The Defense: Too Many Batman On-Going Titles?

Does he really need six?

No Caption Provided
When it comes to comic books, there's a lot to choose from, but when you find that certain character you love, you'll most certainly buy anything that character is involved in. Undoubtedly, one of the biggest comic book heroes to date is DC Comics Batman. Currently, Batman has six on-going books he's a part of, and he also has a few mini-series flying around as well. Not all the books currently feature Dick Grayson as Batman, but the mantle stays the same. There are quite a few to choose from, but are all of them needed?

Currently, Batman has 6 on-going titles: Batman, Detective Comics, Batman and Robin, Batman: Streets of Gotham, Superman Batman, and Batman Confidential. That's more comics starring the same character than any other hero at any publisher. Aside from that, he always has at least two mini-series going on at the same time. Does he really need this many books though? In the defense of Batman, I think he does.
== TEASER ==
Each comic focuses on aspects within the Dark Knight's life. Take Batman and Robin for instance. As much as this is a super-hero book, it's also a book about father and son relationships. Now, Dick isn't Damien's actual father (Bruce Wayne is), but Dick has grown up a lot in the past year, stepped up, and become that father figure that Damien truly needs. Along the same lines, Superman Batman is much like that. Instead of a father son relationship, we see more of a "brotherly love" relationship. A man who has all the powers in the world, but is emotionally weak teams up with a man with no powers, but emotionally strong. Think of it as a modern day Odd Couple.

There's two other on-going titles that many people seem confused why they exist: Batman: Streets of Gotham and Batman Confidential. Batman: Streets of Gotham, to me, is essentially, "What if Batman The Animated Series kept going, but got darker and more adult?" Paul Dini, who was also a part of Batman: The Animated series, has done an amazing job at keeping this book fresh and a lot of fun to read. The other book that doesn't get enough praise is Batman Confidential. This book does what other Batman books can't do, it tells stories that don't take place in main continuity. Many can argue that Superman Batman does the same thing, but one of the great things Confidential does is retell stories without messing with continuity, like the first time Batman met the Joker, or the first time Bad Cop (terrible name for a character, but a great character none-the-less) was introduced. Be weary though, sometimes the stories can be less than stellar. It all depends on what creative team is on the book.

That leaves us with the two big ones, Batman and Detective Comics. As weak as this argument may be, why get rid of them? It usually has the best, most innovative creative teams and the most interesting stories. Both books have been around for more than 70 years, and the majority of Batman stories you remembered, came from one of those two books.

There you have it. Batman may have six ongoing comics currently, but each of them has their own place in the world of Gotham and Batman. What do you think? Is there one of these books that doesn't deserve to be a part of the Batman world? Tell us why!

Here's the thing as long as people keep buying they will make more the other high selling characters are Green Lantern and Flash now there are three GL books and soon a second Flash book and next year a Flash based event.

As long as some characters make money for DC that's all they need to justify it.

And like the article says they all offer different things but still some should get cancelled like the Dini books.

I can understand that you wouldn't want any of those series to stop. But the main problem for fans is: it's hard to buy them all.

I for example love the Deadpool character ever since Joe Kelly 's run. And, for me (and a lot of other people that are annoyed by the character, but whatever) he currently has too many series. There are currently 3 ongoings, 2 mini series, and another 2 mini series and 1 ongoing on the way.

Now this all might still be doable if you're only reading one character. But a lot of us, I think, are reading more than one character. I myself am also buying the Invincible Iron Man series and the Avengers series.

Point being: it's good that a character gets explored so deeply, it's also unfortunate that this forces a lot of readers to decide which to buy, and which not to buy.

Not to hijack this post, but i'm less concerned about Batman titles and more about the expanding Green Lantern world.  Tomasi\Gleeson's GLC was great and it incorporated all the "lesser" lanterns.  Now having GL, GLC, and Emerald Warriors...things are getting pretty thin.  I'm thinking about just trade waiting on GL and GLC now.

Flash, now that's what i'm getting into.  And it's one book!  I know about Speed Force in 2011, but I want Barry stories, so i get them in Flash.

They're sort of flooding the market when it comes to Batman. If I were trying to fix that, I'd cut Confidential, Superman Batman, and Detective Comics, but I'm not. If it's a movie that fans don't want then it'll reflect in sales. If there's one thing companies listen to it's sales.

That book doesn't sell well. Hence why DC was so open to re-vamping her. However, if people start picking that book up? A second one on the WW Family would follow and movies would follow.....it all depends on what sells. For DC, slap a Bat on it and it sells well.

If Wonder Woman sold enough she would get another book Green Lantern also is so there are three books and another Flash book and event is coming they give the more books if the characters sells.

I think people just largely except that this the standard operation procedure with Batman because it has been this way for a loooooooooooong time. I do however think it is strange when someone says "OMG Wolverine is so overexposed!"... and then goes off to confirm the twelve Batman appearances in their pull list next month.

You really think Superman is the emotionally weak one and Batman is the emotionally strong one?  I think that's totally backwards.  The core of Superman is that he's an alien, but so human in his character.  He is all about his emotions and relationships to others.  Batman, on the other hand, has made his name on being dark and scary, unscrutable and distant from those he works with.  There's hardly any emotion to him whatsoever.

As for the number of titles, I've always thought that Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, the X-Men, and probably one or two I'm not thinking of (oh, wait, the Avengers) have too many books.  I think Batman should star in Batman, and that's it.  Detective could focus on other characters... even other characters in the Batman Family.  All those other tales could be told as back-up features in the main Batman book, and be collected to trades from the back-ups.  For $3.99 (or $2.99, whichever it is), we ought to get a little more bang for our buck.  I mean, think about it: six titles a month is seventy-two issues a year (@$2.99 = $215.28 [before taxes]; @$3.99 = $287.28 [before taxes]).  That's a lot of money to just follow one character throughout the year.  I follow these characters in trade paperback, if at all - of course, that's paying about the same money (give or take).  It's just too much.

I don't really count Superman/ Batman, because to me, that's just World's Finest renamed, and that one was always special to me - I love reading about Superman and Batman working together.  However, if only an all-or-nothing answer will satisfy the question, then even the Superman/Batman stories could be told in the Batman and Superman books, as back-ups.

The thing about the Batman books though is many are different takes on the character or like Streets of Gotham star different characters.

@lostlantern13 @johnny spam  Yeah.  Well aware and way ahead of you on that.  I realize that selling lots of one book = expansion for other titles, but, seriously and not to hijack the thread, you'd think that at least one other title would have surfaced in the past decades while Batman, and Im giving credit where credit is due, has oodles of titles.  Merely pointing out the gap here.

my ONLY issue with this is that batman died and Dick Grayson is now batman.......ok thats fine but really what good or rather DC does not really have the balls to have batman dead because not all the books are about dick! its really cheating the past year that Bruce has been gone he has not been GONE you can still go buy a bruce wayne story monthly floopy style! and that is a BS move if DC wanted to replace him with Grayson then have the balls to DO IT! I for one would have loved to see superman and grayson teamup marvel did the same with cap all of which i feel is cheap

Well Bruce never died and it was confirmed he was alive in Final Crisis the whole time. The whole point really has been his return and Dick and Damian and Tim wanting to find him.

this article only justifies the amount of titles, not really shows that they're needed,
but regardless, if there are 6 great batman stories going on at the same time,
by all means go for it,
it all works if it's good story telling,
unlike deadpool messes that print 'em for the sake of printing,

They tried this past year but I guess not enough people bought if you look at them now Superman in Superman with Last Family and Superman Earth one, Lex in Action, Supergirl, Legion of Superheroes and Adventure Comics and soon Superboy. Superman Secret Origin but it's really inconsistent. It's almost the opposite approach.

There are so many good Batman titles to choose from! I usually wait for reviews and get one or two unless i'm following a specific arc / storyline.
I guess numerous titles make sense because there are so many interesting things that you can do with the character, and not all of them should be a "main" storyline ( especially certain events from  The Widening Gyre ), or even canon ( i don't think Superman/Batman is canon). And some people probably do buy all six titles, but they're probably on Bruce Waynes financial level too ;)
Oh, and then there's books relating to Batman but don't feature him like Batgirl, Red-Robin, Gotham City Sirens, and that Loker's Asylum Mini-Series. So yeah, It's alot.

Uncanny, Legacy (which is pretty much a lame Rogue solo book trying to pass for an X-Men title), New (New) X-Men, X-Factor (who are pretty isolated from the X-Men for the most part outside of crossovers), X-Force and Astonishing X-Men (which only comes out once in a blue moon.) Not that many.

And how many characters are in the X-Men? Get out of here comparing a massive team like the X-Men to one character.....

Maybe If you bold it and add some more !!! to the caps your point will really get across.

More stories are great as long as the stories themselves are great.
The only problems are money and getting up to date on what's been going on. All of these Batman comics with mini series would amount to over £20 ($32)  a month for one character, for me that's pricey especially when you're following other characters. At the minute I'm reading the Invicible Iron Man and all of the on going Deadpool comics which is a crazy amount as well. I'm also hoping to catch up with Thor, Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Dark Wolverine and many others but I simply can't afford it which is a sucks because we get to miss a large amount of the stories

I recently got into comics and I started with Battle for the Cowl as much as all the different titles make my head spin sometimes each is important in piecing together the story of the bat. And that 6 doesn't include the other series were he semi-frequently appears like Red Robin. I wouldn't change it. :D
