IDW has done it again. As part of their Library of American Comics series, they've released some classic Batman and Robin daily strips. Last month saw the release of BATMAN WITH ROBIN: THE SILVER AGE DAILIES AND SUNDAYS Vol. 1 1966-1967.
Featuring 280 pages, this hardcover is a glorious tribute to the classic Batman newspaper strips. The dimensions are 1.2 x 11 x 8.8 inches and this release gives you a great look at the strips. Comics had a different feel during this period and it's always a trip to be able to read these stories. In this format, you get a nice crisp and clear look at the strips.
The book has a really nice presentation. If you've already watched the video at the top of the page, you have a good idea what you can expect. Even taking a look at the back lets you know who's inside.
It's not just newspaper clips inside. There's actually a decent amount of history of times. Today, we simply accept Batman's popularity and his place in everything. It's fascinating to get some insight into this particular time period. Before we jump into the actual comic strips, we get some History of the newspaper strip by Joe Desris.
There are also some cool pics and sketches from the time period as well. It's a really cool read.
The book then shifts into some full-color Sunday strips. The book reprints the strips from May 29, 1966 through December 18, 1966. As you can imagine, we get some pretty crazy stories.
The book then shifts into reprinting the daily strips beginning on May 30, 1966. These featured an ongoing story but were separate from the stories in the Sunday strips, hence the decision to print them in this fashion. On December 19, 1966, the daily and Sunday strips were merged together.
It's not just Batman and Robin featured. You can obviously expect their rogues gallery to appear, such as Penguin, Joker, and Catwoman. We also see appearances by Superman and Batgirl.
The book retails for $49.99. You might be able to find it cheaper at certain outlets. It's definitely worth it. The stories may have a dated feel because of the time period but it's like you're being transported back. These stories are a blast to read. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It makes a great gift for you or the big Batman fan in your life.
