This Week's Essential Comics: 03/06/13

Not sure what to purchase this week? We have a few suggestions!

Wednesday... the day we comic fans celebrate, yet it's also the day our wallets cower in fear. Our hobby is most certainly an expensive one and deciding how to spend our budget certainly isn't easy. Well, Comic Vine has your back. We think these issues will be worth checking out this Wednesday. Whether it's the start of something new or a new chapter in a great book, we'll happily spend our cash on these and hope you will, too.

AGE OF ULTRON #1

Brian Michael Bendis is once again going to give Marvel's heroes one helluva bad day. Everyone has feared the day Ultron would return... and that day has finally come. This ten part event will be illustrated by Bryan Hitch and definitely looks like it's worth giving an honest shot.

Feast your eyes on a preview of Marvel's next big event.

ALL-NEW X-MEN #8

I think it's safe to say all of us here at Comic Vine have been pleasantly surprised with this one. Bendis has taken a simple time travel premise -- which could have been a total mess -- and turned it into a shockingly fun and focused tale. This issue, we'll see past and present Angel team-up. That's going to be quite an awkward conversation after the events from UNCANNY X-FORCE...

Enjoy a preview of Wednesday's issue below.

GREEN ARROW #18

With just one issue, Jeff Lemire and Andrea Sorrentino have me sold on this series. The book's beautiful and kicked off an exciting new story for the Emerald Archer. This week's issue will dive into his father's secrets as well (hello there, TV crowd).

Head over to DC's website for the rest of the preview.

GREEN LANTERN #18

The next installment of Geoff Johns' final Green Lantern story! While the First Lantern continues to carry out his mission, this is a must read story for two bigger reasons: Hal Jordan and Sinestro. It looks like the spotlight will once again be placed on these two classic characters and that's something I refuse to miss.

Visit CBR for the other preview pages.

SHADOWMAN #5

This kicks off a new story for the dark part of the Valiant Universe. Jack survived his first encounter with Master Darque, but now it's time to learn all about his abilities and the legacy of the Shadowman. Written by Patrick Zircher (who also provides pencils) and Justin Jordan, this is one of Valiant's numerous stellar books.

Check out this extensive preview below.

Worlds Finest the only comic must for me:-)

I need some help: I have a space to start a subscription but dont k now which to get. Green Arrow or FF. It looks as if FF has some interesting art and light stories especially if it is twice a month. On the other hand I am a pure DC guy and have heard good things about the artist and writer of Arrow. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Age of Ultron, Superior Spidey, All New Xmen, DD end of Days, Avengers, Age of Apocalypse, A+X, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, Detective Comics, Green Lantern, Earth 2, Bedlam, Shadow man and Hellboy. Damn big week.

Posted by JLDoom

This week I'm getting:

  • Superman
  • Green Lantern
  • Age of Ultron
  • Superior Spider-man
  • Avengers
Posted by noj

@lifeboy: I would say Green Arrow for sure. FF is good but it's also already 4 issues in and closely tied in with Fantastic Four. With Green Arrow you only have to pick up issue 17 which was amazing by the way. FF also has a VERY large cast of fairly obscure characters that you can only really fully appreciate if you've read Hickman's Fantastic Four/FF run. When I tried reading it without having read Hickman's run I had no idea who 75% of the characters were.

I'm really enjoying the Age of Apocalypse. Am I the only one hoping the humans get annihilated? None of them are really growing on me.

Posted by jwalser3

AoU!, animal man, swampthing.

Posted by neiliusprime

@Ramier: Nope, I am thinking about dropping it as well. I actually like the story but the double shipping really annoys me.

Posted by neiliusprime
  • Green Lantern
  • Avengers
  • All-New X-Men
  • Age of Ultron
  • Green Arrow
  • Transformers Spotlight: Bumblebee
  • Cable & X-Force
  • Superior Spider-Man
Posted by lifeboy

@noj: thanks noj. Thats very sage advice. I think I will start the GA subscription and just pick up one issue of FF. One FF should be enough to admire the art.

Posted by Mini_Bat
  • AGE OF ULTRON #1 (Giving it a chance cause it looks good, pulse I want to know wth is it "Not a hoax, not an alternate reality, not a dream!" what is it than?)
  • A PLUS X #5
  • ALL NEW X-MEN #8
  • FAIRY QUEST #2
  • SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #5(and #4 store sold out last week)
  • WORLD’S FINEST #10 (maybe)
Posted by AllStarSuperman

earth 2 #10

Superman

Smallville

Posted by Kal'smahboi

Ha. Superman's not mentioned. I'm not even excited to see how H'El on Earth will end, I just want it to end.

Posted by DonFelipe
  • 47 Ronin #3 (Dark Horse)
  • A+X #5 ... hopefully it'll be as brilliant as #4
  • Animal Man #18
  • Age of Ultron #1
  • Bedlam #5 (Image)
  • Mara #3 (Image)
  • Snapshot #2 (Image)
  • SHADOWMAN #5 (Valiant)
  • Swamp Thing #18

and most importantly...

  • COLDER #5 (of 5) --- I'll be so sad when this story comes to an end. So far, this has been one of the best and most exciting horror mini-stories ever. Plus, the cover artwork is great (though the cover below would have been better without Reece; the woman on the right) and the interior art is simply mind-blowing.

He's quitting the title after the First Lantern Story arc?

I forgot this was the first week of Age Of Ultron. I'm in!

Posted by Grey56

Wow, slow news week. In other thoughts though - I believe Tartar Sauce sums up how I feel about Marvel's new 'OMGPEWPEWULTRONZCOMINTAGETYOUZ' event...

Once again none of my comics made it on the list:

And OMG, for the preview of GL. The art of those two pages are simply majestic

Injustice: Gods among us

Detective Comics

Before Watchmen

Green Lantern

Superman

Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus

Of these, Green Lantern 18 for sure, and many others. Oh may March bear plentiful comic fruit!

Posted by JakeN7

Wow. I think this is the first time that all the comics featured here are already on my pull list for this week.

DC

  • Detective Comics #18
  • Green Arrow #18
  • Green Lantern #18

Marvel

  • Age of Ultron #1
  • All New X-Men #8
  • Avengers #7
  • Superior Spider-Man #5

Valiant

  • Shadowman #5

Maybes

  • World's Finest #10 (I know it's a crap comic, but I got it when Damian was in it and I didn't hate it. It would only be fitting to get the one that deals with his death.)

I can always count on you to put the Valiant titles in the spotlight. I appreciate it, and they definitely deserve it. Given their consistent quality, I hope they become as popular as some of the 'Big 2' books someday.

@BlueLantern1995: Yes. All the creative teams on all of the Green Lantern books are leaving after issue #20. The new creative teams have already been announced.

It's a strong DC week for me. Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Earth 2, and Green Lantern. Superior Spider-Man is probably all I'm gonna read from Marvel. I still need to catch up with All New X-Men. Age of Ultron could be cool but I think I'm more interested in the tie ins than the actual book.

Posted by SavageDragon

Savage Dragon #185, Mara #3, Earth 2 #10.

Posted by Johnnyjavavee

@JakeN7: go head and tell me what they are then. I don't feel like googling it.

Posted by longbowhunter

Count me in for Green Arrow. Also looking forward to Snyder and Paquette's last Swamp Thing story.

Posted by velvetmeds

I'm going to get All New X-men 8 and Detective Comics 18

Posted by feargalr

Ughhhh I haven't even read last weeks comics yet! How am I supposed to catch up!!
