This Week's Essential Comics: 3/3/14

These are the comics you're looking for.

It's Monday and that means it's time to prepare for this week's new comics! Every Wednesday, a daunting amount of new issues are released and deciding what's worth your money isn't always the easiest decision to make. Well, we here at Comic Vine want to help you out. We've reviewed the full list of new releases and we've each picked a couple or so comics that we're excited to check out. We'll go ahead and tell you why you should consider picking them up, too. Once you're done seeing what we suggest, feel free to chime in with your own top picks!

Tony "G-Man" Guerrero's picks

MOON KNIGHT #1

No Caption Provided

From the moment I started collecting comics, there was something about Moon Knight that immediately captured my interest. Over the years we've seen different series and stories involving Moon Knight and Marc Spector. While the series have come and gone, Moon Knight continues to return. With an All-New Marvel NOW! series beginning and with a creative team of Warren Ellis, Declan Shalvey, and Jordie Bellaire, there is plenty to be excited about.

What has Moon Knight been up to since his last series? That's the big question. He was recently in LA but it appears he's back in New York and he's returning with style. We'll be keeping a close eye on this series to find out what's next for him.

FOREVER EVIL #6

No Caption Provided

The series is quickly approaching its ending. In the very first issue was witnessed a big change for Nightwing. This is the issue that apparently tells us what's in store for Dick Grayson. Besides that, we're also supposed to find out who the mysterious hooded man the Crime Syndicate brought with them from Earth 3 is.

Geoff Johns often releases seeds to long term story lines and it's a safe bet that this issue and series will be paving the way for characters for the foreseeable future.

Check out Newsarama to see the third preview page.

AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #4

No Caption Provided

Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla have turned the world of Archie upside down. When it was first announced that we'd get an Archie series with zombies, many immediately assumed it was a joke or a gimmick. Each issue has proven that is not the case.

This isn't the type of Archie Comics story you would expect. Robert Aquirre-Sacasa and Francesco Francavilla are taking these characters to dark places and there's no telling who will perish next. This isn't just another zombie comic. There is plenty of emotion and hardship included as well.

Honorable Mention: VELVET #4

Mat "Inferiorego" Elfring's picks

CLONE #15

No Caption Provided

At this point, me asking you to pick up CLONE is common knowledge, right? The last issue really changed everything going on in this book, as we find a whole island of female clones, who want their male counterparts to come with them. There's a catch with that proposal though, and no one is going to be on board with it. This is one of Image's most interesting and coolest books and you should be reading it.

LOKI: AGENT OF ASGARD #2

No Caption Provided

I think I may slowly be turning on the Asgardian part of Marvel Comics. I put THOR: GOD OF THUNDER on my Top of the Pile list and now LOKI is on my essentials list. I love the direction writer Al Ewing is taking this book, especially with that reveal page in the last issue, and while some folks say this book is just forcing Loki, an incredibly popular character in the movie franchises, down our throats, I think this book has an extreme amount of potential and can't wait to see what happens next.

THE WALKING DEAD VOL. 20

No Caption Provided

You know how hard it is to trade-wait on this book, knowing that "All Out War" is happening in the single issues? I know there's tons of you folks out there that do the same thing, seeing as WALKING DEAD is one of the highest selling trades, consistently. We were left in the last trade with Ezekiel opening up about his true past to Michonne, while a war boils to the surface featuring Negan and his crew vs... well, everyone. I, for one, cannot wait to see what happens next as this series has been fantastic at developing characters and stories in a horrible, zombie apocalypse.

Gregg "k4tz" Katzman's picks

GREEN ARROW #29

No Caption Provided

Komodo has made his move and you can bet this is going to spell even more trouble for Green Arrow, Shado, and Robert Queen. As Oliver and his allies struggle with the conflict between clans, Diggle has joined forces with Fyff and Naomi back in Seattle as Richard Dragon makes systematically takes control of the city. A hell of a lot of is going on to expand Oliver's world and the characters that surround him, and Jeff Lemire has been doing a stellar job every step of the way. Throw Andrea Sorrentino's always gorgeous artwork into the mix and you have yet another must buy issue of GREEN ARROW. Seriously, I can't stress enough how good this book is.

Go to Newsarama to read the final preview page.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEADPOOL #4

No Caption Provided

We're now shuffling towards the end of Cullen Bunn's twisted limited series. Deadpool wandering around during the zombie apocalypse has been quite a ride, offering both laughs and disturbingly bleak moments. Based on all that has occurred, I wouldn't be surprised if Bunn hits us with a dark and thoroughly depressing conclusion. Is Deadpool destined to be forever alone in this new world? Unfortunately for him, that seems to be the case. At any rate, Bunn's delivered big time with this series so I'm legitimately anxious to see how he plans to wrap it all up. Plus, more of Ramon Rosanas' artwork is always a good thing.

STARLIGHT #1

No Caption Provided

As someone who liked Flash Gordon and such as a kid, how could I possibly hope to resist a book that's being called "a swashbuckling space adventure"? Teaming up with artist Goran Parlov, Mark Millar's new Image series will revolve around the life of a man who has retired from his cosmic adventures yet he's now being pulled back into his previous lifestyle. So, it basically sounds like The Incredibles but with a sci-fi twist, and that's something that absolutely has my attention.

Honorable Mention: FOREVER EVIL: ARKHAM WAR #6

Corey "Undeadpool" Schroeder's picks

NOVA #14

No Caption Provided

We've now come to a place where Gerry Duggan is comfortably in the driver's seat of Sam Alexander's story and we're now bringing in the Scarlet Spider alum David Baldeon. But enough about the "creators" who will be "supplying the talent to make this book entertaining," BETA RAY BILL'S HERE! He's and Nova are going to fight giant robots, PROBABLY FROM SPACE! I love this title. I love its whimsical, wonderful tone, it's beautiful staging and art and the storytelling that's all-ages without being condescending. It's not shying away from some fairly heady issues, but it's ultimately an uplifting, bright and shiny book.

UNCANNY X-MEN #18

No Caption Provided

Cyclops is in someone's crosshairs on the cover of this title (or... I mean not even "in" the crosshairs, he's directly at barrelpoint), and while I can't wait to see whether or not that happens, or even happens literally or in metaphor, but when we last checked in with Bendis' title, Scott Summers had drummed one of his students out and another one had faced trauma she wasn't ready to discuss. With Marcus Rudy taking over artistic duties, I'm excited as I've ever been to see where my favorite X-roster team is going, particularly as we sink our teeth into this newest storyline.

SHE-HULK #2

No Caption Provided

I'm not sure it's possible for me to leave Charles Soule off my weekly essential list, but his ubiquity along with the quality of his writing justifies that just fine, as far as I'm concerned. His debut of She-Hulk #1, along with Javier Pulido, got the character back to her lawyering roots, but made it clear that it wouldn't shy away from whizz-bang superhero action either, creating an excellent middle ground that lets Shulkie seek out her own tone while not treading too far into unknown territory. And that tone, so far, is definitely one of humor and wit, a trend I hope to see continue.

Honorable Mentions: INVINCIBLE UNIVERSE #11, GREEN LANTERN#29

Is Marvel really dominating the industry to a level that almost half of the books on this list are distributed by them? That's crazy. Excited about Nova and Forever Evil personally.

@lifeboy: I'm enjoying it very much. It draws you in and makes care for the 3 characters right away. It has a serious tone to it but it has quite a few funny moments too. And it answers what dogs are saying when they are barking! That's worth it right there. Ha! I don't think you will be disappointed in it when you read it.

Ok week for me.

Forever evil #6

Eager to see the fate of Nightwing and what this thing the Crime syndicate is so afraid of. hope it dosn't disappoint.

Green Lantern #29

Just getting the next issue or so to finish off. I love Hal and all but this series has become dull with no direction.

Phantom Stranger #17

The end of the PS part in this crossover. Also Trigon on the cover and Spectre showing up in the last part should be good.

Batman/Superman annual (Maybe)

This looks to be good but 6 bucks is a hefty price tag so we'll see.
