The Walking Dead 2.09: "Triggerfinger"

We run down the important moments from this week's episode of AMC's The Walking Dead.

Welcome back. It's Monday again and you know what that means, right? It's time to talk about this week's episode of The Walking Dead. Much like we did with last week's episode, we're going to cover the most important scenes from this week's show and break down why they appear important. So enough with the formalities, let's get right into this week's episode -- "Triggerfinger."

As per usual, spoilers ahead!

Lori takes a nap on the side of the road

No Caption Provided

The opening for this week's episode was surprisingly short and featured not a single word uttered -- unless you count half a scream. We just got a look at Lori passed out in her car after crashing it last week. However, the zombie trying to claw his way inside the car didn't really look the paramedics there to help. Although, he did have some nice jaws of (un)life…

Hershel turns to the dark side

No Caption Provided

After the climax of last week's episode featuring Rick putting multiple bullets into the chests of Dave and Tony, Hershel seems surprisingly calm about it all. In fact, he's even carrying a gun now! The god-loving man full of faith is quickly realizing that the whole world has gone to Hell in a hand basket and he's going to have to quickly adjust with the times.

Dave and Tony's have some friends...

No Caption Provided

It seems as though Dave and Tony were not traveling alone. They were apparently with a posse of folks who are now out looking for them. This leads to a Mexican standoff between Rick, Hershel and Glenn and the Philly travelers, as I'm going to label them.

Daryl is still being a total jerk

No Caption Provided

Carol confronts Daryl about the whereabouts of Lori and he admits that she came to him to go out and find Rick. Daryl also reveals that he rejected her offer, and that missing people aren't his problem anymore. Daryl then takes it a step further and lashes out at Carol. It appears as though Daryl is going through quite the character 180. Is it because he feels like he's lost his purpose in the group now that Sophia is gone, or is it because he thinks himself an outsider after those visions of his brother screwed with his head? Or, is it a little from column A and B?

Homeward Bound -- Lori Edition

No Caption Provided

Shane takes it upon himself to venture out and find Lori. He quickly stumbles across her overturned car with two dead zombies lying about. There was an obvious kerfuffle here. With a concerned look on his face, and thunder sounding off in the distance, Shane runs back to his car to continue his search for Lori.

Hershel's quite the shot

No Caption Provided

While searching the perimeter of the bar, Hershel shows off his talents with a handgun, putting a bullet right into the chest of one of Dave and Tony's Philly friends to save Glenn's life. The shots attract the zombies nearby, cueing the obligatory zombie buffet…

Leave no kid behind

No Caption Provided

Rick might have shot two men without much remorse last episode, but here he shows some sympathy for a kid named Randall from the Philly travelers who falls on a fence, impaling his leg in the process. Rick decides that because he's "just a kid," he's going to save his life and bring him back to the farm with them. Hershel and Glenn go along with the plan.

Daryl continues to slip into madness

No Caption Provided

Hot damn, Daryl says some cold stuff to Carol. There's obviously a lot of romantic tension between squirrel master Daryl and Carol, but they're yet to act on it. Then again, a man that wears zombie ears probably isn't that in touch with whispering sweet nothings into a girl's ear. Hopefully he'll get there soon, because we think Daryl deserves some lovin' too!

Surprise!

No Caption Provided

Ouch. Shane breaks the news to the camp about Lori's baby in probably the worst way possible. Well played, Shane. But if there is some silver lining here at all, it's that Carl actually seems excited about being an older brother.

"The Talk"

No Caption Provided

It's revealed that Lori and Rick never had the "where babies come from" talk with Carl. Although, it seems like he's picked up on the birds and the bees rather quickly judging from the way he felt his mom's belly and asked if it's a boy or girl. Carl -- wise beyond his years, that boy.

Lori reveals to Shane that Rick knows the dirty truth

No Caption Provided

This sends Shane into a quasi rage about what Lori and he had being "real." Of course, Lori denies this, saying the hookups were nothing but a product of the circumstances they were in. Nothing more. Shane is obviously not happy about this.

Randal joins the farm family

No Caption Provided

Rick, Glenn and Hershel arrive back at the farm to the excitement of everyone there. In addition, they've brought along Randal, who reminds me of Kenshi from Mortal Kombat with that blindfold. Admit it, you thought the same thing! The camp is now concerned if Randal's friends will come looking for him, and rightfully so.

Hershel confronts Shane

No Caption Provided

Hershel finally confronted Shane about the drastic actions he took at the barn last season. Essentially, Hershel gave a "This is MY HOUSE!" speech, and Shane stormed off. Classic Shane. All jokes aside, it's nice to finally see someone confront Shane about what he did instead of just letting it slide.

Selfish Glenn

No Caption Provided

Glenn admits to Maggie that she's all he thought about while being shot at. To him, it was a selfish move that shows he can't be counted on during desperate times. Our take? Glenn is being a little hard on himself here. By thinking about Maggie, Glenn is just reinforcing his will to live. In troubled times like these, that's probably a good thing.

Andrea confronts Shane about his "presentation"

No Caption Provided

This scene was actually pretty hilarious. Andrea catches up with Shane outside, giving him a pep talk about how he could potentially improve the presentation of his decision making. Andrea admits that, so far, Shane has consistently made good choices, but he does a bang up job pushing people away in the process. Basically, Shane needs a better PR agent.

Lori furthers the rift between Rick and Shane

No Caption Provided

The AMC version of The Walking Dead is definitely handling the baby situation much differently than the comic book source material. In the comics, Lori and Rick never really talked about who was the baby's daddy. It was a taboo topic. In the show, it's the polar opposite; Lori and Rick actually sit down and have a very mature, adult conversation about the impending bundle of joy.

This sequence also furthers the rift between Rick and Shane, as Lori manages to get into Rick's head to make him believe Shane is a danger to not only the other survivors in the camp, but also Lori, Carl and the unborn baby, which Shane believes wholeheartedly is his own.

The episode ends with Lori asking her husband if he's willing to kill the living again to protect his wife, son and unborn baby. By the look in Rick's eyes, the answer to that question is obvious…

Final word

And that wraps up another episode of The Walking Dead. Overall, "Triggerfinger" was another slow one, yet it feels like things are about to be turned up to 11. The rift between Rick and Shane is getting larger by the day, and it's going to come to a head sooner or later. Let's hope it's the former rather than the latter.

What did you guys think of this week's episode?

Am I the only one who really HATES Andrea in the show?

I really like her in the comics, but in the show I can't stand a single word she's saying. Don't get me wrong...not because of bad writing...I think they just made it easy to not like her in the show ;)

I'm very excited to see how things turn out for her when Shane's end is finally here.

Also I'm wondering how things will turn out with Rick's role as a leader when Randal's friends start coming after the group

Not nearly enough shaved head-rubbing by Shane to make this a fulfilling episode for me. Sorry.

One word describes this show for me at this stage: boring.

After spending the entire first half of the season on the farm it finally seemed that we were going to start seeing some new stuff, but nope. Rick, Glenn, and Hershel run into another group, finally we get to see something that would obviously be your biggest threat in a "zombie" apocalypse other people. Nope a little gun fight and they leave. If next weeks show doesn't drastically pick up the pace or something insane doesn't happen I will no longer be watching.

Also I am calling it now, something is going to happen and Lori will not have the baby.

This show has been far more than satisfactory so far. It perfectly blends a magnificent display of action and pulse-pounding moments of sheer terror while also raising some very important and profound philosophical questions. What edges will a man go to if his family is ever at all threatened? Can those edges ever be defined? What is family? What is man without his tools of defense and destruction?

I love the show it is great. But I prefer the book over the show 10 times out of 10. Both have good character development, but the book is better.

And I think in the end it is hard to compare the two because events are happening, are happening at different times and events are added or ignored from book to show.

"The jaws of undead life". Love it. A bit convenient Lori surviving so easily without nary a scratch....or did she? It was hard to tell if she may have been bitten or scratched by one of the Zombies. Wonder if the accident will have an affect on the baby. Having her conveniently found by Shane, I don't know, just seemed too...convenient. Shane.,.well..don't know, at least Hershel told him what's what.

Lori did NOT help matters. Yes she was right to talk to Rick about all Shane had done and said but she went about it the wrong way. Sadly I've done that myself recently but that is another story,. It seems like she was trying to stir Rick up NOT attempt to resolve the problems Shane created for a lot of people.

Hershel can still be a man of God and defend himself and his family. He didn't go to the dark side. He did open his eyes, though, to get his butt in gear and do what is right. With his marksman skills makes me wonder about his past, Military or otherwise or if he's just a dang good shot.

Totally agree, Glenn is being WAY too hard on himself and his woman is forgiving him for it but he won't. DUDE! I think Glenn is a great character and hate seeing him act this way.

Daryl....what...the...heck...dude. Yeah, rather crude and mean things he's said, obviously a lot of baggage. He's pushing people away, and who's to say why right now, I have my suspicions but I am not liking how he's acting.

Good episode, could have had more action. With Hershel's daughter in a coma/shock and now the new kid who will be called "limpy", makes the responsibilities of Hershel, Rick and everyone else a lot heavier.

@Afro_Warrior: Big time Lady Macbeth HOWEVER!!!!!!,

I have hated almost every decision Lori has made throughout this show and can not wait until she meets her demise. Yet the conversation she has with Rick at the end of the show was maybe the smartest thing she has ever done. I don't believe her exact intention is to gear Rick's mind up for killing Shane rather I think she wanted to make it very clear to Rick how Shane is delusional and dangerous.

@UpUpAndAway: Yeh, it was totally not in her character to "seduce" her husband into hating Shane more. Maybe Hollywood would say it was because of her hormone levels, fleeing to her husband for safety. This was almost a reason to turn off the program for me. DRAMA!!

I haven't read all of the comics so I can't comment on which is better or any of that. I don't really mind the "slow pace" that everyone complains about in the show however. I think its more realistic to have them not encounter hoards of zombies every episode. Also it makes the show more like the comics in the sense that The Walking Dead isn't about zombies - it's about people. Focusing on how people react and the decisions they make in an apocalyptic world is what makes both the show and comic great. May not be your normal zombie apocalypse, but to me its more interesting.

Also Carl should kill Shane this season, and Lori needs to die before having that baby. I don't want them to cop out and have her have a miscarriage or something stupid

Erik, ya gotta understand, Rick and his people are doing what they have to do in self defense. This is war, and you eliminate your enemies. As with Randal, I think they just made a mistake with trying to save him in that tense situation with life or death. I was expecting any of them, Rick, Glen, Hershel to just realize that time is short and say, "I'm sorry kid" and put him down so they can move on. But I do agree with you, Hershel is a damn good shot. I'd want him in my fox hole anytime.. if anything to help keep me with a cool head. Good episode. :) Worried about where it's headed though with Randal...

i cant agree that its better, but this season has produced two episodes now that could rival most of the best issues of the comic. This episode and the one right before the break.

We are too early on to compare the two (the comic is nearing 100 issues of epic and the show isnt even a quarter done with the story), but i dont think the show can ever surpass the comic simply because they are trying to make it different, and we have all seen that even the best show ideas tend to go sour the more the writers try to be unpredictable and unique. However, even if the show goes out on top, i doubt i can ever say its better. Just different. i mean, the comic is 93 issues of black and white ink on a page, vs moving breathing actors. The show has a super unfair advantage, and its still not better in most peoples eyes.

Yea they still call them walkers

I swear, Dave and Tony and company that were in town, that is a prelude to the Governor. Anyone else with me on that? On the other hand, despite how he's dropping into douchiness once more, I still am a big fan of Daryl. As for Shane's 'little white lie' to Lori, well, I think he's finally on his path to finally dying. He just wasn't the same since Rick came back, and he crossed his own Rubicon with what he did to Otis. Confrontation is in order...and I tell you, I have a sinking feeling we will be seeing Carl shoot Shane dead to protect his dad. After all, isn't that kind of what Lori was worried of back in the Nebraska episode? That Carl was becoming detached and "cold"? Something to think about.

@BatClaw89 The series is ten times better than the comic. I am loving every second of the show. I love how they don't call them Zombies but Walkers it makes so much sense.

How can you possibly say that? How much of the comic have you read? While the series has it's high points and is good quality, the comic series is much more interesting. The TV series dwells too much on too little and misses some really cool bits. Also - I swear they call them walkers in the comics as well - they have lots of names for the different types of Zombies like "roamers". I can deal with people saying they prefer the TV series... I guess - but "ten times better" you have got to be joking.

I'd agree with Batclaw, the tv show is better than the comic, but not by that much. The main reason I like the show better than the comic is the reason most like the comic better than the show, pacing. I read the first omnibus of the comic, which was 24 issues, and found it to go much to quickly, making character development weak, I mean the show spent 15 minutes on the opening to the first episode, while the comic wrapped it up in a measly two pages! same with Rick's journey from the hospital, and into the city. yeah the show drags at time, but i'd rather it be too slow than too fast
Are you guys reading the same comic as me? I'v read every issue of it so far and I have to say there is far more development in the comics than there is in the tv show, the show has been missing out huge character defining moments that set the tone and I wouldn't say the book is going to fast, in fact if you read the letters page after each issue ever single one complies that the series is moving to slow.

Anyway, this was a good episode and I noticed a few sick burns throughout, Daryl abuses Carol, Maggie totally snubs her dad by running straight by him to get to Glen and then Hershel laying the verbal smackdown on Shane, actually Hershel was pretty boss in this ep.

for me this was the scariest episode of the series yet.....that walker trying to push it's head through the windshield will haunt me for months

I really don't see the romantic tension between Daryl and Carol...maybe I'm just blind though...maybe if this were the younger Carol of the comics then I could see it...I think it's more that she see's the path that he's going down and he knows it and is trying to avoid her....I also don't thinking he's "slipping into madness"....he's going through a huge character transition and it goes against his complete nature so he's fighting it every step of the way....he had his "in" with the group by searching for Sophia and finding her...except he didn't and she's dead....that's weighing heavy on him....he see's himself as an outsider and thinks that he's a bad person like his brother....Carol knows he's not and is trying to make him see that before it's too late for him....I think this is all going to come to a head when Meryl finally returns and we'll see which side Daryl chooses...his brother or Rick and the group

This episode was epic! When Rick pulled the kid off of the fence, man that was insane!! And it looked like it hurt a lot. Plus, who in the world has those types of fences, those are like the fence pieces that are found at the creepy old people's houses, that is ransacked and looks like trash.

That is fair enough. There are certainly some elements of the comic that were very quickly rushed through. I feel the comic really came into it's element when it reached the prison, as it was a bit more grounded. However, on the flip side, the TV series can dwell on some stuff, that while essential survival stuff, is really boring. - But this why I say that I can understand someone like the TV series more as it does take time on all the details of surviving a Zombie infestation. The TV and the Comic are both expertly done - I just had a slight issue with claims of the TV series being Ten Times better?? Madness.

P.s the Quote button isn't working on this naff Laptop I am borrowing - so sorry about that!

The series is ten times better than the comic. I am loving every second of the show. I love how they don't call them Zombies but Walkers it makes so much sense.

..Why does that make more sense? Realistically everyone knows what a zombie is, if they were in a zombie apocolypse, I think they'd be aware of the fact that they're zombies. They just used the term walker to make things different.
