Thor Now Has a Sister

Through the events of ORIGINAL SIN, this secret past connection is revealed.

During ORIGINAL SIN, many secrets have been unlocked due to the Watcher’s death. One of those is the fact that Thor has a sister. He’s had one all these years only no one ever knew. What makes this more dramatic, in a comic book fashion, is the sister is an already well-known character, Angela. (There will be some spoilers for ORIGINAL SIN #5.1: THOR & LOKI THE TENTH REALM #1).

Angela made her debut in the pages of Todd McFarlane’s SPAWN and was created by Neil Gaiman. Angela was part of a race of warrior angels who were determined to hunt down the various Spawn’s, or other agents of Hell, over the years. Gaiman owned the rights to the character. He reached an agreement with Marvel to bring Angela into the Marvel universe at the end of AGE OF ULTRON when the time stream had been damaged due to the constant use of time traveling by the various heroes.

Angela being Thor’s sister is only part of the revelation. If you’re caught up on your Thor lore or even if you’ve only familiar with the movies, you know there are nine realms in the Marvel Universe. When the secret of Angela’s connection to Thor was revealed, it also unleashed the fact that there is actually a tenth realm that was hidden from everyone’s memory.

Your immediate reaction might be Odin is a bit of a dog. He must have stepped out and tried hiding his indiscretion by removing this tenth realm from everyone’s perception. That isn’t quite the case.

Thor confronts his mother and demands to know why the existence of his sister was kept from him. In anguish, she tells him he was never told because she saw her die. Asgard was at war with angels. They were determined to destroy Asgard. During the battle, one of the angelic warriors, actually it was the Queen of the Angels, came across Odin and Freyja’s heir—their daughter Aldrif.

Demands were made against Odin—demands to change their way of thinking and simply to surrender. His refusal resulted in the apparent death of his infant daughter. In outrage, Odin unleashed the Odin-Force but it was too late. The Queen of the Angels was gone and took the corpse of their child. In his anger, Odin tore the tenth realm from the others and sealed it away.

Of course that wasn’t really the end of Aldrif. We’ll find out more details in the THOR & LOKI: TENTH REALM miniseries. We’ll find out how she survived and likely how she was raised to become the fierce warrior we’ve seen in the pages of SPAWN and GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. What this means for her character or those in the pages of THOR remain to be seen. You’ll want to read the rest of the series to find out.

The question is, is this a good idea? How will this impact Thor and Angela? You can voice your thoughts in the comments below but you can also make it more official-like and vote in our poll.

I love this. I feel like it's an excellent way to introduce Angela into the Marvel mythos.

So it's not really that they lied or anything, they just didn't tell the whole truth and didn't wanna burden Thor with what happened. Okay, I can accept that.

My opinion, don't like it, don't want her in the Marvel Universe period. Seems completely unnecessary. Ultimately, more power to fans that do like her, I'm just hoping she doesn't show up and ruin Thor: God of Thunder when it starts back in a couple of months.

In the words of Roy from RIPD: "I'm interested- color me interested." I'm a big Thor fan & definitely up on my Thor lore, & Nordic mythology as well as theology, & the idea of Asgard at war with angelic beings is something I've thought about, but has never been explored. It's kind of a reflection of the bloody wars between Christian & pagan ideologies that went on in Europe; the Christian Reckoning. It makes Angela more interesting to me. I will definitely be following this & seeing where it goes.

Indifferent at the moment. Sounds interesting but I'll have to wait and see where it's heading before I can really judge it.

This is actually a great way to do things. It's almost a reversed Loki thing. I like it

Agreed. I like the way it happened.

Awaits for opinionated person that says that I should hate this just because they do

@twix_right_side: I like it because it doesn't just throw out the fact Angela is an angel trained warrior. Takes liberties and even FURTHER deviates from Norse mythology, but that's par for the course for Marvel at this point.

All in all this is the best way they could have brought her into the universe without having all of the Spawn baggage.

True. That is certainly a good way of looking at it.

I was kind of thinking that when Odin sealed the tenth realm off from the others he inadvertently pushed it into the Image universe...thus still allowing for all of her history there to happen as it did...though I really don't know anything about her history at Image so this could already be screwing up her history there

Can't wait to read this.

I'm enjoying here in GotG, but this just sounds dumb.

@danhimself: Essentially she was a Hellspawn killer. I'd say more, but trying to explain ANYTHING about Spawn is a headache. I only read the first couple of arcs before I dropped it because it got so damned confusing!!! People say comics are confusing and hard to get into for new readers........ Trust me Marvel on its off days and DC as it was in the pre-New 52? Yeah they don't hold a CANDLE to the levels of confusion, retcons, semi/sorta reboots, and baffling leaps in logic that Spawn is.

I KINDA wish Marvel had somehow managed to get the rights to Medieval Spawn(Yeah that exists and was created by Niel Gaiman) so we could have a Spawn that at least made sense.

I know a little about them only because my brother collected the action figures but past that I've tried several times to read Spawn but just never found it all that interesting and as crazy as it sounds never really cared for McFarlane's art

@danhimself: I was drawn in by the concept and the first arc or two is really interesting........ But man did it go MAJORLY downhill after that.

so angela is not an angel anymore she is odin and freyjas' daughter aww was kinda hoping odin got it on with an angel like he did with gaea oh well.

Okay, I've didn't get involved with the Original Sin story arch other than the fact that the Watcher got murdered. Now I find out Cap is old and Angela from the Image Universe (or Spawn Universe) is in the Marvel Universe, which sounds kind of awesome, but now she's going to be Thor's sister?! Not sure how I feel about that, does that mean they erase the fact that she's an angel? She still is an angel right? And if she still is an angel doesn't that leave on lot of questions to be asked about true divine power? Would she not report to "The One Above All"? How did she get sent to the Spawn Universe? And in the Spawn or Image Universe wasn't she a human before she became an angel? And if she was originally and always was an angel, how the heck could she be Thor's sister unless Odin or Gaea made it with an angel? A million and one questions that need to be answered. It could be very interesting if done right. Crossing my fingers that it is done right.

Wait, does this make Spawn a Marvel hero now?

"Tenth realm"? Remember a few months ago when I said they could call this "Retcons: the series" and everyone asked me if I meant it in a bad way, and I said "no"? Well, now I do mean it in a bad way.

*finger snap* I just realized who's costume she's ripping off! Red Sonja!

That's what I was gonna say. STUPID.

I rather have Angela be Angel's sister.

If I were Thor I'd have to commit incest with her.

I'm reading this. Kind of reminds me of He-Man & She-Ra.

I know right?! the whole seperated at birth and the sister was raised by the enemy. Thor always seemed like a marvel version of He-man anyways.

Loved the whole twist and how there is actually a 10th realm of angels. I think it brings something new and exciting to the whole lore that surrounds Thor only making it more interesting and giving the writers more to work with. I love this whole idea and really enjoyed the issue.

At least they didnt have Odin get all Zeus-y with a wing-back piece of ass. Very He-Man like.

Still rather they just introduce her as a top tier character, & just use christian mythology, just like how Marvel uses it with Thor or Hercules. Have her join the Avengers. She doesnt need, nor IMO deserve, to be shoe-horned into Thor's side of the Marvel-verse.

I dont have a problem with the christan involment in Norseland , I mean I have a who's who issue that says there is a rainbow bridge between Asgard & Olympus, plus I got no problem with "those" troublesome religions getting bashed.

I dont think this really disregards or confuses anything with her Image backstory. Yet.

Nope. This has nothing to do with the rest of the Spawn universe. It's just Angela, because Neil Gaiman had the rights for the character after he created her in the pages of Spawn. After years of legal confontations with McFarlane, Gaiman finally got the 100% of the character's rights for himself and then decided to bring her to the Marvel Universe. So yeah just her.

Forgive my question, but, if angels are apart of the tenth realm and sealed away how the heck does that affect the ghost rider series sense angels are so active in that one (he also has the spirit of an Angel in him, not to mention heaven, and other things) ? To me this seems to throw the marvel universe... well to be fair that really depends on how they explain this actually, but still..

Posted by G-Man

@avilon: We don't know if they're the angels. It's all a matter of interpretation. Where do these angels come from? If they're a race and born and raised or whatever, that doesn't mean they're the same angels we might think of in terms of the actual Heaven, etc.

@squares: What makes it stupid? I'm too familiar with the character but I find her interesting.

Posted by Sebast_Allen

Like the idea, hope they expand more on Angels, actually give them some significance in Marvel Continuity.

Posted by BatWatch

I miss the days when DC had continuity that they had to find clever ways to adapt to new scenarios...instead of just chunking twenty-five years of stories to make up a brand new continuity that is both less rich and more muddled due to poor planning an intintional vagueness about past events.

I don't think I'm ever going to get over the reboot.

Reeks of a lazy retcon to shoehorn in a new origin story for her. Felt that way when I was reading it. Would've preferred Thor's sister to have been a new character altogether.

Posted by i_dont_like_comics

3 words come to mind: crowbar, lazy and rough.

Posted by ComicBookCoby

so cool that they're bringing this Angela character over. I never read Gaiman's version of her: is the 10th World supposed to be whatever Spawn universe she came from?

also, didn't Thor already have like a bunch of half-sisters and half-brothers?

Retconmania is running wild DUDES.
