This Week's Essential Comics: 10/7/13

These are the comics you're looking for.

It's Monday and that can only mean one thing: new comics are approaching! There will be a sea of new material to dive into this Wednesday, but narrowing down the options can be a wee bit tough sometimes -- especially if you're working with a budget. Because of that, we here at Comic Vine will tell you every Monday which brand new comics have us beyond excited and why we're anxious to read them. We've checked out the list of new releases and we've each picked a few we simply can't wait to check out. Once you're done seeing what we're stoked for, be sure to chime in with your own list of essential comics.

Tony 'G-Man' Guerrero's picks

BATMAN #24

No Caption Provided

It's hard to believe this is only the fourth part. Perhaps Villains Month taking over in September has made it feel longer. We've also been hanging onto every tiny bit of detail that Scott Snyder has been giving us on this look at Bruce Wayne's early days after returning to Gotham.

This has been far from your typical Batman story. Heck, Batman has actually really appeared. We're seeing Bruce Wayne as he evolves into the crime fighter we all know. He's making mistakes and acting pretty brashly at times. But knowing where this will go along with the new mysteries and plots makes this a fascinating read. Greg Capullo and the rest of the team are making sure this is visually an epic as well.

It should be noted this issue will have a slightly higher cover price but that is due to the issue being oversized. This makes up for the lack of a chapter in the story last month. Getting more from Snyder and Capullo is well worth the price.

You can check out the full preview over at USA Today.

SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #1

No Caption Provided

There may be some questioning whether or not we need a title focusing on just Superman and Wonder Woman. From what we've seen of the two together, this will be something cool.

It's safe to say this won't just be a series about a couple of superheroes dating. The couple instances we have seen these two together in the pages of JUSTICE LEAGUE, it's been really interesting. In the New 52, these two haven't had a chance to really bond with others. They have discovered they do share some similarities. That has driven them closer together. Throw in the fact that if you combine their might along with their rogues galleries, there are so many possibilities.

Charles Soule has stated there will be a mix in terms of the storytelling. We'll get some big action along with furthering who these two are. Tony Daniel has been a little vocal as well on how he feels about his current work. You can tell that he is truly proud of what he is doing. It's always great when an artist enjoys what they're working on and truly dive into their work.

There will likely be a lot of eyes on this title. Soule and Daniel are bringing their A game to this and if this gives both characters another chance to jump into the spotlight, that will be great for fans.

THE WALKING DEAD #115

No Caption Provided

It's crazy to believe we've been reading THE WALKING DEAD for ten years now. Robert Kirkman has taken the simple idea of zombie survival and turned it on its side. Month after month we've seen crazy stories and situations. It's almost impossible to imagine what Kirkman will have planned for the new storyline.

With a war breaking out between different factions of humans, this multi-part story takes us into a slightly new territory in the world or Rick Grimes. He may have had to fight the Governor before but this is on a different scale. With the series celebrating its ten year anniversary, you have to assume we'll be seeing some insane events unfold. Charlie Adlard will have his hands full and it's going to be a great time to be a WALKING DEAD fan.

You'll also have some choices in terms of a cover! There will be twelve different ones with ten forming the image up above.

Honorable Mentions:

GREEN LANTERN CORPS. Part One of Lights Out had an interesting cliffhanger. Trust me, you won't want to miss this issue.

NIGHTWING vs the Prankster. Will he work with Tony Zucco, the guy that murdered his parents, in order to stop Prankster? (You can check out a preview HERE).

EDIT

I totally have to add AFTERLIFE WITH ARCHIE #1 after reading an advanced copy.

No Caption Provided

You can read an early review HERE.

Mat 'Inferiorego' Elfring's picks

COFFIN HILL #1

No Caption Provided

It's yet another new Vertigo series! Last week, HINTERKIND debuted, and it was a lot of fun. This week, Vertigo has a new book called COFFIN HILL coming out, and while thinking everything a company puts out is going to be brilliant or amazing is a terrible thought process to have, with Vertigo, I know these series will be a bit more up my alley.

COFFIN HILL seems like the perfect book for October and Halloween. From the looks of the solicit, it deals with curses, darkness, and witchcraft. Plus, it opens up with someone covered in blood!

This is the first go at comics for Caitlin Kittredge, but she's a notable author of the NOCTURNE CITY series and BLACK LONDON, so it should be a well pieced together story.

There's a ton of books I'm looking forward to this week, but COFFIN HILL jumps ahead because I want to read something spooky.

Check out our interview with Caitlin HERE.

GHOSTED #4

No Caption Provided

Speaking of spooky, it's time to read a whole comic about spooks/ghosts/specters/ghastly visages because issue #4 of GHOSTED is here! Image is another company putting out some dynamite series of a wide variety of genres. Again, it's October, and Halloween is coming up, so I'm in the mood to read something with a horrific twist. That's one of the reasons GHOSTED made the list this week. The other reason it's here is because I love this series.

Issue #3 of this series was pretty awesome. The ghosts finally came out to "play," and by play, I mean scare the poop out of people and maybe get a tad violent. We also get more and more into the history of the Trask Mansion as well. This series has been a blast thanks to the creative team of writer Joshua Williamson and artist Goran Sudzuka. Every issue, so far, has made my Top of the Pile list. Try this book out, not only because Halloween is coming up but because it's spooktacular! See what I did there? Nailed it!

Gregg 'k4tz' Katzman's picks

DEADPOOL #18

No Caption Provided

This isn't just one of the best Deadpool stories I've read... it's one of the best stories I'm currently reading. This book has had no problem making me laugh time and time again, but now it's doing something truly special: it's bringing serious Deadpool and doing it with so much talent. Sure, co-writers Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn still sprinkle lines here and there that make me smirk or even burst into laughter, but this story is doing a phenomenal job with its pacing and hitting us with all kinds of emotions.

'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' is now three for three, and I have no reason at all to believe this fourth chapter will be a letdown.

Oh, if for some reason beyond me you need an additional reason: Declan Shalvey is illustrating and his rough style makes this narrative even more immersive and powerful.

Check out the full preview in our PREVIEWS FORUM.

ETERNAL WARRIOR #2

No Caption Provided

Valiant has added yet another superb book to its catalog? Color me not surprised at all.

On the surface, ETERNAL WARRIOR seems like something we've seen a gazillion times before. "Oh look, it's an immortal badass being badass." But trust me, it's more than that.

Writer Greg Pak is clearly aiming to make the title character-driven and illustrate why Gilad's not a total cliche. Gilad's bloodlusted yet an honorable and a selfless leader who's had quite an adventure over the years. Don't get me wrong, Pak's obviously including plenty of bloodshed along the way, but the premiere issue had me hooked and I'm totally anxious to see the path he has planned for Valiant's character.

THOR: GOD OF THUNDER #14

No Caption Provided

I never thought I'd see the day where a Thor book was one of my absolute favorites from Marvel, but here we are and it's all thanks to one man: Jason Aaron.

The amount of wonder and epicness crammed into this series is unparalleled. This latest story may not have the same scale as the last one (it's really not possible to top that), but it's a totally different kind of threat and it'll be fascinating to see how Thor is tested along the way.

Plus, this latest challenge will take us to all of the realms and that's sure to be enthralling -- even if it isn't for the locals in each one. You're really missing out if you're not reading this one, people.

Check out the full preview in our PREVIEWS FORUM.

SUICIDE SQUAD #24

No Caption Provided

So begins Matt Kindt's SUICIDE SQUAD run. Sure, I wasn't exactly the biggest fan of his Harley Quinn Villains Month issue, but his Deadshot issue was great and I've really enjoyed some of his other work.

It'll be particularly interesting to see who's on the new team and how they'll tie into the bigger events playing out in FOREVER EVIL. We've all seen Kindt has no problem delivering a more dark and tragic tone, but it'll be critical to see how he juggles all of the characters and whether he still can manage to incorporate a fun vibe into the mix as well.

Moreover, this issue sees the return of Patrick Zircher, an incredibly talented artist who has a style that's just perfect for this kind of book. Ales Kot put this title back on my radar... hopefully now Kindt will be able to keep it there.

You can check out the full preview over at UPROXX.

Honorable Mention: ARKHAM WAR #1

Jen 'MissJ' Aprahamian's picks

THREE #1

No Caption Provided

THREE is an epic Spartan tale, but not the one we're used to. Penned with the assistance of a historical consultant, this new series from Kieron Gillen approaches the bloody history of that era from an oft-ignored vantage point: that of the slaves who bore the weight of Sparta's society.

THREE is going to tackle the subjects of freedom, politics, and humanity from a fresh angle, and should definitely be on your new-series-to-watch radar.

Check out the full preview over at CBR.

FBP: FEDERAL BUREAU OF PHYSICS #4

No Caption Provided

FBP: FEDERAL BUREAU OF PHYSICS (formerly COLLIDER) is quirky, fun, and full of SCIENCE!

I've been enjoying the pushing and pulling of scientific laws, boundaries, and theories, and loving the ride that Oliver and Rodriguez have been taking us on.

If you're a science geek, love what-ifs and pocket universes, or are a fan of Vertigo's latest offerings, this one is a must-pull.

Sadly, there is no preview for this issue just yet.

ROCKET GIRL #1

No Caption Provided

From Kickstarter success to full-fledged Image series, ROCKET GIRL is taking us back to the future in its debut this week.

Strap on your jetpack, and get ready for this original series by Brandon Montclare and Amy Reeder, with a sassy teenage heroine and an alternate timeline situation that promises plenty of adventure.

Corey 'Undeadpool' Schroeder's picks

MARS ATTACKS JUDGE DREDD #2

No Caption Provided

The last issue surpassed my already high expectations, not only perfectly integrating the Mars Attacks universe into Judge Dredd through an organic storyline, but even providing its own take on the narrative trading cards that brought the ultra-violent 1950s send-up into pop culture consciousness. And if there's anything that gels well with ultra-violence, it's obviously Judge Dredd.

With Al Ewing and John McCrea still on the book, there's no reason to believe the screams, and cackles, will stop anytime soon.

Check out our exclusive preview right HERE.

AVENGERS ARENA #16

No Caption Provided

I've evangelized this book since issue #1. Some have come around to my way of thinking, others haven't, but through thick and thin, this book has remained engaging and interesting to read, mixing savage intensity with nail-biting suspense.

We're coming to the end of the first "season" of Murderworld, and the plot is going in some very interesting directions, but there's still clearly plenty of story left to tell and I can't think of anyone better than series regulars Dennis Hopeless and Karl Moline to take us to the finale.

Check out the full preview on our PREVIEWS FORUM.

CHEW #37

No Caption Provided

It's a hard thing for a comedy book to turn so sharply into intense drama and not feel like an undeserved shift. But John Layman and Rob Guillory have done just that without sacrificing either.

This is still one of the funniest books on the shelf, but the storylines have getting very subtly and gradually darker as they've progressed until we've arrived here. A lot of seemingly divergent storylines and threads are coming back together in absolutely fascinating ways, and it's always nice to see seemingly forgotten plot points paid off.

Fearless Defenders - It's probably going to be the best Infinity tie-in (maybe after "The Heist" which promised to be hilarious)

Thor: God of Thunder - Best Marvel series at the moment imo

X-Men - Battle of the atom = Best event this year

Uncanny X-Force - Looks like Spiral finally takes center stage

Avengers Arena - I'm still curious how the story continues every month

I find it interesting that aside from the one I've already read (Rocket Girl #1) and, of all things, an Archie comic (which I have never read), not a single "essential" book this week appeals to me, and several actively offend me.

...and I continue to maintain that the opinion of a person who calls "Avengers Arena" good without accounting for its egregious mischaracterizations and continuity-flaws-so-enormous-they-must-be-considered-a-retcon-of-years-worth-of-stories is worthless.

This week I am getting Batman, Nightwing, and Batgirl. I believe my friend is getting Superman Unchained. That new Suicide Squad looks and sounds great! Happy to see Patrick Zircher having DC comic after I first saw his work in the Captain Cold Villain's Month though I was hoping he'd be on Flash soon.

Also is this going to be the first appearance of Steel in the New 52? I haven't seen or heard of him around the New 52 universe yet.

  • Suicide Squad #24
  • Superman/Wonder Woman #1
  • Infinity #4
  • Thor #14
  • X-Men #4
  • Owl #4

I'm unsure about Rocket Girl and I hope Suicide Squad doesn't suck after the loss of the previous writer. And I really got to check out Rachel Rising some time.

EDIT: I notice the comics I'm interested in are all 1s and 4s.

Whenever @inferiorego recommends a Vertigo title, I listen. I have yet to be disappointed! Will be checking out Coffin Hill. (Also -- the preview shown in the back of Hinterkind was good enough to consider it anyway).

Out of this weeks essential comics, I'm picking up...

  • Batman #24
  • Superman/Wonder Woman #1
  • Coffin Hill #1
  • Deadpool #18
  • Eternal Warrior #2
  • Thor: God of Thunder #14
  • Suicide Squad #24

Considering adding Three #1 and Rocket Girl #1. Both seem interesting.

@bigalwilliams: If there are more pages of story its logical that it costs more. According to Scott Snyder theres going to be around 53 pages of Greg Capullo art and around 12 pages of Rafael Albaqurque art. Thats a TON of goodness for 7 dollars. Issue 25 will also be oversized so once again it makes sense. Its not a permanent thing, these will just be 2 HUGE issues of the storyline so they wanted to make each issue longer.
