Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Episode 1.12 'It Came From the Depths' Review

Leatherhead is on the loose! The Kraang are after him and the Turtles are left trying to find out what's going on!

"The enemy of my enemy is my bro."

Leave it to Michelangelo to be the wise one in the show's mid-season finale. That's right, this is the last episode before the Heroes in a Half Shell go on a winter break (fret not, they'll be back early 2013), and thankfully, it's a good one!

'It Came From the Depths' introduces the massive and fearsome Leatherhead. This rebooted take on the mutant is sporting a very similar origin story to his classic counter-part. Essentially, he's a pet baby alligator flushed into the sewers by his owner's parents. From there, he's abducted by the Kraang and taken to Dimension X for experimentation. It's a traumatizing experience and Leatherhead eventually breaks free, teleporting back to Earth and taking the Kraang's battery for the portal with him. Now the Kraang are searching for him and the Turtles are afraid of him... all of them except for Mikey, that is. He convinces the team they need to befriend him and, much to everyone's surprise, Master Splinter agrees.

First and foremost, I love the comic book style segments for origin stories. They look fantastic and play out in such a fresh, unqiue and engaging manner. Watching Leatherhead tell his origin story doesn't feel tiring or slow the pace of the show. In fact, it does the opposite. The stylized scene was one of my top moments from this episode.

And speaking of top moments: SPLINTER FIGHTS! I got goosebumps and had such a goofy smile plastered across my face as Splinter told Leatherhead to back away from his family. Luckily for us, the large enemy didn't and Splinter took him down like a boss. Odds are you'll cheer (literally or just on the inside) during this amazingly awesome fight. Leatherhead's got size and strength on his side... but that doesn't matter when you can't even touch your enemy. Man, this has me so pumped for the inevitable Shredder vs Splinter showdown!

Shredder and his crew were nowhere to be seen here, but I can live with that since the plot took a heavy focus on the Kraang and did a superb job developing the Turtles' latest ally. When the team used the battery, I was really hoping they'd teleport into Dimension X.  Unfortunately, they're still in the New York, but I'm cool with that seeing as the Shredder and Kraang plot still has so much more to offer here on Earth. Besides, there's always a chance we'll see that happen later on, right?

I'm going to sound like a broken record here, but yet again, the program delivers exceptionally good action and comedy. The script is sharp as usual and not a full minute will go by without something impressive happening. Raph's aggressive attitude was particularly funny here and Donny's consistent punishment was especially amusing.

Despite being a mid-season break, we weren't really left with a cliffhanger of any kind. I can tolerate that, though, considering this show has been top-notch with every single episode. However, one thing about the conclusion did spark my curiosity. We know the Kraang commonly refer to one another as such, although I couldn't help but feel like they were referring to a leader with that final bit of dialogue. Is it possible we'll see General Krang down the road? I certainly hope so!

The first half of season one has come to an end and I'm pleasantly surprised by how good this show is week after week. Don't shrug it off just because it's lighthearted or you're not a fan of the animation. If you do that, you're seriously missing out on a brilliant reboot that can be enjoyed by fans of all ages. It's abundantly clear the creative team is passionate about the franchise and I can't wait to see what they have in store for us in 2013.

@k4tzm4n: True that. Hopefully a real long fight with him and Shredder is forthcoming.

Splinter fighting was the highlight of this episode, it took twelve episodes, but it finally happened.

Thanks for this awesome review, Gregg! Man, I didn't know this was going to be the mid season finale! That's fine, because my favorite show, Young Justice, will be back Jan. 5th! Can't wait and I can't wait until the Turtles return next year! :)

Splinter was such a boss in this episode. Taking down Leatherhead like he was nothing really made my day.

You mean Slash?

And the giant crocodile/lizard is actually called Leatherface.

This show is still awesome. Leatherhead was awesome in the old cartoon thanks to Jim Cummings hilarious voice. This depiction of the character is interesting in this time line of this mutant universe. My favorite part about him was how he was animated while eating Michelangelo's soup. It looked like the way actual alligators chew and swallow food. When they got to his subway lair I thought they might later set up a base like in the 2nd movie. It's very cool that his story is bringing more focus on the Kraang again.

Yet again Raphael hates on Leo's show! He's still my favorite character but Space Heroes is also great. I think he was reading a Cadaver Corps comic in the previous episode which I assume is like G I Joe but with zombies. Either way I would like both of those things. All the turtles got some good exposure but the real highlight was Splinter fighting. I feel like we still haven't seen an episode with more focus on Leonardo but every episode is good nonetheless. I can't wait to see more.

Love this show and the comic. I have been a turtles fan since I was 5 in the late 80s and have read or watched ever incarnation. Until now few have lived up to the original comic series, but this show and the IDW comic have become 2 favorite versions, I would even go as far to say the current comic is better than the original. (I know, blasphemous right!)

This was my favorite episode so far. I love leatherhead. And Splinter. "There is no greater monster than a lack of Compassion…" *looks at leatherhead… "My mistake…". Cracked me up.

Its funny, No matter how extreme Leatherhead's blood rage gets, He was smart enough to know that a fight with Splinter just wasn't worth it.

I'm glad they made waiting to see Splinter in action worth it. It wasn't overly dramatic and it was rather impressive. Splinter vs Shredder will hopefully not disappoint either. If it happens.

I thought Leatherhead was okay. My initial impression was that he is one dimensional (getting physically angry just because of a trigger word), but I see room for his character to grow.

The only thing I don't like is that a lot of the plot progression seems to depend on Mikey's ignorance or carelessness. The writers should have mixed it up more.

Also, cliffhangers suck. I think they left it off at a good resting point.
