'The Dark Knight Rises': What's in Store?

What can we expect to see in Christopher Nolan's upcoming film,'The Dark Knight Rises'?

No Caption Provided
Of all of the rumors that have been circling Christopher Nolan's upcoming film, The Dark Knight Rises, one thing remains consistent: this will be his last Batman movie. In an interview with MTV back in February, Nolan indicated pretty clearly that 'The Dark Knight Rises' will be the end of the trilogy. "We're very much excited about really finishing a trilogy and giving a conclusion to our story. And that's what we're doing." While brief, these few words are incredibly telling; they reinforce that beyond the surface of all the action and adventure, Nolan's Batman films are tied together seamlessly by a single theme and that The Dark Knight Rises will close the chapter on it.

 == TEASER ==

Ra's al Ghul
Ra's al Ghul
If this is to be the finale to his Batman movies, why call it 'The Dark Knight Rises'? Using the word "rise" is indicative of the beginning of something —and essentially, it should. If I had to guess, The Dark Knight Rises will act as a culmination of the lessons learned in both previous Nolan Batman films by Bruce Wayne- and that it is in this film that Batman will finally rise as a vigilante hero and come into his own.

The story of Nolan's Batman is gradual. Batman was born in Batman Begins; the first film. Haunted by the violent murder of his parents, Bruce Wayne finds redemption and validation in serving justice through vigilantism, dressing as Batman and eliminating corruption and mob control (by the Falcone family) in Gotham after enduring years of training in ninjutsu by Ra's al Ghul. It is in this film that Batman/Bruce Wayne's ideals are challenged by Ra's al Ghul, who's draconian ideology and desire to destroy the world to perfect it creates a rift between the two characters.

In the second Batman film, The Dark Knight, we once more witness Bruce's struggle —however this time it is predominantly internal. The second Batman film served to challenge Bruce as Batman as well as his idea of heroism. This concept was particularly prevalent in the interactions between Bruce Wayne and Harvey Dent. Bruce wants what Harvey has, and in a way sees him (at least at one point) as a symbol of true heroism. The difference between Bruce and Harvey is that Harvey does not have to hide who he is. Harvey can step out as himself, a hero, in the light while Bruce must remain in the shadows. Harvey is recognized as a symbol of heroism, and to a certain extent (at least until the end of the film), Bruce resents him for that. This film is as much about Bruce's inner conflict as it is about the idea that the existence of Batman is not necessarily a good thing. In an interview with the New York Times in 2008, following the production and release of The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan cited that an underlying theme in his Batman films is the idea that the existence of Batman is what brings about the lunatics of Gotham

As we looked through the comics, there was this fascinating idea that Batman’s presence in Gotham actually attracts criminals to Gotham, attracts lunacy. When you’re dealing with questionable notions like people taking the law into their own hands, you have to really ask, where does that lead? That’s what makes the character so dark, because he expresses a vengeful desire.

The idea that Gotham's lunatics exist because Batman exists is something that has long been reinforced in the comics; and one that was first introduced in Frank Miller's Batman: Year One —a book that heavily influenced the script for Batman Begins. By the end of the film, Bruce takes the blame for Two-Face's crimes in order to protect Harvey Dent's name —a symbol of martyrdom and heroism. In this scene, Bruce accepts that Batman must remain in the dark and that he does not fall into the mold of what society considers to be a true hero. This idea is fully realized in the last scene of the film where Commissioner Gordon watches Batman run from police and he says, "Because he's [Batman] the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now. So, we'll hunt him, because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight. ."

So, what will The Dark Knight Rises bring?  While it is difficult to speculate what lessons Bruce Wayne/Batman will learn in the final installment of Nolan's series, we can still guess at what the relationships between the new characters Nolan plans to introduce will be. If you ask me, the best way to complete the film is to go back to the very beginning- Ra's al Ghul and the League of Shadows- a casting that had been recently confirmed. The possibility of the inclusion of Talia al Ghul, Ra's daughter (actress Marion Cotillard) would bridge the connection between Batman, his past, and Ra's al Ghul. While the casting confirmation speculates that actor Josh Pence will play a young Ra's al Ghul; whose to say that Nolan won't integrate Ra's use of the Lazarus Pit's in his next film?

Additionally, the reveal of Catwoman (being played by actress Anne Hathaway) in the upcoming movie may be linked to the Falcone family, much like she was in The Long Halloween, a series Nolan previously used as a reference for Batman Begins. In the Knightfall series, Bane (who will be played by Tom Hardy) looked to Catwoman for help, so there may be a connection there. Reinforcing a struggle over the control of Gotham City between the Falcone family and the "lunatics" that now exist in Gotham because of Batman would bridge the series together.

In the past, Christopher Nolan has indicated how difficult it is to duplicate the success of a film (The Dark Knight is one of the top ten highest grossing films of all time), but that he would not make a movie for the sake of making a movie. "I wouldn't want to do one if it weren't going to be as good as the first or second. That's not respectful to the fans," he told the USA Today in an interview. One thing is for sure, whatever happens in the upcoming film, Christopher Nolan has his fans in mind.

What would you like to see in 'The Dark Knight Rises'? What did you love about the last two Batman films, and how do you want to see Nolan bridge the trilogy together?

UPDATE

Earlier today, Warner Brothers confirmed that both Marion Cotillard and Joseph Gordon Levitt have been cast in the upcoming film Dark Knight Rises. Cotillard will portray Miranda Tate, and Levitt has been cast as John Blake. You can check out the write up for details on the casing here. So there goes my theory of Marion Cotillard's possible portrayal of Talia al Ghul...or is it? Will these two actors really be portraying these characters, or is the studio simply protecting their script? What do you think?

I want to see the Mob vs. Freaks, Batman Vs. Everybody.. Oh yeah...Black Mask. I really don't care what role Kyle has in this, Hathaway's just plain ol' nice to look at.

Batman broken by Bane and Talia early in the movie, he nurses himself back to health in order to restore order and take down the mob and crazies, beats Bane/Talia and movie ends with him firmly established as the "Bat God"

I always thought that would be the perfect opening for Nightwing in a movie. While Batman is out of commission, a fellow vigilante rises (Nightwing) to fill the space.

Always wanted Nightwing in a movie. No one seems to get that YOU DON'T NEED HIM AS ROBIN FIRST. Just make a movie that starts '5 years later', or have Nightwing as a full on new crime-fighter. Even Deathstroke or Azrael could work as focal points. They could be 'rival vigilantes' that kill, so Batman could try to talk some sense into them.

I don't have a doubt that the (rise) part of Dark Knight Rises is the people of Gotham all finally excepting Batman as hero.  I have a feeling he'll inspire peole the way he wanted people to be inspired to do good.  More pre-two-face Harvey like citizens of Gotham.  There is no way this is going to end either.  WB has it's own James Bond character it can work with.  A charcter that can be played by a lot of differant actors and directed by a number of differant directors.  Even if Nolan is pissed with that idea, the only real way to end it is for Batman to be killed, and that's not going to happen.  So far this has worked so well, the style of how Batman is being interpreted, so I would expect WB to use a similar type of director when they do decide to keep going with Batman.  I think of the Tranformers movies in this aspect.  Sure Steven Spielberg didn't direct any Transformers movie befor Michael Bay, but when you watch them they have a Spielberg type of style to them.  Spielberg is good at getting directors that would film movies in his style to movies he produces.  Look at Goonies.  Richard Donner to me, is a total Spielberg bighter.  I also don't care.  I like the movies, Tranformers 1 and 2 and Goonies.  So if it's done right, and there is a Nolan rip-off I won't care.................as long as the movie is good.

"I hope they really only use Bane as muscle, and not a villain with a plan, because he's really not much more than that. They could go for a drug trafficking angle i guess.

I also hope Catwoman gets to be on both sides of the law, and that she's a vigilante thief like she is in the comics. I want her to both fight and help Batman.

I'm not sure how i feel about re-using Ras al Ghul. Using the lazarus pit would be cool but it would feel out of place in the Nolanverse. But i'd like to see Talia as long as she fights Catwoman and loses haha.

Dark Knight is one of my favorite movie, and i'm afraid that they might ruin this third movie, but i'm sure i'll like it no matter what. Regarding life lessons, i think this one will be about Batman redeeming himself in the eyes of Gotham.

(also i hope they move from the WayneTech Basement to the Batcave!)

"I suspect that the Cat Woman story-line is going to take center stage with Bane as a minor character. Bane will probably have some connection to Ra's Al Ghul (perhaps, like Batman, Bane was trained by Ra's, but unlike Batman, he chose a path of destruction) and will eventually "Break The Bat", just as Cat Woman falls into certain peril, forcing Batman to overcome his physical impairment and save the day. Also, they will likely refer to Cat Woman's origins with the Falcone Crime family - which would partially explain Levitt as Holiday. Personally I think that the Holiday story can go in one of two directions: either the Falcone family is trying to seek vengeance upon Two-Face for killing Carmine Falcone in The Dark Knight, with Alberto as the new head of the Family (which I doubt only because the last film was about the fall of the mafia and the rise of costumed villains, so including the mob might make the film redundant). Or Alberto will try to become a costumed villain himself and get into hot water.

Anyways, I'm really looking forward to what they might do with this story!

"my favorite part of batman is Ra's al Ghul and the League of Assassins..or in this..the League of Shadows...so im excited to see what Nolan brings in this script. Be kinda cool to see Liam Neeson make another appearance at the very end of the film..but then that would mean the Lazarus Pits would have to be involved and that just depends if nolan wants to stretch things...he likes making things seem very believable..

as for Bane i don't see him being a huge character in this movie..maybe an awesome fight scene..and if anything i see him working for the League....maybe just replace the character Max Cort in the Prey mini series......i predict that they are just gonna him be a big buy that can fight and think..i don't think he would even have the venom to make him huge like we've seen before....if anyone has seen the Young Justice episode with bane i see him kinda like that just no venom..no tubes............if that route was taken with using the venom then i would ask if he would somehow be connected to Dr Hugo Strange.....

I heard rumors while ago about the use of Dr. Hugo Strange in this movie..I think that would be a great idea...he was in the first issue of batman along with joker and catwoman....i would hope that they would keep him more around Jim Gordon tho.... like if Dr. Strange was working for the GCPD to help figure out who Batman is...kinda like in Prey

As for Catwoman...i was kinda expecting it and im looking forward to it...just please take more of just a jewel heist catwoman...not a pushed out of window by christopher walken catwoman.....not that michelle pfeiffer didnt do bad i just dont like that origin story...but yea i think it will be good....i c that Holly Robinson is in the script as well...so i wonder how she will be involved with catwoman.....the story i would kinda like to see would be is if Black Mask was in the movie and maybe killed Holly....leaving Selina with the choice of being a hero (if she somehow helps batman in the movie) or shooting Black Mask in the head (ref Catwoman #52) and choosing to be a villian....

so yea Black Mask would be neat....Joseph Gordon still doesnt have a role or at least not announced so who know but Nolan and the crew.....

Talia
Ra's
Bane
Catwoman
Hugo Strange
Black Mask
and maybe a few small appearances kinda like Zsasz
"

Not sure what makes you people think Bane is just gonna be muscle and or/second fiddle to Strange and Black Mask(2 characters who are'nt even in the movie and i GUARANTEE they'll never make it under Nolan, not with Arkham City and Cap America on the horizon).Bane is smarter
than both.If anything they'd be working for him.Bane is a lot more than muscle and he's a waaaay bigger threat than either those 2 guys.Max Cort was just some random cop, dont understand why he's being compared to a guy whom Ra's al ghul described as having one of the most deadliest minds on Earth,Ra's makes  guys like Strange and Mask  piss their pants.

@Edamame:  Probably Holly, Selina Kyle's sidekick. With any hope this won't mean she's yet again a prostitute, I so hate that Miller-esque plot but "street smart Gotham girl" was the description of Temple's character so it makes sense.

Besides the possibility of bane incapacitating bats, i'd also like too see them get portrayed as brothers (half/full) just like what almost happened in the tabula rasa storyline!

And I do hope when Bale gets older in the future, he might consider making miller's the dark knight returns ala nolan style..

My guess?
An open-ended closing act.

Also the legacy of Bruce/Batman could as well continue on another protagonist. (Dick Grayson? who knows, right? even without a Robin thrown in the mix..)

I kinda hope they stay away from the Ra's/Talia Al Ghul stuff this time. I feel like Batman messed them up enough in the first one, what with blowing up their base and leaving Liam Neeson on that train.

Batman will be hunted by the police after the events in the second movie. But since Gordon knows that Batman is innocent he won't be trying that hard to catch him. The mayor gets frustrated by the lack of results and hires a group of mercenaries led by Bane to get the job done.
That's what I think it will be about. Not sure what Selina's role will be, though.

I thing 'Rises' is going to refer to Batman shedding the 'wanted vigilante criminal' moniker he got stuck with at the end of TDK and being realized as Gotham's true hero... also could refer to being dragged down to some level beneath him and he manages to rise above it all.

I'm still surprised that many haven't picked up on Nolan's sort of 'real world' vision of Batman.  There are no mutants, or resurrections, or aliens or super powers, etc.  Joker was a maniac in clown makeup... not a guy who somehow managed to survive swimming in a vat of chemicals that inexplicably turns his hair green and skin white.  Scarecrow works because he uses hallucinogenics... Ra's simply the head of a 'ninja assassin' cult rather than the guy who keeps coming back from the dead.  taking into account that Nolan left out the truly 'fantastic', I doubt we'll see a resurrected Ra's or fantastic enemies such as Ivy or Clayface (I guess Croc would always be viable if you took the 'disease' explanation about his condition...).

I  think Black is going to have Tate lure Bruce Wayne/Batman to him and bring him to Crime Alley (ALLEY WERE THOMAS & MARTHA WAYNE DIED) to watch them die. Black can transport himself and others threw time. Batman will want to save his parent but if he does Batman would have never existed, so the best way to stop Batman is to never have him exist. Batman will realize he cant save them otherwise Black, Tate, Catwoman, and or Bane will steal, murder, ext. or whatever Nolan has planed! Batman will make the chose of his life, save his parents and end his pain or become a true Dark Knight dedicating his life to crime fighting and enduring the pain that comes with his choice. Batman will chose the cape and cowl obviously hence the title The Dark Night RISES! Bruce will forever be haunted by his choice but the hero will rise. Catwoman and Bane I am not sure I think Bane should beat him near death but not break his back. Catwoman and Batman affair should be tied in to and I think the best ending would be Selina (Catwoman) and them going on a date to the circus and and the Ring Master introducing The Flying Graysons (DICK GRAYSON AKA ROBIN).  That would make the perfect ending, Batman becomes The True Dark Knight the Selina affair is introduced Robin is added to the story and you know the story from there! That's what I would like see almost like a Batman Year One Story but details changed a little. Regardless I am sure the movie will be great but it will be hard to follow up The Dark Knight in my opinion, Christian Bale is a good Batman don't get me wrong but Heath Ledger Stole the show and story. I like the casting but whats with the WILD Storm characters and Anne Hathaway as Catwoman, I just don't see it turning out well. I can't wait though and I am sure Nolan is working hard to make this the best and he is one of the best at what he does! Thanks Sara 'Babs' Lima that's a great update on The Dark Knight Rises, can't wait to hear more new. Keep me updated!!

I am thoroughly terrified they are going to portray Bane as some mindless bruiser who shrivels to a weakling after cutting the tubs, like every other non-comic version of him.

I hope they do without the venom entirely, he hasnt had that weakness for nearly two decades, I hope they focus more on how he's a mental match for the Dark Knight.

@WadeWilson:  Thank you! I don't know why some people are so hung up on bringing Robin into the mix.   I would argue that the introduction of Robin is one of the things that killed the previous franchise.  They just sort of tossed a new character into the mix without telling us much about him or giving him any real depth.   And what else could they do  in a movie that 's around two hours long? Not much.

Does anybody else got a problem with this tiny guy playing Bane? Why are people excited about this guy? Because he's an "actor".  Nathan Jones would've been the perfect size for Bane. A 6'10'' body builder. All he would need is a bit of a Spanish accent to sell that Bane is half hispanic. Heck, I would've excepted Matt Morgan. I seen an article that says Tom Hardy showing his Bane physique, lol. In the picture, the guy next to him is bigger than him. And please, don't give the Bronson arguement again.

No, I want Bane to be how he is in the comics. He's not a 5'9'' English guy with tattoos. So how is Hardy perfect? If he were perfect, he'd be a foot taller and 200 pounds heavier. I am a fan of Bane. I've read Vengeance of Bane, and Knightfall and Secret Six and other comics with Bane too. So what? And I don't see this guy as Bane. He looks nothing like him. Why can't they get a guy Bane's size, and follow as much of the comics storyline as they can. He doesn't have to roar and act dumb just because you get a hulking type guy to play him. But obviously everyone here thinks you can only get one side of Bane right. Which I don't think he's gonna do right anyway. I've never seen Bane have to jump up to hit Batman in the face. You see, the point Bane was created is for Batman to be matched physically like a Killer Croc, but also have the mind of a genius. Two dangerous foes in one. So now the size and strength factor has been eliminated for the next movie. Size is irrelevant? Are you kidding me? That's part of what makes Bane. Size plus genius. Not just one or the other.
