Spider-Man and Thor Declare War in October

Marvel unveils another teaser and it doesn't look too good for Thor.

Marvel is becoming the master at the teaser. They constantly release ominous images that rouse our curiosity. Today they have released a simple one: THIS IS WAR.

No Caption Provided

It's clear how this would involve Thor. But what does Spider-Man have to do with it? That's the question. The only other bit Marvel has released along with this image is the fact that more information will be revealed at the Amazing Spider-Man penel during Comic-Con International Sunday, July 15, at 12:30 pm.

We have to wonder why information would be released during a Spider-Man panel rather than an overal Marvel one. What is Spider-Man up to now?

Update

Here's the other teaser posted today at Marvel.com

I concur with all the Spidey confusion. Nothing in these pictures has anything to do with him.

Here's hoping Thor smashing Spiderman so hard he undoes OMD and sets the universe right.

Or Spidy could trap Thor in a web cocoon until Mighty Thor is a good book again. :p

Marvel, I love you, I really do, but give us some time to breath after AVX. I love your events, but filler comics exist for a reason, to promote character growth and give us a break from the constant influx of plot. if I was to give you any advice, it would be to wait a few months after AVX to start your next event, just to give the dust some time to settle.

cuz Marvel doesnt know how to right an interesting villain. They have Op'ed all their heroes and since 90% of them are Avengers or X-men, they are never alone.

"Oh no, Thor has purchased the last of the ingredients that Peter Parker needs to make his web fluid, and Parker is dangerously low! But, alas, it isn't really Thor, but his evil half-cousin twice removed who is a shape-shifter, and has taken the form of the God of Thunder. Spider-Man doesn't know, and has declared, 'This is War!'"

I get people being upset with Marvel pushing out events and if this is Ultron War then yeah its too soon. The problem I have is people always jumping to that conclusion every teaser and more times than not the teaser is for an upcoming arc in an ongoing, especially the ones involving Spidey. It is like the problem would be solved if Marvel didn't release teasers. Even though no content would be changed, people would be happy just seeing things as story arcs... with less hype.

Isn't time Marvel gets someone creative to be making event/crossover/direction decisions? God Quesada has ran Marvel in to the creative dirt. Sad. Axel has his work cut out for him. ...wait, nvm, Quesada tells him what to do. RIP Marvel.

Super_SoldierXII I've nothing against being entertained. I just prefer to be treated with a little intelligence. For me Marvel are not doing that. They promo event after event, not waiting for the last one to finish, before ploughing straight in. That would be fine if what they then produced was any good. I tried AvX. I nearly gave up after the depiction of two of Marvel's best leaders - Capt and Cyke - suddenly heading back to schoolyard mentality just to justify a big fight between the two teams. I carried on and it didn't get any better.

You're right about the variety. I've now switched that hard earned 'mula' into other comics. If I like a title (as with Aquaman and Elric: The Balance Lost) I'll stick with it. And I'm sure they'll be people who think those titles suck. But I also don't think it's abll about people being neagtive for the sake of it. Some of it, sure. But some of it is just what it is - calling Marvel on their constant back-to-back, low quality events.

I would be excited about this event, but Marvel is already in the middle of an event (AvX) and it's starting to get a bit tiring hearing about more events without giving the characters a break between battles.

Another event already? Another War already? Weren't Civil War, Siege, Secret Invasion, Fear Itself and AVX enough? The heroes just keep going from one big battle to another.

Also don't Wolverine and Spider-man get enough exposure as it is?

@Super_SoldierXII: I don't have a problem with events. Just with so many cross over events. I love events like the kraven family hunting all the spiders or The court of owls taking out the batman people. Its cool if its just isolated to those books the spiderman related or the batman related books. but I get tired of things like AVX where I have to buy comics I don't usually read like new avengers and secret avengers.

Also I've heard good things about secret avengers but I have too much to do to keep up with all of it right now.

It's The Ultron War.......Avengers-centric event, hence the poster-teasers of Thor and Wolverine....and Spider-Man's involvement.

I usually dig anything with Ultron....ceptin' maybe Jocasta.

Marvel has only shown me lately that they can't deliver on their own hype.

Last week I cancelled the only two Marvel titles left on my pull list. Bad writing, that's the bottom line. Marvel's reason to exist now is only to back up the movies with comic books and make sure that tickets keep selling and action figures keep selling. They could care less about the comic book readers.

And yes, I agree: How many times will Thor's hammer shatter? Sheeesh, it's starting to stink at Marvel.

1. This isn't going to be the 2nd phase of AvX or a continuation of that story. We are only halfway through that story now, so I assume that if there's a 2nd phase, it can get addressed within 12 issues.

2. This seems like the announcement of the next big event. I am surprised by how many people are surprised by this, though. Marvel has been in never-ending event mode for at least 5 years now, and it's not as if it's a secret that those things boost sales. Of course they're going to keep doing it. If it helps, remember this post when the event after this "war" gets announced.

3. I don't think teasers indicating that there is potential danger for Thor and Wolverine really mean much of anything. These guys are tied into every event. I wouldn't assume that they are necessarily at the center of things.

4. Bendis' Ultron War is a good guess. Like him or hate him, his upcoming departure from Avengers is a momentous occasion in the history of that franchise. It wouldn't surprise me if Marvel gave him one last shot as their point-man before shifting him away from the central spotlight.

5. Another interesting possibility:

@skaarason said:

maybe this has something to do with it ?

Between this announcement I recall from around a month back or so and the fact that it is being hyped in the Spidey panel makes me think Rich Johnston over at Bleeding Cool might be on to something...

http://www.bleedingcool.com/2012/06/25/ooh-thats-a-point-it-couldnt-be-the-reckoning-war-could-it/

I remember Dan Slott bringing up "the Reckoning War" a lot in She-Hulk. Perhaps Marvel felt like it was time to let him steer the ship for an event. He's certainly paid his dues in that regard and he is finally on one of their more prominent titles these days.

Wow... so many angry comments.

First things first: Stop complaining about Thor dying again and the hammer getting broken again, I like Thor and yes he's died a lot but these are teaser images that only show Thor's Hammer in bad shape, not him dead and besides, how many times have the events of a teaser image really occurred? If a comic teaser image/poster meant the things depicted always happened then how many times would it be now that the villains would have won? Seriously. Stop taking teaser images so literally and stop with the Thor'eal love.

Second: yes Marvel does many events, and some have been really crappy like the first act of AvX (but the second act started of great, let's hope it keeps that quality), but the vast majority end up being overall good despite the flaws, unlike DC that rarely has a good event. Night of the Owls and the various War of the Light crossover events were good but Flashpoint? The Crisis? War of the Green Lanterns? Geez people. I'd rather have back-to-back events that are so-so than occasional events that generally suck. Besides the argument in favor of fillers is ridiculous as they are absolutely boring 90% of the times. That's the reason I stopped watching Naruto and Bleach and only continued reading the mangas. The occasional filler is good but back-to-back fillers are much worse than back-to-back events.

As for the story itself: pretty sure it's Ultron War. To whoever said it's too soon check the timeline. It's time. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zWprpxOmwdU/T9EcXLvpp9I/AAAAAAAADY4/ugRRWauloQ4/s1600/Timetable+(new).JPG

Yesterday's X-men as to do with the Phoenix-Five. They said they were more than just mutants now hence the yesterday. Besides it runs parallel to Steve's Vision of the Ultron War.

The only thing that would be left to explain since "Fear without man" is probably Fear Itself: The Fearless (Valkyrie and Sin are women and still has to do with the Worthy's Hammers) is "What's in the rings". Well since the Mandarin has returned and has focused on making Stark's life a living hell, I'd say that's it specially because if i remember correctly Ezekiel Stane asked the exact same question after realizing he was under the ring's control.

Now you will ask how would this tie to Ultron? Well... what has Stark gone and done because of the pressure Mandarin put on him? He separated the armor from him. It's now an A.I. run Iron Man 2.0. That seems like a good body for Ultron to take over wouldn't you say? Specially because future Stark doesn't have the Extremis armor... he's got a rudimentary one ressembling War Machine's.

As for Spider-Man's involvement? Well Future Stark makes it very clear that it's Kang the Conqueror's fault this thing starts, but if Spider-Man is also responsible for this? Well... we've seen him getting closer and closer with MJ again. Wouldn't that make him wish the deal with Mephisto went down the drain while keeping Aunt May alive? He could be willing to change time in order for this to happen, and remember that after Spider-Island Madame Web said he would have a lot to bear should he choose to continue being Spider-man and although Sable's death (?presumed?) has taken a toll on him I don't think this was it yet.

Besides the mystical part of Marvel is also brewing something AND I'm fairly sure it has to do with Mephisto: I mean Magma is a powerful mutant but not the most powerful, why would Mephisto want something from her (it was not love, he had an ulterior motive that Loki ruined according to Mephisto himself), we had the Red Hulk, Venom, X-23 and Ghost Rider being marked with those pentagrams after that small crossover in Vegas and finally Rahnne's son is from a god and she has now decided to go after him. This last one is more flimsy and apparently not Mephisto related but it's on the Mystical side nonetheless. Probably Mephisto knows what Spider-man is going to try to undo the deal and is getting ready for it.

Also on the Mystical side of Marvel I almost forgot about the Defenders having to deal with the Concordance Engine.

Of course the mystical side may be something entirely different.

@mesosteros: I totally agree with you. It's just a matter of connect the dots. Bendis is leaving Avengers at the end of the year... but Ultron War was still on the table for him as stated in interviews. This also explains why AvX is shrunken from a year-long event into a rushed six month one. It's only the precursor to Ultron War... a lead-in as such, and smoke and mirrors for the true main event. I think Marvel is really going to shake up at the end of the year.

Well this sure seems like the next Marvel Event, and it's probably Ultron War according mesosteros post (good job man).

And if it IS the next BIG Company Wide EVENT I'll be a bit surprised, only because usually after the previous one there's fallout followed by a new "landscape" for Marvel Universe that changes a certain amount of books for a period of time, a la "The Initiative" and "Dark Reign". I guess Marvel's decided to change things up a bit, we'll see.

Spider-man's going to use his remaining powers of cracking jokes at his oponents like he's Deadpool or something. Wait, is he Deadpool, now?

This is good, Marvel just never utilized the title 'War' too much in the past decade. Certainly not enough. ALl they had was 'Civil War', 'World War Hulk', 'Secret War', Chaos War', 'Silent War' and 'World War HULKS' you just never saw Marvel use that word enough. YOu know them, diversity is key to story... things.

As far as images go, It doesn't tell us anything. Yeah, we're going to war. With whom?
