This is What the ‘Daredevil’ Film Could Have Looked Like

Director Joe Carnahan has released his pitch reel for his version of Daredevil. Can you dig it?

With each passing day it’s looking less likely that Fox will fast track a new Daredevil film into production in order to retain the rights to the character, which expire in October. As we reported on yesterday, even director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, Narc), who has been attached to the project, feels his pitch has gone up in smoke. Maybe that makes the director’s next move all the more understandable.

Carnahan has gone ahead and released his “sizzle reel” for his version of Daredevil on YouTube. Carnahan used the fake trailer below to entice Fox executives to let him pursue his idea for the Man Without Fear. Since they clearly haven’t shot a lick of footage for the film, the trailer is a combination of clips from the original 2003 Daredevil flick, animated stills from the comics, and a bunch of footage from other movies to fill in the pieces. The trailer might not be real, but it appears as though Carnahan was on to something with his ‘70s crime drama take.

Here, take a peek.

Sadly, we will probably never see this version of Daredevil come to fruition. Come October, the rights to Daredevil will revert back to Marvel and they will be able to incorporate him into their movie universe. That’s not a bad thing, mind you, but it will probably lead to a much different take on the character than what you see above – one that will play nicer with the light-hearted, fun nature of Marvel’s overarching film universe.

So what say you, readers? Judging from the test footage above, do you think Joe Carnahan had the right angle to make a new Daredevil movie a success? Or are you glad this version is probably going the way of the dodo to make way for Daredevil potentially getting his Avengers membership card in the mail?

Ugh, if only. Sure this wouldn't get as much bad publicity as Affleck's version, I'd pay good money to see this.

This Daredevil story would stand on it's own I think, like the Punisher movies. It's hard to determine how good it would turn out based solely on this video, but I think it has potential. I suppose Carnahan could also just make this movie and turn the daredevil character into some other super powered or in some other way significant protagonist. With Daredevil and Murdock's focus on enforcing the law and stopping criminals in the comic books, a film with the general feel of this trailer could definitely fit.

I am actually looking forward to it going back to Marvel, I think they might have a slightly lighter DD for his first movie back but anything subsequent will be more mature and darker. I just look at Iron Man compared to the sequel, as well as Thor's portrayal in The Avengers compared to his own movie. The trailer wasn't bad but it wouldn't make it a must see in theaters, in my opinion.

At first I was sad that Marvel was getting the rights back, but now I'm sad that Joe Carnahan won't get to make his version of Daredevil. It looked great! A 70s Marvel shared universe would be pretty amazing though...

If anything, this little compilation more or less seems a tribute to Frank Miller's run on DD way back when just from the imagery we've seen here. Its awesome!

Well, I loved hearing 70s music, and I do like having a comic book movie take place in an earlier decade (60s to 80s), but I'm not feeling any real interest.

I'm probably the only person to want this, but if I was doing a Daredevil film, I would have it roughly based when Stan Lee wrote the guy as being so upbeat and practically the only Marvel character in the early 60s to not have any ANGST in his life. Y'know, the way Daredevil was before Frank Miller got his claws on him.I would totally have Gladiator and Stil-Man make appearances. Again, just my opinion.

I don't think you're alone. Why do you think so many people, myself included, love Mark Waid's current Daredevil series? It's fun, upbeat and stars an actual hero being heroic. I love me some dark DD (the Bendis run is my all-time favorite on the character), but the lighter tone version of the character currently running definitely works too.

I couldn't watch a DD film based off of Mark Waid's DD run.I might as well just watch Spider-Man instead

Yes and Marvel makes Disney style films

You're right, I do remember watching Snow White and seeing all of New York blown up and one of the Dwarves getting stabbed in the heart and dying.

you know, if marvel really has the movies planned out for the next 5 years, they should just get carnahan to do this same movie for them, outside of the avengers movie continuity. i dont know if fox owns carnahans script or whatever, but marvel should definitely think about starting to do some stand-alone films and this version of daredevil would have been an awesome place to start.

Yes. Disney did the "No Country for Old Men" movie, which was pretty violent.
Paramount did that film, anyway how exactly would you tie something that dark in to the Avengers?

Disney owns Miramax, Miramax coproduced the movie.

But why does everything have to be dark & gritty? The current DD comic by Waid is great and it's not very dark. Heck maybe Marvel won't even make a DD movie cause it won't tie into the avengers very well. All I know is that if there will be a movie it's mostly likely going to be pg-13 and there can only be so many things you can do in a pg-13 movie. And no don't go start blaming Disney cause it's pg-13.

DING! DING! DING! We have a winner!

Most accurate post on the current state of Daredevil since the run began (and I usually like Mark Waid).

That looked pretty cool, but I'm not too upset that it's not leading to a DD movie. I'm looking forward to seeing the inclusion of Daredevil to the Marvel Cinematic Universe someday, it may be awhile, but I'm excited to see it. I think Disney'll be able to handle his darker tone, reports say Iron Man 3 is supposed to be pretty dark, so that'll define whether or not Disney can cross that boundary. Daredevil shouldn't be hugely connected to the MCU, like regular visits from Thor or Iron Man, but there should be references here and there. We should also keep in mind that Daredevil has interacted with Avengers before while keeping the dark and serious tone, see Born Again.

I really like the feel of the fake, and it has sort of a pulp/Noir feel to it, but maybe it's better that this doesn't happen. Even sound ideas can go bad if they are handled improperly.

Looks like I'm in the minority here, but that did not look good to me. I garnered no real sense of plot or direction. It was just a bunch of unrelated clips spliced together. I'm not sad we will miss this version.

And who liked Drive? It was a whole lot of nothing. It appeared to be attempting depth, but it just lacked substance and shot a bunch of meaningless scenes.

Daredevil should be gritty, but we can have grit and a plot.
