You’ve got your New Avengers and your West Coast Avengers and your Mighty Avengers and your Young Avengers… why not have your Dead Avengers too? This November, Fred Van Lente and Tom Grummet are doing a tie-in mini-series for CHAOS WAR that’ll be titled DEAD AVENGERS. The scoop is that the Chaos King’s multiversal rampage will actually destroy a number of after life realms (afterlives), dropping all the deceased members of the Avengers back into the 616 verse. After they’re assembled into a team by a mysterious player, Captain Marvel I, Swordsman I, Yellowjacket II, Deathcry, Dr. Druid and early incarnation of the Vision will do battle with the recently-deputized Grim Reaper.
This is something of, dare I say, spiritual successor to one of my favorite story arcs from the Busiek/ Perez on AVENGERS that saw the Reaper bring back the Lethal Legion the drew from the ranks of fallen Avengers. That particular adventure resurrected Wonder Man for good and also featured Thunderstrike and Mockingbird (as she was dead at the time.) Van Lente says he’s going to be paying tribute to the classic runs that originally featured these characters - - particular Swordsman I’s appearances in the first 100 odd issues of AVENGERS - - I wonder if he’ll be peppering any references to that arc? == TEASER ==
Between this line-up of Dead Avengers, the Cancerverse in the cosmic sector all the Marvel Zombie stuff, Marvel’s certainly carved up its own corner of the undead hasn’t it? I hadn’t heard too much about this CHAOS WAR crossover before this, but it’s sounding like a good opportunity to do some house cleaning. Cut some extraneous multiverses away... snuff out some dead characters for good.... all in time for New Year's.
