but i don't mind the scenes of the film itself I'm gonna watch this film definitely hopefully it'll be good

Look, the only analysis is a war monger like Odin lecturing Thor about War is kind of like George Bush Sr lecturing George Bush Jr about going into the Middle East. I mean, that part is SILLY.

" My interpretation of the trailer is a bit different: I think Thor came looking for his hammer to regain his powers. He fights his way through the Shield guards, but then finds that he can't lift the Hammer. He's not worthy (yet). In this depressed state of mind he probably let's the agents capture him without resistance. Not having his powers explains the injuries. It's a way to get the origin story without confusing non-comic book readers by adding Donald Blake to the mix. But the whole banishment and de-powering due to his arrogance, and locking the power to his hammer is right out of the comic book. "
Good take! That makes a lot of sense. The first thing he'll do when he finds out about the Mjolnir being on midgard will be to retrieve it, arrogantly bashing his way to it - thinking he's in the right. Then finding out that he's not worthy, he becomes humbled leading to his conversation with Coulson.

that is what I got from the trailer as well, makes the most sense.

I'd like to point out that not everything you see in trailers is always in the movie.  That said, this is hopefully not the case here as the trailer looks very promising.
