The Obama "Joker" Poster

The "Joker" gets political

It is not very often that I have the opportunity to get political in one of my blogs, but after having seen what I saw today, I felt it was appropriate. Let me start off by saying that I am not here to preach my politics to you, even though you would all do well to agree with my political perspective (that was a joke); but I did feel very strongly about the subject I will be discussing which is why I will not refrain from voicing my political opinion. Additionally, I hope that in this case you voice your opinion on the subject matter as well, even if it does not concur with mine.

Living in the United States and being born in another country, you learn to value the importance of your "inalienable rights." The right to vote, the freedom to choose who you want to marry, and what (if any) church you want to go to are all rights that we have as Americans; rights which many people all over the world do not have the privilege to exercise. Of all the rights we have been endowed with by our political system, maintaining the freedom to speak what we think is one of our greatest blessings.  For the most part, our voices are not restricted, and the idea is that if we are not hurting anyone, we can virtually say what we think, feel and believe. That right to speak freely is a choice and I feel at times that there are people that, for the sake of being seemingly controversial, speak their minds too freely. Remember "sticks and stones," and all that?

It seems that ever since President Obama a his recent cameo appearance in the issue of Amazing Spider-Man #583, we have seen the President all over comic books. He appeared in the Marvel issue as himself, as well as in Devil's Due's alternate interpretation of the President; "Barack The Barbarian."  While the majority of these titles really seem to be done in good humor, the most recent interpretation of Obama has not.

No Caption Provided

The image of Barack Obama's face manipulated to look like Heath Ledger's Joker above a "Socialism" caption looks more like a nasty joke and political statement and less like good wholesome fun. I am not surprised at the statement, considering Obama's recent health care conversation. However, were we living in a Socialist political system, there's a good chance that this particular picture would not have hit main stream.

This is a prime example of the way in which an image can speak volumes. Take the characterization of the Joker in The Dark Knight film. He is a mass murderer, insane, psychotic; I could go on. There is no doubt in my mind that Heath Ledger's interpretation of the Joker was phenomenal. Ledger's interpretation of the character captured all the attributes of the "Joker" that make him seem so scary. That is why by taking that image of the Joker's character and associating it with our current President is such a heavy statement. What is this individual trying to say? That Obama is psychotic? That he is a mass murderer? Not only is the image associating the Joker's character attributes to our current President; it is also putting the issue of a socialist political system in a negative light.

This is when I will open the floor and ask you what you guys think. How does the image make you feel? What are your thoughts on the political and characteristic interpretation and association that this image relays?

Personally, I think the picture is funny and accurate. Not to compare "Joker and Obama" but just because he's a joker. Besides, I didn't see any CV articles when they compared Bush to Hitler....double standard much?

I also don't see this as "racist" but of course always some lamer to use the "race" card, liberals lol. Because Obama was the only President ever photoshopped right?

Okay, I skipped from page 6 to page 12, so if I repeat anyone, sorry.  I think the person who did this poster ("artist" seems a little too gracious) was just trying to say Obama's a villain, without really thinking about the implications of Ledger's Joker.  I don't think it's necessary to depict him as the Joker though - why pick on a comic book villain that way?

I don't see Obama as the Joker, but I suspect the Bible may have meant "the Obamanation that causes desolation."  Obama's policies have completely divided this country - it doesn't seem that anybody is in the middle about this presidency.  They either love him or hate him.  I think just that division is damaging to the country, but his "helps" haven't really helped.

The help for homeowners thing was a temporary help to homeowners, but most used it as a way to keep their houses a little longer before foreclosure, knowing they weren't going to be able to pay even at whatever lower rate and payment they might get.  What it really did was make lenders suddenly raise the bar for loan qualifications.  I know this, because I was refinancing my house that week.  That which was a great credit score when I started was suddenly not good enough when the bill was enacted, and I was forced to lock in a point higher than we were aiming for, or not qualify at all.

The credit card thing that was enacted simply caused credit companies to drop many of their cardholders, or lower their limits to such extremes that there was no point in having the card.  I personally experienced that one too.

The healthcare initiative is doing the same thing.  Where the upfront costs may be lowered by the initiative, insurance carriers will raise their rates and/or raise their standards for qualification.

Obama is not helping the American public.  He's pleasing them.  He's attacking the problem that everyone is complaining about, without attacking the roots that feed the problem.  This is not the mark of a good leader.  A good politician maybe.  A good leader would attack the roots in order to stymie the growth of the problem.  I hope that we see past skin color and gender this next election, and that the person running against him is not an idiot like Dukakis or Kerry.  On the heels of Obama, we need serious surgery - not kisses and a band-aid.

I'm going to throw another little thing in the mix. i live in Sweden which is a socialist country I guess you could call it, and it's pretty damn good. Free healthcare and low poverty rates? Damn it sucks so bad that I have to pay more taxes to make sure my fellow man feels good!

Nice point Socialism is a spit in the face of the foundation of an American society. Yes we have some current socialistic policies and they generally hurt our economy and our free enterprise.

heh. hey buddies, this is Fidel. Iloves you all. I love comic books and loves comicvine....

but i am here to see this for himself. now , I am not here to talk about which form of government i think is right, or anything like that. I am retired. I am here to say some things about this picture of your President in the states. First thing alot of you might not know is where this picture came from. This picture came from one of my very own Cubans, an online blogger. Thats right. He is a "political satirist". He does this of many public figures, including yours truly, which makes Fidel very sad indeed. I dont understand why this picture has become so popular in America? It is everywhere. Is it that its somewhat taboo and tempting?
Is it that people love the Batman movies ( as Fidel does) that this is like a form of  paraphernalia?
And ask yourself this...why is a Cuban artist, concerned whether the American president is socialist?
That makes me laugh. I wonder if it would make him laugh to know this has actually helped Baracks popularity and image, eh? I have one thing to say to this man....

How is Barack Obama, a moderate Democrat who just sold out to the drug companies on the price negotiation issue, the "polar opposite of capitalism"?  Or do you get all your ideas about government directly from Rush Limbaugh?

Obama is tearing apart our society and putting the government in control and leaving us defenseless.

The government has always been in control, junior.  That's why we're the United States of America and not an every-man-for-himself hellhole like Somalia.  Or are you so deluded that you object to the very idea of government?  How thoroughly un-American.  Sounds like the Confederacy would have been more your style.

And if six months of Obama is really "tearing apart our society", than America is even more weak and lily-livered than I expected.  Two hundred years of history all flushed down the toilet because somebody actually dared to suggest that healthcare should be free and open to all?  Wow.  A country that feeble doesn't deserve to exist.

Don't be so black and white when it comes to the real joker and obama they has a key interest and thats to disrupt the order of things.

Is that how you see it?  Obama and his crazy gang of psychos disrupting the great capitalist utopia of the USA with their healthcare and their government spending on non-military programs?  You really see Obama as nothing more than a random force for chaos?

Thank you for this enlightening glimpse into the slap-happy fairyland of the modern American right.  No wonder you guys are on the ropes right now.

I think that whoever made that has the right to do so and I would stand up for them and their right to produce something which I find at least a little offensive. Also I think a lot of Americans need to learn to differentiate between socialism and communism, and also between communist ideals and their association with totalitarian states. Socialism is good thing in short it means those who have the most helping those who need the most

put far better than i could have. well said.
as Winston Churchill said about socialism ". . . a socialist policy is abhorrent to the British ideas of freedom. Socialism is inseparably interwoven with totalitarianism and the object worship of the state. It will prescribe for every one where they are to work, what they are to work at, where they may go and what they may say. Socialism is an attack on the right to breathe freely. No socialist system can be established without a political police. They would have to fall back on some form of Gestapo, no doubt very humanely directed in the first instance."

socialism is great less you need to go to the bathroom http://in.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idINTRE5792F420090810 like in cuba their running low on toilet paper.its great less you have a difrent political view http://www.globalissues.org/news/2009/08/03/2390 points out human rights groups "'The government is becoming more intolerant towards ideas and opinions that it opposes,' Carlos Lauría, senior program coordinator for the Americas at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) told IPS. "

looks more like socialism will control what comes out of your mouth but wount give ya someithing to wipe your but with.human rights an socialism does not walk hand in hand.

Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld destroyed an entire country, causing many innocents (millions) to lose their lives for these criminals own greedy, world-dominating agenda. Destroying our economy and our reputation around the world in the process.

President Obama (yes he IS the President..not just "Obama")  has the very difficult task of trying to fix all of the problems these evil nazi-wannabes have caused...we should all get behind him and help save this wonderful country of ours....instead people simply attack him still and dislike him because he's non-white....that's the epitome of being un-American....for shame.....its 2009...we can cheer for big green guys, and furry blue guys with 3 fingers and toes and yet we still have issues with other human beings because they have differing pigments altered over time to adapt to varying degrees of sunlight?

I'm not really a supporter of Obama, but this just makes no sense. The dude's not the Joker. It seems like whoever made this just looked at too many demotivational posters (which are pretty funny) and thought that they were making a genuine political statement by photoshopping a picture and slapping an insult they saw flung around more than a few times on Fox news. The Joker has absolutely nothing to do with socialism. He's the kind of guy who laughs at all of the little men in monkey suits running around thinking that the latest poll is going to matter in the grand scheme of things, or the flawed logic that upholding the law means you can break it every once and a while because your wife's hair is starting to grey (you know what I mean).

The Joke is that the numbskull who made this thinks themselves clever because they made it on the news. So now we have one of those situations that occur in comics where the villain only gets stronger the more you hit it. We all want to have our say, and we certainly deserve our turn, but that only leads to what the creator of the picture wants: attention (but I guess I'm being a bit hypocritical here, seeing as I’m throwing in my two cents as well.  Just wanted to throw that out there before someone else does). On a side note, does anyone remember how the hero usually defeats the villain in this sort of situation? Because I always forget.

One of the other things I keep seeing in these comments is the discussion of socialism. Is it wrong? Is it right? I think Winston Churchill said it best:

"Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the other ones that have been tried."

My opinion about Socialism and Anarchy in particular (which is something I always find interesting to think about) is that they all sound good on paper, but there will always be some idiot to screw it up.

Take Anarchy for example: Now, everybody just living by themselves and governing their own lives sounds great, right? But any fool can see that someone is going to try and take advantage of it.  when they do, you as an individual in the world, not a nation or republic, have to make a decision: Are you going to sit back and try not to disrupt the status quo as they revert back to the old ways, or are you going to stand up and fight this threat against your way of life?

Either way, you lose. You go for the first option; you're now under a totalitarian rule. If you jail or kill this bastard, you're imposing your will on this individual, so now you're effectively the dictator they would have become. You either die the hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain, ironically tying this all back to the Dark Knight. It's not a slippery slope; it's one that is too dangerously easy to climb.

The same goes for socialism. Everything starts out fine, as long as everybody is willing to contribute to a veritable utopia. But many, being the people who are having their resources being taken away and others who feel that isn't completely fair, will not cooperate. Best case scenario, they stay relatively quiet about it, perhaps write a few papers that never get read, but worst case scenario would see civil uprisings and a class war. So you, as the leader of this nation are presented with a similar decision as you would in the situation above in a world without rule: the only way to maintain order is to silence the "rabble rousers". But then you've gone past socialism and moved on to fascism. Just read Animal Farm to understand how easily things can slip away.

So Democracy isn't perfect, but it's the only thing we've got. The one thing I find most important about Churchill’s quote, however, is one that I had always heard left out. The final four words are the most powerful. Democracy is the worst from of government, except for all the other ones that have been tried. To me, this provides hope that someday we'll find a way to make all of it fit together that nobody's ever thought of. How or when are unknown, but if anybody can find it, it's our flawed, but nonetheless innovative, race.

I don't shrug off anything.  I love political stuff myself.  I go to blog site's like Hot Air, Little Green Footballs and Townhall for my daily fix.  I don't go to web sites like Comic Vine for that.  I go for comic book stuff.

um far as opions go if ya notice them colored letters with the funny swiggles behind them .those are links to sites to back up what i posted .now since your more conserned with perfect spelling than providing a link to vet poll why yes acording to this link http://www.va.gov/budget/perfplan/quality.htm theirs 90% sataisfaction with National Cemeteries the va runs. .its a old poll 2001 but for health care an services http://www.va.gov/budget/perfplan/healthcare.htm says 68 percent the percentage of patients rating VA health care service as very good or excellent. i cant find a newer one but at least tried to see both sides an even find prof of what your saying.people were about 70% satisfied with Compensation and Pension Claimants .

i did find a nifty article on mold growing in a va hospital tho an they didnt clean it up right http://www.herald-mail.com/?module=displaystory&story_id=183186&format=html   . an this one http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/24/obama-pushes-national-health-care-americans-happy-coverage/ "A survey conducted jointly by the Kaiser Family Foundation, ABC News and USA Today, released in October 2006, found that 89 percent of Americans were satisfied with their own personal medical care, but only 44 percent were satisfied with the overall quality of the American medical system.  " funny huh. is 89% a vast majority?

oh the high school crack wasnt at you .guy in the pic were all talkn about went to private high school on a scholor ship as said here http://www.foxnews.com/politics/elections/2008/02/26/hawaii-senator-apologizes-for-suggesting-obamas-high-school-was-elitist/ BUT the funy thing with that fancy word ya used ...hypocrisy ,why he didnt want school vouchers for poor kids in washington http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/03/11/martin.vouchers/index.html.

good to know ya went to high school an dont have to struggle with the writen word as me.wouldnt wish that on ya eiteher. by the way it is moan not "moen" . no ones perfect even those who dont care for others opions .

If you can't even spell or articulate your argument I don't care what you have to say.  I went to public school yet I don't have this problem.  You talk about people treating opinions as facts and that is exactly what you're doing.  So why should I even bother to read what you have to say? Btw, it's Racist not racest.      I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the VA, still doesn't change the fact that when the patients are polled the vast majority are very satisfied.  Yet again, you're taking your own opinions and presenting them as fact.  This is exactly why I can't take your side seriously.  Hypocrisy does not make good politics.

http://www.tribbleagency.com/?p=5035  which may have been a good idea doesnt get people to come buy a car.  course if they spent 130 billion buying new cars an just randomly givieng them away wold have probly been better use of funds.

The 2 billion for cash for Clunkers is being reallocated from the stimulus package.  The program worked much better than anyone thought, so why not allocate more fund towards it?  The car companies are now looking at hiring because there inventories are getting low.  The new cars purchased with this program get on average 9 miles per gallon more than the cars that were trader in.   Its not that the government didn't run the program well, its that it was too successful.  The point was to give people incentives to buy new cars, and thats exactly what people went out and did.  How is that a failure?

Its pretty clear your from the other camp when it comes to health care, so I'm just going to ask you one question.  With our current healthcare system costing twice as much as other countries and still leaving countless people without access to healthcare, How is that a successful system?

It comes down to this, on one side you have the health insurance companies who are raking in record profits every year while providing the minimum service, on the otherside you have the patients.  How the hell can anyone side with the Insurance companies?  The argument that they don't want government deciding what healthcare they receive is retarded because it's not the purpose of the bill.  If government run healthcare was so bad for the patients then why does the VA plan have the highest costumer satisfaction?  Why does it have the lowest administrative costs?  Flat out the people that oppose healthcare reform are often time funded by Insurance companies, so how can they really be serving the best interest of there people?

All I've heard opponents of reform do is piss and moen about it while not purposing an alternative , well a few did but they are being ignored by the rest of there party for some reason.    The other strategy they use is straight out lies and scare tactics, and most people stupidly buy into it.  For example the "governent heathcare is a plot to kill the elderly", they take something from the bill about living wills and twist it into that to scare people.  The best part of that example is that the living wills thing was put into the bill by republicans.     Don't even get me started on the town hall nonsense.

There isn't anything wrong with the picture. Its dumb, but not offensive. I really don't get why everyone is so scared of socialized health care. Currently doctors aren't much different from drug dealers, except they go to school for 8 years. The current system has its flaws, would we expect a govt run health care program to be flawless? Socialism is the big spook word of the year. There are plenty of social services we depend on everyday, like Police, Fire fighters, libraries, Department of public works, etc.

If you watch FOX news, they often say, "They are trying to turn us into Sweden"  or "We don't need a European model of socialist health care."
This is the same mentality many people had 30 years ago when America decided not to convert to the metric system. The reasoning at the time was "We're not going to let France tell us what to do." So now we're one of only three countries in the entire world that use the.... um...... I have no idea what its called, the American Weights and Measures system.... um.... whatever, the "non-metric" system.

A more effective technique would have been to simply photoshop Obama to look like Guevara on a t-shirt. Then you could make money selling the t-shirts, which is very anti-socialism, and you could take a dig at people who wear Che Guevara shirts, people who support Obama, and yourself, all at the same time.

I thought I would share what the site has to say, I'm not going to respond to a bunch of people, and I've stayed mostly out of this, but since it's still going and people are still missing the point, I felt I should
convey what those selling the poster intended.

The Joker has been laughing his way through his first year in office. From throwing around trillions like confetti to making a mockery of America's police officers, Obama has shown that he doesn't take things too seriously.

America was built with the values of individual liberty, self-reliance, and personal responsibility. The US Economy is one of the greatest in the world thanks in part to the principles of capitalism upon which it was founded. President Obama seems intent on redefining America's economy. In just a few short months he has forced the government into industries like finance and automobiles. While most of these actions have been largely ignored by the public, his next target is affects everyone. Obama is trying to force socialized health care on all Americans. If he succeeds it will mean the end of the private health care industry, lower quality care, and higher prices for all. This is the closest the US has ever been to becoming a socialist economy and we are not even 1/4th of the way through the current presidential term.
Socialism is no joke.

While most of President Obama's attempts at forcing the government into private industry have been ignored by the public, his health care plans affect everyone. Americans across the country are realizing that the government is about to get involved in their lives in a very personal way. At meetings with their representatives, concerned citizens are expressing their outrage with the government's intervention into their lives. Some citizens, not convinced that their message is being heard, are taking their frustration to the streets. The Obama Joker poster has popped up in quite a few places over the past few months and has finally reached a point where the media can ignore it no more."  -Taken from their website
