Star Wars VII Begins Filming in May

The new Star Wars film is just a few short months away from production.

Disney and Lucasfilm announced today that the newest Star Wars film, Episode VII, will begin principal photography in May of 2014. Yes, May of 2014. The film, which is being directed by J.J. Abrams, start filming at London's historic Pinewood Studios.

The film will take place 30 years after Return of the Jedi, and it will star three new leads, as well as feature some very familiar faces. However, very little is known about this new film or who is going to be cast, aside from the daily, unproven rumors that circulate the Internet.

Will this film be more centered around Han, Leia, and Luke than originally thought? At least the 30 year gap will allow the original cast to revise their original roles.

Believe it or not, Star Wars: Episode VII is slated to hit theaters on December 18th, 2015.

Here's's full press release:

Disney and Lucasfilm are excited to announce that principal photography on Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, will commence May 2014, and will be based at London's historic Pinewood Studios.

This will be the first Star Wars film to start shooting in the month of May. Lucasfilm has documented the first day of principal photography for every installment of the Star Wars saga:

  • March 22, 1976 -- The first day of principal photography in Tozeur, Tunisia, for Star Wars. A crew of 130 ventures into the desert in 42 trucks and cars, including eight army trucks full of equipment. The first shot was completed at 9:35 a.m.
  • March 5, 1979 -- The first day of principal photography in Finse, Norway, for The Empire Strikes Back. The crew endures the subzero temperatures, frostbite, heavy winds, and avalanches to pull off the first shot within 65 minutes of setup.
  • January 11, 1982 -- The first day of principal photography at EMI Elstree Studios outside of London for Return of the Jedi. Although inside a studio, the set must weather a sandstorm in a scene that would ultimately be cut from the film.
  • June 26, 1997 -- The first day of principal photography at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England, for The Phantom Menace. Ending a long absence from the director's chair, George Lucas shoots a sequence in a bluescreen-lined set with actors Ian McDiarmid and Ray Park.
  • June 26, 2000 -- The first day of principal photography for Attack of the Clones at Fox Studios Australia. In their new home Down Under, the production crew once again photographs actor Ian McDiarmid three years to the day after Episode I started shooting.
  • June 30, 2003 -- The first day of principal photography for Revenge of the Sith at Fox Studios Australia. The first scenes shot feature Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, respectively, along with R2-D2.

It has also been confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII is set about 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and will star a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces. No further details on casting or plot are available at this time.

Star Wars: Episode VII will release in theaters on December 18, 2015.

So far with all the rewrites and stuff this film sounds like a mess.

Disney is on fire today.

Should be interesting. After the prequels, the lack of George Lucas writing and directing gives me some hope. But after the prequels, my expectations are also rock bottom.

What I want to know is how much research I should do on the Expanded Universe

What I want to know is how much research I should do on the Expanded Universe

None. Though some books from it are quite good, but I believe Lucasfilm has said they are ignoring postEp VI EU.

If you are interested, the novels Darth Plagueis, the Darth Bane trilogy, the Thrawn Trilogy, and Dark Empire are all fun, enjoyable Star Wars adventures. I also recommend the Tales of the Old Republic Series of comics, as it was very enjoyable.

What I want to know is how much research I should do on the Expanded Universe

Probably none. Word is they're ignoring most of it for a new story. What little they may put in should be introduced well enough for people unfamiliar with the expanded stuff. Otherwise, the writer and director are failing as storytellers.

Hopefully this very light piece of information is the first of a lot more news to come. I really want to see some cast information, or at least the name of the movie.

If J.J. Abrams does this right he will become a God (but not really)

The original cast is going to reprise their roles. I hope they won't be revising their roles...'cause haven't there been enough changes to Star Wars thanks to the prequels?

Super excited about everything Star Wars but I am getting slightly impatient waiting for casting news. With filming starting so soon they have to make some concrete announcements soon

Still not excited. Star Wars should be placed in a box and only unleashed when a Pandora decides its ready for it.

I have some hope for this. I mean, it can't be worse than the new trilogy or the edits Lucas made in his re-releases.

RotJ came out just over 30 years ago...does this imply that Hamill, Ford, Fisher, and Williams can reprise their roles with "real" time aging? I hope so.

@lyrafay: The hell does that even mean? lol

Set around the same tired characters with 3 more leads and I'm sure the same droids and ships and ALL the familiar faces. So instead of weaving a huge tapestry of sci-fi (or is that syfy) goodness we will continue to see just how small this galaxy really is.

No thanks I'll keep the expanded U.
