THE CAPE Pilot Episode Review

First thoughts on the new NBC superhero series.

No Caption Provided
NBC is taking another stab at the superhero genre with the premiere of THE CAPE (Sunday, January 9, at 9 p.m. ET/PT with an encore Monday night). The premise of the show is simple. An honest police officer (David Lyons) is determined to fight the corruption in his city and take down the evil villain known as Chess. With corruption everywhere, our hero, Vince Farraday (Lyons) discovers the identity of Chess, only to be framed and seemingly killed in an explosion.

Luckily for our hero, he is rescued by members of a special circus. It's here that Vince meets the ringleader, Max Malini (played well by Keith David). Because this isn't an ordinary circus, Vince soon finds himself in possession of a magical/mystical cape. With this cape and basing himself on his son's favorite comic book hero (conveniently  known as The Cape), Vince is on course to fight the evil that has tarnished and turned his life upside down.

Sound cheesy? Let's be honest, most superhero descriptions do. The real question is, how was the execution of this show?
 == TEASER ==
I had low expectations before watching the pilot episode. That being said, the show wasn't as bad as I feared. The problem is, at this point, I can't say I really care for the main character's plight. He was framed, everyone thinks he died, his wife and son have to deal with everyone thinking he was bad, he can't contact them or their lives would be in danger and so on. Sorry but all that wasn't enough for me.

Where the show does get a little interesting is in the supporting cast, mainly Keith David and some of the members of the strange circus. They're not your typical superhero sidekick characters. The Cape wants to be a noble hero doing the right thing and these guys sometimes have their own agenda. If taken in the right direction, these characters could add some interesting layers to the show.

No Caption Provided
The pacing of the pilot episode was all over the place. The introduction leading up to Vince getting framed and gaining possession of the cape happens pretty quickly. He undergoes training to learn how to control the abilities of the cape but I wasn't sure how much time he spent doing so. It felt like he easily learned how to use it too fast. Other parts of the show left me waiting for the end of the episode. Essentially what is being aired is a double episode, "Pilot" and "Tarot." They flow seamlessly together but I think, at least for me, it will work better as a one-hour show instead of a two-hour presentation.
No Caption Provided
What about Summer Glau? She plays Orwell, an "investigative blogger who partners with The Cape to wage war on crime and corruption." Really. She's an investigative blogger driving a Mercedes and knows way more about the corruption in the city than even our hero. This means our hero has allies with Glau's characters and the circus (that luckily isn't a traveling one). Based on this episode, I don't really see the point of her character being part of the show (besides the obvious reason). Thankfully when she was confronting one of the bad guys, she didn't use her self-defense moves seen in her other performances. The Cape should be the one with the fancy moves, not the sidekick.

No Caption Provided
Without getting into details of his character, I was happy to see James Frain in the show. It feels like he's always popping up in something and he does a good job here, adding a little more to the show. Somehow I had forgotten that he was in it and it was a pleasant surprise. As for what role he plays in the show, I'll leave that for you to discover when you check it out for yourself.

How is the show overall? As I mentioned, it was better than I feared. There is some potential. The concept is a little cheesy--a magical cape to fight crime. I like the aspects of finding out where the cape came from and what are the true intentions of the circus rather than seeing Vince try to solve his personal mission. The name is also a little weak. There was too much of a coincidence that his son's favorite comic book happens to be The Cape and he gets rescued by Malini, who happens to have this cape sitting around gathering dust. The show does seem a little ambitious in terms of shooting locations used. I do worry that the show could end up being costly to make which will cause problems later on in production. That was one problem HEROES faced before.

No Caption Provided
Another question is how long can this show go on? Can The Cape win his war against evil? If he stops Chess and clears the name of Vince Farraday, will he come out of hiding? Will he go back to his family and the police force or try to stop any other crimes going on? Are we going to see other villains pop up? We always see more super powered villains show up once a hero takes the stage. I can't see the show focusing on The Cape's vendetta against only one villain.

At this point, I'm not ready to commit to the show. I will check out the next episode to see how the flow of a regular one is compared to this two-hour presentation. The show needs to figure out what direction it wants to take. We have the family aspect but there are darker tones in the show. Compared to No Ordinary Family, this obviously is taking the genre a little more seriously despite being about a guy with a magic cape. We don't have a lot of shows in this genre on right now and hopefully this one will overcome its kinks and fill the void that HEROES left (when it was a good show). Bottom line, I liked the show a little bit but was far from loving it. Check it out for yourself and let me know what your impressions were.

Here's the opening credits (that weren't on my screener copy).

Personally, I like The Cape better then Heroes(which to me was still nothing but a JL/X-men combined with real, random people and an "ok story" at best...but yet not as good or intriguing as Smallville.

It does have a hint of "cheesyness" to it but I like the potential and, kind of reminds me of a "if Batman was done now for TV" this is what it would be somewhat. That aside, I love Summer Glau the more I see her act.

Human Target, I hear is a decent show but never got into it. I know it's DC but have no idea what it's about at this point.

Though it definitely had some cheese to it, I thought it was well done.
Fast paced/good action - worth a watch. At least it was sorta fun.
Although it was a little derivative, like they "borrowed" alot from Batman Begins, etc.
Not sure how long it will last.

i have not watched an episode yet but though it looks good. honestly, summer glau is in it. to me she is the killer to all shows. Firefly,Dollhouse,Terminator,i think she was on Stargate Atlantis and Stargate universe, which explains why the shows are getting cut to me. so this show will probably not get back first or half way through second season... but i hope im wrong. but i will support it as long as it is on.

This is actually not a terrible show. I think the pilot ran a bit long and should have left the audience hanging. But let's face it, NBC is NOT the network for superhero shows. I actually think ABC's "No Ordinary Family" is better, but perhaps that's because it has almost an entire season head start on "The Cape". The world that "The Cape" is set in a pretty cool, but there needs to be some work done on the supporting cast. Summer Glau's character reminds me of a cross between DC's Oracle and the guy who was the brains behind Jessica Alba's character in the 90's FOX show "Dark Angel" (created by James Cameron). Anyone remember that show? NBC looks like they took a few ideas from that cult hit and ran with them.

Even though I was on a plane flight from Los Angeles to Oakland between 7:25pm and 8:45pm, I saw another airing of it on Monday, and I have to say that it might work out...

Me and my sister watched the whole two hours.

We both felt it was really rushed in spots, that the Cape as a character needs to be fleshed out a bit more (his h2h skills for an ex soldier/cop seems like they were lacking, lol) as well as the attributes of this "cape".  Keith David was awesome, and there was a bit more comedy than we expected, so that was a plus. And we didn't get a really evil, arch nemesis feel from Chess at all...

I will try out at least one more episode to see if any of these things can be improved.  If not, it may fade into my list of "almost had its"...

It Reminded me of "Birds of Prey" but if they want it to succeed they should make it less comicbook like and more like a gritty crime drama. For some reasons tv execs think comic book fans are gonna drop thier comics and watch them re-do batman and that non-comicbook fans are gonna start loving superheros for some reason. Summer Glau of course saves the show but the campiness of  fighting with a hood covering his eyes and villain not knowing it is him kinda kills it. This isn't the 40's superman putting on glasses  isn't gonna fool any of us.

Honestly? I liked it. It really felt like a comic book brought to film, and I enjoyed it. Now, this is an acquired taste, so I can't say how popular it will be or get, but I honestly did like it.

The show seemed more like an actual comic book than any I've ever seen. That probably means it's not going to do well...I don't know how that format plays on NBC.

I enjoyed it.  It was better than I thought it would be.  I still have a bitter taste in my mouth from Heroes but this was really good.  I would like to see them improve the computer graphics on the cape though (might cost to much though for the small screen).

I felt like NBC just wanted a Dark Knight tv show and couldn't get the rights to batman but whatever i liked it, wasn't great but it does show some promise in being a good tv show I give it two maybe three seasons.

Alright, having actually seen it, it's not bad. It's not great by any stretch of the imagination, but it's pretty good. I kind of like the way it takes itself completely seriously while being incredibly campy at the same time. The pacing in the first half was really confusing and fast but the second half was a lot better.

I think one thing about how this character's origin differs from the standard superhero origin bears noting. The show follows the typical story line of a hero tossed into a tragic circumstance who then assumes a new persona to fight his enemies. But this is one of the few times where the "super villains" exist BEFORE the super hero. The Cape exists because these other masked individuals tried to destroy him.

I Thought It Was Alright, I Liked That It Was More Cartoony And Less Realistic, It's Nice To See Something Other Than The Realistic Chris Nolan Style. It Had A Lot Of Batman Elements To It, The Music Was Reminiscent Of Danny Elfman's Score in "Batman" & "Batman Returns" And "Orwell" Reminded Me Of "Oracle" Kinda Funny There Names Are Very Similar. Overall I Thought It Could Have Been Better, But It Hasn't Had Time To Grow Yet, I'll Probably Watch The Rest Of The Season Just To See Where It Goes.

IMO which isn't worth much... it falls short of Heroes season 1 but a decent stretch better then No Ordinary Family that show was embarrassing to even watch.  I'll give it another shot next Monday but my expectations will stay very low.

I watched it and at first it was wayyy to cheesy for me, but then the second half made it better and I enjoyed it. I think the "circus" side of his super-hero career is what throws in a intresting spin to the story. And Chess at first seemed to ordinary but now seems to prove a bit more complex within the story line! :D

I don't really argee that she has a unique look. It maybe unique for Hollywood.  That's a shame about the ep as whole. I still haven't watched but will sometime today. I really hope it's at least entertaining. Yeah Goliath voice guy (Keith David) is always cool.

Anyway, Summer,Vinny, and Keith are the only reasons you should watch the show. I personally think it has potential.

The show was decent. if they keep it organized and they keep actors and continue to make great scrips, this show could last. All in all, this seems like the kind of show that will last for a few years and be decent. not bad, but not good. all i hope is that is doesn't get canceled or have desperate attempts to grab fans (ie claire making out with a chick on heroes)

From what I've seen so far, it's neither a hit or a miss. If NBC gives it a chance to catch on, and the writing holds up, it may last.

The plot was deceint, the characters were well thought out. Even the name, "The Cape" is clever. After watching it even the characters in the show thought the name was cheesey- and that's what made it better.

The only problem I had was with the execution of the script. At times it felt rushed, other times to slow. I liked the addition of the "Circus of Crime" they made the show worth while.

Disappointed in the "best friend," (Not Summer Glau).  The wife is a somewhat strong character- the actress would not have been my first choice. Love the son.

The villains are great- more planned out than our hero.

As for our hero. David Lyons did an okay job for someone I've never seen before. But that helped at least I could see him become the hero, another more established actor might not have pulled it of.

I'd just one of the many mindless drones out there. I liked it (not loved) and if nothing better is on I'll watch it. After all I watch No ordinary family. So give it a chance and don't judge a book by it's cover. Granted the pilot was not great but the show could take.

Doubtful considering both Marvel and DC have parent companies with their own networks -- Disney owns ABC and Warner Bros. owns the CW. "

Oh, yeah! :)
I've really been waiting for this one!

For one, unlike "Family"-something something, it wasn't dumbed down to a family friendly/silly comedies-demographic.
And I found the concept pretty..interessant.
Like a good indie super hero comic.

Summer Glaud, mmmh :'3
Screw the haters! They just love to hate, and hate to love!

Anyway, love the concept, I can't wait to see more over-the-top villains like we've only alluded to.
Anyone got a Darkman-vibe from this? Also a Journeyman-vibe, and it better nto be cancelled by the end of the season :/
