Spotlight On: RED SHE-HULK

With RED SHE-HULK #66 in stores tomorrow, we wanted to shed a little light on a series before its cancelation.

Another one bites the dust," as they say, or will bite the dust come July when the final issue of Jeff Parker's RED SHE-HULK will hit stores, concluding the character's ongoing series with RED SHE-HULK #67 and ending it with the current ongoing story titled 'Route 616.' With RED SHE-HULK's penultimate issue in stores tomorrow (June 5th), we started to think about how much we are going to miss her in her very own book, and we wanted not only to give the title its proper farewell, but we also wanted highlight the major changes the character has endured in the mere ten issues since her series first launched in December, 2012.

No Caption Provided

Rather than giving the character her own ongoing series, Marvel opted to allow the character to take over the previous book that was being written by Parker, HULK, which starred Thunderbolt Ross. This was probably a good move on Marvel's part because the sales of Parker's HULK series were generally pretty stable, so testing how well a Red She-Hulk solo series would do by having her take over an already stable book (in terms of sales) was probably a good business decision. And it was also convenient. The two characters (Betty and Thunderbolt Ross) have a connection that dates back to when Betty was first created in 1962 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Who better to take over Thunderbolt Ross' series than his very own daughter? The fact that Betty was the one to take over this particular title was actually a really good thing -- it made a lot of sense.

No Caption Provided

The series has also been, consistently, a very good one. Most readers who are big fans of the Hulk and Red Hulk are generally looking for action, and there was more than enough action in this series to quench the appetite of anyone looking for that. Yet, RED SHE-HULK wasn't only action packed: it was also a story that had purpose. It is a series that depicted a really strong and very independent female character that was sort of isolated from other characters in the Marvel universe. Although we did see the appearance of some of the Avengers team (like Captain Marvel, Iron Man and Captain America), generally this title was a lot more introspective in the sense that it explored Red She-Hulk's identity and the way that she copes with not only being Red She-Hulk, but also with the fact that her identity has been compromised. The story is told through the lens of Aaron Stack, also known as the Machine Man who was originally asked to take down Red She Hulk by Captain America. As the story moves forward, Red She-Hulk teams up with Machine Man to destroy the Echelon Super-Soldier Program. Together, the two embark on a journey on the run from many organizations as they seek to find more answers to their dilemma. The result is a story that is good and interesting and explores Betty from a different perspective: through the eyes of Machine Man.

No Caption Provided

One of the great things about this series was the fact that Parker took a character that had often been used as a plot device and gave her a place of her own to be her own person. Looking at Betty Ross's history as a character, she was more often used as a way to further Bruce Banner's story more than anything. In general, most of the things that happened to Betty happened because creative teams were trying to illicit a response from Bruce's character. When she became the Harpy, for example, it was more about what the effects of that were on Bruce Banner than being about Betty herself. What Parker brought to this series was the depiction of a very independent female character in her own series.

Although the series ends this July with the release of RED SHE-HULK #68, Parker did manage to do a great job writing Betty Ross in her own series and it will certainly be interesting to see where the character will show up next. What did you think of RED SHE-HULK? Are you planning to pick up the penultimate issue tomorrow?

Red She Hulk was disappointing compared to Hulk. I found Red Hulk way more interesting. I also like the variety of enemies and locations with Red Hulk.

It was actually one of my favorite series from Marvel currently. Well on the bright side of things, they COULD decide to do another She-Hulks book with her and Jen

@chewish: green she hulk is Jennifer Walters, a lawyer, avenger, and sometimes member of the fantastic four. Red she hulk is Betty Ross, who was a love intrest to The hulk, and she is also the daughter to the red hulk aka thunderbolt ross

But issue #67 doesn't come out tomorrow, issue #66 does. Issue #67 comes out July 3rd, so we still have a month left to enjoy the build up to the end of the current Route 616 storyline.

Personally I think Betty Ross was the break out character of the past 10 years. I used to think the Lois Lanes and Mary Janes of comics should just stay as normal people, but she completely shattered the idea that it wouldn't work for me. Great character and her book shouldn't be canceled.

I've never read this series, so I can't speak to the quality. I will say that Marvel gives out too many solo series to characters that can't support it. I do like the idea of a character who becomes freed to let loose their inhibitions. Seeing how they deal with their inner thoughts put out for all to see. That's part of what I loved about the PERSONA 4 story.

It could be interesting to see the staffs' take on a new characters they're unfamiliar with. Have users suggest names, and see a fresh perspective from the point of view of the staff..

I love how they've evolved Betty in the last few years, and I did start reading this series when she took over, but for whatever reason, I just lost interest and dropped it after the obligatory 3 issues.

It is sad to go, I agree with you @babs. I'm kind of pissed about this one too besides Demon Knights. It was actually good and loved every issue and it was better than some current Marvel issues. It really redefined Red She-Hulk and most definitely Machine Man into very interesting characters. I hope I see them again in maybe....an another Avengers title? Sigh, I didn't want to say that because we have ENOUGH Avengers titles. lol But it's the only way I can think of to see them still around.

IT would seem the new 52 is not the only place where titles are cancelled. 8 issues, about as much as Static. Whose next to join Betty, Gambit and the Dark Avengers? Morbius? Legacy? Captain Marvel?

The way I hear it, Journey Into Mystery is next on the chopping block. I think it's pretty sad how hard it is for Marvel to sustain a book with a female lead, especially considering how many DC has been able to put out. I mean, Wolverine's in half of every book, but put a pair of boobs on the same concept, and the buzz is nonexistent. God, I still miss Majorie Liu's X-23.

Oh, and killing both of Jeff Parker's books so close to each other. Nice. Why don't you kick his dog, while you're at it.

Too bad for Betty. I'm sure Marvel won't just forget Her. Nice to see Marvel both pay respect to classic supporting characters and turn them into worthwhile superheroes worthy of the Hulk moniker. How many times did DC try and fail to do this for Lois and Jimmy??? 68 issues of character development without a reboot. Something for even Marvel to be proud of, if nothing else Marvel respects its characters... DC could learn so much from just this one Marvel series alone.

Oh A-Bomb is lame BTW.

Though I still don't like Betty as a Hulk (IE, using the name Hulk moreso than being a person who transforms into a brute) and would've much rather had this story told with She-Hulk, it was still a good read and it's a bummer the book is getting cancelled.

Betty was better when she was less the hero and more of a free agent much like she was before with Bruce chasing her around Europe. She became stale as a "hero" A red she hulk book with Betty written more as an anti hero character would work better imho.

The series was average, i personally did not find it all that appealing. Its nice to see the interaction between Betty and Aaron but apart from that there really was nothing really special, or gripping going on in this series.

I picked the book up because I liked her first appearances as a Bad Ass loose cannon, but in the book she was the misunderstood hero and didn't feel the same. I don't think it was a book that needed to be cancelled, especially while A+X and Captain America are being released each month!

I am a huge fan of Red She-Hulk and I have loved this amazing (but way too short run). Since she jumped on the seen She-Rulk has been my favorite female character and I hope that she finds a place somewhere (she'd make a great avenger :) )

Hate to see this title come to a conclusion especially since it also starred another one of my favorite characters, Machine Man.

Oh and I will definitely be getting her last issue.

It was just ten issues of "character development" for Betty. They just continued with Rulk's numbering.

I'm sad that the book is ending. Jeff Parker is an amazing writer and the art was top notch!

Some people thought that the book should have been renumbered as #1 rather than take over what Rulk had; especially since it was part of with Marvel NOW! I think that a #1 would have generated more interest possibly.

The first trade is out now and the second will be out (on Amazon anyway) on September 17.

Here's the links for the trades:

Yeah, replacing Red Hulk with Red She Hulk was a good idea but the fact that they kept the same numbering was a bad idea. I didn't even know this book existed until a couple of months ago.

I don't think this book got a lot of attention, I mostly heard about the Avengers and X-Men books and Hawkeye.

I discovered Journey Into Mystery a couple of months ago as well and luckily was able to jump in at a start of a new story arc (such a great book!).

I will be picking up the trades!

LOVE red she-hulk. how much you ask? i made a character of her for my champions online game. she rocks. not as much as jen but in her own way she is really cool. i want a savage she-hulks book so bad with all three she-hulks. it could be an anthology series and eventually have the ladies team up. but oh well, maybe jen will get another book to replace this one?

Underrated character, underrated book. I'm going to miss this one. I hope the Red She-Hulk finds a stable place in the Marvel Universe; maybe she can patch things up with the Avengers and join up? I'm sure Machine Man and Tesla can convince Cap her heart was in the right place all along.
