Thomas Jane Reprises Role as The Punisher (Sort Of)

A new fan film by Jane himself returns us to Punisher circa 2004 and it’s awesome.

I really enjoyed Thomas Jane’s take on the Punisher back in the 2004 flick. Sure, John Travolta as the main bad guy felt a bit hammy, and the murder of Frank Castle’s entire family was a little much, but outside that, the 2004 Punisher was a fun movie with a solid cast. But I know I’m in the minority. So it wasn’t much of a surprise when Lionsgate and Marvel decided to go in a different direction and recast Frank Castle with Ray Stevenson for 2008’s Punisher: War Zone.

But I wasn’t done with Thomas Jane’s version of the Punisher. And neither was Thomas Jane.

Flash forward to 2012 and Thomas Jane has wrangled up a few friends (including Ron Perlman) to create a fan fiction short film called “Dirty Laundry” with Jane reprising the role of Frank Castle. The 10-minute short is pretty damn dark (befitting the Punisher world) and is definitely NSFW. What it does manage to do, though, is show Jane’s dedication to delivering a version of the Punisher for the screen that feels more in line with his comic book counterpart. Like, I can totally believe Frank Castle could turn a Whiskey bottle into one of the deadliest weapons on earth.

Give the video below a watch and let us know what you think of Thomas Jane’s latest take on the Punisher. With enough fan support maybe we can see yet another reboot of the Punisher movie franchise with Thomas Jane back in the starring role...

Are there any more of these because that was cool. I'll be satisfied with a bunch of these shorts than a whole movie.

I think Ray Stevenson had a better face for the punisher, he just had that mean look, but Thomas Jane played it better and his version was more entertaining.

Now I want to see a kind of Thomas Jane Punisher spin-off where he plays the guy from “The Mist” and goes out dealing deadly revenge for the death of his son against cruel irony.

Am I the only one that doesn't like the music choice? Don't get me wrong it fits really well but I just guess I'm so big a batman fan that the idea of Batman just showing up and taking away that lighter just won't leave my head. But still...OMG! The 04 movie was my fav take on the character as far as film goes and I want to see another Jane movie. IMO set it in the same universe where the exact amount of time has passed since the last movie.

Pretty cool, brutal stuff!!

I liked certain bits of both of the latest Punisher movies, but I wish they could tackle the story like Nolan did the recent Batman flicks. I think the Punisher would translate awesomely in a Dark Knight-esque type of story/movie, which was just as much of a cool crime drama as it was a realistic comic book movie. It would have to me more violent of course, with the Punisher icing bad guys the way he does...

@Iron Apollo: Maybe his kids are now old enough for him to not have to be so careful? Or maybe he changed his mind. He's allowed to change his mind about the type of roles he takes. That wouldn't make him a hypocrite.

Disclaimer: I'm not an expert in his roles. But if several years ago he decided not to take certain roles and later changed his mind, that's not hypocrisy. It would be if he was claiming to not take those roles while still portraying them. Is he still making this claim?

If you take another look at that comment I'm not the one who made it. I just "quoted" it and made a response like I am here.
And my response to that quote was like yours things change.

KICKIN ASS!! AWESOME! Thomas Janes take on the Punisher is wicked, too bad the movie he did fell through. After this little flick, I say give Tom the lead in that Punisher series they say their making. I know it wont be quite as brutal being a TV show (unless its HBO maybe?) but Tom should still be the Punisher, I mean he's allready on TV anyway right?

I think the implication was he had been struggling to disentangle himself from it. Drawing a correlation to him saying he was 5 years sober - meaning he was not an alcoholic, but rather a different kind of 'addict' if you will. Him taking the bottle of JD was synonymous to Frank jumping off the wagon - in more ways than one.

I prefer Ray Stevenson. He just came across as a more believable Punisher. He was a lot angrier and a lot more brutal than Thomas Jane was. BUT I do think that given the right material, Thomas Jane would make an awesome Punisher.

Personally I want a Punisher that could easily snap in with the rest of the Cinematic universe. Not a full-blown role in The Avengers 2 or The Amazing Spider-Man 2, but possibly a cameo. Make a hint at the Punisher in the Cinematic Universe before making a full feature film. Then it would be easier to put in easter eggs to other C.U. films; I.E. Castle buying Stark Industries guns off the Black Market, Newspaper clippings & online articles about Spider-Man, sightings of the Hulk, Iron Man or Spider-Man in the Manhattan skyline etc, etc.

It would be so damned easy, but yet Marvel probably won't be able to do it since they merged with Disney.

Come to think of it, they could probably prepare for a Dr. Strange film now that the magical aspect of the Avengers-verse has been opened......Hmmm..

Holy hell, I just read last night how close Jane and Tim Bradstreet are, and that one of Tim's dream projects is to get funding together and do Punisher right. I had no idea it was this close to happening, if there is enough interest in this It could be on the horizon.

that 10:15 was better than all three Punishers. Ray has a better look and I actually liked War Zone better. But if they gave Jane and Perlman the chance to write and direct it that would be sweet. I think Marvel really needs to take some notes from DC on the dark and gritty bit. No stupid jokes (like avengers) just a pissed off man on a mission holding nothing back. I've always thought Punisher would be the hardest to write.

Wow! I'm surprised this got such a great reaction. I don't normally read a lot of Punisher but is he normally as lazy as he is in this movie? I mean I understand minding your own business but he waited around wayyyyyy too long to do something. Or does Punisher just honestly just not give a s*** about victims?

OH... HELL... YES!!! Thomas Jane's take on the Punisher has been my favorite. The older one with Dolph wasn't bad for it's time though. I hope the people at Marvel see this and think "Oooppss.. We REALLY screwed up." War Zone was a complete joke of a movie.

This was pretty cool, and I wouldn't mind another Punisher film but this most likely will play into the rumor of the Punisher TV series. I liked both the 04' Punisher and War Zone, both had cool and uncool moments and I may be the minority on this but Stevenson was a more believable Castle with him standing 6'4" while Jane is only 5'11".

Speaking of minority, what was the deal with him not helping that woman and taking so long to help that kid? Call me racist but I'm sure he would've reacted quicker or even immediately if they were white. "I'm gonna go start my laundry while she gets raped and beaten and I'm gonna go grab a YooHoo while the kid gets robbed and beaten, but don't worry I'll give her a chance to get some payback which might land her in jail and the kid gets a shirt with a bullet hole in it."

Maybe movies ruined it for me, but no bottle could've taken that much abuse without breaking.

The music from The Dark Knight drove me completely crazy. Otherwise this was quite good. It was weird to me how long it took for him to lay down the punishment though. You'd think he'd step in earlier.

I like the '04 Punisher, but I just felt that it lacked something as far as direction went. Even the director's cut still seemed choppy to me for some reason. I also don't think they took advantage of the R rating (for comparison, look at how great Blade 1 is). But I would like to see Jane get a 2nd chance at it. One other small gripe I have is... Florida? They took Pun out of the grey and mean streets of NYC and stuck him in TAMPA of all places? Maybe to non-Floridians it is not a bad change, but for me, born and raised and living in Florida... let me tell you how incredibly silly and laughable that idea is. Even Miami could have been passable... but Tampa? Uhhhhh...

War Zone... bleh. I turned off War Zone when a little kid SNUCK UP on the Punisher. Really? A little kid? Come on. And the whole 'I feel so guilt here have some money'... GTFO. That was no Punisher flick. The Dolph Lundgren junk was even better than that.

Any Punisher movie don't need any complicated plot it is just pure and simple kick ass action, like the Expendables. They have an extensive rogue gallery in the Punisher Max (Barracuda, General Zakharov, Nicky Cavella, etc.., and other few characters from the 616 that they can use.

I liked the '04 film. Especially the Director's Cut. Frank making a guy commit suicide was appropriately disturbing, and the thread added to the DC plugged a plot hole. I think if you watch the finale of the film, too, they really showed off the killing machine that Frank is with how he A) used his knife and B) shot a guy in such a disinterested way without even looking at him, that it was darkly funny.

I tried giving War Zone a shot. I seriously, tried to. But...man...that thing was a mess.

If they give Jane the reigns again, which I would like to see, it wouldn't really need to be a reboot. I mean, '04 would just be the origin flick, and we wouldn't need to retread on it. Just start that the way this short film did. Frank's already down the rabbit hole.

Perlman as a Vietnam Vet was awesome, and great job by that bottle of Jack as Jane's co-star.

Calling War Zone crap was an insult to crap. It was actually so bad that it looped the scale and became good again if you look at it as a parody film. I laughed my ass off through scenes which were supposed to be serious.

I would love for them to find a way to incorporate this into the current Marvel Movies. I know the character is crazy violent and I dont feel like he's much of a threat to a well trained hero, but its still FREAKING AWESOME. I like Thomas's portrayal of the Punisher more then the other one we saw.
