The Walking Dead 3.05 ‘Say the Word’ Discussion

Rick loses his mind, while the illusion of Woodbury being a perfect safe haven is kind of ruined for Andrea.

Spoilers for this week’s episode below. You’ve been warned.

Man, so you thought Rick was crazy before? Now, in the wake of Lori’s death, Rick is officially off his rocker. We’ve slowly been seeing Rick slip further and further from sanity, resembling something that mirrors Rick’s late friend, Shane, and that goes even further in this week’s episode, “Say the Word.”

What’s also interesting about this episode is that it shows an interesting contrast between life for our “good guys” and “Bad guys.” The good guys – team Rick – are living in filth and burying a third of their group. Meanwhile, the bad guys – team Governor – are partying it up, literally. Hell, they have cold drinks for Pete’s sake! Woodbury is painted as a true paradise, although we all know this illusion isn’t going to stick as was hinted at by the episode’s final scene in the town.

Speaking of The Walking Dead’s version of WWE wrestling, “Say the Word” featured quite a few callbacks to Robert Kirkman’s original comic. The boxing match, for instance, was in the original books, albeit far more grim and more a gladiatorial event with someone dying in the end for the audience’s entertainment. Additionally, the Governor taking care of his zombie daughter is from the books, and was pulled off pretty much identically here. And lastly, the ringing phone at the very end of the episode, but we’ll get to that shortly.

We also see more of a divide between Andrea and Michonne in this week, although Andrea probably realized her mistake in not leaving when she witnessed the entire town of Woodbury cheering like savages at the wrestling event. Andrea is definitely in a tight spot without Michonne by her side. This also means that Michonne might finally make her way to the prison and meet Rick and the rest of the gang, leading them back to Woodbury to potentially save Andrea later on.

The other major character to get some time to shine this week, however small it may have been, was Daryl. While we, the audience, don’t buy Carol being dead, he has no reason to think otherwise, what with them stumbling upon her head rag next to the mangled corpse of T-Dog. So the scenes in the nursery where Daryl notices a nametag for Sophia, as well as him paying his final respects for Carol at her grave were quite poignant. It’s kind of interesting to see someone as levelheaded as Rick losing his marbles completely with the dead of a loved one, while a wildcard – at least at the beginning of the show – like Daryl is much more reserved. Also, Daryl feeding the baby was hilarious, although his name giving privileges should be immediately revoked.

Overall, “Say the Word” was another great episode that provided a nice cool down after last week’s tearjerker. We got plenty of great character moments and plenty of winks and nods to the comics for longtime readers.

Oh, and if you’re wondering who’s on the other line….

Interesting!

At first, I was very surprised, too. The once-so-nihilistic Daryl takes care of the baby and new born.

He has always been the most pragmatic guy. Certain things just need to be taken care of.

Here's the baby crying - so feed it.

Btw, I was more surprised how fast the milk was ready....

So we discover Woodbury is simply a gilded lie and have Rick go nuts finally. Good episode and all but for some reason I feel I was just a LITTLE let down considering all the pent up energy I still had from last week's episode. Still good, plus it was kinda nice to see Daryl step up and be a daddy like figure for a change. Who said rednecks couldn't be good papas? Interesting though...we see Rick finally go for the phone but Michonne hasn't "talking" yet.

Judging from the preview for next week, it looks like Andrea might start to accept the Town, and relish in killing Biters, she even goes out hunting for them.

What if the writers are just trolling us and Carol really did die but will have us wait out for her to not return?

It'd make an amusing twist, seeing as the consensus believes she's alive. Sofia 2.0

She "died" but you know, they didn't handle it in the best way. They showed her escaping after T-Dawg made the ultimate sacrifice and then they were all "Oh hey, look, a shawl. Guess Carol's dead. Boo-hoo. Meh. Onto whatever's next" but not even explicitly enough so that you might think she's dead...like, we didn't actually see them bury a carcass.

I was honestly just thinking to myself "Oh, did that actress have to film a movie or something so they're just sort of shooting around her?" so, at this point, she'll probably show up again because it can't possibly be this poorly handled.

I think they're playing Daryl so low key right now because he's gonna have a lot of drama and such when he meets Merle again.

This was a great episode all around. Loved the FX, nicely done. However and this is a minor quibble...I wished the lighting was a bit better where needed. I mean, I know the scenes in the deeper portions of the prison with Rick were supposed to be dark and all but damn, at least use some kind of lighting so the audience can see what the heck is going on!

OK griping aside damn good and can't wait to see next week's episode.

@cattlebattle:

It is possible that more than one zombie went by, dragged the corpse to the back of the room and devoured her as a group. One might have gotten a little over-gorged and couldn't walk - that was the Walker that Rick murdered.

Lori's body was eaten, my friend. The grave for Carol most likely just contains the head cloth.

Yeah, I understand thats what was implied...I just find it kind of weird that thing was able to devour all of Lori...bones and all.

Right, Daryl THINKS she's dead, but we, the audience, know better. What's the old adage: no one's dead until you show me the body? The people in the prison think she's gone to the great beyond, but we never see her body, only a head wrap, so the chances of her being alive are pretty high. Odds are she'll pop up alive somewhere down the road, maybe even next episode.

Why did they dig a hole then?? I don't know, the show as kind of shotty with that whole part. I assume they threw Lori in there seeing as her body was missing T-Dog could be in there too I suppose. I guess we will find out next episode

I don't think she did. The character think so, but we have no reason to believe that. Plus, the preview scene for next week's episode hints she's still very much alive.

I thought the point of Daryl putting the flower on the grave meant that it was Carols....didn;t they have a discussion about a flower at some point last season.

My bro and I were hysterical throughout the episode. I am glad Michonne got the hell up outta that place. Left Andrea to the savages in Woodbury.

Also, Rick went mad.
