This Week's Essential Comics: 02/20/13

Not sure what comics to buy this Wednedsay? We have a few suggestions!

Another Wednesday, another massive pile of comics to choose from. There's an impressive amount of new issues coming out this week and we understand not everyone has Bruce Wayne's bank account. We're here to help you narrow down the choices. We love these titles and believe you might as well if you give 'em an honest chance. Because there's so many new comics this week, we also have quite a hefty list of honorable mentions for ya.

In case you missed it, here's the full list of this week's new issues.

GREEN LANTERN #17

Geoff Johns may be departing the series down the road, but in the meantime, he aims to please us with 'Wrath of the First Lantern.' Kicking off with this issue (as well as over in NEW GUARDIANS and CORPS), this tale will reveal the threat that forced the Guardians to join forces. Also, the solicit says Baz will go head-to-head with Black Hand and, most important of all, we'll see what happens with Hal Jordan and Sinestro.

There's no preview for this issue, but enjoy the first four pages of NEW GUARDIANS.

Also, parts 2 and 3 are also out this week in GREEN LANTERN CORPS and GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #1

This is one helluva week for Geoff Johns. Not only is he kicking off a brand new GL story, but he's also preparing us for 'Trinity War' with this new series, JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA. How can you honestly resist a book that claims it'll show why Martian Manhunter is "the most dangerous of them all?" To top it off, David Finch is illustrating.

Many have been asking, what the heck is up with this roster. Hopefully we'll get some answers in the first issue.

Sorry, duders, there's no preview for this one.

NOVA #1

Nova's back! Sort of.

Written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Ed McGuinness, this series will dive into the story behind an all-new Nova. Following Sam Alexander, this small town kid will get the chance to shoot for the stars and potentially become one of the most powerful heroes from Earth.

Feast your eyes on the preview below.

THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #5

Jason Aaron has blown me away with this one. This fifth issue will see the finale of the opening story arc. Translation: expect more awesomeness involving the God Butcher and some absolutely stunning art by Esad Ribic.

Visit CBR for the rest of the preview.

X-O MANOWAR #10

I've said it before and I'll say it again: X-O MANOWAR is easily one of the best books out there. Written by Robert Venditti and illustrated by Trevor Hairsine, this latest issue continues the violent and epic path towards 'Planet Death.' This is a must read if you like sci-fi or things that are simply amazing... and you do like amazing things, don't you?

Check out the lengthy preview.

@Cyborg6971:It's probably a combo pack

Posted by Mezmero

Looks like my reads this week will be GL, JLA, Saga, Superior, Wonder Woman, and Deadpool. I'm interested in the response to JLAs Vibe but I honestly couldn't care less about reading it. Maybe I'll borrow it from a friend if they end up getting a copy.

I noticed on DC's site that the justice league of america #4 is listed as $4.99 instead of 3.99 like the rest. Is there going to be a price jack coming in the coming months?

Thats digital combo price

Was thinking of starting X-O Manowar and Shadow Man. Then I checked my wallet.

Ewwww. Who drew Kyle on that splash page?! His nose looks terrible from baby until he gets the GL mask. It's like political cartoon/racist propaganda levels of huge! It's like they're implying he had work done.

QFT. But damn that Green Lantern #17 cover is a fine looking one!

Posted by CaptainMarvell

For the people angry about Nova, as a Mar-vell fan, I totally feel your pain. Nova isn't a mantle? Neither is Captain Marvel! Mar-vell is the man's freaking name and they just passed it over to someone who was already established and essentially blocked Mar-vell from ever coming back. At least with Nova, its Nova corps, so Rich Rider could back as another Nova, there's plenty of them. I read someone say its unfair that Rich stays dead while Starlord and Thanos come back from the dead. Ummm yeah, how do you think I feel? Every freaking character in the Marvel universe has died and comeback. Starlord and Thanos had a universe collapse in on them and they're back! But Mar-vell, he had cancer... yeah, no way to come back from that. *rolls eyes* Its especially ridiculous considering people in real life beat cancer everyday now. Hopefully someday, Rich Rider and Mar-vell will come back and reclaim what rightfully belongs to them and these legacy characters can get their own name (or go back to their own name).

For this week... Action Comics #17, Green Lantern #17, Justice League of America #1, Justice League #17, and Indestructible Hulk #4 for sure.

Posted by greenlucario

@Trevel8182: Thanks for sharing this, it's great to see that amount of love for Rich.

@HushoftheWind: that makes two of us, I'd totally support this.

Nightwing, RHATO, Justice League, judge Dredd, and TMNT

@Brownghost: I'm going to wait to see who is taking over Green Lantern. If the story sounds cool I'm going to keep it. I'm dropping GL: New Guardians and Green Lantern Corps after Wrath of the First Lantern though. I don't normally like to get multiple titles from one family group. I like variety and the only reason I'm getting these is because of the crossover.

@Trevel8182:Is there any indication that he's still alive

Posted by Grey56

@DJ1107: I'm also going to pick the book up - but in support of Ryder for hopes that he will return. You can have an opinion you know and not immediately start out with trying to offend nearly everyone on a thread. I myself am not stranger to telling people their opinion is wrong - but rarely do I stoop to name calling like you have. But then your profile would indicate that you don't want to identify yourself or other things which you might stand for. Perhaps you're just seeking to get a rise out of someone. Curious.

I hate you! (No, I don't)

I'm probably picking up around 20 books. So that'll be around $45-$50 with my discount

@CaptainMarvell:

Ok seriously Mar-vell's been dead for 20-30 years now nobody is going to bring him back unless he's a cthulu entity from an alternate dimension or some re-animated corpse. What is the problem with Marvel doing legacy heroes when DC does it all the time? What makes Carol Danvers unworthy to have the name Captain Marvel, & Simon Baz worthy of the mantle of Green Lantern? Why is it so sacraligeous for Sam to be the new Nova, But we're a-ok with Jamie Reyes as Blue Beetle?

@DJ1107: Your response to is intriguing. However, I might point out that it's fallible to laterally apply logic from one instance to the next when each instance is unique. Of course we have common law and local precedent - however these are creative properties we are discussing and not right/property claims or criminal procedure. The other characters you cited as having unique death settings are just that - individually unique. I would inquire - have you even read the Thanos Imperative ? And if not - have you read all the stories from the characters you cited, to include their death issues? Obviously I am not insinuating that one would have to read ALL of their back issues - I am just inquiring if you have read any.

In your personal response you indicated that you were 'calling it as you see it'. However, as indicated from a pulled article from CBR - there is a great deal of personal investment upon others behalf for Ryder. I would go so far as to say that in fact - they are calling it....as they see it. What makes them so much more of a 'whiner' than yourself for preempting their umbrage with snide remarks? Curious.

Justice League of America, Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Green Lantern: New Guardians, Nightwing, Superior Spider-Man, Deadpool, and Nova for me. ££££££

Edited by G_Money_Christmas

Why isn't Supergirl in the honorable mentions? It's the second to last installment of the H'El on Earth arc and Supergirl has been pretty good these last few issues. And Daredevil isn't even in the honorable mentions? This is an atrocity. Someone made a sh*t list. After the huge blow at the end of the last issue? Daredevil is most definitely at least an honorable mention.
