This New Character in Batman #1 Could Have a Big Future Role

Did you catch this other new character in the first issue of Batman?

DC's 'The New 52' Batman #1 was released yesterday. The issue earned a five-star review as well an analysis of what was new and what has changed in the 'New 52.' With Scott Snyder writing, it's clear we're in for some big surprises. If we've learned anything from his run on Detective Comics (besides he's a great writer), it's that there are always hidden elements in this stories. When reading the first issue, one page (group of panels struck me as peculiar).

As Bruce Wayne was giving his speech at a gala, we saw some familiar facies. I recognized Commissioner Gordon (with his new red hair), the new mayoral candidate Lincoln March, Leslie Thompkins and then back to Bruce. These were all major characters. So who the heck was that girl/woman? I thought at first, could that be Selina Kyle? It couldn't be since she has long hair and short hair in Catwoman #1.

Rather than try to go through all the other female characters in the Bat-universe, I decided to ask Scott Snyder himself.

Snyder replied:

You'll have to wait and see, but I will say this, she is in a sequence of important characters, so… :-)

If that's not a tease, I don't know what is. Could this be a major new character or just a new neighbor hanging around Bruce's neighborhood. Buy your issues of Batman #1 now just in case this turns out to be someone later. Or maybe I'm just reading too much into things.

It's nice to know there's planned purpose, and not just a warm body to fill a panel.

I didn't even put that together until I read this, I would bet she does pop up again as an important character.

Rachel Dawes hahaha

Isn't she that whoever reporter girl he's been dating? She was brought up in Detective Comics #1, where Batman told Alfred to patch things up because he liked her more than the others, and the solicts for Batman #2 mention the romance between Bruce Wayne and the reporter. Not sure if either 2 girls are the same person, and I can't check right now, but I'm fairly certain that's who it is.

I hope with the new reboot, Leslie Thompkins' "scheme" during War Games has gone the way of Red Arrow's missing arm, Lian Harper's existence and Starfire's modicum of dignity. 8 )

I thought this would be about the Mayoral candidate. Whenever Bruce interacts with a character from Gotham's upper crust by name they have a big role in the story. And when they're males they tend to be the identity of a new villain. I could totally see dude as the identity of "The Owl".

Finally, some answers! This is clearly what the Mystery Woman looks like when she takes off her glowing pink hood. Rrrrow! ;)

Really though, I think you're right to rule out Selina, G-Man. Not only because of the long hair, but this Jane Doe has blue eyes, whereas Catwoman's are bright green. Of course, I wouldn't put it past Ms. Kyle to don a wig and contacts to be able to "brush purses" incognito with some of Gotham's wealthiest.

Can't wait to find out!

@JonesDeini: Eh, I just don't see him as a threat; which of course could be exactly why its a good twist, although it does have to be believable. And from solicits it sounds like we have more than one. 'Coven of Owls.'

But we all know that the REAL owl is Bruce Wayne's long lost older brother Thomas Wayne Jr.

If Bruce had said that his father's saying was "Why do we fall?", then I would totally be agreeing with you. :p

AKA, fyck you.

Why the hell do DC writers think they can shit all over fans? "I made it clear that she's an important character, but I didn't tell you who she was... haha!"

Fyck you.

It's Talia!!! ...no?

Well Scott has gotten me hooked on Batman right from the start, so i can't wait to find out who she is and what/who Lincoln will turn out to be.

um in Detective Comics when Bruce returns to the cave Alfred says that he forgot about a second date with some woman....could this be her? Can't remember her name but it sounded like they had dated for a bit so it would make sense she would be at the gala.

I can't wait to see who is she...

Selina Kyle would be far too easy an assumption to make. I'll just be silly and put my money on Andrea Beaumont.

I was more interested in the man in the very beginning where bruce was in arkham asylum. The one sitting there in the shadow's reading a book...

Hmm... Didn't notice the girl. Actually, I kinda didn't really observe that panel. Though, as for Lincoln March, I'm thinking he's the owl dude... :3

Bruce has a daughter..a new "she"Robin

Helena has blue eyes and black hair....

A lot of women we can see around Bruce but i think this shouldn't be a new girlfriend............i'll read this soon to find out.

Posted by christopherwalken

If she's a new character, I would like to suggest names for both her public, everyday life (Margot LePhlem) and her superhero / supervillain alter ego (The Scarlet Escargot). There.

Posted by mcgregorp

she could be a villian

Posted by lionellaflare

If her names Rachel I'm gonna vomit..

I loved #1 and now they are already teasing me about #2. I can't wait, I hope it stays just as good or gets better.
