You may have seen some of the set photographs of The Wolverine when the film was being shot in Australia. What we haven't seen much of, however, are close up shots of actor Hugh Jackman in costume as the popular comic book character. Many were wondering what Jackman will look like in this film and whether it would be different than his appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine since the two films are apparently unrelated. Well this weekend we got our first look at both Jackman and actress Rila Fukushima who will be playing Yukio in the film.
Yukio first appeared in WOLVERINE #1 and was considered one of the best mercenaries in the business. She acted as a hired assassin and was tasked with killing Wolverine for the Clan Yashida. She later developed feelings for Wolverine and although those sentiments weren't reciprocated, and maintained a close friendship with the character in the comics. It will be interesting to see the extent of their relationship played out on the big screen.
Will they alter the script to create a romance between the two characters? Will they become allies on screen, or will they be enemies? According to IMDB, Mariko Yashida (long considered the love of Wolverine's life in the comics) will be played by actress Tao Okamoto, although the extent of her appearance in the film is unclear. What do you think, and what would you like to see? Do you think that the movie should stay as true as possible to the original source, or that some creative liberty should be taken with these characters and their story?
