Superman fights the 100 Minute War!

Super-storyline stemming from free Comic Book Day.

Things only get faster as the years go by.

10 years ago, it would’ve taken you a lot longer to view this article - - with all its fancy hi-res image files - - on your dial-up connection.

So too, has conflict accelerated. In the 14 and 15 centuries, France was beset by the Hundred Years War. Now, in 2010, Superman’s got the upgrade - - THE HUNDRED MINUTE WAR.

It’s a month-long storyline spinning out of THE WAR OF THE SUPERMEN #0, DC’s contribution to this year’s Free Comic Book Day.   Each episode’s going to detail a 25-minute segment of the conflict.

Battlefield generals are writers James Robinson & Sterling Gates,  Aaron Lopresti, Jamal Igle & Eduardo Pansica and cover-artist Eddy Barrows, whose in-progress work you’ll witness throughout this.

I’ll grant, it’s a killer concept, detailing a galactic super-war fought by hundreds of super-people at ramped-up super-speeds.

Pouring some nitro into the hype machine, Superman group editor Matt Idelson had some rhetorical questions, and one rhetorical answer, on DC’s official Source blog…

With Superman caught between the war-hungry factions of General Zod and General Lane, could any victory be much more than Pyrrhic? What side will Supergirl take, and could it find her at odds with her cousin? Where are the other “Supermen” of the DCU, like Steel and Superboy? Right in the thick of it, is the answer.

If you hadn’t guessed from my interviews and contest videos, little Tommy P was a big pro wrestling fan back in the day. I don’t recall if it was Wrestlemania or Summer Slam, but the hour-long Iron Man match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels was one of the bigger bouts that made an impression on me. I can’t help thinking of this as the comics equivalent. Who will win the Heavyweight Belt… er, I mean… rule the fate of the Earth?!

Hope it's all been worth it
I kinda want to see Superman, Supergirl, Krypto, Zod, and Superboy (if he counts) to be the only Kryptonians left

Well I'm assuming it's 100 earth minutes, which at Superman's speed is really, really long.

It's well known that Superman can outrun a bullet (so let's put him someone around 1200 m/s, only about 0.0004% of the speed of light) during a war that lasts for 6000 seconds (100 minutes x60). That means that during this entire war Superman could travel 7 million meters (~4300 miles if you prefer). That'd take someone driving 60 mph about 72 hours to travel this distance (that's without any pee breaks!) So although this is totally bad physics; it'd be like the 100 minute war lasted for 72 hours (3 days minus pee breaks)

I like this idea a lot.
I haven't read a Superman book in a while so I'm not exactly sure what's going on besides the occasional reference in other books and preview pages from the DC Source
but I will probably pick this up

What a great concept to end all of this Earth vs. New Krypton action over the past two years.  As a long-time reader of Superman books, I haven't been as into the stories since Superman left his book and was featured in the WONK mini-series.  However WONK did end well--although I thought it could've been condenced from 12 issues to 6 or 7.  War of the Supermen brings us to the culmination of the politics and deceptions of the past year or so And I am so looking forward to it.

I like this idea but still some fans might be annoyed the arc that has been building since 2008 is going to last one month. I have checked out the Superman books and I think they have been fine but it sucks that the sells have dropped but hopefully this one month stunt will invite some people back or new people. I wonder which other titles will be involved? Maybe Outsiders.
