This Week's Essential Comics: 11/7/2012

Rotworld continues, Valiant revives another old series from the shadows and Marvel NOW! kicks off two new books.

Each week we gather up a few titles that we strongly feel will satiate your comic book reading appetite. We recently switched the format from our "10 Comics to Buy This Week."

Now, we’re not trying to tell anyone how to spend their hard-earned money, but our goal for this updated weekly column is for it to be something people can look to for near 100% accuracy when pointing out quality titles. Because as we all know, the problem isn’t finding comics to read, it’s reading the ones that make the most of your limited budget.

Firstly, you’ll notice our typical ten titles have been cut down to five (or there about). But we’re sticking with the old adage: quality over quantity. Lastly, outside further expansion on why we recommend each book, we’re also going to provide preview pages for each title (when available) to give you an idea how the book reads and looks. You can click each image to enlarge.

Daredevil: End of Days #2

No Caption Provided

The first issue of DAREDEVIL: END OF DAYS by Brian Michael Bendis, David Mack, Klaus Janson and Bill Sienkiewicz was emotionally brutal. It also had one hell of a cliffhanger teases Daredevil still being alive. You’d be nuts to think we weren’t excited to see where this all goes.

While we love Mark Waid’s take on The Man Without Fear, we can’t help but be excited to see this creative team – many of whom defined the modern interpretation of Daredevil – working on the character once again. This really does feel like a swan song for Ol’ Hornhead, and we’re going to see this one through to the bitter end. We suggest you grab some popcorn and join us.

Deadpool #1

No Caption Provided

The first of two new Marvel NOW! titles dropping this week, DEADPOOL sees a completely fresh creative team taking a whack at the Merc with a Mouth. Comedians Brian Posehn and Gerry Duggan are joined by artist Tony Moore to pit Deadpool against a bunch of undead presidents.

We were originally going to feature UNCANNY X-FORCE #33 on this week’s list, but we figured we would show some love for DEADPOOL instead. Honestly, I’ve never been a huge Deadpool fan, but Posehn and Duggan’s take on the character might offer up that light-hearted fun that I have really been digging in my superhero comics as of late (see also: DAREDEVIL and HAWKEYE). And with Tony Moore on art, you know this book is going to look gorgeous. I mean, just look at those preview pages!

Iron Man #1

No Caption Provided

Now that Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca’s extended run on INVINCIBLE IRON MAN is over, it’s now time for Kieron Gillen and Greg Land to take over Tony Stark’s adventures.

This is a new beginning for Iron Man, as the techno virus Extremis is out in the wild and up for grabs from the highest bidder. The Iron Avenger must create a new suit of armor and battle this new, unexpected threat.

While the jury is still out on Greg Land handling art duties on Iron Man, at least we know Kieron Gillen rocks. His work on JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY was magnificent, so hopefully he can channel that same energy for Tony Stark.

Manhattan Projects #7

No Caption Provided

This month’s installment is called “Above and Beyond,” featuring a top-secret meeting in Iceland that pits the Americans and Russians against the “Science Tyrants” of the Manhattan Projects.

If you like your fair share of mad science, zany characters and ridiculous plots, Jonathan Hickman and Nick Pitarra’s MANHATTAN PROJECTS in a title you shouldn’t be missing. It’s equal parts hilarious and horrifying. Good stuff.

Preview courtesy of CBR.

Shadowman #1

No Caption Provided

Valiant continues to revive their classic characters this week with the release of the first issue of SHADOWMAN, by Justin Jordan and artist Patrick Zircher.

When a mysterious dark force seeks to claim New Orleans, Jack Boniface must embrace his destiny as Shadowman to ward off the evil that threatens his home. But is being the Shadowman a blessing or a curse?

With the talent attached to this book, we can’t see SHADOWMAN not living up to expectations (We even gave the first issue a solid review). And considering Valiant has been knocking all of their new series out of the park, it seems likely that SHADOWMAN will also be quite awesome. We suggest you jump onboard for something great in the making.

Swamp Thing #14

No Caption Provided

What’s this? Back to back issues of SWAMP THING? Yes please. Scott Snyder and Yanick Paquette are once again back together to continue their share of the Rotworld storyline, this time sending Swampy down the river towards Gotham.

At this point in time, is there anything left to say about how awesome SWAMP THING is? Snyder and Paquette have been creating one of the best books on stands, and getting two issues in two weeks is quite the treat.

This preview comes courtesy of IGN.

The Manhattan Projects is crazy; you just have to take it at face value. Not to mention that book has the BEST covers.

Danger Club Vol. 1

Collects issues #1-4 from one Image Comics' newest titles. It's been a bit delayed, but the reasons behind it are most legitimate and hopefully things are back on track for the creative team of writer Landry Q Walker and artist Eric Jones.

I hope it's okay that I use this forum to throw this out to everyone. Any of you that have not heard of this title, dig around the internet and find out about it. It's a beautiful book and this is a great--and affordable--opportunity to jump on board. The fun is just starting I'm sure.

Shadowman 1 -i SAID I WOULD TRY one VALIANT title and i said i'd go with Shadowman. So im going to give that a try

Green lantern 14- Baz vs the justice league, and more development on Hal and Sinestros situation.Curious to see where this will go.

Hawkeye 4 - I wasn't a fan of Hawkeye, but i love this series! This is a comic done right!

Uncanny X-force 33- the end is near for this awesome arc as well as an awesome series. every issue leading up to the finale should be on everyones essential comics list.

Scarlet Spider - Minnimum carnage arc has been pretty fun so far, the only complaint is the lack of focus on carnage. but he's starting to come up more, next issue he attacks!

Damn, any cover that has someone groping their own eyeballs gives me chills.

@jwalser3:

It probably did, but I wasn't impressed by the first issue of the series, so I didn't follow it directly. I have picked it up though for the Rotworld crossover.

I love Greg Land. I don't know why people bitch about his art. That just baffles me . I never read Gillen before. I hear good things. I'm most excited for DD end of days. Bendis just doesn't do anything bad regarding DD. Just like he doesn't do anything bad regarding Ult. S.M.

Yes, it's a disturbing cover. I love horror and everything but this is something else.

Still can't wait to check it out though. "Colder" seems to be a promising short story... that gets under your skin. :)

Action Comics #14. Come on, it's got Neil degrasse Tyson in it and the real life star system of Krypton being revealed. That's just awesome.

Also, Earth 2 and Swamp Thing. :]
