Spoiler: Marvel Reveals the New Ultimate Spider-Man

Marvel announces who is crowned Ultimate Spider-Man in tomorrow's issue of Ultimate Fallout. There will be spoilers, and you've been warned.

Warning: Spoilers... Seriously. If you remember, back in June, Marvel announced that they will kill off Ultimate Spider-Man, but have someone else take his place. The death and replacement was announced during the Death of Spider-Man story arc, before Spidey was officially killed off. Even though everyone knew it was coming, it was still a bummer to see Marvel spoil it before the fans got to read it for themselves.

Today, once again, Marvel sent out a press release spoiling a big moment in their books just one day before the issue is released and it involves the identity of the new Ultimate Spider-Man.

No Caption Provided
== TEASER ==

Ultimate Comics Fallout #4, which will be in stores tomorrow, was where the name and identity of the new Ultimate Spider-Man was going to be announced, until Marvel's press release this morning.

That’s right, for the first time ever, someone other than Peter Parker will be Spider-Man! But, after the death of Peter Parker, who will rise up to defend the Ultimate Universe? Meet Miles Morales, a seemingly normal teenager from New York who will soon discover that with great power comes great responsibility…and even greater danger! But just what are the secrets behind Miles’ shocking abilities? What’s his connection to the original Spider-Man? And just why does he wear that costume? Courtesy of superstars Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli, Ultimate Comics Fallout #4 begins the story that’ll have everyone talking for years to come!

Miles Morales is the new Spider-Man? So why make the change? What will be the big deal with this new Spider-Man? Marvel Editor in Chief, Axel Alonso, has the scoop:

When the opportunity arose to create a new Spider-Man, we knew it had to be a character that represents the diversity—in background and experience—of the twenty-first century...Miles is a character who not only follows in the tradition of relatable characters like Peter Parker, but also shows why he’s a new, unique kind of Spider-Man—and worthy of that name.

No Caption Provided

Ultimate Comics Fallout #4, written by Brian Michael Bendis, Jonathan Hickman, and Nick Spencer and drawn by Sara Pichelli, Salvador Larroca, and Clayton Crain, will hit the newsstands tomorrow, 08/03/11. To see the continuing adventures of Miles Morales, check out Ultimate Comics Spider-Man coming out on 9/14/11 written by Brian Michael Bendis and drawn by Sara Pichelli.

Although it's cool to see a new Spider-Man, Marvel seems to be spoiling their own books a bit too much recently. What do you guys think of the new Spider-Man? Is Marvel spoiling their own books too much?

makes me think of the one bit that Todd MacFarlane said he wrote where spider-man saves a guy from getting mugged and the guy says something racist, and spider-man grabs him and says "How do you know I'm not black under this mask?"  I like that they're going this way with the Ultimate line, I feel like the closer it got to 616 stories the more annoying it was to read.

I don't really care about his race, what matters to me is that there isn't really a reason for him to be given the mantle... Spider-Man has always been about power and responsibility, and that should be represented with this new character (who has just come out of nowhere)

It would have been nice if there was an interaction between Miles and Peter because as far as I'm concerned the only person who can understand (and explain) the reason Peter Parker became Spider-Man is Peter Parker... the way this was done, as I understand it doesn't seem right to me.

Maybe this time Donald Glover might actually get a chance to audition if they ever did the reboot.

Why is everyone getting so caught up about his race? Seriously, why does it even matter?

What I'm wondering is what will be happening to the whole supporting cast that Pete had? I'm all for a new kid under the mask, but will the old support cast be there or will it be completely new?

And even more interesting is his origin story. I'm pretty keen to see how he got his powers and what his story is, since Ultimate Fallout #4 doesn't really give you much to go on. Lots of people are saying they wanted Miguel O'Hara for the new Spidey but I reckon Miles Morales has a nice ring to it.

Either way, I'm sure Bendis will pull it off. We can only wait and see.

It's just another legacy character. Mr. Terrific/Michael Holt = legacy character. Jamie Reyes/Blue Beetle=legacy character. Patriot II/Elijah Bradley=legacy character. Power Man/Victor Hernan Alvarez(also black and hispanic)=Legacy character. Captain America/Bucky Barnes=Legacy character. It goes on and on. This new Spider-Man is just another legacy character. Not really a big deal.

Diversity is stupid as a concept.............IF a writer makes a hero who's Hispanic or black or asian thats fine like spawn or something like that. But to pull a stunt and say HEY I WANT HISPANICs TO BUY DC BOOKS soooooo LETS MAKE A MEXICAN SUPERMAN!!!! and a CUBAN BATMAN!!!!!!! thats not diversity....thats called a cheap POP in wrestling or a pure BS stunt in the regular world. Spiderman is not black!! hes not obama!! nor is he hispanic or asian. None i mean none of the iconic superheros should ever change races! and Stan Lee is STUPID if he ever thought Glover should be spiderman. I think glover is great and community is one of my favorite shows BUT HELL NO!!

ON another note......... i would love to see HHH play luke cage!!! and it would be even better for spawn to be rebooted staring jason statham!!! OH does that tough a nerve?
and one final note Diversity does not mean BLACK...........the word means what it means it does not mean HEY lets give the black community representation which they already have and be politically correct!!!! and just screwover all the indians, hispanics, asians, who live in the US case you know as long as u have a token black representation you have............DIVERSITY!!!! YEAH!!!
Hispanics out number all ethnic  groups in the US and that makes them a bigger and more important selling market from a MONEY standpoint......and BTW raza are some big time comic fans  SOOOOOOO wheres the MEXICAN JLA from family guy!!!

I think Marvel is spoiling their books more than they should, but in all honesty, knowing who was gonna be under the mask when I picked up Ultimate Fallout #4 didn't tarnish the ride. Also, seeing this kid in action, hearing his lines, I think he's gonna be just fine as spider-man. I also think it's great that, if it's not peter parker under the mask, that they put in an ethnically diverse character. I remember reading a blurb from Stan Lee when people were trying to back Donald Glover (Community) to play Peter Parker in the upcoming Spider-Man film. Though I can't find the exact portion of the statement, he basically said that they gave spider-man the mask so that any kid of any color could envision himself as spider-man, and now that is becoming more of a reality.

Though at the same time, I'm curious how long until Peter Parker is back to swinging from building to building in the big apple.

I could agree with you there and I respect your point of view.    But one of the big reasons I was actually really hurt when Pete died in the Ultimate series (and actually had to avoid it for a bit) was because the Ultimate Peter was my favorite Marvel character of all time. Arguably Spider-Man isPeter and its not the type of complex where Bruce Wayne is really Batman. But, the way Pete died only underlined why Spider-Man should live. Its transcendent of one person. Its a call to duty. And I think what people fail to recognize is how important "Black-Hispanic" might actually end up being with this character. Its the very traditional conflict of identity that lived within Peter Parker meeting the burdens of new superhero responsibilities. But thats going to most likely be handled as a subtle sub-text. The surprising thing about all of this will be how smoothly this goes. How seemless it'll actually be.

@Jamiracles:
Fair point made all...I might give it a read for the first few issues, just to see where it goes. The only question Ill have is how they're going to go about the transition. How are they going to make this new kid Spider-Man What's his power angle? Why is he stepping up to the plate and taking the mantle?

Smells like a committee/publicity creation and nothing more.  Not matter how well he's written or how he's drawn, Miles Morales is just a stunt riding on another character's coattails.

This kid looks kinda goofy. Maybe he will take a Spider-Man 2099 approach. Maybe a Scarlet Spider thing.  Marvel isn't really known for their Legacy Heroes.

Perfectly said. I'm disappointed....

The sad thing about this is it isn't necessarily a thing of race. I apologize if Spider-Man was somehow this last remaining beacon of white glory but I'm black and hispanic and the only character I ever identified with was Spider-Man.

THe fact of the matter is that a year ago EVERYbody wanted the Ultimate Spider-Man to die. I was completely against it because there was just no reason for it. But it happened so ok. The same dude isnt around anymore and since Spidey's from New York, the likelyhood that the next one would be white just isnt the same the way it was in the 1960s. Spider-Man speaks to more than just white people and statistically its not illogical that the next person to move forward and continue his legacy would happen to be someone black and hispanic.

Its a positive push for ethnic youth to identify with more figures in mainstream media. Because when you look at the Avengers movie coming up in Hollywood and you're a black six-year old like my little brother and wonder why three fourths of that roster is white and see that thats not just happening in the Avengers but in everything else in a dominantly white run industry, you grow up a little confused.

I was pissed when they killed Ult Peter Parker.  But creating a new character and going this way with it is great.  I would have sucked to have a watered down Parker clone, or some other hero guesting.

I think it also sends the right message, that hasn't been traditionally adequately represented in comics, is that heroism knows no color gender or orientation boundaries.

Undoubtedly there is going to be mad uncomfortably with this from the old guard, and people who just don't understand or appreciate progress.  But hey that's what back issues are for.  America is not, and quite frankly has never been a single ethnic group state.  Our pop culture should be representative of who we are.  Not coddle some cloistered few.

I slagged Bendis for the mechanics of the death.  But I am applauding him for moving on in a new direction, good move.

no offense but i kind of see this new character as a bit of a missed opportunity (to be fair its not his fault its who i thought it was going to be), when i first saw the promo costumes i got really excited mainly since i thought it looked oddly similar to spiderman 2099's suit and i thought this was the perfect way to incorporate miguel ohara into another book. So yeah race plays no factor into my judgement here i just wanted to see miguel ohara in this book. that definitely would have made me start reading ultimate spiderman

good luck to this new character though.

For me personally, I don't view this as a false dilemma scenario. Do I smell gimmick? A lil, but Superman being superhuman was a gimmick. This is comics, most characters that are successful are, or were aided by gimmicks. Hey, well Spider-man is a young teenage superhero who is relatable and blah, blah. We do know that Bendis genuinely likes and writes diversity. He likes and wanted to write female characters, street characters, black characters, and has the track record of doing so, whether he is selling a lot, or not, and probably because thats where his genuine interests lie (not in female characters or black characters... he is just okay writing those characters, wants to, and does so fairly naturally)

So anyway, a false dilemma scenario, sort of exists here (or really more perceived to me by others) on two different levels. Marvel is only doing this for the sake of diversity all they aren't (when hey, it might just be a minor consideration) and you can't criticize the character without being racist (really its more about why you are criticizing the character which determines that its worth bearing in mind actual racists are allowed opinions and read comics too, so people should place emphasis if they feel they need to (and they shouldn't have to as well) when it comes to critiquing characters, on the why and how. I dislike Black Panther for example. For me in recent years he became a bit of a Gary Sue under some writers and I didn't like some of his other creative decisions)

So a lot of depends and room for discretion and assumption. I am interested in this though (but did not really want Ult Spidey to die)

Me too.

I just hope 2 things:

1. He isn't a rehash of Peter Parker. Different character, different origin, different powers. No "I got powers from being bitten by a spider" or anything like that. In fact, I don't think his powers should actually be spider related at all.

2. His mom is black. Black girls only like black guys? The man in an interracial relationship being black is incredibly cliched.

I understand Marvel is aiming for diversity.  I get that, ain't nothing wrong.  But Spider-Man is Peter Parker, Peter Parker is Spider-Man.  It's like when there was the new female Black Panther.  There was no chance there would be a white (or First Peoples/Latina in Echo's case) female wearing the Black Panther costume.  Sauce for the goose, sauce for the gander.  That aside, what I see is a new character being swept in on the coat tails of an iconic, well known, well established character.  If they want to create a sign-of-the-times character, bring him in under his own banner, let him make a name for himself!  How many great 'new' (insert previously established hero) who've been a roaring success?  Great characters are made by forming their own legends, not stepping in on someone else's legacy.

This is fucking awesome. Seriously, it really is. The whole of Peter Parker's run as Spider-Man is getting pretty much tied up. Torch and Iceman are going to the new X-Men series with Pryde. Jessica Drew is an agent of SHIELD. Gwen Stacy and Aunt May are going to disappear for a little bit. Jameson is probably going to get back on his anti-vigilante kick. New York City has its hero back and really, it will be nice to see how the new guy stacks up against Parker. Keep it up Bendis, Fix EVERYTHING Jeph Loeb screwed up.

I did care about the Ultimateverse until the whole Ultimatum mess. Right now it would take more than a rather gimmicky race swap to make it alright again.

Also, I'm kind of torn about the relevance of the whole deal. See, in my head them going with a black kid is so superfluous that it doesn't warrant the whole "we've killed Peter Parker" thing. On the other hand, if you stop to think about it, yeah, it's kinda big... because in comics it's all still white guys sculpted in marble. So, strangely enough, by being relevant this only kind of points out how irrelevant superhero comic books have come to be in many ways.

I don't know if I'm making this clear. The fact that I went "oh, crap, we DO need somebody to make the statement that a black superhero doesn't need the word "black" in his name" only made me think less of the superhero scene, rather than get encouraged because Marvel had the balls to go there with a triple A (ok, Ultimate triple A, which is probably two As only, but still) property.

As a young Black Hispanic Italian man I think what many people arent seeing right now is that this is actually going to have a significant and positive impact in not just comics but geek culture as well.

As being a geek becomes more widely embraced, the significance of the new Peter Parker being black-hispanic is helping address the emerging culture of ethnic geeks that have a hard time identifying with the established characterization of ethnic characters not to mention even finding a place in a dominantly white geeky culture. You have successful characters like Luke Cage and John Stewart that speak to certain people but characters like Miles Morales speaking to others. Though we could have used something like this a long time ago, the timing on Marvel's part couldnt be better with the buzz surrounding the new movie and the killing off of the recent Ultimate Peter.

This is a smart move and couldnt be handled by anyone better than one of the few writers in comics today that actually know how to write convincing black people: Bendis.

LOL, another fine addition to the tradition of not letting minorities be NEW ORIGINAL superheroes, but have them be the Minority Version of an established superhero. And that picture they chose (to reveal him) doesn't look flattering. Gigantic Head, big lips, huge nose...

and poor Spidergirl... she isn't allowed to take over the Ult Spidey title and SHE'S A PETER PARKER CLONE. I guess letting a female frontline a title would be TOO DIVERSE, huh Marvel??

Cool. As long as they are good stories, there shouldn't be any reason for complaining.

All I have to say is Jaime Reyes! if it can work with Blue Beetle it can work with Spiderman. He seems to come from the same mold, and I like that.

Some of you people are sad, sad, sad. Maybe they did this because you shouldn't live in a world where people are so openly homophobic/racist/misogynist/bigoted. This guy is mixed and I see a lot of you hate black people. Some of probably live in you mothers basement, so you don't know that the world has changed. Every time you see someone of a certain ethnicity in a role or placed somewhere you have never seen them before, it's not "shoving diversity down you throat," it's called the "twenty-first century."

This is why I love the Ultimate Marvel universe... they can do this kinda thing and you know its not going to be reversed in a months time... that the universe actually moves forward and isn't stuck in a type of limbo where everyone hits their prime, gets abs, stops aging and nothing can kill them..

Damn I want me some comic book abs...
