TEEN TITANS #4 Lays Out the Future of the Team

With the team finally together, we get to see who will get along with who and which members are ready to tear each other's heads off.

It's been four months since DC launched 'The New 52.' Some things have stayed the same and others have seen some pretty drastic changes. We've been seeing images of the 'new' Teen Titans for a while now but they haven't been officially together...until now.

This isn't the Teen Titans you know from before. Their reason for being together is starting out of necessity. Metahuman teens are being hunted by a mysterious organization known as N.O.W.H.E.R.E. and we've seen them almost get the upper hand on even Tim Drake in the first issue. Superboy started out as a project run by the organization and in his own title, he has decided to work for them, not having any place else to go and not fully understanding the world.

No Caption Provided

With last week's TEEN TITANS #4, the gathered teens made a decision. When Superboy managed to track down Wonder Girl and the fight was broadcast on the news, a new incarnation of the Teen Titans was born. This issue also gives us a great idea what the team dynamic will be like in the coming issues. Be sure to check out the fun-filled issue (reviewed here) and be aware that there will be some spoilers below.

== TEASER ==
No Caption Provided

You have to have some drama in order to spice things up. Not everyone gets along or likes each other. That's how real life is. People often have to work together even if they don't like each other. And that's what we're seeing here.

Superboy and Wonder Girl

No Caption Provided

Previously, these two seemed meant for each other. It was young love between the two members. When Superboy died, Cassie was hit hard.

When Conner managed to come back (because we're talking comic books here), they rekindled their relationship. Unfortunately they started drifted apart.

Now that things have a soft reset, is there a future for these two? The fact that Superboy is hunting her down for N.O.W.H.E.R.E. isn't going to win him any points with her. He is new to the world in general but does make note how attractive she is. He even tries asking if she'd be willing to work with him in N.O.W.H.E.R.E.

As before, there's also Cassie and Tim to consider. If you've been reading the first few issues carefully, you can see there seems to be something almost brewing there beneath the surface. Superboy is supposed to eventually join the team. Are we going to see a love triangle develop?

Skitter

No Caption Provided

With a name like Skitter and the ability to turn into a bug-like creature, it's no wonder she's going to be the angry one on the team. You can't blame her. It's so much that she's angry, you could also say she's rather upset. Each time she sleeps and a cocoon is formed around her, she feels she loses a little more of her humanity. It's possible, if she can't get a better grip on her powers, she could get stuck in her other form.

Skitter is a great example that not all superpowered characters are thrilled to have powers. They don't always lead to a great and perfect life. Hopefully with Tim in control of the team, if Skitter sticks around, they'll figure out some way to help her control her powers better.

Bunker and Solstice

No Caption Provided

The entire team won't be filled with doom and gloom. We've already seen Miguel as happy with life as can be. Reading his happiness is almost infectious. He has completely accepted his fate and can't help but try to spread the cheer with others. He also tends to talk a lot when nervous so you know he's going to be getting the the nerves of some of his teammates.

Solstice is another who has completely accepted what life throws at her. While in N.O.W.H.E.R.E.'s custody, they experimented on her but she is okay with everything and feels everything happens for a reason. We should soon be getting some happiness overload when these two are together and that may not necessarily be a bad thing.

Red Robin

No Caption Provided

Tim is trying his best to channel his inner Batman. He wasn't looking to create a new team but when teens were getting taken by a clandestine organization and came knocking on his door (actually they didn't even bother to knock), he had no choice. He knew he'd need help but has decided not to go to Batman. Locating the others, he knows there's strength in numbers.

Kid Flash

No Caption Provided

We have Bunker and Solstice's happiness to get on teammates' nerves and we also have Kid Flash. Bart has been living up to his Impluse name and often does things without thinking them over. We may have seen Tim, Bart and Conner the best of friends before but now we get to see how their friendship will develop, if they don't tear each other apart first.

The series may be a little on the dark side with the teens being on the run and threatened at every corner but Bart adds the humor that is slowly filling up this book. Again, we can't have a team sitting around holding hands and getting along all the time. Life doesn't work that way and it could be a little boring to read if that's the way it was. The scenes between Tim and Bart were pretty much worth the price of admission.

We also get a little update on his background and if it's still possible he has a connection to Barry Allen.

Another member?

No Caption Provided

Superboy hasn't really joined yet and we can't say for certain when exactly he will. Those with a keen eye and knowledge of past characters may have caught the appearance of another character that's been...hiding in plain site the past few issues. The addition of this character as a member could make life easier for the Titans in a certain regard. We'll have to wait and see how that plays out.

This may not be the Teen Titans you were expecting but they are shaping up to be an entertaining incarnation. How long will they be on the run from N.O.W.H.E.R.E. remains to be seen. Hopefully we'll see them go up against other threats but for now, the team is shaping up rather nicely.

I like Solstice. It's a really nice change of pace for me to see a comic hero who is determined to keep a positive attitude.

I am so sick of teenage angst being all over the place, so Solstice is a minty breath of fresh air.

"plain site" << lol!

What makes you think it's another teammate? What if it's an adversary?

New 52 Teen Titans is awesome!

Agree with you their LordRequiem. Superboy's current look is definitely better than his previous versions first two and fits better with his kryptonian heritage than just a t-shirt and jeans. The fact that all the teaser images have him in a bad biker look seems to mean the armor look probably won't be permanent. Sad.

I'm still having trouble getting really into this book for two reasons. 1) the design of the characters still feels a bit too 90's and overly complicated for some like Red Robin. I preferred Tim's RR look pre-revamp. 2) the entire "new 52" universe is very disconnected. While the Bat titles are a bit connected as well as this series to Superboy, it feels like each series is taking place in its own universe with only the barest threads of connection between them. I mean, how does Tim know and care to do anything about N.O.W.H.E.R.E and yet Batman (or any of the adult superheroes) seem to have no care towards their activities? I can go further into the universe (like how Stormwatches activies could not really be hidden from the entire planet let alone the Justice League and yet the world seems unaware of their existence, etc.....). I had some hope that a slim down of the characters in DC titles to simplify things for readers would also mean establishing a more connected world and superhero community (which I think DC was doing better and better since Identity Crisis) rather than seemingly unconnected stories and events.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who caught the appearance of Danny the Street. From a tactical perspective, he could be a great way for the team to have a 'home base' and still be constantly on the run. Althought he's a WEIRD choice for the Teen Titans. I wish there was a Doom Patrol in the new 52.

@ArturoCalaKayVee: Danny the Street, the mysterious road that appeared in the middle of nowhere and connected to Red Robin's penthouse room.

@sora_thekey: I'd be pissed if they turned Danny the Street into a villain.

I don't read this, so perhaps what I'm saying won't be possible for some reason, but since Danny the Street is there, does that mean Crazy Jane might show up too?

In reference to that, a future issue spoiler, I'd prefer Crazy Jane on the TT rather than Raven being stuck on the team AGAIN

The rason the most of the New 52 books feel disconnected is because DC are trying to establish these characters on there own post-Flashpoint. Having Superman, Batman or Wonder Woman bail them out every five minuets would hinder that. it's there story, they need to do this on there own. Also Lobdell said Superboys red and black was just going to be a place holder while he was in NOWHERE custody but now that it's growing on him he's deciding to make it permanent.

I just checked out Danny The Street as I've never heard of him before. He's a transvestite sentient street? That's friggin amazing! Also it said he was a target of the original "Men from N.O.W.E.R.E" so it totally makes sense to have him with the titans right now.

Teen Titans is okay. It's not the best teen title on the market but it's not the worst either.

Wonder Girls costume is legit terrible. It's seriously freaking ugly.

Danny the Street? Wow, who knew?

Anyway I hate when an enemy turns into an ally in the first arc. I don't want Superboy to join the team right away, he's working for their enemies. If he leaves NOWHERE the team shouldn't immediately accept him, they need to mistrust him for a while and then eventually allow him to join up but even then keep an eye on him in case it's a trick and he's setting them up.

@ltbrd: How Stormwatch stays secret has already been mentioned in the book. The abilities of the Projectionist (media control) and Martian Manhunter (telepathy) lets them operate in secret when stealth is impossible. But it's still interesting that they don't intervene in JLI (villain is alien called Peraxxus). The interconnections will start happening more often after the first arcs are through.

I love this book. That said they either need to amp up Skitters angry/depression/hates-her-powers or tone down Bunkers endless optimism. It is just to much when everyone is trying to be serious and he ruins the "atmosphere", maybe he just needs a better sense of humor...

I keep going back and forth on whether or not I care about this book. Ive never really cared for the Teen Titans in general, not because the book.has necessarily been bad, but a team of sidekicks just doesn't hold a ton of appeal to me. That said, this seems to be the only way to get my Tim Drake on, so I might have to get more interested.

I was a somewhat reader of the original series and really this book isn't my thing I prefer the old team. my opinion is that this book sucks. And yes this is my opinion and it doesn't have to be yours. I'm not here to change anyone else's opinion because I respect what people like and dislike.

but yeah.

Don't like this series at all.

If the Titans have Danny, that means Flex Mentallo may show up, and be the character aware of retcons because that is what he does.

I know next to nothing about the more obscure DC/Vertigo characters, so this is quite literally the first I'm ever hearing of Danny the Street. Then I look him up here and read this:

"For many years, Danny has travelled the planet. He is a sentient street, able to place himself anywhere around the world. Danny lets the stragglers, the people tossed out by humanity, have a place of respite. He entertains them with drag shows, and various shops. Danny is a transvestite, and expresses himself by putting pink, frilly awnings or curtains on gun stores and the like."

That is the most hilariously awesome paragraph I have ever read.

Honestly I hadn't heard of him either before his appearance...but my reaction was the opposite, and it was given up on when I found out Lobdell was going to 'do' a Morrison creation. (Not sure what Morrison does to make something like this up, but I am pretty sure its unique)

I just can't get myself to care about this team of Titans. Other than Tim, Bart, Connor, and Cassie. But they just don't feel like the characters i knew and loved. And Skitter, Bunker, and "Solstice" just do nothing for me but make my eyes hurt and bother me that they exist.

And there's my usual complaints about the creative team and their lack of talent.
