This is surprising yet it also makes perfect sense.  Grindhouse will be releasing the original The Evil Dead to select movie theaters for midnight showings.  According to a press release posted at Chud.com, Sam Rami along with producers Robert Tapert and Bruce Campbell have given the okay to make this happen.  The movie first came out in 1981 and Stephen King described it as "the most ferociously original film of the year."  This is the movie that started Raimi and Tapert's careers.  It's also the movie that launched Campbell's iconic status.  The low-budget movie was released independently and had a self-imposed "No One Under 17" rating due to its graphic violence and gore.

Last summer a special screening of the Evil Dead trilogy sold out L.A.'s New Beverly Cinema.  There has been talk of a remake for a while.  Bruce Campbell commented on the movie's return:

Nothing can prepare an audience for what they are about to see, because nothing punishes an audience like EVIL DEAD - especially on the big screen. I'm really glad it's back. People are gonna be hurt.

The midnight showings will be in select theaters across the U.S. and Canada.  Dates and theaters will be announced soon at GrindhouseReleasing.com.  Have you seen the original movie?  Would you see a midnight showing of it if it plays in your area?
