Star Wars Prevents Smoking, Drunk Driving and Whooping Cough?

A look at some PSA's from a galaxy far, far away...

A look at some PSA's from a galaxy far, far away...

If you grew up in the last decade then chances are that you probably missed the era of the Joe Camel who was an advertising gimmick for Camel cigarettes back in the 80's and 90's, but was banned by the company in July of 1997 after years of being considered controversial and targeted toward children. In August of 1986, the government placed a ban on smokeless tobacco ads airing on television, which might explain why there are so few PSA's targeted toward the prevention of cigarette smoking on television today. However, if you lived through the 80's, which I am sure  lot of you did, then chances are you probably witnessed a lot of Public Service Announcements targeted toward the prevention of smoking, which aired on television as no doubt a way to combat the overall message of tobacco advertisers.  The guys over at Sci Fi stumbled across a Star Wars PSA from back in 1981 featuring C3PO and R2D2 which I could not resist posting for you guys, and you can watch below.

Do you think that Public Service Announcements influence people at all? Do you think they influence people moreso when they feature iconic characters say from Star Wars, for example? Do you remember seeing other Public Service Announcements featuring characters you may have grown up with? Do you think they influenced your decisions ?

Here are a few more Star Wars PSA's for you guys to enjoy.

R2D2 YOU FOUND A CIGERITE

If R2 thinks smoking it cool, then it's cool by me too... *kicks back & lights up* ;)

It's kinda hard as a little kid to understand that smoking is bad for you when a robot is doing it.  What would be more effective is if you saw the Emperor light up.  Then you know it's bad.

I'm sorry, I almost lost it when he started giving his message directly to the screen.  And why would he care if R2 smoked?  Does he have lungs that I failed to notice up till now?  How's he puffin?  He can't even breathe!

This was great.

@Babs:  Babsy, the Empreror already lit up on a regular basis.  You think his voice got THAT hoarse out of nowhere?  duh

I recall seeing all of these at the time they originally aired... I believe PSA's like this don't influence, but reinforce decisions we've already intellectually made, but haven't verbalized....

that's one to grow on.

Exactly!  As a kid, what was cooler... Luke's all-American squeaky clean perfected voice, or... Darth Vader's asthmatic inhalation & the Emperor's raspy commands?  The Sith only accepts the cool smoking kids, because they'll develop raspy voices in future ;)

Seriously! Palpatine would so make me want to smoke way more than R2-D2. *Puff puff*...can I shoot lightening from my hands now?

did anyone else notice that they misspelled "Galaxy" in the anti-smoking one?  i guess that's why they didn't make a PSA about being illiterate.  :P

Funny stuff. I was debating on whether I should start smoking or not. But after seeing this, I've decided not to. Good job R2! Deathsticks are bad news.

Deathsticks. Great. Haha.

Wow, I never thought this'd happen!

Those are pretty cool, but R2 doesn't have lungs or a heart. Yet he can touch the hearts of children everywhere. I'd be more concerned what that would do to the filters on his cooling systems.
These commercials really stand in contrast to some of the really old TV commercials that used to air. Ones in which had Fred and Barney from the Flintstones cartoon advertising for the Winston brand cigarettes.

I'd post the video here, but it's rather forceful how they push smoking. Just look it up on youtube. It's easy to find. It really shows you a change in times how smoking used to be advertised so openly in those days in children's programs. It was pushed then about as forcefully as bottled water is now.

And, Palpatine is the only person that could talk, without assistance, with a whole in his throat.  He wore those cloaks for a reason you know.

How weird, but I can see this being effective on young kids.
