The Daredevil Reboot Gets A Director

It's vampire movie man, David Slade.

Drowning Pool's theme song to this was totally rad, too.
Drowning Pool's theme song to this was totally rad, too.

Sharper Comic Vine maniacs will recall the news from a while back that Fox would be rebooting DAREDEVIL as a film series. Said maniacs might’ve even been wondering what was going on with it. Their lingering questions have at last been answered with this news from Deadline that British director David Slade will be helming this new on-screen adventure of the man without fear. Though his latest flick was the last TWILIGHT, Slade’s actually got something of a long association with comics movies. He directed 30 DAYS OF NIGHT and was one of the directors in the running to direct THE WOLVERINE; also, his debut film HARD CANDY is supposedly the movie that got Ellen Page cast as Kitty Pryde.

Me, myself… I liked DAREDEVIL. I think it’s unfairly maligned. I actually would’ve included it in my list of favorite Marvel flicks from a while back but I ran out of room and, frankly, I wasn’t in the mood to get into the kind of heated debate I knew would be ignited by even mentioning the flick. I know a lot of you maniacs have an ax to grind with it and I’m sure many of you talked out your fantasies about what you would’ve done differently to bring hornhead to the screen. == TEASER ==

Well, here's what you've been waiting for. I strongly doubt that anybody aside from Michael Clarke Duncan and Joe Pantoliano would come back for this, so the set’s really open and clear for you all to call some shots from your fantasy producer’s chair. What would you want to see in this one, kiddies? Something focused almost entirely on DD’s history with the Hand? A romp with his more traditional foes like the Owl, Stilt-Man and the Purple Man? Maybe something drawing from more recent storylines like DD going crazy in SHADOWLAND?

This is what I want to know.Frank Miller basically created everything people know about Daredevil. He's not a well know character. You would assume that someone who actually knows the character would sign on.That first movie was atrocious.

The original Daredevil with Afleck was good; Everybody who says it was bad couldn't give you a reason. This new one they're going to make probably won't be half as good as the original.

@jakob187: One bad movie don't make a bad director. And Frank didn't direct Robocop 3, he wrote it. Also he had to re-write his draft on it to please the studio who wanted it toned down for family.

Using Miller's run would be fine, and maybe having him as a producer or something, but having him direct in any way at all would be a complete train wreck. I'm getting flashes of The Spirit and not liking it one bit.

I actually liked Daredevil....the Director's cut that is.
The theatrical version was so....dumb. Let's put it that way. No plot, cliché storyline, Matt Murdock nails the girl, loses her, etc...
Then in the Director's cut release, there was an actual on-going story, Matt trying to defend those people in trial all the way through  the plot, and the clashes with Kingpin or Bullseye BECAUSE of that!
And he didn't even really get Elektra in that version (scene reshot, added for the butchered version in theatres). Much better feel and atmosphere overall.
I wasn't even annoyed by Ben Affleck, I was going through View Askew movies back then.

Anyway, this new reboot?
Lemme guess...a 20th Century Fox cheap lackbuster, improvised to keep the rights from reverting to Marvel, as they've done with X-men First Class and as they will with the Fantastic four too....

it scares me that the Director of Twilight is making this but then I look at how freaking awesome 30 days of night was and it fills me with hope howeer I cannot forgive him for making a Twilight movie that is the equivelant of a Russian helping Hitler in the later days of WW2

The Director's Cut version wasn't that bad. But they would have introduced the Stick character training Matt Murdock to become the Daredevil rather than himself. Instead they included Stick in the Elektra film.

pfft people judge movies way too hard, i liked the Daredevil movie, but a few people didn't and their oppinions spread, and soon everyone disliked it to go along with the flow, same thing happened with the movie the "Butterfly Effect" so i now call the underrating of a movie "the butterfly effect"

The dude who played Kingpin was great. Best thing ever. Everything else about the first Daredevil movie was "ehh" for me. It was really one of the reasons I avoided getting into his comics for a while. I was just bored most of the time. I hope this one is better.

100 percent agree with you, people don't like to focus on the acting of the movies, they just care about how close it is to the comic, but then when it is they pick straws and say the movie sucked because of the actors, I never heard a good argument for why Ben Affleck sucked at being Daredevil.  That last quote gives me chills.
"A Guardian Devil"
And I thought Michael Duncan ______ did a great job as Kingpin and I don't care if its a Reboot or Sequel and if it does have those two returning, I am down to watch it either way especially if they bring back Jennifer Garner. Whoo! She fine!

Ok so I loved Daredevil, obviously not an exact copy of the comic, but the movies arent supposed to be.  The elektra movie kinda sucked, as much as i love Jennifer Garner in the role.  Ben affleck was a lot better than i figured he would be going in and i thought he did a great job filling the tights.  It was a fun movie.  The soundtrack was also awesome, contrary to some opinions on this site.  The music was some of the best stuff on the radio at the time and had more edge than many movies are willing to do, especially ones aimed at children and nerds.  I thought Michael Clark Duncan made a great kingpin, I always hoped he would show up in a spider-flick.   The movie had feeling, it pulled you in and made you root for DD.  I never understood why it was so disliked by people.
Sure i will probably dish out the $10 or so to go see it when it comes out, but it saddens me that we will be revamping what could have been a good series.

I also really enjoyed Daredevil but I heard the Director's Cut was better, just Fox made it into whatever they wanted which for a movie like this, it can't be "spiderman".

They also tried to cram in way too much stuff into the movie just because especially with Elektra and Kingpin. I would go back to the roots of Daredevil and start there, make it about a murder mystery and spin it out of that. The thing is with most of these superhero movies, it is the villain that helps the hero be a better hero/movie.

I would leave the Kingpin out of the movie except the end, make him a behind the scene player that we never see but know of. Maybe just a small cameo at the end and we see Fisk.

The hand is an interesting idea but there isn't really a definitive "Hand" villain other than Elektra which leaves you having to make a guy up aka generic bad dude. Bullesye is the best villain to be a foil because he is an interesting character and unlike Matt, he has his complete vision and he uses it to kill.

Maybe have the Kingpin hiring Bullseye to kill off other heads of gangs to become the true Kingpin of crime? The origin story is one that we have to get through.

Here's Marvels attempt at making a dark comic book movie.  Sure the Blade films were rated R and pretty bloody, but they were still popcorn movies to an extent.  The way Batman has been done lately by Nolan, there is any reason why this movie reboot couldn't be like that either.  I always thought DD needed a reboot just because his character is personal.  Hopefully Marvel will have the balls to make it an R movie.  Test the waters and see what happens.

Because of The Spirit and Robocop 3.

As for the article, I'm glad that someone else didn't mind the movie.  I hate having to defend liking Daredevil.  It was nowhere NEAR perfect, but it was also its own thing.  It held enough of the things that made it Daredevil without being a direct frame-by-frame comic book movie.  As a movie, I think it was a perfectly average movie.  I didn't have a problem with Affleck in the role.  I didn't mind Garner.  I enjoyed Duncan's take on Fisk.  Joey Pants was fine.  It was a fine movie.

Hopefully, Slade will make a better movie though.

My biggest hope for this movie is I dont have to hear all the awful mainstream radio metal that was in the first one. The playground fight, the makeout in the rain scene, and the subway death I can almost overlook. But not the damn soundtrack.
