This Week's Essential Comics: 01/09/13

Not sure what comics are worth your cash this week? We're here to help!

Every Wednesday, an intimidating list of new comics hits the shelves. The vast majority of us are working with a budget -- a fairly limited one, too. This means narrowing down that gargantuan list of titles can be a hefty chore. Well, luckily for you, Comic Vine has your back. We've taken a look at this Wednesday's new releases and managed to select 6 titles that we believe are well worth your money.

Are you buying the following issues or do you have other issues in your sights?

ACTION COMICS #16

"The second death of Superman?" Things are looking bleak for Kal-El as legendary writer Grant Morrison introduces a new villain: Superdoom. According to the solicit, this powerhouse is the "worst foe" the multiverse has seen and it's a demon version of Superman from an alternate universe. Issue #16 will also dive into the Little Man's plan and include a backup story focusing on Superman's battle with the Anti-Superman army.

Stop by MTV Geek for a preview!

CLONE #3

According to staff writer Mat 'Inferior Ego' Elfring's last review, this is a book you absolutely shouldn't miss. Issue 3 of Image's series will follow Dr. Luke Taylor as he goes deeper into the Government's top secret project. Will it reveal more on his origin... or will he be another victim?

Be sure to visit CBR for the rest of the preview.

STAR WARS #1

The force looks strong with this one (sorry, had to). Dark Horse is bringing the classic trilogy (and characters!) back with all new stories by writer Brian Wood and artist Carlos D'Anda. With cover art by Alex Ross, how could you possibly resist picking this one up? It needs to be Wednesday right now so I can have this in my hands.

Check out Dark Horse's preview below.

SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN #1

Odds are you fall into any of these 3 categories when it comes to SUPERIOR: super excited, curious to see how it'll unfold, or you think Dan Slott has crushed your childhood like an ant under a boot. If the latter, take a deep breath because we all know Peter Parker will be back one day.

As for me? I'm fairly pumped to check out this issue and see what Slott has in store for us. At the very least, artist Ryan Stegman is sure to make this book look great, and according to the following preview, it certainly does.

You can also check out our "Everything You Need to Know Before Reading SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN" video HERE.

SWAMP THING #16

The epic story 'Rotworld' is nearing its end and writer Scott Snyder's latest entry will have Swamp Thing facing off against Rotmonster. Additionally, Swamp Thing will have to make a sacrifice to save the Earth from the rot... but what will it be? Also, discover what secret Bruce Wayne left behind in Gotham! Don't forget, Snyder's last issue will be #18.

Sadly, there's no preview for this one. Instead, here's the review of SWAMP THING #15.

THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #4

Writer Jason Aaron is doing a remarkable job with this Marvel NOW! title. The future doesn't look bright for Thor as the God Butcher's army will defeat him, but won't kill him. Instead, he's left to himself, defeated in a now destroyed Asgard. What does the God Butcher have in store for King Thor?

Feast your eyes on the gorgeous preview below.

Love Old Thor! "Bring me my arm!" I could read Old Thor forever!!! I don't care if Old Thor starts kicking puppies, and huffing airplane glue, I will read it, and I will love it!

Superior Spider-man, Supurbia, Scarlet Spider. I'm looking forward to this week. :)

Posted by YourNeighborhoodComicGeek

Superior Spider-Man definitely.

Thor all the way for me.

I can't wait for the conclusion of/in Point of Impact #4 but I guess that's only me... also in for the next round of the rotworld and, luckily, I haven't even read last month's issues. Looking forward to catching up on the rotten world.

Lots of great comic books and series as of late! Or is is just me again?

Posted by Reignmaker

Psh. First week in a while where none of the "must-reads" line up with my choices. Just two on my list: Shadowman and Fantastic Four. I also thought Deadpool and Hawkeye were supposed to be out but Marvel's shipping schedule is a clusterf***. Nothing on the DC front since I dropped Detective. Should be more eventful next month when Justice League of America starts up.

Action Comics and Superior Spider-Man for me as well as Fantastic Four.

Posted by jobbernos

action comics, swamp thing.

Posted by Smurfboy

Very tempting to get Superior Spider-Man but I have a feeling it'll be gone by the time I get to the store (I don't get off work until 6pm on Wednesday!) Ahh.

Star Wars for me!

Action Comics and Swamp Thing from the list.

Might flip through Superior Spider-Man to see if its worth picking up. But otherwise, I'm getting Animal Man, Detective Comics, and the Green Lantern: New Guardians Annual.

Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus

Superior maybe...Action for sure, and Star Wars for damn certain!

Posted by marvelman2099

maybe Superior spiderman is the only one from this list

Green Lantern: New guardians- Annual????

A small week for me:

  • Superior Spider-Man #1 (+ a variant for once)
  • Thor: God of Thunder #4
  • Cable and X-Force #3
  • The Avengers #3 (is this out or what?)
Posted by Crimsonlord53

Is it just me or dose vader,s helmet looked pinched in that preview art?

Posted by impossibilly

Nice, it looks like the cover of Star Wars says you get the digital copy free if you buy the print comic. Has Dark Horse done this before? It's even better than Marvel's buy the print, get the digital free promotion, as the cover price is $2.99, not $3.99.

That Alex Ross cover is gorgeous. The Force is strong in Mr. Ross.

how come everyone is forgetting about the only true spiderman???

I think ill leave Spider-man on the shelf. Not interested in this concept. Hmmm to buy Star Wars or not. Rights could be going to Marvel soon and it could end so i might leave it.

Posted by BreZeJ

@That60sGuy: Avengers 3 is out on the 23rd and 4 the following week.

Posted by broo1232

Superior Spider-man

Thor God of Thunder

Swamp Thing

Detective Comics

Wolverine and the X-men

Posted by coolguyr99

Where is Sweet Tooth?

Posted by Jawshco

All these look tempting... I'd buy all these and more if I could afford to, but Spidey is my only must buy. However, Clone and Star Wars might also be irresistible.

Posted by stumpy49er

Shadowman is my only must read. I'll grab Avengers Arena as well, which everyone wants to dog on but is actualy surprisingly good. Maybe I'll get FF too. I'm close to just dropping Animal Man.

Posted by MadeinBangladesh

Animal Man and Walking Dead!

Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Posted by snootchie_bootchies

Superdoom? Oh! You mean Doomsday right? Looks like hes in the new 52 now. Sigh... Anyways, Star Wars sounds cool, and I will be picking up Spidey.

Posted by derf_jenkins

If only my essential comics list for a week was just 6 books...I am getting Superior Spidey, Action Comics, Clone and Swamp Thing from this list. The diamond in the rough I am excited about this week is The End Times of Bram and Ben. If there are any fans of Chew out there, this is a book you should enjoy!

Posted by That60sGuy

@BreZeJ: Nice one. I was a bit short of comics that week besides X-O Manowar so this spreads out nicely.
