Star Trek 2: Time Travel? New Director? Kahn? What's Going On?

What will the next Trek movie have in store for us?

With the release of J.J. Abrams' Star Trek this week, there's been a lot of talk about the next one.  At this point in the game, there really isn't any concrete information but there is some ideas being thrown about.  Sci Fi Wire dished out some information from Abrams himself.

The next Star Trek movie most likely won't be in theaters until 2012.  Producer/writer Damon Lindelof thinks there's a small chance it could happen sooner (in 2011) if they get to writing it now.

What about the story?  There's talk about time shifts (perhaps similar to LOST?).

"One of the things we like to do as storytellers is drop you in the middle of something," Lindelof said. "And the question that you're asking yourself is: Where am I in relation to the last time I left these guys? Could this be something that predated even, perhaps, some of the adventures that they had in the first movie? Does it happen five years later? Is it happening two seconds later? Who knows? So we're not going to tell you."

 Could this be Kahn?
 Could this be Kahn?
Will we see Kahn?  There's been hints that they may introduce the characters but they are not committed to that at this point.  Coming Soon mentioned that they 'heard' that Nestor Carbonell (Richard Alpert on LOST, Batmanuel on The Tick) was being considered (even though it's not definite Kahn will appear).

Apparently Spock and Uhura will see more of their relationship explored.

What about the speculation that Abrams might not direct?  Abrams says he has every intention of directing it.  But since there's no script, it doesn't make sense to talk about directing it right now.  He says "in theory," he'll be available.

What would you want most in the next Star Trek movie?

On an unrelated note: here's the R2-D2 cameo from the first film if you haven't already seen it:

I have to admit I was on the fence about J.J. Abrams directing Star Trek but I liked it waaay better than I thought at the time. Enjoyed it more than Transformers and G.I. Joe. I'll wait until Star Trek 2 comes out to form any opinions about it.

How about Asif Monvi from The Daily Show as Khan? I'd kinda like to see something else before Klingons or Khan. Like say a visit to the planet formed by the gangster era!

I think someone about Chris Pine's age should play Khan, and he also has to be foreign (or at least look it). After all, Khan is a Sikh. Perhaps he could be a beginner at being a captain, like Kirk. Even though he's not a proper actor and not the age I reckomended, M. Night Shyamalan could be a good Khan.

Nestor Carbonell would be a perfect choice for Kahn since he looks like a young Ricardo Montlbahn.

@Decept-O: It was real. It was an "Easter Egg" put in by ILM.  There was mention of it before but no one found it until recently. Gizmodo found it.

I've yet to see the other Star Trek movie. I'm waiting for DVD, but I have heard some good things about it. Kahn could be a nice addition to the series.

I had no idea there was an R2D2  "cameo" in Star Trek.  Is that for real?  Where did you find it?  Unless this is something some dweeb posted on the Internet, claiming it to be "true" which is par for the course.  Guess I missed it IF it did show up because it looks rather quick.

Not really news, but I do look forward to the next one, whatever it will be.  Provided Uhura gets nekkid............
