The Comic Vine 2013 Movie Awards - Voting

It's time to praise this year's movies! Come vote for Best Movie, Best Action Scene, Best Hero, and a whole lot more!

Welcome to the second edition of the Comic Vine Movie Awards! We know there's plenty of fantastic looking movies heading our way in the years to come, but let's take some time to reflect on just how much awesomeness was packed into 2013. We each have our favorites and now you have the opportunity to tell the world why these films deserve praise.

Keeping it limited to just comic book movies would restrict matters, so we included a few films we know the community really dug this year, too. We've created 10 categories -- ranging from best director to best movie -- and ultimately, the winner of each category will be determined by your votes. Will Marvel and DC take a majority of the awards or will one of the other films swoop in and earn extra praise? Go get your vote on, Viners!

No Caption Provided

Participating is beyond easy. Step one: click a link below. Step two: vote. Step three: repeat for the rest of the categories. Got it? Great!

Winners will be announced next Monday (12/30/13), so check back then! In the meantime, have fun voting!

@ TimeLordScience: ahh so in other words you obviously have no argument.

So like this right?:

I make post.

You read post.

You make huge counterpoint.

Re-read it AFTER I Transformers 2 did good at box office.

Decide you have no counter argument at all. Gotcha *click*

Your entire initial argument is irrelevant and invalid. You're trying to trash a good film due to "too much destruction" for your taste. Well boo hoo...lol

Gotta love the fanboys with superiority complex who have trouble with a few things.

One, other views different from your own. No wonder youre angry that mos is owning huh?

Two, I said t2 did well at the box office....personally i enjoyed the first movie. But let me guess youre one of the cult people who want to hang mike bay for he 'ruined' your childhood right? Mindless destruction?

Transformers giving fire engines everywhere a bad name??!!

But Im sure you had a great novel because as you can see majority here totally agree with you ;) lol oh wait....

Its ok, nobody likes to admit when theyre wrong. I suppose id be salty too if nobody else shared my wretched hatred for supes.

LMAO good post that was hilarious.

I feel same MOS awesome!!!!

I was writing a really long response, addressing everything point by point, but then I got to the end where you said Transformers 2 was a good movie and then deleted it all. Your argument is invalid.

@ timelordscience,

Are you kidding? Of course he does, Zod for one was adapting FASTER then Clark was on Earth within hours....so not Clark can't just pick up Zod and fly him to the moon lol. Besides, what's to stop Zod from just punching Superman and flying back to Earth killing humans even if it's a few. Superman can't be everywhere at once....

Again, origin film Superman was becoming Superman...obviously he didn't "want" to hurt people and you're assuming anyway, who's to say those buildings weren't evaculated like we saw with the daily planet?

I disagree, it was productive because it was realistic and not "cartoony or let's play nice so we don't hurt humans" hate to tell ya that doesn't exist unless you're making Superman 2 all over again "owe alien beings as powerful as Superman let's go out into the street with bats and sticks, that'll work" lol

Because that's soooo much better right?

You're wrong, if Superman didn't care about humans then he wouldn't have FOUGHT Zod...I don't think you watched the movie. He even tells people in Smallville to "go inside it's not safe" Did you forget that part? Did you forget the part where Zod was in his mind and said "No Zod, I can't be apart of this!"

Don't compare MOS to Avengers because Avengers the heroes like Captain America were already made into the character, and all he did was use his shield to protect someone from Loki's blast...big whoop. Also, destruction? ha Avengers had it not as much as MOS grant you but had it, why didn't the Avengers Thor pick up the worm thing into space huh? It destroyed buildings with tons of "people" right? You're argument is contradicting if you're trying to say "Avengers had little destruction while MOS had all destruction"

Rottentomatoes means nothing, that's ONE review and nobody takes them seriously...how about the fact that it did better then Superman Returns and was the summers best movie? Or are you going to just ignore that and cherry pick? Who takes RT seriously anymore? lol Pretty sure everyone here who saw it on CV loved it, F*#! RT they're garbage, biased site that are pro Marvel films and have rated other good movies

You missed my point why I brought up the generic disaster movie. I wasn't using it to "justify" anything, I'm saying you must hate movies like that since that's the premise of the MOVIE. Even Pacific Rim. Did you NOT see how many cities got destroyed?

Your issues are nothing more then preferences and petpeeving. MOS was a great film, no matter how much you want to try to lowball it and use "too much destruction" as an excuse for ripping it.

Why Rotten Tomatoes sucks:

They hated tons of good movies from MOS to Transformers 2, which both did great at the box office. All they are a site getting paid for their opinions which most of the time suck and/or biased. People who listen to sites like that are easily influenced and have poor self judgement. I'd rather see a movie for myself to judge, thanks.

@ timelordscience i live in nyc and have to say thats different given how the destruction wasnt in one place for one. This movie was released many years afterwards. Two, and its a movie three. Movie=fiction...What about disaster movies with a genetic plot? Usually those are politically motivated with 'global warming or clinate change' being the culprit due to people not helping etc at least mos theres a reason for it. And if supes didnt fight there would have been way more worldwide destruction let alone metropolis.

Also keep in mind superman does save people its why hes fightibg throughout the whole movie....its his hunan element and respect for life. If someone misses this then theyre missing the point of the film. Why he was sent to earth. Emotional. Both his fathers dying to save him. Emotional.

Even zods reaction at the end leaves emotion there.

Plud you must remember. This is an origin film. First superman he didnt save much

In fact it was rather dull and unlike mos where he literally saved eartg. Supes in superman one just saved lois, cali by flying back in time.

Mos set a bigger emotional picture as not just lois but the world. Handful? You mean tons of people insmallville running unside locking doors, met running for their lives? The end as well? Theres tons of emotion.oh yes because im so sure zod will agree to fight clark on the moon.

To protect eartg. Two things wrobg with that. One hardly realistic as mos showed us hence the destruction. Two hes the villian of the story who cares nothing for humans....if zod agreed to not fight in earth that would be so dumb. Why woukd he give up his only advantage?

Snyder goes for realism when he can. Thats what makes mos awesome. What you think superman 2 is realistic people running into the streets trying to fight beings they dont even understand? Lol thats just downright stupid and hardly realistic.

Superman doesn't even make the effort to fly Zod away from the city. Not at all. In fact, Superman sometimes punches him through buildings with wild abandon. I'm not saying Superman shouldn't have fought Zod, I am saying the director/writer wrote Superman in such a way that was counterproductive to what they were trying to build in his character. I'm sure you've heard hero dialogue before that goes something like "I have to try to get so and so villain away from the city so no one gets hurt!" Noticeably absent from MoS. There's no such indication Superman gives a flying **** about any individual citizen besides Lois Lane, whom he pauses to kiss in a ridiculous scene while the catastrophe is still occurring. What I meant by we only see a handful of Metropolis citizens, I wasn't referring to massive throngs of people running for their lives. I was talking about individual citizens being depicted as being saved by Superman. Remember the scene in Avengers where Captain America saves that woman in a diner I believe? And then she goes on the news later to talk about her experience? That's what Man of Steel was missing. That's true heroism. Not punching a giant space laser because daddy told you to.

And are you seriously going to point to generic disaster films as justification for Man of Steel's destruction level? Generic disaster films are a low form of cinema. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/2012/

No amount of destruction and " tons of people insmallville running unside locking doors, met running for their lives" could save a movie like 2012, why does it all of a sudden save Man of Steel?

I honestly don't see why everyone likes Pacific Rim. I was quarter of the way through it and just hated it.... The acting, yuck... The action scenes, yuck... The storyline yuck.... Now I've never read the comic so idk if people were just saying its a great adaptation of the comic book or it was a great movie because if it was choice number two... I couldn't disagree more. I didn't vote for it in any category whatsoever.

@ Timelordscience, and the only way to 'show' is via movie screen as its the only way that can done. Its being told by being shown. All movies do this. Youre treating it like a work of art on a canvas or a comic. Thats not how movies work.

And yet while I agree with the a movie doesnt need action to be good. For one that depends entirely on the kind of movie number 2 the first Superman movie yup I realize was made in the 70's it worked in different era that kind of movie would not work now 2013 people want action As well as storyou cannot tell a story with Superman fighting Zod another person as powerful as he is and not have any action in it would be very disappointing and would suck. Like I said its 2013 not 1970 and its a super hero movie that was in desperate need of a fresh start after the disaster of superman returns. That had little to no destruction and how did that turn out?;)

Yeah. You're right. The movie tells us that Superman is a hero with dialogue, but never shows us. There's hardly any on screen moments of Superman saving actual citizens. We only see a handful of Metropolis residents throughout the whole thing. Now where exactly is the emotion?

As for the action. You could put them on the moon. Which is what Clark should have done, was he actually portrayed as the hero the movie would like to make him out to be. But then Snyder/Goyer couldn't force him to make the decision they so hamfistedly wanted him to at the end. So instead they decide to soullessly show Superman fighting with Zod on Earth, to the result of a disaster greater than 20 September 11ths.

@timelordscience: It's not forced, it's told....disaster porn? That doesn't even make sense. Tons of movies have destruction cause it's umm necessary

First of all, the best forms of art show, not tell. And necessary how? The first Superman movie had nowhere near the amount of destruction that Man of Steel did. Action films do not need an entire city to be destroyed to be good.

Man of Steel gets my vote completely! Quite frankly, it was the only superhero film I cared to see during this year. I have NO interest in seeing "The Wolverine", "Kick Ass 2", or most of the others (Though I did enjoy Iron Man 3 and Pacific Rim). Man of Steel commanded my attention from the start and did not disappoint. It had its problems, but for me, it hit pretty much everything that I want to see in a Superman film (Superman FINALLY hits something and it was AWESOME) and I can't wait to see how it progresses forward.

The haters make me laugh lol. MOS having no emotion or story? right...people only die left and right but yeah, no emotion or "story" lmao...

People dying right and left =/= emotion. All of the emotion in Man of Steel is forced. The movie, especially the climax, is at best disaster porn for people who love movies like Transformers.

Do you dislike fun? D:

The only ones I would be okay with Man of Steel winning are Zod as villain, Smallville fight scene for best action scene, and most annoying and frustratingly apparent product placement.

For the record, how I voted:

  • Best Hero - Hugh Jackman as Wolverine (The Wolverine)
  • Best Villain - Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan (Star Trek Into Darkness) (I almost voted Zod)
  • Best Supporting Character - Rila Fukushima as Yukio (The Wolverine)
  • Best Visual Effects - Pacific Rim
  • Best Action Scene - Gypsy Danger vs Kaiju (Pacific Rim)
  • Best Director - James Mangold (The Wolverine)
  • Best Credits Scene - The Wolverine
  • Best Script - Star Trek Into Darkness
  • Best Animated Movie - Justice League Flashpoint Paradox
  • Best Movie - Pacific Rim

I didn't see KIck Ass 2 or 2 Guns, and I haven't seen Desolation of Smaug or Thor: The Dark World yet.

Finally i thought i was the only one who liked and cared for pacific rim.. in this site.

I liked Man of Steel a lot but it shouldn't be on top for best script, that's ridiculous.

I liked the hobbit 2 but it isn't a comic book movie I voted on it several times but I tried not to vote on it too much.

  • Best Visual Effects - Pacific Rim
  • Best Action Scene - Gypsy Danger vs Kaiju (Pacific Rim)
  • Best Director - James Mangold (The Wolverine)
  • Best Credits Scene - The Wolverine
  • Best Script - Star Trek Into Darkness
  • Best Animated Movie - Justice League Flashpoint Paradox
  • Best Movie - Pacific Rim

I didn't see KIck Ass 2 or 2 Guns, and I haven't seen Desolation of Smaug or Thor: The Dark World yet.

@jaken7: Yeah. I thought Pacific Rim was pretty bad TBH. It was best at visuals though.

@jaken7: I would say that because it's my opinion, but lets hear your opinion so I can say it sucks, just to be "reasonable".

Oh, I didn't realize you were talking about the movie itself, my comment was in response to my assumption that you were commenting on how MoS was kicking ass in this poll.

@jaken7: I've seen every movie listed except The Hobbit, 2 guns, and GI JOE.

You genuinely thought Man of Sears Steel was better than Pacific Rim? I would honestly place The Wolverine (Unrated Extended Cut) and Star Trek Into Darkness above Man of Steel as well.

If anyone is aware of Plinkett from Redlettermedia, he and his buddy that he makes a webseries called Half in the Bag with totally tear Man of Steel to shreds on their website. A great deal of fanboys should really check it out.
