The Obama "Joker" Poster

The "Joker" gets political

It is not very often that I have the opportunity to get political in one of my blogs, but after having seen what I saw today, I felt it was appropriate. Let me start off by saying that I am not here to preach my politics to you, even though you would all do well to agree with my political perspective (that was a joke); but I did feel very strongly about the subject I will be discussing which is why I will not refrain from voicing my political opinion. Additionally, I hope that in this case you voice your opinion on the subject matter as well, even if it does not concur with mine.

Living in the United States and being born in another country, you learn to value the importance of your "inalienable rights." The right to vote, the freedom to choose who you want to marry, and what (if any) church you want to go to are all rights that we have as Americans; rights which many people all over the world do not have the privilege to exercise. Of all the rights we have been endowed with by our political system, maintaining the freedom to speak what we think is one of our greatest blessings.  For the most part, our voices are not restricted, and the idea is that if we are not hurting anyone, we can virtually say what we think, feel and believe. That right to speak freely is a choice and I feel at times that there are people that, for the sake of being seemingly controversial, speak their minds too freely. Remember "sticks and stones," and all that?

It seems that ever since President Obama a his recent cameo appearance in the issue of Amazing Spider-Man #583, we have seen the President all over comic books. He appeared in the Marvel issue as himself, as well as in Devil's Due's alternate interpretation of the President; "Barack The Barbarian."  While the majority of these titles really seem to be done in good humor, the most recent interpretation of Obama has not.

No Caption Provided

The image of Barack Obama's face manipulated to look like Heath Ledger's Joker above a "Socialism" caption looks more like a nasty joke and political statement and less like good wholesome fun. I am not surprised at the statement, considering Obama's recent health care conversation. However, were we living in a Socialist political system, there's a good chance that this particular picture would not have hit main stream.

This is a prime example of the way in which an image can speak volumes. Take the characterization of the Joker in The Dark Knight film. He is a mass murderer, insane, psychotic; I could go on. There is no doubt in my mind that Heath Ledger's interpretation of the Joker was phenomenal. Ledger's interpretation of the character captured all the attributes of the "Joker" that make him seem so scary. That is why by taking that image of the Joker's character and associating it with our current President is such a heavy statement. What is this individual trying to say? That Obama is psychotic? That he is a mass murderer? Not only is the image associating the Joker's character attributes to our current President; it is also putting the issue of a socialist political system in a negative light.

This is when I will open the floor and ask you what you guys think. How does the image make you feel? What are your thoughts on the political and characteristic interpretation and association that this image relays?

Pretty small of a story to end up on the front page.

Two-face would've fit better.

No the poster doesn't bother me but jackass comments like this one does.  The whole Socialism nonsense along with with these idiotic birthers do bother me.  It's a free country and we are allowed to say whatever we want even if its inane babel but when paranoid delusions get air time, repeated for political purposes by people in power, things get real chilly around here.  The other thing about the poster that is a little inappropriate is does remind me of the old black face comedians. "
Do people really think someone is going to be able to turn the US into a socialist country in a 4 year term? Honestly, do people? Obama being president is not the end of the world. We had Bush for 8 years and we're still alive. Everyone calm down. Go to a movie with friends. Drink lemonade in the park. Play with a puppy. Cheer up. You're going to be alright. No one is trying to take away your freedoms. Quit being so paranoid. Enjoy yourself now...because before you know it we'll be under the control of ZOMBIE STALIN! AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!! "
@Tmul501: I'm not paranoid, and I ain't no Jackass who makes Jackass comments. I'm just being real. People take things for granted way to much these days.. And they think everythings going to be ok, but who knows how much dealing with the devil goes on inbetween our government and the corruption within it. Your a person, you know what it's like pleasing that dark side of your soul. Sometimes people would do almost anything for it. "
Well then, let me propose it in this fashion. What, exactly, are you going to do about it? I have so many friends who talk about all the dark and corrupt things going on in the government and how  We take everything for granted and there are dark forces lurking in the shadows. This sounds like the plot to a bad movie. If there is, indeed, all these back ally deals going on then BOTH of our country's political parties are doing it. The reason I make comments like I did is because: (1) we're on a comic book forum. We read books abotu superheroes for fun and for an escape from the mundane of the real world, (2) i'm 24, and I would still like to believe there is a shread of decency in the world. if this is unrealistic, I don't care, it seems much better than the alternative, (3) I do occasionally 'please the darkside of my soul", i just had a milkshake. The reason i'm giving your comment a little bit of crap is because it's just silly. You have absolutely no real evidence that we're going to magically turn into a socialist nation. You are, in fact, being the opposite of real. All i'm saying is, chill out a little bit. Of course politicans are corrupt, BOTH SIDES are corrupt. It sucks, but it's the truth. "

@Tmul501:

I believe there is alot of decency in this world, but I'm just saying the ones that are incharge shouldn't be a Bag of Corrupt retards. Because if they are running things they have more authority. Which means with that authority they need to give themselves higher standards. No I don't think Obama will be able to turn our nation into a Socialist nation that fast, but then when the next guy comes (cough cough hopefully not Obama) He's gonna have a heap of Crap to clean up. And it's gonna be like cleaning it up with his hands so bad that the president won't even give a crap.. Haha  But I'm sorry for being a such negative nelly in those other posts I just am kind of tired of what direction Obamas taking us. But also how do you Know that our nation may not lean to Socialists side just a bit????

And please don't tell me that I'm being the opposite of real I try to be really nice to people about things, but if they come right at me telling me something I'm not that I just said I was trying to be. It kind of bothers me(alot)..   I'm going to reveal some of my personal information, but I think that the laws to abaid by are those commanded by God. And this is partly why it bothers me that we will have limitations to our free will God has given us all... And then again this is a comic book site which I like comic books, and the movies but it does matter if I post this serious stuff on here because it's a free country. And usually I don't write serious things like this on here. I just feel that since it has to do with the real world it's up for whatever people want to write about thier political values

" I don't see Obama as the Joker or any other character I see him for what he does, and what he has done has not made a very pretty image in my mind of  him.. I won't try to cus or anything, but this is what happens when people are blinded by the glamour of things. A Black President (the First Black president) has made a statement in the minds of many. Obama should be called the Guilded President because many people approve of him because he looks good on the outside, but his inside has been recently shown too(and its not anything like we see). And now that we truly know what his real plans are. We can either step back and let him turn this nation into a Socialist country, or we can stand now and stop this so that we may still live in a Free Nation.              It's up to US "
Just what would his "real" plans be? "
@Fluke-buddha: I don't know what the extent of his plans are, but I know that he wants to turn our nation into Socialist country. That says quite a bit already. "
Exactly you DON"T know. If your going to go to the extent to bash someone for there political views you should at least have the common decency to KNOW WHAT THEY ARE!  If you're going to disagree with Obama, fine.  Its your right to do so, but to disagree with him and not even know why?  You really have to question the motives behind your dislike of him.   Its people like you that make flat out lying about facts a successful political strategy.   As far as him turning us into a socialist society, I think not.  Wanting to make sure everyone has access to heathcare isn't socialism, its just doing what is right.  Making sure parents are able to get treatment for there children instead of being turned away is not socialism.  Making sure you are not dropped from your insurance if you get cancer is not socialism.  Making sure you do not go bankrupt from medical bills is not socialism.  You say we are a "Free nation",  guess what we're not.  We're a capitalist nation.    For any of you that are so against anything resembling socialism, ask yourself what the Police and Firefighters are?  Thats right socialist programs.  So if your so against socialism you must want the Police and Firefighters to be services you pay for out of your own pocket then, right?  "911, whats your emergency and will that be cash of charge."   Bottom line, there are basic human rights that we should have but are being fought against be government officials that depend on money from the health insurance companies to run their election campaigns. "

@Fluke-buddha:

Yes it is true I have lied before..Well I think everyone should be able to have health care. But in government controlled health care it means they can pick whom ever they want to treat. Instead of giving out equal care to everyone.

Just how exact is Obama infringing on anyones free will?  A huge part of the backlash against him is driven by the 'corrupt retards' you claim to oppose.  Just to clarify, its not what you're saying that is bothering me, but what you're not.  I'd seriously like to know where your coming from.  I just can't understand how people with your views get to that view point.  How talk of providing healthcare for people without it becomes a bad thing.  How  things get tagged as 'socialist' and fought so hard against.  Are you just so scared that health insurance profits wouldn't be so astronomically high?  We're talking about protecting human life, and providing care for the sick.  How can you be against that and still talk about 'god'?  Whats so wrong with socialism anyway?  God forbid we take care of our people.  It  comes down to greed.  Pure and simple.  Keeping the billions of dollars rolling into the corporation, so that they can give the politicians kick backs in the form of campaign financing.

--As far as government run healthcare picking and choosing what treatments you get, it simply doesn't work that way.  Look at Medicare, thats government run and it doesn't pick and choose who gets what.  Plus all the people against Healthcare reform are PRO medicare.  Saying that the government will decide what treatments you get is pure scare tactic, and looks like you fell for it.  Healthcare reform is about equal coverage for everyone, what your describing is the current system.

I'm talking about people that throw around the socialist title on people and don't bother to think things through.  I'm talking about people who talk about how they are so against the current adminstration and don't bother to even know what they stand for.

I'm not saying that you're not being real in regards to being a decent person. I have no reason to think otherwise. I was saying you were not being real in regards to, what i assumed, you were saying the direction our country was heading in. What it sounded like was you were pretty much saying everything was going to turn horrible and Obama is going to take all of our rights and turn us socialist, which, as I was saying, is completely unrealistic (and I realize i'm paraphrasing, so I know that's not exactly what you said). That's where I said you were being unreal. And I agree we should be able to have free and positive discussions on here and anywhere else. I was simply stating that the direction you were taking your argument went a bit extreme and I was asking you to really think about whether or not you really thought things were as bad, or would be as bad, as you made them sound. Dont' get me wrong, I really enjoy talking to people with a different perspsective than I have. There's really no room for growth as a person if we don't have these conversations and I appreciate you being civil throughout. You could have started insulting me, and instead you calmly plead your case, which i respect. And I know it's a free country, I live here too and I love it.

I don't think it's any worse then any of the Bush images floating around from the past few years. And if you reallt research what he is doing, you'll find he is driving the nation in that direction, I don't know anyone that voted for him that is happy with what he's done or is trying to do. I won't be voting for him in 2012.

I'm also not going to respond to anyone so please don't respond to this. I frankly don't come here to talk about politics and really wish that we could read our comics and escape. Not see him pushed on us there as he is every where else in the media. I'm very saddened that this would make to the vine, as this is normally a good place to post without worrying about the Lifehacker style political pieces. I'm more then a  little disappointed here.

@Tmul501: I believe there is alot of decency in this world, but I'm just saying the ones that are incharge shouldn't be a Bag of Corrupt retards. I just feel that since it has to do with the real world it's up for whatever people want to write about thier political values "

@Tmul501: Yes I understand I did kind of take my argument a little to extreme and I apologize. Thankyou for being understanding and kind in responses to mine. I would write more, but I got to go to sleep. t2u all latta..  God bless

cant deny that the current state of affairs doesnt have alot of relevance to that of the Soviet Union before its break up, or Orwells 1985 if you will, at least that its structering in that direction, but people as a whole are responsible for how their yard looks, and over the duration of time. i never believe the figurehead/spokesperson is the credited, nor is that mathmatically sound.

I do not think it was a good idea to do, i can see how it can be satirical. But, it can be taken offensive.

However, if it was a political statement its kinda sick (just saying).

I do not know what purpose it had, but (personally) i find it weird and sorta offensive. That's just what I think.

I can definitely see how many can take offense to this. by making the the face of Barack Obama look like that of the joker's, you are calling him (Obama) a sick, unbalanced, unhinged psychopath who is represented as an agent of chaos. And not to mention changing the definition of socialism. But let me ask you, if Obama is the joker...then who the hell is Bush? Batman? Yea right . but then again..who really cares right? its just someones opinion.  let them think it and display it however they want to.  however i must admit, that is a very well edited picture.

Yeah, I was thinking that too, people don't like the idea of a class system, but most don't realize were in a class system. ( which was a characteristic of Socialism in China and in USSR). Most people associate Socialism with Totalitarianism.

I just want to know what's so frickin' horrible with socialism? I live in Sweden, a socialist country and I think we have the highest taxes in the world. That's the downside, but in return we get free health care, free dental care for everybody who's younger than 18 years old and free education, and that's far from all the good things we get. So, anybody, could you tell me what's so bad with socialism?

While this isn't Rosanne Barr dressed like Hitler, this isn't the first time I've seen the Joker used to illustrate a point about politicians. Folks who don't support Obama view the current president as someone who has done his best to shoe-horn in socialist ideals into capitalist America. But I find, personally, that Obama has no clear direction, and indeed, no real goal in mind for our country other than to satisfy his constituents' special interests and to turn the fabric of our country into something wholly unrecognizable. Be it the current desire to force feed us universal healthcare, making the uneducated claim about the country's police force, "spreading the wealth," or attempting to transport Gitmo's worst of the worst to Michigan, Obama's a President that "just does things." Like the Joker, he's like a dog chasing cars. Now that he's been elected President of the United States, he doesn't know what to do with it. Socialist? Perhaps. Good for the country? Absolutely not.

Sure, because he can't do things too brutally in a land where shooting President are almost like a tradition ! :-)

Now seriously, it's just the tide of opinon, and you can see it in almost all democratics country, I call it the six step policical cycle :

First : The rush (  Yeah we've won !  )
Second : disappointement (  Wait ! you can't do all you've promised ?
Third : the hate (I can't believe we've put this douchbag into power ! But I can't take the responsibility on me, so f... you !)

At this point, most of the President get some REAL hate, and some get shot, depending on the gun policy of the state in which they live. If they get killed, they go cometly to the status of sainthood (Just check Kennedy, Lincoln, or even Jules Cesar ! and there are LOT of others...) BUT if they survived...

Fourth : The new hope ! ( Well, he made some minor move in the right way, after all...maybe it's the end of the mandate but anyway...)
Five : The Phantom menace ( Oh, the new election, well I do not know this new guy, maybe it's better the devil you know...)
Six : The clone wars ( It's the end of his last mandate...$h@t, we're goin' to vote again ? They're all the same anyway )

Now, frankly, I think many american have the terrible habit to label something they won't like "Leftist", or "socialim" when this it suit them. And many people in the world think they can get all they have for nothing. (This is, of course, wrong.) Even solidarity and wellfare state comes at price...

If we where living in a socialist country then the person who made that poster would probably be in prison right about now.  Bet who ever made it doesn't think about that.  Hell they probably didn't even vote.  People like this want those in power to fix all the problems over night but are not willing to make the sacrifices that come along with it.

I’ll never forget that press release when Obama believes that what doesn’t kill you simply makes you stranger. His “Madness is like Gravity” speech rivaled JFK. God damned McCain…he’s one of those schemers trying to take control of his little world.

“You know what I’ve noticed? Nobody panics when things go according to plan. If tomorrow I tell the press that a gangbanger will get shot or a truck full of soldiers will get blown up…nobody panics because it’s all part of the plan. But when I paint one little ‘ole photo of Obama…everyone looses their minds!!! Introduce a little socialism, upset the established order. I’m an agent of socialism. Oh and you know the thing about socialism? It’s fair”

And Bush was closer to Hitler then Obama is to Joker...by a long shot. Hitler - Jews, Bush - Gays.

"
To the best of my knowledge, Bush never executed 6 million gays. Bush was no saint that's for sure, but he was no Hitler either. "

No, but that wasn't my analogy either. They both view them as inferior. Intolerance is their common bond, not to mention I did happen to leave out the many Muslim innocence that Bush is responsible for killing.

Well...  there is a difference between communism and socialism... countries like Sweden have a long tradition of socialist ideas.... and let's face it, socialism did wonders for the people there and it's very hard to be against their ideas... they just seem to be good for the whole society better than the actual massacre tof the "utopic capitalism" became for the regular worker... I doubt Obama has anything to do with communism lol.

God do I hope, otherwise my hope for humanity might have just died. You know what's amazing? We're living in a world when information has never been easier to obtain. You have to put in little to no effort into searching for and discover knowledge and awareness. The tangible dictionary’s becoming extinct, and yet people still don’t grasp the proper definitions and meanings of the words they criticize. To put it bluntly…too many people are freaking stupid.

Oh lord you guys are killing me here.  Its about how a system will work not about the laws.  Take Belgium for example.  Its a socialist government yet it is illegal to say anything derogatory about the king and government.  In most socialist governments, hell any government for that matter, the people in power have tried to keep the derogatory information about those in power in check.  This holds true for any form of government because the people in power want to say there.  What I was saying was that whoever made set poster has the freedom to do so when so many others in the world do not.  Oh and before anyone comments I like Belgium.

I personally think that socialism is not that bad.  It has its problems just like every other system but like others have stated here, its working pretty good in Europe.  Only thing is and this is where I think that people will have issue, one has to give up the broad spectrum of freedoms that we all love and share for it to work.

Joker represents anarchism to me. Whoever made this poster may be trying to say that President Obama seeks to spread socialist anarchism. The health care plan is only the begining. He wants to take away our private property, and have us all live in cooperating free communities like shiny happy people, for the sake of equality. Yeah okay. I actually know people who believe this.

You'd be wrong. I take it you missed "socialism" written at the bottom?

That being said, it still doesn't make any sense considering that the Joker is an anarchist, not a socialist. It's clear, however, that the artist was trying to be slanderous, regardless of how bad he actually failed.

Yeah, actually, it has. Everyone knows that Communism is the best political system on paper! I think that most people with any knowledge on Socialist political systems will agree that there are several European countries that have healthy functioning socialist political systems. In fact, I will go as far to say as the United States may have at one point or another looked to these countries in order to better understand how they are capable of providing things like universal healthcare to their citizens.

Obama’s been getting a lot of heat over the past couple of weeks and he’s a polarizing figure to many.   I know I go to one of those poles, and I’ve got nothing against making fun of him or anyone else.   So instead I’d like to address the whole socialism thing since as a History major and Sociology minor I have slightly different take on the word.

For starts Socialism is just a word, it could mean anything.   When taken into the current political climate it does seem to mean everything from a puppy and bunny wonderland to a cold dark government death machine.   The truth is that it’s neither.   Every single Western European Country as well as and (basically every industrialized nation outside the ) considers itself a Socialist country.   I know you’re saying, ‘But Unsung they aren’t like Soviet Russia, they have all the freedoms supplied by the United States Constitution and didn’t write ’s constitution after the war?   So does that mean that we’ve always been Communists?”

Well that’s a good question; the simple answer is that saying that socialism is really just like Soviet Russia or Nazi Germany is a gross misunderstanding of the term meant to demonize it to a populace unfamiliar with other forms of Governments.  It also doesn’t take into account that both nations had dictatorships or at least dictators for most of their histories.   In a dictatorship the government owns everything or decides everything similar to Communism but in this case only one individual has the power.

Also to suggest that Obama could make America a Socialist state like let’s say Sweden which has one of the lowest death rates, crime rates, and poverty rates in the world in even 8 years is downright ridiculous.   It’s also ridiculous to suggest that in a socialist country like oh I don’t know, England where parodies of political figures especially in the face of the recent major scandals in parliament, would not either surface in the mass media or even be produced by the mass media and instead be bared by some sort of government boogie man.

Really it makes me feel safe and secure that I live in where at least we don’t censor our Mass media.  And freedom of speech is free to the point where things like nudity and cursing can be seen and heard on major TV stations just like ALL of .

"
Thank you. I think we are on the same playing field.

Unfortunately I think not enough people understood that this was less about "negative feedback against Obama" and more about the fact that this poor attempt at making a shocking political statement made no sense.

Which is why I originally asked, "what is the message that the person who created this image is trying to convey by drawing a comparison between a psychotic mass murderer and our current President?"

I believe the caption related to Obama, but the entire message is just so poorly executed that it makes no sense.

Let's see if I can work through the "logic" of this poster:

1.  The Joker is evil
2.  Socialism is evil
3.  Therefore the Joker is a socialist
4.  Obama is a socialist
5.  Therefore Obama is the Joker
6.  Therefore Obama is evil!

That's some air-tight reasoning there.  Next up: "Obama is a great big socialist poo-poo head and I don't like him!"

But you could then say the same thing about the ones showing Bush as Hitler or the Devil. Just doesn't make alot of sense. But then again half the people in the country get a laugh out of it.
