Suspiciously-Similar Heroes

Hey, you two kind of look alike...

No Caption Provided

So people have been jawin’ lately… arguing over who’s cribbing whose playbook.   Does Necrosha facebite Blackest Night? Does Brightest Day copy Heroic Age?   I don't think either is the case, though I'm surprised nobody’s brought up the Lethal Legion storyline from the Busiek/Perez AVENGERS run where undead members come back to attack the living -- with their original personalities in tact.

Troy Brownfield’s answered the whole question rather cogently already, so I’m not going to dig it up for more (it’s not a Black Lantern!).   I will point out, however,  that questions of “cross-polination” in the big bee hive that is the comics business are hardly new.

 Aqua-Mariner
 Aqua-Mariner

In the Golden Age, of course, the Sub-Mariner was followed by Aqua Man.   Both were princes of Atlantis, though their M.O.’s couldn’t have differed more.   Aqua Man was a super-hero who could talk to creatures of the sea, while Namor was a street talking, angry young fish-man who terrorized humanity (being the first in Marvel’s long tradition of anti-heroes like the HulkWolverine and Punisher).

 The Whiz
 The Whiz
Around that time, as well, you had the Flash followed by the Whizzer.   Both were super-speedsters and both borrowed their winged helmets and inspiration from the original super-speedster, Hermes/Mercury.   Needless to say, the Flash proved far more successful, while the Whizzer’s had difficulty… shaking off the associations his name and color scheme have with urination.

 X-Patrol
 X-Patrol

This may less obvious now, but in the Silver Age, there was the Doom Patrol and the X-Men.   Both were teams composed of freaks, both had powers with as many limitations as advantages and both were led by paralyzed, wheelchair bound geniuses.

 Bat-Thing
 Bat-Thing
In the Bronze Age, Swamp Thing and Man Thing debuted around the same time.   Both were scientists turned into hulking plant monsters, both enjoyed horrific adventures in the swamp, both were "things."   The interesting punchline is that they were both actually independent tributes to a Golden Age character called THE HEAP.

Marvel and DC are obviously aware of these similarities and have a good sense of humor about it.  You'll notice that all the pictures above are from the Amalgam crossover from the 90s, which feature combinations of all these characters. Now,   this is only just scratching the surface, so I’m going to dump some kerosene on this fire and put the challenge out to YOU to find some more!

Wundarr the sky-being is the first MARVEL ripoff of Superman.  He appears in an old issue of "Adventure Into Fear" #17 staring Man-thing.  Wen you read it, the origin of Wundarr is the origin of Superman!

Majestic is even more nutty, especially during World's End. He starts kidnapping random schlubs and brings them to Hawaii, where he's recreating Khera. Then he's stealing tech from his former friends, and wants some of them to go back with him because of their "enhanced gene pool". He pretty much does whatever he wants at this point.

@terjitt: A funny fact is that newest Dr, Syn appearance i know wasn`t in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen vol 2 it was in a Disney comic about Jack Sparrow, Jack was capured by the guard and Dr, Syn saved him, he also remarked that he was a friend of his father. that was cool :)

Do you mean DC Scarecrow and that other Scarecrow as in the Reverend Doctor Christopher Syn? because the Syn version is from a book dating from 1915 the DC  Scarcrow is from 1941

Who knows? It will be interesting to see what route they take with this new line. The popularity of Brubaker's work would seem to suggest they'll go with neo noir, but we shall see.
edit: They're calling it Neo Noir on the solicits/promo material
I'm a fan of the original wildstorm run, from wildc.a.t.s all the way up to Sleeper.. I just prefer the universe over DC and Marvel as they currently stand. I have yet to look into the reboot of the reboot.

I thought Denny Colt would have had a poor night's sleep after that god awful movie...

Majestic is Superman on steroids and without the moral limitations. The creators/writers admitted as much.

The Ellis/Hitch arc was great, and was one of the first things that got me into comics. The Millar/Quitely arc was more ambitious but turned me off entirely.

I never thought of Black Canary as a noir hero. And is this a noir or neo-noir interpretation?

Ah yes of course, I hadn't realised the Elijah Snow connection, and I would add the Shadow to the Dark Millionaire..i think thats the most direct link.
I was thinking more specifically on Jenny, and I have no idea either.

Rather proves my point though..its not what you do, but how you do it.
Ellis being the case in point.

I'm looking forward to seeing what DC does with it's proposed 'Pulp' line and Brubaker's Incognito continuing.

@Deadeyeduck:  Most of them are homages to heroes from adventure/pulp stories.

Lord Blackstock = Tarzan
Axel Brass = Doc Savage
Dark Millionaire = Zorro, Lone Ranger, the Phantom, the vigilante characters that inspired Batman
Elijah Snow = the protagonists of film noirs and hardboiled detective stories
Gaia Rothstein = Swamp Thing, the intermediary between nature and man
Hark = not sure, really familiar though

Jenny Sparks and her later incarnations have none, as far as I know.

I actually said logical conclusion as opposed to extreme versions, but i get your point.
I couldn't think of a direct analogue at the time for Jenny Sparks in the same notion as the others...and I honestly didn't know there was precedence regarding the Century Babies (smacks head against wall for calling them Millennium babies)

" @castleking:  You do realise Midnighter originally was created as a commentary on Batman and how ridiculous he had become? ...The whole point of the Authority was to take the standard superhero archetypes and take them to their logical conclusion. So of course Midnighter and Apollo are Batman and Superman. Thats the point. However calling him garbage is a matter of opinion.  Everything is ripped off from something else...those that develop their own personalities stay, those that don't are left behind.  I mean come on, its much more blatant than just characters: Books of Magic - Harry Potter Gotham Central - Powers JLA - Avengers  in the end, its all the same thing. It's just how it's done thats important. "

I feel that may be true for Midnighter and Apollo (except for very key character traits), but who are the other parallels?
