The Walking Dead 2.13: "Beside the Dying Fire"

Season 2 wraps up with plenty of blood, guts and gore as Hershel's farm burns.

We've seen the death of Dale. The death of Shane. And now we're finally at the action-packed season 2 finale, "Beside the Dying Fire," or as I like to call it "farmaggedon." So let's not waste any time and dive into the episode's best moments.

As always, you should prepare for spoilers!

Meanwhile, back in Hotlanta...

The show opener reveals how the zombie herd reached Hershel's farm at the conclusion of last week's episode (they started back in Atlanta!). These zombies definitely have ambition and drive. Did you not see how they pushed right through that fence? Sheer willpower!

== TEASER ==

They do move in herds!

Rick and Carl weave through the zombie herds in a scene that reminded me a lot of the gallimimus scene from Jurassic Park. Come on, you thought it too! This leads Rick and Carl into the barn for protection, also leaving them trapped in the process.

Zombie barbecue

Rick and Carl use some team tactics to barbecue a few zombies in the barn. They should have totally done a jumping high-five to celebrate their accomplishment.

Holding down the fort!

The survivors of the farm set out to take the farm back using their surplus of guns and vehicles to snuff out as many undead as possible. Hershel made it clear he didn't have a problem going out in a blaze of glory on his own land. Man, Hershel is totally B-A.

Hershel holds the line…

… Like a boss. Then right as Hershel is about to get taken out by a sneaky zombie from behind, he gets a little help from his friend, Rick, who puts a bullet in the zombies head.

Farewell farm

The remaining survivors have left the farm behind. As Rick tells Hershel, "it's not his farm anymore." However, the group forgot a certain lady with a knack for handgun use…

Glenn plays boyfriend

Glenn drops the "L Bomb" to Maggie to get her to calm down after the farm massacre. Smooth moves, Glenn!

On the highway to Hell

Rick, Carl and Hershel arrive that the rendezvous point, which is the same highway location where the group lost Sophia early in the second season. Eventually Daryl and Carol arrive, as well as T-Dog, Patricia, Lori, Glenn and Maggie. It's a bittersweet reunion to say the least.

Andrea, you're alive!

Left all alone, Andrea takes to the woods with a sack of goods and ammo to take on the zombie apocalypse by herself. And you know what, she's pretty good at it.

The mystery whisper revealed!

We finally know what Dr. Jenner whispered into Rick's ear when they were leaving the CDC at the end of first season. Rick's known all along that everyone carries the viral strain that turns you into a zombie when dead. Rick just lost some street fred as the group's leader for keeping this from everyone.

Following that bombshell, Rick revealed to Lori that he killed Shane in self defense. He also lays out his motivations for why he did so and that he actually wanted Shane dead by that point. Oh, Rick drives the message home by telling Lori that Carl was the one who took Shane out for good.

Understandably, Lori doesn't take all this news too well. However, I fail to see why she's so angry at Rick for what happened in regards to Shane's death. It was either him or Rick. You would think Lori would be obviously flustered, but side with Rick on this one when push comes to shove.

I know that katana!

Everyone, say hell to Michonne -- a badass drifter with a katana and an entourage of zombies. She's one of the comic's best characters, so to see her make her debut in the AMC version of The Walking Dead is a definite treat for longtime Walking Dead fans.

Nazi Rick

Rick confesses to killing his best friend for a bunch of strangers and then declares himself the tyrant of the group. As Rick puts it, "this is no longer a democracy." Hot. Damn.

The prison!

The last shot is definitely a money shot for fans of the comic book source material. It looks like the third season will definitely be set within the walls of the infamous prison. The Governor can't be too far behind!

Final words

And that wraps up season 2 of The Walking Dead. We got some big deaths and a few cool teases for season 3. Overall, season 2 has been hit and miss in this writer's humble opinion. There were some great moments but they were peppered throughout pounds and pounds of filler. With that said, however, I am excited to see Michonne in season 3. So while this season didn't blow me away, consider me a lock for next season to at least see some more katana action.

As one finale note: how the hell is T-Dog still alive?!

What did you guys and gals think of the season 2 finale for The Walking Dead? Sound off in the comments below!

T-Dog being alive is unbelievable, but i think he is going to bite the dust in season 3 ...

as to Season 2, Well i agree, the search for Sophia was too long and i kinda wanted to see more from the group that attacked rick, but they could also be the Governor's lackey's

Posted by The_Tree

I really liked the finale, and I'm more excited for the prison than Michonne. I'm still disappointed at the lack of Tyreese, especially now, considering Rick is into going dictator mode, and I'd love to have someone who's not a total ass (Shane) challenge his authority.

Posted by Dernman

Why is is a surprise that T-Dog is alive?

Posted by Nick-SV(ril)

People saying the show jumped the shark because of Michonne's appearance. Whatever haha. This is easily one of the best things to happen on TV. Still can't fathom the idea that they actually did it almost identical to the comics. I was also hoping for a cyclone fence like prison instead but hey, I'm not complaining.

@The_Tree: Kirkman never ruled out the possibility of Tyreese appearing so one can hope.

Posted by Dernman

Question for people who read the comic. Does Rick mostly remain a good guy or does he go to far with this dictator thing?

Posted by The_Tree

@Nick-SV(ril): And I still hold onto that hope!

@Dernman: He never really went full on dictator, but he did become sort of a jerk for a little while, about 7-10 issues. That is, until he gets punched out by Tyreese and is basically told by everyone that he needs to take break from being leader.

@blofeld666:T-Dog is alive because he is the only one with any since. He keeps to himself especially after what happen to dale. I think the zombies don't even know that he is around lol Its funny how how in the episode he was with two women and was saying hey we are getting out of here( lol he made sure he was the only dude with the two women lol) I do think he will get taken out next season especially since Michonne appeared (They can only have so many black people together on screen at a time. One or two black person minimum lol) Was glad to finally see a bunch of zombies attacking again.

who is going to play the governor?

Edited by SavageDragon

Yea overall i really enjoyed this season. There were defiantly low points for the viewers where it just felt the writers were trying to go with rich character development but it came out as repetitive, flat or just none sense in that situation. (Im looking at you Carl and Lori). That being said i really liked the last 3 episodes and my favorite part that wasnt in the finale is when Rick killed thoes two drifter thugs in the bar with Glenn and Hershel, so BADASS. Really excited for season 3 and Michonne. Well on to Game of thrones!

Edited by Dernman

Just read this. Is this news?

David Morrissey has been cast as The Governor

Merle Dixon, Daryl's older brother will be back in season 3.

Posted by fivestarga

So Rick killed Shane just to become him? Ugh, I prefer the real Shane.

Posted by The_Tree

@Dernman: Yay! Just read it online, Rooker says he's back! I'm excited, hopefully he's with Woodbury and the Governor.

its actually the other way around, shane wanted to kill rick to become HIM. he wanted his life, he wanted his wife and son and the child that lori is carrying as well as control of the group. . he wanted the alpha male status. and rick got fed up and knew the friend he once thought of as a brother was looong gone. he had already given shane 2-3 chances prior and shane attempted murder on him an episode before. so it was clear the choice that rick had to make for the good of the group and his family. essentialy, shane turned...not into a zombie but into insanity.

Posted by SilentButcher

I thoroughly enjoyed Season 2. Even the "filler" parts I felt were somewhat necessary to amp up the tension for the big reveals like Sophia being in the barn and Shane's death. When Michonne showed up in this finale episode I actually jumped off my bed in excitement.

I'm not talking about what could have been, I'm talking about what is. Rick appears to be taking a dictator role, by his admission. Shane didn't do that much but it more than likely that would have been his next logical choice if Rick wasn't in the picture. So, either way the group gets a dictator. Rick becomes Shane.

R.I.P. Jimmy - We Hardly Knew Ye :'(

T-Dog surviving was a real shocker. Especially when he was being such a jerk not wanting to go back it felt they were setting him up as a bastard so he could be killed later.

I'm also surprised Hershel's other daughter survived too. I was expecting her to give up and just surrender herself to the zombies when Patricia died.

I guess they need someone for him to lose in the big prison showdown next season.

Daryl is still the best and most likeable character. I like how he started out as just a redneck racist and is now like the only decent guy around! And I like how he's one of the few who actually think Rick has been making the right calls.

It's also good to see Andrea finally become a badass and not just mini-Shane. Although I'm imagining half of the next Season is just going to be her complaining that the group left her behind.

The whole scene with Michonne really just screamed "we haven't bothered casting anyone yet".

I don't get why everyone is hating on Rick though. Who else is going to lead the group? Superbitch Lori? Useless Carol? Naive Glen? Herschel and Daryl are the only ones who have any sort of leadership qualities and one of them isn't really fit to make tough decisions in this environment and the other feels disconnect from most the group. It all just begs the question: where the hell is Tyreese?

And I'm guessing the helicopter at the start was our friend from the comics and is going to reappear next season and inadvertently lead Rick to Woodbury.

Difference is, I can understand Rick going a bit dictator like. I mean he has tried his hardest since the beginning to keep not only himself, and his family safe, but the entire group, like he said, he never asked to be the leader, but they needed one and he took the role and all the responsibility that came with it, he just found out his best friend wanted him dead, and that his wife might be pregnant with Shane's baby, and had to kill his best friend, after all that the group gets pissy at him because he hid a little secret?? (which in my opinion was the right thing to do to keep up morale) and talk about leaving?? Well he should take a more stern position, he's trying to keep them alive, However, I do think he was talking a bit under the influence of stress given what had just happened, it will probably cool down later on.

What the Hell wrong with Lori !!! it seem to me she was upset with Rick killing Shane and with Carl ,she wont to keep him a little innocent mama's boy, well that not gotta happen in a world fill with deadwalkers, the boy need to toughen up

Posted by 1frankcastle4

Enter Michonne. Been waiting for that scene! Can't wait for the next season. more action and more episodes. We'll get to see the return of Merle, and make way for the Governor!

Posted by KidSupreme

Its was an amazing episode!

Posted by the_fallen11

Rick's speech at the end was my favorite part of the episode. I don't think he was out of line at all, he murked his best friend for these ppl, and they are gonna be ungreatful and say that he can't be trusted? Rick didn't ask to be the leader, these ppl appointed him leader and now after they all loose the farm they are gonna question his leadership? When they need it more than ever. I think Rick was compleatly justified In declaring himself a dictator.

I'm excited for this to happen:

I know the show is a different beast from the comic, but even so it seemed so out of character for Rick to not go back to find Andrea. I thought the season was awesome even the character developement, though with Dale's passing it ruined one of my favorite story arcs.

Posted by X35

@EnSabahNurX: They really went out of their way to avoid showing her. Like they just had some extra in a cloak and thought "we'll find a talented actress for this part next year".

Merle is on the Helicopter! Kirkman said it, no taking it back!

Posted by Decept-O

Why do you question how T-Dogg is still alive? 'Cause he's the black dude? Aww...I don't know..*I joke peeps!* .Actually its about time he at least got a line or two in an episode and did something. Seems like he only had some action in the first couple of episodes and now in the finale. Oh, well.

I agree, Lori's reaction was not expected and quite frankly it has made me hate her even more. I mean, really, Lori?

Can't wait to see the b@d@$$ governor.

Was hoping either Carl, Lori or Carol died...

Edited by hectorsquall

Wow! This episode was really great. As much as I liked Shane, Rick was right, he did the right thing killing him. The only thing I didn't like was Rick telling that he killed Shane, in front of everyone. Sure he was upset but Shane was like a second father for Carl and he was the one who held this group together before Rick's return. It wasn't a smart move and his speech about the end of Democracy didn't help either.

Anyway, Andrea was badass in this episode and the introduction of Michonne was AWESOME !!! I'm really excited about the season 3 and the return of Merle, the prison and the Governor and I really, really hope that we will see Tyreese!

And THIS is Danai Gurira, the actress who will play Michonne:

Hershel was taking down those Walkers, he was prepared to save his farm

Posted by AlKusanagi

Their treatment of Lori is brilliant! People will tune in every week just in the slim hope that she'll meet a violent and fitting death!!!

I don't get all the hate for Carl, though. He's being portrayed extremely closely to his comic counterpart, although toned down a bit since, even with the level of messed up stuff in the show, some of the things Carl does would probably cause TV execs to freak out.

Jimmy's death was really weak....total zombie fodder, but I really enjoyed the way Hershel's character evolved this season, that scene with him and Rick at the meet up spot was deep. Oh and by the way shhhhh with the T-Dog talk, he's the best running joke of the show

Posted by X35

Jimmy's death was really weak....total zombie fodder,

I know... I really wanted them to do something with the character coz he was kinda cute. It was so obvious he was just fodder... he had like one moment the entire season (when he wanted to go hunting for Sophia) and then he didn't even get to do anything in this battle. He didn't even get to fight back when they were coming for him. It was pathetic!!

Apparently originally Dale was supposed to find a dead Jimmy not a dead cow a few episodes back... even worse! Killed off-screen, ha.

It was a really good episode. Can't wait for season 3.

So either T-Dawg is Tyrese (minus daughter and boyfriend) and grow a “pair” season 3, or he inherits Dales fate from the comic books OR Daryl Dixon replaces Tyrese and he and Carol become and Item and he cheats on her with Mishone Or Tyrese (Umm didn’t Laz Alonso get killed in breakout Kings Hint Hint) and his daughter and her boyfriend is in that prison. Plus if Merle Dixon comes back this season I wonder if he gives an “eye for an eye” type justice to a certain character.

Seriously....

This. Every week, all the time.

Totally agree, and I loved the look Rick gave her when she was walking away. Those were the crazy I am gonna kill you eyes. I mean seriously one minute she is telling Shane to stay away from her and her son and then the next she is wanting him with the group and presumably close to her. Shane died because Laura was a selfish bitch who wanted Rick and Shane and now she doesn't have anyone to protector her when Rick finally decides he's had enough of her shit. Of course Rick is a better man then me because she would have been gone a long time ago, especially after I learned about her and Shane.

Posted by ARMIV2

Love the title for this episode (sounds kinda like a U2 song though), but now I'm thinking that they actually should have gone with "Farmaggedon".

But no, this episode was great. I'm really hoping that Rick doesn't Shane out as well though.

Where should i start witth the comic to contine the story from the end of tv-season 2?

Posted by maxicere

Best serie ever

Posted by kimjoshu

Rictatorship. I seriously don't know why people are hating on rick, he clearly had to kill shane since he lured him out to the woods to the do the very same to him. Although this may seem very uncharacteristic of Rick, which is why he's in shock, this would explain his sudden outburst of anger which is also fuelled by Lori's rejection. Rick, I think is obviously remorseful and won't be the old innocent rick he use to be. H

Posted by cincyducksfan35

@deskp: just need to start from the beginning they are each pretty different. characters deaths at way different times from comic to tv

Posted by Nicodemus

Love the comic and love the show and here's my opinion of the character of Lori. She's an instigating (your choice of swear)! She literally told Rick to do what it takes to protect her and Carl from dangerous people (Shane) and now she's pissed because Rick killed Shane? I mean, what the hell, lady? She orchestrated the whole hatred between the two alphas! What else would you expect, Lori? And to be mad that Carl took out walker Shane? What do you think all that gun training was for? Geez, Lori. I really honestly believe that Lori would bang a zombie if it promised not to eat her. I'm serious.

Posted by allpro

Yo to me Rick is the Indian Jones of zombie world!

Posted by laabitres

@Dernman: cause hes black lol

Posted by zackattack529

@fivestarga: i was asnswering your question with an example of what WOULDVE happened. and the point is your wrong, you flat out said "so rick killed shane to become him" and that is incorrect. and he only started ranting like a dictator at the end because he is tired of losing group members all because people think he isnt leader material...so he is still doing the right thing. he' was just under alot of stress.

Posted by clumsyninja

Lori will probably died on season 3 or 4, after she gives birth to her daughter. And for T-Dog I have a feeling will become Tyrese (fingers crossed)

Posted by X35

@clumsyninja: I dunno if this show has the balls to kill off Lori and her kid.

Posted by mickoreo_LZ

Very excited to see an HBO vet take on the role of Michonne. She is the ultimate bad ass in the comics, and I'm thinking Danai Gurira will do her justice.

Very excited to see David Morrisey as the Governor next year. I heard Rooker had to lose 20 pounds for next season. Governor's prisoner? I heard season 3 has 16 episodes so I'm hoping they run through all the prison stuff next season. Theres lots of good material from the 30 issues or so they spent in the prison, and it could make for an action packed season. I wanna see the Governor taking over the prison at the end of this season. Don't drag it out

Jesus H. Christ I'm excited!!!
