The Orion, Wonder Woman and Superman Love Triangle

With Orion making an appearance in SUPERMAN #18, will the character cause problems for the Clark and Diana's relationship?

The launch of the New 52 meant new stories, new backgrounds to some popular and timeless characters, and the reintroduction of characters many of us grew up with into this new DC Universe. The result was often interesting (and at times a bit controversial). One of the most interesting re-introductions into the new DCU had to be Orion's. Orion is a classic DC character, and one that will always be regarded as one of comic creator Jack Kirby's greatest creations. He is one of DC's greatest and fiercest warriors, so it made some sense why his first New 52 appearance happened in WONDER WOMAN #12: a series all about warriors, champions and will. The result was what some consider a fantastic dose of entertaining and witty banter shared between two characters, and an interaction that made some of us wonder whether it is these two that should be together and not Superman and Wonder Woman -- and for good reason. Together they are funny, and the tension has been exciting -- a very different sort of relationship than the one we've seen shared between Diana and Clark.

If you have been reading writer Brian Azzarello's WONDER WOMAN you may have noticed that the series has sort of kept to itself, for the most part. While other comics have experienced some cross-over: Nightwing and Batgirl cross over into BATMAN, for example, and the most recent SUPERMAN story arc (H'el On Earth) featured the entire cast of JUSTICE LEAGUE, we haven't seen that in WONDER WOMAN at all. Like anything else, there are advantages and disadvantages of having characters cross over into other series. While it can sometimes lead a series to feel cluttered when you have too many characters in a book, crossover of characters from one book into another does give the feeling that the current story we are reading is happening in the "here and now," so to speak. It gives readers the sense that not only is the story being told happening in the present, but it gives this feeling of a unified continuity: all these characters have shared the same or similar experiences at the same time.

Since the start of her relaunch, Diana (in her own series) hasn't interacted with any of her teammates, at least not in her self-titled series. While she has had plenty of interactions with other characters, most of them are secondary characters to her series and are somehow affiliated with Olympus and the Greek mythology (which is at the very root of her character). And although she and Superman are considered to be romantically linked, Clark has yet to make a first appearance in her series and he likely won't anytime soon, at least according to the series' writer Brian Azzarello. In a recent interview Azzarello revealed that Superman won't be appearing in WONDER WOMAN in the near future, but that Azzarello has every intention of creating a bit of drama between Diana's character and Orion, and so far he seems to have done a pretty good job.

CV: Any plans to bring any other DC characters into this series?

BA: Like who?

CV: Like Superman?

BA: No. Superman's got enough face time in other books so he doesn't need it in this one.

CV: So you don't plan on exploring...

BA: I'll be exploring other relationships. As far as other DC characters, yes, but they happen to be from New Genesis and we're going to expand on what we're doing with Orion at that point.

The decision to focus more on Orion and his relationship with Wonder Woman is an interesting one, and although Superman won't be making an appearance in WONDER WOMAN, both Orion and Diana will be appearing in issue #18 of SUPERMAN. While the solicit for the upcoming issue doesn't really make any mention of Orion's appearance, he is certainly all over the previews: slaying dragons and riding his A4. It does, however, seem strange that Azzarello has no real plans for Superman's appearing in his series, doesn't it? In fact, it doesn't seem to bode very well for their relationship, does it? If this relationship was something that was really going to stick, then wouldn't there be some plans in place for some crossover at this point?

No Caption Provided

I, for one, would love to see Orion and Diana together, at least for a little while. The two come from similar backgrounds: both have a familiarity with omnipotent relatives, both are considered "Gods." More importantly though, there seems to be a very interesting dynamic between these two characters. Orion says things and acts in a way that gets under her skin, and it will be interesting to see this dynamic explored. Meanwhile, Superman's relationship with her is a bit different: the two connect because they have super powers and are members on the same team, but that seems to be where their similarities end. What do you think? Do you think Orion and Wonder Woman would make an interesting couple? Are you looking forward to Orion's appearance in SUPERMAN #

I prefer the Superman and Wonder Woman relationship, not that I have anything against Orion, he's a cool character, but Clark goes better with Diana.

BTW 'same team' and 'similar powers' are NOT where their similarities end. 1. Neither of them wear masks 2. Their mannerisms are equally refined 3. They're both outsiders ... which brings them together (Andy Diggle acknowledged that in an interview some months ago) 4. They both have an equally compassionate view of humanity.

Wonder Woman and Orion is a far better combination in the New 52 than Sups and Diana.I mean Azzarello so far has been doing a great job and they look perfect for each other while Clark and Diana's relationship was brought up in a really stupid way.

Sigh.

If WW goes for Orion,.. we'll have the Stereotype I NEVER expected out of wonderwoman.

The one where a good woman will "just be friends" with a good man, (Steve Trevor), Be luke-warm with a great man, (Clark Kent), but will love the dirty drawls of a bad man who treats her like crap.

WTH????

I HOPE they don't go there,.. WW is supposed to be more than "meat".

I know, right? I don't care if he is a God or he thinks he's the bees knees, it's a garbage message and WW is not some slab of meat. It's kind of amusing and ironic the strong feminist character and some readers would love obvious sexism and push for Orion to be rewarded by nabbing Diana cause it is entertaining to them. I think back to the reboot of the new 52 and the soap boxing across the net over two adults having consensual sex (Catwoman) but here we have obvious sexual innuendo, inappropriate touching , rudeness but oooh ship it!

And now there is a foreshadowing of her as some object to be fought over between Superman and Orion in some "triangle". Triangles on the whole are lame but is that how we really want Diana in this scenario? Way to make her even more of a joke after the slap. I hope this is all just a red herring to create discussion by DC and Diana will show that strong women who have confidence and self esteem don't fall for jerks.

@birthright: I agree. If people wants Lois and Superman stories so much read the multiple decades worth of them of the two. Wonder Woman is way more interesting and they haven't even scratched the surface of the stories they could tell with Supes and WW.

First article I've read on the new CV. As a big Superman and Wonder Woman fan, I absolutely hate the fact they're in a relationship in the New 52. It's poorly written, the characters have little in common and there's no chemistry in the relationship. It's just one big publicity stunt/plot device for the upcoming Trinity War that appeals to all the shippers of Superman and Wonder Woman. It doesn't even come close to the way Waid wrote them in a relationship. Now Azzarello has done an excellent job on Orion so far and the tense relationship he shares with Wonder Woman makes for a more compelling read than Superman and Wonder Woman. There's chemistry and a spark between Orion and Wonder that is more exciting than the boring relationship between Clark and Diana. With Lobdell bringing Wonder Woman and Orion in, I fear he'll mess up Azarello's good work.

I will hope Lobdell can do something with Orion because his dialogue is atrocious and he is written like a college frat boy. Legs? Want to jump me? Make me? I slapped your ass for dna? Wow, that's Eisner winning gold, isn't it? Orion is an off world alien character who is torn between suppressing his warring evil nature and what Highfather tried to instill in him. The guy has nothing in common with WW than strength. Hell WW can't even seem to do much in her own book these days.

New Gods have always been tied into SUPERMAN long before WW. Wonder Woman has no monopoly on New Gods.

If you think Lobdell can do any better, then Orion really is screwed. Lobdell is a horrible writer so far and has done a terrible job on Teen Titans, RHATO and Superman. Even if you don't like Azarello's run, he seems like Eisner quality compared to Lobdell. I hope you don't like Lobdell because if you do, then you kind of have bad taste I'm afraid. He's not going to do anything good with Wonder Woman and Orion but mess them up so much you'll wish Azzarello had written the issue. I know New Gods have been tied more to Superman but honestly I like how they've been brought in by Azzarello. Makes a difference from them being always related to Superman first.

If Wonder Woman and Orion became an couple, it would be a reason for me to drop the title.

It's so wrong on multiple levels, and would tear down everything WW stands for. Feminism, equality and an icon of independence from men.

Would she then end up with a sexist male chauvinist pig, with a douchebag manor of slapping women on there ass and talking down to her? No, freaking way, as said, it would go against every bit of her character traits and would loose her position as the strongest female hero.

If she would end up with Orion, that would be the same thing as if Belle in Disney "The beauty and the beast" would chose the "man-bimbo" Gaston over the cursed Prince (the beast). Will not happen. I'm more of waiting to see when she gets feed up with him and kicks his ass.

Superman and Wonder Woman pairing is boring and there's a lack of chemistry, and I don't think they add something to each other (after 5 years outside Themyscira Superman will show how normal people live, really?). Orion and Wonder Woman can work better, they have more similarities than superwonder. Azzarello still have to show a lot about him, to really give my verdict

After Superman kicks Orion's butt... we can call WW "Super Slut".

(And when did Orion's face get all pretty?)

Kirby made him look a lot like his father.

Really bad idea that I am certain that "The New 52" will run with.

Just like they have with so many other bad ideas

Thus... I do not buy DC comics... and Marvel ain't doing much better.

From a man that has loved comics for over 40 years, and can pay for them... I feel left behind.

Younger people with clipboard size phone/computers are stupid enough to buy this crap so that "old farts" like me can pay for it.

I worked my ass off at home to buy my bundle of comics back in the '60s.

And, I feel that both of the major comic companies have abandoned the people that carried them for DECADES!

Have a nice lunch. I will not be eating this crap.

I would love Orion+WW...I agree completely w/ the conclusion of this article, Supes and WW have 2 things in common: they are both outsiders and they both have superpowers. That's not a good foundation for a relationship, as once they get to know each other they are totally different (Supes is, in the end, a bit of a pacifist...Diana is a total war hawk). I would love to see Orion get w/ her, Supes kick his ass and then refuse to take Diana back. Go supes!

Diana and Kal I think are a good match,as someone said they have alot more in common(and always have) than just being on the same team and their powers. The majority of us and most of the "non fanboy" public would put them together anyway..it just makes sense.having said that I think that she would be a good match for Orion..but they seem like too much like the same character,it would be like Diana dating Diana. But since alot of people do not like her with Kal,how about putting her with a totally new person.I hate ..HATE her with Batman, that is an idea that makes no sense at all to me.There is nothing interesting about it.She is royality and he is from wealth.she is a Goddess and he human. Both have anger issues, its not interesting nor is it visually stimulating(after all this is a comic and vissually it would have to work as well).

Diana's cute, but Bekka is sex on legs. No contest she's the one he's meant to be with!

I've been behind on Diana's series as of late, but The article makes a decent argument that Clark & Diana's relationship hasn't been tested in any significant way since it started. Perhaps that's the whole point of adding Orion to the mix. Now SM & WW might have to take a beat and really consider what they feel about each other (And of course, conclude that they love each other more than ever!!!)

Or break up and end a ridiculously dull, lackluster relationship which demeans both characters and is a mere plot device to cause tension in the League when they inevitably break up during the Trinity War. That would be so much better.

With Superman they could have used a lesser known female superhero as his pre-Lois love interest. Maybe Vixen, or Black Canary or my pick Isis. In fact they could do what they did in Smallville and make Lois Isis.

Also Azz's Orion is kind of lame. Orion is supposed to be a man torn by his nature and nurture dichotomy. He has a rage that the motherbox masks and tames. The guy in the Wonder Woman book is just a Hal Jordan wannabe.

Can't say I agree with that. It's a departure from how Orion is usually handled, sure, but he's hardly Hal Jordon. Look at how he is with Milan; he sympathises with Milan's powers and that they cause him pain to use, but at the same time knows that he needs Milan's help so tries to get him to use them for him. With Lennox he reacts quickly with anger and constantly, and usually verbally, has to calm himself down. And then with Diana it's like he's trying to offend her, which is odd, but it almost feels like he;s trying to hard with her and has no idea how to speak to her.

I see quite a layered take on his character here, and I'm looking forward to seeing more.

Okay, this is my first post ever so be kind...

What's all this nonsense I hear about Clark and Diana being in love? Yes, they're in a relationship but I'm fairly certain that a couple of dinner dates and more than likely super sex (am I allowed to say that?) do not qualify as "love". And for people saying Diana can't date Orion because he's a pig, well then what's character development for? Anyone ever hear of "Beauty and the Beast"? If Azzarello takes the time to develop him and show him grow from obnoxious pig to serious competition for Superman in terms of romance, would you be on board then or is he just an unlikable character? I guess what I'm saying is I wouldn't mind seeing Orion and Diana together but not so soon. Not during this relationship (sends wrong message) nor immediately after the inevitable(?) break-up. It would feel like they were pimping her out or something (DC: "Hey guys, remember all those years Wonder Woman never had a boyfriend? Let's make up for all that. Like NOW")

Call Wonder Woman "super slut" What?! Better stop. Orion uses a mother box to help control his anger.

Sometimes is good some changes, but I kind of understand you. DC comics always forget long time fans.

@akindoodle:

Good first post haha. I think a good character development can be very interesting to the relationship romantic or not between Orion and WW. Both have god powers that can be out of control, Orion has the motherbox and Diana the bracelets to help control it. the relationship is beyond superhero things, goes deeper in origins, family, self-control.

I agree that orion should stick with bekka who is way sexier than wonder woman. Also superman should be with Lois and no one else. As for Wonder Woman she should be with Batman. She is the only woman that he can truly be happy with since she knows he is Bruce, and she can handle herself if ever attacked by one of his enemies.

@veronicacris:

Thank you

Indeed, they have quite compatible if not similar backgrounds in that respect. And when it comes to family, I really can't see Lennox or Ares reacting too well to Clark, but we've seen their reaction to Orion (granted, they don't like him very much but he's the "DOG OF WAR" and we've got a WW2 veteran and the "GOD OF WAR", they'll get used to him). But Clark, I can actually see this new 52 Hippolyta chasing him off the island for being too blue. The sole purpose of their relationship is to create team tension. I can't really see anyone except Batman disapproving of it so it so that doesn't work. But if they found out "Hey, look! Wonder Woman's dating the son of that guy that almost killed us all 5 years ago! How do we react to that?!". Now there's tension... actually, too much. It might be one they want to save for a HUGE story. Something bigger than Trinity War. We're probably talking Final Crisis level for that.

Conditioned by the JL cartoon so I would have yelled "HELL YEAH!" to the Batman/WW for old continuity but not New 52. He's way too mistrustful and old for her now - there's like a 10 year difference... Still looking @ you Steve Trevor

@veronicacris:

That's a hell of an idea. I fully support this!

OH YEAH!!!!

He was only taking her DNA. You guys are taking too personally. He also comes from a different dimension. I'm sure touching someone's butt on his planet isn't sexualized.
