Six DC Titles Canceled, Major Shift In Creative Teams

Bob Harras and Bobbie Chase discuss the latest changes being made at DC Comics.

In a recent interview DC's Senior Vice President Bob Harras and Editorial Director Bobbie Chase revealed that five DC Comics titles are being canceled and that there will be major changes made to the creative teams. Based on the information released earlier, SAVAGE HAWKMAN, TEAM 7, FURY OF THE FIRESTORM, DEATHSTROKE, RAVAGERS, and SWORD OF SORCERY are all being canceled.

Some of these titles were launched relatively recently following the previous round of cancelations by DC, so the question remains, did the publisher really give these series a chance to blossom and thrive, or were they eliminated prematurely?

According to Chase and Harras, although SAVAGE HAWKMAN and DEATHSTROKE are two titles that are being canceled, we will continue to see these characters in the DC Universe in the future. For example, Hawkman will appear in JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA.

Cancelations are not where it ends, however. The heads of DC revealed that there would be major shifts made to creative teams, as well. Many creators who are seeing their titles come to an end (Christy Marx and SWORD OF SORCERY, for example) will be moving on to other titles.

According to the interview writer Michael Alan Nelson will be taking over SUPERGIRL from Mike Johnson. Writer Tom DeFalco is being replaced by Justin Jordan (DEATHSTROKE), and Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray are both moving to BATWING. Additionally, Sterling Gates (SUPERGIRL) will be taking over THE JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA'S VIBE for writer Andrew Kreisberg starting with issue #4.

DC is also rolling out "WTF Certified" where the publisher will push things to the limit. You can see the first "WTF Certified" moment this April.

What do you think of the news? Were you reading any of the series that have been canceled? Are you looking forward to seeing the changes made to any of these creative teams?

The fact that a sizable chunk of DC's New 52 books have been replaced by replacements that were replaced by something soon to be replaced just highlights how poorly thought out the relaunch was. They should've just used Flashpoint to do a Marvel NOW! style shakeup.

I am not surprised with Firestorm, it has been weak with the new creative team but Sword of Sorcery and Ravagers? Come on, those are great! I really hope that the characters wind up in other books. Fairchild and Rose have a backstory that needs explaining...

If Micheal Alan Nelson ruins Supergirl, I will be angry. At least JLA looks interesting, I wonder where Christy Marx will end up.

I can't say im surprised, but I was actually enjoying Team 7 and Sword of Sorcery very much, that's kind of a bummer. I was enjoying Firestorm too. Maybe I just like bad books... -.-

Won't miss Deathstroke and Hawkman though, they were kinda boring. Deathstroke at least started off good until Liefield took over. Hawkman actually bored me until Liefield took over, but with his departure I figured his books would get canned.

Ravagers bored me to hell...so, am not missing that one at all.

Dc doesn'thave patience, everythings not gonna sell like Batman or Bat related titles. This isnt fair at all to Dc fans, now they don't know whether to invest in new titles or not for fear of cancellations. This is absurd!

It's a shame the one writer screwed over such a fantastic character like Deathstroke but it is a business. Regardless only Team 7 was the only one I was reading of these six. Still don't know why Batwing is still around either.

Agh, looks like Demon Knights is the new I, Vampire. DC is going to keep that title at life support for months and just when things start getting better... BOOM, canceled.

Ravagers was boring and generic as hell, art and story wise. Team 7 got the generic team whitewashing treatment too when it could have been a good gritty book about a team of hardboiled mercs. The others meh never read em.

How the hell are World's Finest, Batwing and Stormwatch still going strong but S.O.S, T7 and Ravager's cancelled?

SMH.

Ravagers was starting to look up with the creative change.

Team 7 just got out the gates! It hasn't even established itself yet.

Sword Of Sorcery same deal as Team 7 and it was a damn good book, I'll be sorry to see it leave.

Am not really surprised that any of those titles were cancelled (besides Sword OF Sorcery, thought they might have given that a longer shot). Am noticing though that the 'diversity' of titles that the New 52 initially offered is slowly getting whittled down to the point where it's really just the same type of superhero titles they offered in the first place.

Have also hated how they handled Batwing. I loved the first arc, it was really different tonally to everything else going on in the DC universe, but still had that Batman connection. Then they just seemed to dump that whole tone and have just made him a bland, atypical superhero. I hope Palmiotti/Gray take him back to his roots a little more and offer us a bit of cultural diversity in the New 52 as i'm becoming blinded by all the WHITE in there, if yo know what i mean?

Was gonna hold of on Team 7 and Sword and read a big chunk of them at a time like I did with WW, JS, and the Court of Owls Batman stuff. Now, it's like, what's the use? I know DC is doing some heavy things but yeah, I don't think they've given these titles a chance to grow and get a fan base, kinda like FOX does with their TV shows. Firefly anyone? Jerks.

wow. I am genuanlly suprised that Team 7, Sword & Sourcery and the Ravagers are getting the boot. I mean, sure out of all 3 of those series i only read Ravagers (and only because Beast Boy was in it..... or at least a sappy non-joky version of him that was red.... seriously red? really) and stoped after issue 7, and i knew that it wasn't really going to last but I had expected it to last beyond 10 issues. The same for Team 7, a book set years before the main continuity with earlier versions of other characters is a book with a short life span, but I also expected it to last longer than this. Sword and Sourcery, well I didn't hear much about it, so no opinion really.

Deathstroke: sure it had a new creative team who were bigging up the book once more, but the damage of the previous teams has already been done, sorry to say. Firestorm: honestly i never heard much about this book, and I even forgot that it was still a running series, but i guess that in the end forgetfullness is almost as bad, if not worse, than bad writing. Hawkman: Now this really suprised me, especially considering that he's slated to be a main member of the JLA book as his book sales may have been boosted due to the release of JLA (or at least for a while). Now i only read the first volume in trade, so as to how the series has progressed so far I cant comment, but i thought it was a good series, hell it had a more dignified and understandable crossover with Statick Shock than, well, the larger dc titles (im looking at you first few volumes of Batman: Dark knight).

I've said it time and again, as have many of you here, this constant cancelling of titles is not doing the new 52 much good. Sure the sales of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman (and all their related titles) may be stable but the main point of having so many titles is that you can go beyond the main guys, but with so much chaos going on behind the scenes at DC with all these cancellings, writers leaving/ getting fired and internal (i guess investigations would be a good word here) investigation at the editorial staff we the readers are suffering as we cannot commit to titles to which we don't know if it will last untill the next year. The large "justice league" and related titles may make up the foundation of the new 52, but what's the point of making a foundation if you keep on knocking down the structures before finishing and starting from scratch again? So far the 52 is starting to lack the flavoure and substance which the big titles cannot offer us. (thats not to say that i dont like them, i do, but well you know what im trying to say.)

Well we know that a Snyder Superman title is coming this year, so I hope that we can finally get a Cyborg title (because DC is missing out on a title where the main hero cannot have a secret identity and the stories that can develop from that) and maybe a doom patroll book? I mean they have introduced beast boy and robot man in the new 52, so why not?

I was afraid that was going to happen to Sword of Sorcery - it's not really connected to anything else in the DCU, and that's the quickest way to get cancelled at DC. It's a shame, because everything in it was excellent.

I wasn't reading any of the other titles, but a few of the cancellations surprise me. Deathstroke, just because the title had a long run before, so I figured the fans would be there for that. I figured fans of the YJ Teen Titans would keep Ravagers alive, and I figured DC would keep Team 7 alive, because it was one of the only books answering questions about the early days of the New 52.

As far as Savage Hawkman, I had no interest. I was really digging the previous Hawkman title, before DC shifted it to Hawkgirl. I felt like it was a good way to use the Hawkman character. This New 52 version, more armored, and carrying that stupid looking sword-thing (I didn't like it in the 1994 version either), was not something I could bring myself to call Hawkman.

Firestorm hasn't made any sense to me since it stopped be Ronnie Raymond & Dr. Stein. The Firestorm Matrix was a nice attempt at reconciling all the various versions, but even that doesn't make sense. There have been hundreds of Firestorms? And we've known about nuclear energy how long? What is he? DC's Captain Universe? I had no interest in the New 52 version.

There's not really any surprise here. Each of these titles is selling rather poorly at the bottom of the DC sales chart. Their December sales were as follows:

#37 - 16k - RAVAGERS

#40 - 15k - TEAM 7

#44 - 14k - SWORD OF SORCERY

#45 - 14k - SAVAGE HAWKMAN

#46 - 14k - DEATHSTROKE

#49 - 12k - FURY OF THE FIRESTORM

The weird part is that DEMON KNIGHTS and BATWING are selling worse than Team 7, and STORMWATCH is selling worse than Ravagers, and yet they survived the cut...

And for those wishing RED LANTERNS was getting cancelled, it's sitting pretty at #21 (39k), so I wouldn't hold your breath :P

@fodigg: Right there with you, Fodigg. You think DC would've fought a little harder (or at all) to try to boost sales. Alas. Gotta say, this switching up of creative teams and constantly dropping titles is starting to tick me off and I'm a huge DC fan. It's making me less likely to risk buying a new book for fear of it getting canceled.

For all of you asking about Red Lanterns - it's selling at around 40K. That's about three times as much as most of these listed. It economically makes sense to keep the book around. Though I agree it's a very mediocre book and I'd much rather have seen that gone (and potentially replaced with a better Lantern spin-off) than Sword of Sorcery which I liked quite a bit and is being cut very short.

Good news.....don't put out any new titles but those already announced. I think DC really needs to slow down with the number of titles it has rather than keep shooting from the hip and trying to see what works and what doesn't. Overall the new 52 has not gone very well, IMHO, because there have been too many directions and not enough cohesion. Reduce the number of titles, take some time to properly introduce new character or changes to characters and see which become fan favorite for later solo series rather than try a solo series to see if the character will be liked.

Didn't care for any of the titles being canceled but hope that Beast Boy and Tera will find their way onto Teen Titans. Ravagers just didn't have a good direction and should have been Doom Patrol anyways and had a tone more in-line with X-Men/X-Gen rather than make them a second-rate Teen Titans.

I'd like them to use this as an opportunity for something more 'elseworld-y' or maybe a title to expand on Earth-2's universe. While I'm wishing, I'd like to see a new take on The Outsiders. I just re-read "The Nail" where the team is portrayed exactly how I'd like to see them...maybe throw them on Earth-2 hehe. Maybe, just maybe we finally see a Cyborg title so everyone can stop begging for one.

Crap I really liked Hawkman and Deathstroke but to me it seems like DC seemed to give them the shaft a lot. Oh well as long as they arent replaced by yet another Batman or Superman title I'm alright.

You know they will be. I wouldn't be surprised if they started adding Bat- on to random new books just to get them to sell The Bat-Atom, All-Bat Squadron, Wild B.A.T.S ect
