The Best LGBT Comic Book Couples

Tomorrow's landmark ASTONISHING X-MEN #51 got us thinking about some of our favorite LGBT couples in comics.

Tomorrow marks the release of ASTONISHING X-MEN #51; the landmark issue where Northstar and his boyfriend Kyle Jinadu finally get to tie the knot. The comic, written by Marjorie Liu and illustrated by artist Mike Perkins is one of the only books featuring gay marriage ever; and it's been a long time coming, since, Northstar was first introduced as a gay character by creator John Byrne back in 1974. Although Byrne had always intended for Northstar to be gay, it wasn't until writer Scott Lobdell's ALPHA FLIGHT run in issue #106 that Northstar could finally put it plainly. So it is really nice to see that Marvel's very first major, openly gay character is able to get married; and it certainly says something about Marvel's stance on marriage equality in general. Northstar's marriage to Kyle is no different than when Ororo married T'Challa, or when Jean Grey married Scott Summers. We only hope that these two get to stick together and have a happy marriage like Sue and Reed.

While this event is a milestone for Marvel as well as fans of these characters; Kyle and Norhtstar certainly aren't the only LGBT couples in comics. Over the years there have been plenty of great LGBT relationships; so in honor of the marriage in tomorrow's ASTONISHING X-MEN #51, we've decided to highlight some of our favorite LGBT couples in comics.

== TEASER ==

First up is Shatterstar and Rictor. Although creator Rob Liefeld had never intended for Shatterstar to be an openly gay character; the evolution of his relationship with Ricter over the years proves that the decision to make him an openly gay character was actually a great idea. Shatterstar, who heralds from Mojoworld, was first introduced as an asexual character devoid of any human emotions. Over time, however, and through his long exposure to being on earth, he began to grow a strong connection to Rictor, his X-Factor teammate. And although Rictor has had relationships with both male and female characters over the years; the most prominent of them all has been his commitment with Shatterstar. In fact, in X-FACTOR #49, the kiss shared by Rictor and Shatterstar was the first time two mainstream Marvel comic book characters were shown sharing a kiss on panel.

Although it was brief, Kate Kane's (Batwoman) relationship with Renee Montoya is one that fans won't forget -- primarily because when it lasted, it was so great. The two characters were similar in that they were both independent, stubborn and had the same goals; but still very unique. The dynamic of the two during 52 and DETECTIVE COMICS was interesting and exciting; and while Kate play the part of the liberated, "out" character; Renee played the opposite side of that coin -- the closeted, reserved Gotham Police Officer. Mostly though, their relationship was sweet; and at the time, the most high profile LGBT relationship at DC comics (and possibly the most high profile to date).

No Caption Provided

Probably my favorite of the bunch, however, is Hulkling's relationship with Wiccan. The two started off as teammates, but their romance really blossomed during Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung's AVENGERS: CHILDREN'S CRUSADE miniseries. The dynamic between the two characters is evident throughout this series and never feels forced. In fact, their relationship seems more sincere than a great many in comics. There is a genuine love, care and concern for one another that really makes their romance stand out. At the end of the series the two even became engaged to one another, and hopefully they two will be able to share in their very own "wedding issue."

These are only some of our favorite LGBT relationships in comics, but we know there are many others. Which ones come to mind for you? Post your favorite as well as your favorite moment shared between the two characters and let us know why you feel its so important. ASTONISHING X-MEN #51 hits comic store shelves tomorrow, Wednesday June 20th, 2012.

I would be really annoyed Apollo and Midnighter weren't included if I wasn't trying to forget their existence in the New 52.

Am I the only one that thinks it's pretty damn lazy of X-Men to feature gay characters? I mean isn't the whole mutant thing meant to be taken as a metaphor for things like homosexuality? all the legislation and persecution they take is supposed to mirror that, and then you go and make them ACTUALLY homosexual... so there's people persecuting them for being mutants, people persecuting them for being gay... that doesn't work. But I guess X-men abandoned any clever symbolism LONG ago.

Northstar was gay a really long time ago. There is nothing lazy about featuring a character who just happens to be gay.

@Redberry: maybe Lazy was the wrong word, but I didn't want to say "stupid". and don't act like I'm talking about "characters" or actual gay people. I'm talking about Writers, like the writer doesn't get that "Mutant" is a metaphor. that or they think the reader is the one who is stupid and they are spelling it out for you.

Or they just wanted to hop on the PR train and turn one of X-men books that nobody cares about into something "progressive". get a few awards from the LGBT alliance, have a bunch of news sites sing your praise.

I have always thought that the mutant metaphor was mostly regarding African Americans and the discrimination they faced. I haven't heard a lot of people making connections between gays and mutants. I'm sure both are facing discrimination, and the allegory may pertain more to gays than blacks now, but I think it was mostly about discrimination face by Black Americans back in the day. When African Americans got more exposure in the media, they start to include African American characters to their roster. I think the same is happening with gay characters.

I don't think this is something people should get upset over. There is no point in including gay characters, but there is no point they shouldn't either, and that is my point. It's depending on the writers and whether they want to write about gay characters or not. It's not lazy for stupid for them to include them. They may simply want to tell a storyline with a gay character.

Actually I wonder a little how landmark this wedding really is, as I read somewhere else Midnighter and Apollo were married over a decade ago.

Granted it's Marvel's first time, so perhaps it's landmark in the sense that its one of the Big Two that's doing it...and hyping it.

This list is so bad it made me make an account just so I could complain about it.

Because, damn, not even a mention of Apollo and Midnighter in an article commemorating a gay marriage, even if you think more than a decade of a happy marriage and parenthood don't put them up on the list?

That is either having poor knowledge of the subject you were supposed to write about or just plain ignoring them.

To be fair to Babs, "These are only some of our favorite LGBT relationships in comics, but we know there are many others. Which ones come to mind for you? "

Wildstorm has never featured heavily here, so it comes as no real surprise not to see Midnighter and Apollo mentioned. It's just a research vs. 'my favourite comics' thing. No big deal.

There are good Lesbian and Gay couples (though I think gay still covers lesbians) but are there really any Bisexual or Transgender couples in comics?

Rainmaker from Gen13 was a Lesbian/Bisexual character (may have been a 1 issue retcon). Given the teen audience of the series, it was a pretty big deal at the time ('94).

@PuckPuckPuck: Sarah Rainmaker was later firmly established as a lesbian in the Wildstorm reboot, despite earlier insinuations of being bisexual, which in my opinion was better for her as a character. I never really liked any of her relations with male characters... it just seemed off for her.

Anyone else think it strange that Batwoman and Renee Montana are the only lesbian couple on the list? I mean I'm a guy so I kinda want to see more lesbian couples. No offence, but their's too many gay couples in comic books to the point being gay in comic is cliche.

@PuckPuckPuck: The 2006 Gen13 reboot. After making a move on Caitlin and being rejected, she comes out to the rest of the team, and very clearly states she has no interest in men.

Off the top of my head; Karolina Dean, Karma (another inconsistent lesbian or bisexual case), Renee Montoya and of course Mystique and Destiny were a couple. I'm sure there are other cases.

Don't really have a favorite but these are the notable ones to me:

Notice that Northstar & Kyle are not on my list.

As for Babs not including Apollo & Midnighter, I think Puck nails it:

@PuckPuckPuck said:

On CV, Wildstorm seems to get overlooked. Also, since the revamp the Midnighter/Apollo romance has been tepid. DC has not given enough reason for people to care about Apollo & Midnighter if they didn't already care from the Wildstorm books. I'm more upset about losing their relationship losing than Lois/Clark.

Is there a rule that says if there are two gay characters on a team then they have to be a couple? Are comics preaching that gay people can't keep it in their pants around other gay people? Or is that a real life fact? Gays, please illuminate us on this.

It looks like Iceman has an Ice-boner. He should come out as the first bi-sexual character. bi-sexuals are totally unrepresented in comicbooks.

I think Wiccan and Hulking is the most natural, in the way its been written and developed over the course of there relationship. It was also something that when in the Childrens Crusade book felt very real for the characters and wasn't there for shock factor or for that added sales for the book.

Hopefully we will see more Characters like this, and maybe see the dynamic of Northstar's and Kyle's relationship as a marriage in the book too. Will we see more anti-mutant extremists attacking Kyle to get to Northstar?

How can they do this. If they engage in this controversy why not engage religion or politicts, they don't do say talk about god or politicts in public so why sexuality. Also what if a three year old picks up one of her Dad's books, sees this then has all theese questions what. How do you handle this.

Plus comics are a day in the life of a fictional person, we want to see action. How often do we see what happens behind closed doors. Also if they engage in this controversy why not engage religion or politicts, they don't do say talk about god or politicts in public so why sexuality.

1. There are kids raise by gay couples.

2. 3 years old kid won't know what the Hell they're seeing. Can you recall what your life was like when you were 3 years old?

3. It's the parents' responsibility to monitor what they want their kids see, not Marvel.

4. Even back in the day, Marvel and DC have relationship in their comics like Spiderman/Mary Jane, Superman/Lois Lane.

5. They do engage in religions and political topics. What books have you been reading? Characters have been sent to Hell back and forth, we also have characters reaffirming their faith in God, characters argue in support of their religion, Civil Right movement, and racial discrimination.

Why NOT engage religion or politics? Why are comic books (and speculative fiction generally) still treated as an intellectual ghetto despite the fact that they are often the best vehicle to approach these subjects?

Please STFU with that. In recent years they've gotten greatly depowered like soon as the millenium turned & they were gay they got downgraded. I'm not saying the power de-evolution was because of their sexuality just happened around the same time-period.

I do not understand how some people (well, more like one or two people) have been saying how a mutant can also be gay. Like someone can't be prosecuted for being two (or more) types of minorities? If this is true, all mutants should probably should just be young white men. Because we all know women or people of different ethnicities can be discriminated against.

Comic books should represent the world as a whole, and obviously the inclusion of LGBT characters is a must. How can someone not know any gay people? More and more people are reading comic books nowadays from all walks of life, and comics need to reflect that.

I'm gay. I don't expect them to release a book of a LGBT-exclusive team. It's not realistic. But nowadays with many teams at least in the double digits, how can there not be a gay team member? It doesn't make any sense how some people can still be up in arms about this.

Calling you out is not an attack, quoting you is not an attack because I didn't technically use any offensive language like you did. There is something wrong with you if you feel the need to get so defensive and attack people simply asking you a question.

God you're truly ignorant. I didn't attack you. I didn't ask you for opinion this was a thread about favorite fictional gay/lesbian/trans couples. I listed I the 1s I enjoy & why I don't like the Shatterstar & Rictor couple. I just feel that around the time they came out about their relationship they've been greatly reduced in power. Technically you're attacking me by intiating the debate by quoting me & "calling me out" so do you feel like a "big boy for attacking me". Touche my friend touche. Let it marinade.

You tell me to STFU. That is an attack, in case you don't know. Then you call me ignorant, that is another attack. Calling you out is not an attack, quoting you is not an attack because I didn't technically use any offensive language like you did. There is something wrong with you if you feel the need to get so defensive and attack people simply asking you a question.

Telling you to STFU is a direction. My definition of attack is physical confrontation. Words can't harm people only weak imbeciles. But you obviously went out of your way to start a non-verbal confrontation with me via CV. Why can't you sit at your computer & mind your business like the other people here. I didn't address you to begin with. Did I? I think not. Geeze nosey people aggravate me.

I'm tolerant so wtf I'll go along. Mystique & Destiny was revolutionary for me. I'd never seen a lesbian/bi whatever mutant couple. Heard of Hulkling & Wiccan's thing so them too. I liked Greymalkin's interaction with Anole even though technically they never dated but it helped me build up a bit of tolerance to the both of them. (I still & always will hate Northstar as a character). Shatterstar & Rictor's relationship kinda pissed me off because they were two of my favorites from X-Factor in the 90s & that just kinda blindsided me. Because Rictor & Shatterstar were two bad mamajammas then tadow "They're gay & got weaker" it's like wtf Marvel

Why would they get weaker just because they're gay?

Verbal attack is also unacceptable according to the rules. You're pretty much just flaming people for no reasons. If you don't want people post a response to you on a forum, maybe next time you should put that in your profile. I'm not a mind-reader, so I don't know if someone is gonna flame me for no reasons for just posting a reply.

@Namor1987: You need to chill out. If you can't discuss something civilly with somebody, then don't discuss it. Hostility and insults are completely uncalled for and intolerable. This is a warning.

@Redberry: Try not to bait or confront if you don't see things going well. Let a mod know and/or simply disengage from the conversation.
