The Richest Comics Characters

Who made the list of the top 20? And who SHOULD have been on it?

Some rich dudes buy a sports car. Norman Osborn buys this.
Some rich dudes buy a sports car. Norman Osborn buys this.

Just in time for IRON MAN 2’s release this week, Ranker’s put up a list of the 20 Richest Comic Characters of All Time. What don’t you take a look at the list, yourself, before we talk about it?

Ranker's 20 Richest Comic Book Characters (in descending order)

  1. Black Panther Namor
  2. Sub-Mariner
  3. Ozymandias
  4. Batman
  5. Lex Luthor
  6. Magneto
  7. Iron Man
  8. Dr. Doom
  9. Green Goblin
  10. Green Arrow
  11. Prof. X
  12.  Blue Beetle
  13. Iron Fist
  14. Mr. Fantastic
  15. Thor
  16. Hercules
  17. Kingpin
  18. Archangel
  19. Dr. Strange
  20. Daredevil

First off, where are Daddy Warbucks, Richie Rich and Uncle Scrooge?! Sure, Mr. McDuck doesn’t rub elbows with superheroes all that often in Duckburg, but... but... he takes daily swims in a pool of gold coins! I think that’s a little more extravagant than building yourself a goblin glider or buying a steady supply of billy clubs. This whole list reminds me of Forbes’ annual “Fictional Fifteen”, which lists characters like Jed Clampett (from THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES), Thurston Howell III (from GILLIGAN’S ISLAND) and C. Montgomery Burns (from the SIMPSONS) in addition to Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark. They usually take it a step further by estimating each character’s net worth and assessing the shrewdness of their investments.

Seeing this list just reminds me the Albert Goldman quote from the documentary OVERNIGHT.

"No man is really changed by success. What happens is that success works on the man's personality like a truth drug, bringing him out of the closet and revealing...what was always inside his head."

I think you can easily substitute “money” for “success” in a lot of places here, especially for characters like Batman and the Green Goblin. They both used their fortunes to realize their totally outlandish pet fantasies. Some billionaires build shrines to themselves… Bruce Wayne builds cars, tanks and helicopters under a bat theme he’ll use to wage war on crime. Osborn has just as intriguing a psychological profile as Wayne does. While you can talk about how “Batman” is the true identity while “Bruce Wayne” is the mask with validity, what I always found so intriguing about Norman Osborn is that he’s perfectly functional, successful businessman who has manic laughing fits when he’s alone in his office. As soon as he’s done with a board meeting, he hops out the window, dressed as a fairy tale creature. I always found THAT to be the creepiest aspect of the character.

The last thing I’ll say is that this proves that, in real life, superheroes would need a lot of funding and capital to operate.  While KICK-ASS varies in its realism, it does strike home the point that a middle-class kid couldn’t just go out and fight crime. He’d need money for the free time, the weapons and the training, and a network to cover his (pun intended) ass.

Anyway, enough of my rambling. What do you maniacs in the Comic Vine community think of this? Pretend we’re on MAD MONEY and dish about the financials.

Black Panther makes a lot of sense being that everyone and their momma wants to get into his country and take all its natural resources. When demand is high and supply is limited, you can control the price of things. Not to mention the technology they've developed as well... a good number one!!!

not a single lady on the list, eh?
Emma Frost has a sizable fortune and Psylocke and brother Captain Britain come from family wealth. Monet St. Croix has also been stated to have a silver spoon in her mouth and Lilandra commands an entire race (or used to at least) How about Storm commanding half of T'Challa's wealth? Just sayin, at least one over achieving Entrepreneuress should've made it...or is the land of comicdom a man's world too?

Magneto, Professor X ,Green Arrow and Daredevil being rich is news to me. I've never gotten the impression that they were loaded. But maybe they are but certainly not on the same level as Batman, Lex and Tony Stark

Green arrow has had a fortune on and off for decades, Professor X grew up rich, but I agree Magneto and Daredevil aren't very rich, to my knowledge

I tought Green Arrow fortune was off again. They went with Magneto control metal so he could easily own all the precious metal in the world but this idea is kind of dumb and if he try that he would probly be beatten down again and that it.

Daredevil :
It's one of the most lucrative professions in the U.S., and therefore gets him on this list because, unlike a lot of heroes (*cough* Spider-Man *cough*), he's not struggling to pay the bills and is obviously doing well enough to buy his cool gadgets and a ridiculous amount of privately-tailored spandex.

Yeah right so being a lawyer make you richer than someone that swim in gold simply because you are a lawyer.  Dumb list

Yeah, totally. He should be #1. x]

Anyway, most of those characters are good choices but I can't see DD as one of the richest characters in comicdom. Maybe if he was a successful corporate lawyer or something, but most of the people his firm represents are common folk (with some exceptions in the superhero community), and they don't offer a lot of money.

wait wait wait....
someone mentioned Ra's Al Ghul. he should be pretty high on the list.
generally speaking, this list needs A LOT more research. a lot of those picks are based on being business owners or just having good, well-paying, jobs.

Scrooge McDuck is the richest character in comics. period. Richie Rich is number 2.

That would be a cool drawing, a group shot of the comic rich.  Like a magazine spread for Forbes.  I once saw a sort of group shot of comics smartest men, it was a classroom setting.  I think Dr. Doom or Lex Luther was trying to cheat off of Reed Richards.
I'd also be interested to see most skilled hand to hand fighters or best swordsmen too.

I think Thor and Hercules should be taken off, seeing how herc is dead and Thor isn't the king of asgard anymore. (But i think asgards treasury >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Bruce Wayne's fortune.

yeah id put him as number 3.  but that control of all metals thing makes magneto #1 and polaris #2.
#4 would be Madison Jefferies, since his whole power is creating chemicals and materials that are hard to find.  i wonder if some day he could make adamantium??
kingpin should be higher.  so should daredevil seeing as he now has all the riches of The Hand (though that will likely change)
And where are Nick Fury and Viper.  As control of supervillain empires they are pretty rich, especially with all the companies that work for them and all the american money theyve embezzled.

Just in time for IRON MAN 2’s release this week, Ranker’s put up a list of the 20 Richest Comic Characters of All Time. What don’t you take a look at the list, yourself, before we talk about it?

Characters outside of Marvel and DC that should've been here:
Toyo Harada(Harbinger)
Spartan(Wildcats)
Kenneth Irons(Witchblade)
