Thor, God Of... Science?

Prepare for scientifically-accurate viking gods

Among other hints of the future, Marvel Studios president, Kevin Feige, recently stated that THOR will be less fantastical and more rooted in reality.   The stated reason being that it’ll keep the film more in line more with the tone set by IRON MAN.

No Caption Provided

Striking such a balance has traditionally been a concern for the thunder god, who, aside from Dr. Strange, was the only magically-powered character created during Marvel’s Silver Age.    Me, myself -- I've never had a problem reconciling “science” and “magic” in the Marvel Universe, because it's all fantasy in the end.  I remember STAN LEE’S MUTANTS, MONSTERS & MARVELS, an extended   interview conducted by Kevin Smith,  where Lee admitted he’d used radiation as a cure-all McGuffin since.   By his own admission, he knew little-to-nothing about science, so gamma rays might as well have been rainbow waves.    Although, amusingly, he also stated he wanted to give Thor a more scientifically-plausible method of flight.   Superman just flies with no visible means of propulsion, whileThor flings Mjolnir and goes along for the ride.

I suspect the issue of making pagan characters more palatable to mass audiences might factor into this, although it’s something that’s already been addressed numerous times in the comics.   I don’t know who did it first, but I remember the Ellis/Deodato run from the 90s putting forth the idea that the Aesir are, in fact, shapeless aliens who reinvented themselves according to Norse beliefs.  That notion was taken a step further in the EARTH X trilogy where Loki actually “woke up” from his role as an evil trickster god.  I highly doubt that the movies going to get into much of that - - one thing at a time, of course.

I always think Thor as an advanced alien from up an super Advanced world that allows them to create even a world's with their tech I think that mjiolnir is made up of superconductor that acts as lightning creator and it's made out of programmable matter that only allows it to be taken only for sufficiently mortal members and inner side of mjiolnir is just interlaced with some shock absorber a to protect wielder

This reeks of the big let down years ago on Stargate SG-1, when the "Asgard" turned out to be little gray aliens.

Well, Thor is a god in a still existing religion. And that's the awesome thing about him as a character, that he is a god amongst humans. Removing his divinity would be like removing all boobshots from witchblade.

As an Australian science fiction writer, I've been a Marvel Thor fan since the early 1960's.

I'm avidly awaiting the movie and am quite happy with the way things are progressing.

As long as we are talking about the movie and not changing the existing 616 comic. I would actually like to see the ULTIMATE take on it. Like where you aren't really sure if Thor's a god or just some crazy guy with powers. All the recent Marvel movies seem to be a mix of the classic story and the Ultimate universe and most of them have been pretty good. If they follow the formula they used for Iron Man and the newer Hulk movie I think it will be just fine.

Actually he flies through subconsciously emitting some kinda energy field... apparently it's related to his invulnerability.
BTW, I always thought it was funny how Stan used radiation for everybody's powers in MU, now I now why.

This announcement makes my head hurt. And put it down as a another reason, Marvel movies are going to suck some serious stinky butt in the near future. Thor is a GOD. God of Thunder, hell the Marvel version of Thor (which is what most people think of) is not close to the Thor in mythology.

Marvel goes out and finds a director (Brannagh) that is well versed in dealing with this type of mythology(and Shakespeare is very close to it) and being able to relate it to the modern audience. Now, Marvel is taking a major aspect of a founding character (Thor's Asgardian origins) and instead is going to make him more science based? Puke garbage that is.  This dumb idea ranks right up there with Spidey pulling his mask off and showing everyone who he is in Civil War.

I suppose it should not be a surprise now that Disney has bought Marvel that they are all about trying to keep a furor down over Thor's pagan origins. After all, Disney does not like any controversy and wants to make as much money as possible over everything.  People were wondering when they first Disney signs would show on Marvel, and I think we have a first one here.

This sounds cool. But, I do agree with the whole "not making him scientific" thing. I mean, Thor needs to have fantastical stuff, because he's one of the only magical superheroes in Marvel!!!!!

Who lets these people think? Who has a dunce cap for this man? Anyone? It's called THOR, he is the GOD OF FREAKIN' THUNDER! He isn't the god of radioshack lightning rod assembly kits and anti gravity boots.

Sounds like they plan on toning down any possible "pagan" elements to simply broaden the American appeal.

He's a fictional god from a religion hardly anyone follows anymore. Whoever can read that sentence and say 'wow, I think he'd be improved by science!' deserves death and worse irl.

Quote from the article:

"And in the Thor of the Marvel Universe, there's a race called the Asgardians. And we're linked through this Tree of Life that we're unaware of.

"It's real science, but we don't know about it yet. The Thor movie is about teaching people that."

This guy is evidently among the stupidest people on the planet. DC just became my fav. publishing company.

Glad to see everyone is in opposition of this ridiculous idea. Thor is about Norse mythology, not science-fiction. I was looking forward to this movie, now I'm not so sure.

Why do i get the feeling that Marvel is suddenly trying not to piss off the x-tian right-wingers and draw in a larger audience? Thor is a God based in a mythology far predating christianity. Asatru is still a recognized religion in several parts of the world. I think anyone interested in going to see a Thor movie in the first place is probably already familiar with the Marvel comics portrayal and are gonna be a little hozed that Marvel is jumping away from what makes this character and his interaction with the other Avengers so engaging.

If this tuns out to be crap i swear i'll download the movie and seed it for eternity (that's right, i said it).

The whole damn reason why where making thor is because we should give science fiction a break in which we seen already in a lot of superhero films now we want mythical elements from other characters  and not freaking turn mythology into science what are guys thinking!?

This is just stupid. It should be magic based it gives it that viking touch. The film should be like Lord of the Rings or Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King.

What if we think a little more creatively about this sciene vs magic debate?  What if Asgard and the enchanted weapons, etc just look kind of techie but the Gods still use magic.  And what if the people of Earth are just absolutely convinced that the gods are just scientific aliens, that would cast some doubts in the viewers minds as well.  This kind of dramatic tension that would openly question the whole magic thing could be done with a wink to the audience so that we know in the end that the Gods are authentically magical.

this made me groan. part of the avengers schtick is that they come from very different backgrounds: exposed to radiation, mutant, super serum, power armor, extreme human talent and yes, a god or two. if you're going to muck around with what makes a character who they are, just go ahead and change the names and leave the real Thor to someone else.

I'm not a fan of Thor, (or anything Marvel really,) but making him more of a science character is just... Wrong. But you know, I'll let it slide ONLY if they make Iron Man a magic suit of armor that Merlin made that gained sentience, and if they change the Hulks back-story so that he's really just a guy possessed by some pissed off demon.

The fact that Iron Man is science based and Thor is magic is what would make a movie with both of them interesting!

i can see why they'd do this. So much magic in a superhero setting has never been done before. Although Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter were successful, however, they were not superhero movies. The closest magic superhero has been Phantom, which was not that big of a hit. To introduce the first big fantasy/magic superhero ever, they need to ease the audience into it from the traditional sci-fi elements of previous superheroes.

Much like Blade, which took supernatural beings and had scientific reasoning behind them, Thor also would not be hurt by a little bit of explanation to relate Asgard to our own reality. I am sure that they will also do it tastefully and accurately. I have full confidence in Thor's cast and crew.

P.S. The archaic speech should be superb sense both Kenneth Branagh , Anthony Hopkins, and several other people involved have done excellent Shakespeare films like Titus Andronicus, Much Ado About Nothing, Henry V, and others.

I agree.  Its supposed to be fiction not reality.  There doesn't have to be an expination as to why just make it fun.  Otherwise the Vadican is gonna pissed off and we're gonna have to read about that as well.  We don't need protests against Thor by what ever Christian fanatics that are gonna say Thor is screwing up the children.

Sounds like a load of crap to me.

How many Harry Potter/ Lord of the Rings/ etc  movies have mass audiences been exposed to? Why does Marvel Studios all of a sudden think audiences can't handle fantasy?  Just because Iron Man was successful shouldn't mean the tone of future  Marvel movies should follow suit.

I'd like Thor to be more, scientific than magical. There's nothing better than a film that we can relate to and say  "Wow, that could actually happen".  (:
