This Week's Essential Comics: 07/15/13

These are the comics you're looking for.

It's time to get stoked over this week's new comics! We've reviewed the full list of new releases and there's definitely something for everyone this Wednesday. From big events to lighthearted fun, this is looking like it'll be another rather awesome Wednesday. Once you're done reviewing what we're excited for, be sure to chime in with your own essentials!

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #6

No Caption Provided

This could almost be left blank. It should all speak for itself.

If you read last week's JUSTICE LEAGUE #22, you know Trinity War has kicked off with an explosive beginning. All the players have pretty much arrived and we saw the set up for the gigantic clash between some of DC's powerhouses.

Of course there was also a kind of big shocking event that happened during the battle. If you've read the solicit for this issue, it looks like we'll be seeing some immediate fallout as "one hero is arrested and another goes rogue." For those that were upset over the events, it also sounds like there will be some clarification over what happened and how.

If all that was not enough, how about the fact that Geoff Johns is reuniting with Doug Mahnke. That says it all.

FF #9

I've likely expressed my love and joy over Matt Fraction and Mike Allred's FF. I've said it many times, this is a hilarious and entertaining comic that has some serious dark elements underneath the surface.

As for this issue, how dark might things get? Well, check out the solicit:

* What happens? POOL PARTY.

* Who do they fight? POOL PARTY.

* What do we get? POOL PARTY.

Who doesn't want to read an issue featuring a pool party? It's a safe bet there will be more to the issue than just a pool party. But even if there wasn't, done in Fraction and Allred's style, it's guaranteed to be a great time.

THE X-FILES SEASON 10 #2

No Caption Provided

I was a huge X-Files fan. The show was different from the other stuff on the air. I've even recently started re-watching the series. Last month's first issue by Joe Harris and Michael Walsh brought us back into the life of Mulder and Scully. As a consequence of their years poking around in government secrets, they've been forced to live a discrete and quiet life.

Unfortunately, the peace and calm they've known has been shattered after getting visited by an old friend who informed them they all had a big target on their backs.

We had a pretty big cliffhanger and this issue is shaping up to be exactly what fans of the show would want. We may not be able to get new episodes but this is the next best thing.

CBR has the rest of the preview.

Honorable Mentions: Gail Simone's RED SONJA #1, 100 BULLETS BROTHER LONO #2, NOVA #6, UNCANNY X-FORCE #8

WHAT IF? AVX #2

No Caption Provided

I've always been a sucker for WHAT IF? books. It's probably my favorite things about Marvel comics and it's a huge part of my childhood. Also, another one of my favorite things is the writing of Jimmy Palmiotti. Put both of these together, and my head explodes from trying to contain all that is fanboy within me.

Jimmy puts his own spin on the recent AVENGERS VS X-MEN event, and what I love best about this is that it is a 4-part series, not just a one shot. I loved the first issue and the spin Jimmy put on it. (No, I'm not spoiling it) I cannot wait to see the outcome of the end of issue one this week. The first issue, as well as this one, are two books you really need to buy.

ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN #25

No Caption Provided

If you've been coming to this site for a while, you know by now that I'm also a huge fan of the Marvel Ultimate Universe.

The last issue, featuring the origin of Cloak and Dagger was fantastic, and most Spidey-fans are waiting for Miles to put the costume back on. Could issue #25 be the one that makes Miles put the costume back on? We'll find out this week.

Another reason you need to jump on this book is the art of David Marquez. I've been following this guy (yes, I'm an art stalker) for a couple years now, and I love his style. It fits this book so well.

DEADPOOL #13

No Caption Provided

Deadpool... with an afro. If that doesn't get your attention, I just don't know what will.

If you read DEADPOOL #7, then you know these "lost" issues have the potential for a big amount of laughter and overdose of fun as Wade dives into the past. This chapter jumps into the '70s and will co-star Power Man and Iron Fist. That alone should sell you on it, but I'll elaborate a little more just because I'm generous like that.

While chapter 7 seemed like a hysterical standalone adventure, it was used to pave the way for the next big story. Based on the preview alone, this issue is definitely sure to be another dose of great comedy, but if we're extra lucky, it'll also plant some plot points for Wade's next big story... a story which will co-star Captain America and Wolverine.

HARBINGER WARS #4

No Caption Provided

It's the conclusion to Valiant's first big event! If you've been following along, then you know this is going to be an explosive issue. All of the key groups are finally in Las Vegas and you can bet it's going to be an absolutely insane serving of epic chaos. Who will reign supreme? How will this impact all of the titles? This issue is going to deliver a huge punch to the Valiant universe and you really shouldn't miss it.

And if you haven't been following along, you have two days to fix that gigantic mistake. The publisher provides a more than thorough and highly detailed introduction with every chapter, so go buy issues one through three and catch up before Wednesday. Unless you happen to hate good stuff. Then please feel free to ignore this. But if you do enjoy reading things that are quite awesome, you may want to consider giving this a shot.

Honorable Mention: TMNT Villain Microseries #4 Alopex

Corey 'Undeadpool' Schroeder's picks

BATWOMAN #22

No Caption Provided

JH Williams and Haden Blackman have taken a great character and completely reinvented her in a way that seems both organic and groundbreaking. Not only is Batwoman Gotham's resident supernatural expert AND D.E.O. agent, but she's even taking on the #1 Bat in the city. I personally can't wait as I believe Batman's metapopularity may have even gone to the Dark Detective's head, in a strange way, and I can't think of anyone better to take him down a peg than Katherine Kane. I am truly excited to see how this all shakes out.

INVINCIBLE #104

No Caption Provided

The Image book that just keeps on giving. Invincible has been one of the most consistently fantastic books over the last several years with one of the best rogue's galleries and absolutely some of the most mind-wrenching cliffhangers I've ever encountered. Last issue left off on one of the biggest yet with Eve in dire straits at the hands of Angstrom Levy, who just doesn't seem to know how to stay down. Oh and Invincible is trapped in another dimension with the most unlikely (or perhaps likely) of his enemies. Oh and the Maulers are back...so I'm happy as can be.
