September Character of the Month: Cyclops

Get ready for some optic blasts!

*Did you want to vote but you didn't have an account? Well, what are you waiting for?! Signing up is beyond simple. CLICK HERE to register and then you'll be able to vote in all of our polls and join the countless discussions. Go on, make an account!*

The Dark Knight's time as our Character of the Month has come to an end and the voters have selected the next character that'll receive our praise: Scott Summers, a.k.a. Cyclops. The latest poll included four other X-Men characters, but the former leader of the mutant team knocked them all away with his optic blasts. The Fuzzy Blue Elf, Kurt Wagner, earned a distant second place and Wolverine held onto the third place spot. Sadly, Storm and Jean Grey didn't receive a lot of love and the Mistress of the Elements trailed behind the powerful telepathic mutant.

Now that Cyclops is the Character of the Month, you'll be seeing him appear more than usual on our homepage throughout September. Not only will we test his abilities as a combatant in the Battle of the Week (feel free to make suggestions below!), but we're also going to highlight his Best Battles, Best Covers, and Must Read Stories. Needless to say, the dude's going to get a lot of love this month and it'll hopefully be a fun and educational experience for everyone. And hey, if you don't like Summers, no one's forcing you to click on those articles, right?

No Caption Provided

As stated above, Cyclops really obliterated the competition and he had a strong lead pretty much the whole time. Here's the poll results just in case you're wondering how the voting turned out.

  • Cyclops 34%
  • Nightcrawler 24%
  • Wolverine 23%
  • Jean Grey 10%
  • Storm 8%

How about we begin the Cyclops celebration right now! Share your favorite image of the X-Man in the comments below and explain why you think it's so excellent. Let the Scott Summers praise begin!

Happy Cyclops won, both him and Storm were poorly portrayed cinematically and just didn't have enough screen time and lines to make a lasting impression on the audience.

I really hope the next Storm does the Comic Book version Justice.

As long as she is played by Halle Berry I seriously doubt that.

Yea for Cyclops! One thing that confuses me now is the amount of people that hate him because of his "revolution" but... what has he done that's revolutionary other than saying he's starting one? Has he attacked humans without provocation? Is he trying to destroy human government? Can anyone explain to me what revolutionary actions he's taken that are so unforgivable? From what I've read, his revolution is nothing but a slogan. Both his school and Logan's are training the students in combat and both groups routinely end up fighting with someone who attacks them. What's the actual difference?

Indirectly. His actions resulted in her being killed after he walked out on his pregnant wife. I think they went back and added to it to make her one of the people Winter Solider assassinated.

@teerack: Crystal cheated on the Human Touch with Quicksilver and then eventually left him for Quicksilver just like Scott left Madelyn for Jean. Then Crystal had a affair with some real estate agent after her and Pietro got married.

First thing i'd do if i got control of the x-men franchise is have it reveal emma frost had been brainwashing him. then have her and stepford cuckoo killed by cyclops.

Dear god that would be the worst thing I could think of. God forbid characters have real life attributes and ideals that don't mesh with everyone. Look at our government system. Ran, in most part by two opposing political partys who have clashing morals. Neither side is evil.(Though i'm sure both parties think the other is evil..) Truth is, life is complicated and truth is even more complicated. There are many characters that annoy the crap out of me, but they add depth. Stories where everyone agrees is not a story.. Its a get together, and it's usually boring.

@vandinejd_1991:

  • You clearly don't know anything about the Fantastic Four since there is a lot of emotional abuse in Mr Fantastic and Invisible Woman's marriage. Reed often lies and neglects his wife and kids, as well as manipulates her. The subject has actually exploded into some great arguments a few times.
  • Wolverine has cheated on four different girlfriends and killed his wife, as well as trying to sleep with another mans wife.
  • Banner has repeatably put his own selfish desires ahead of Betty every time it finally looks like their relationship is going to work, and it often makes Betty walk out on him.
  • Crystal cheated on the Human Touch with Quicksilver and then eventually left him for Quicksilver just like Scott left Madelyn for Jean.
  • Hank Pym hit Janet in a moment of lost control and then went and cheated on her years later when they were still having problems, it just happened that the girl he cheated on her with was a Skrull who then replaced him(Skurll Pym came in the picture the same day Janet and Hank split so everything Hank did was on him not a skrull).
  • Wanda lost control of herself and forced her husband Vision to try and kill his closet friends and resulted in him being killed.
  • Hawkeye has cheated on Spider-Woman, Black Widow, and Mockingbird.
  • Iceman has cheated on three of his girlfriends.
  • The way Rogue handled her feelings for Magneto were really cruel to both Gambit and Magneto.
  • Gwen Stacy tried to get Peter to propose to her and when it didn't work she went and had sex with Norman Osborn.
  • Namor(nuff said).

Domestic issues in comics aren't uncommon at all, and people who are good people really aren't immune to the these kind of stories.

@Teerack: What other couples are there in the Marvel Universe that have emotional/physical abuse? As far as I know Mr. Fantastic has not abused Invisible Woman in any way nor has Spiderman abused Mary Jane when they were married. Heck even characters famous for their bad attitudes like the Hulk and Wolverine haven't treated the women in their lives the way Scott has. The only other couple I can think of that has had a case of emotional/physical abuse is Janet Van Dyne and Hank Pym, who can actually be cleared from that crime because he had been replaced by a Skrull at that time.

Simple yet profound.

Wouldn't really call it profound at all. Kind of generalizes Wolverine as something for children frankly.

mm.. they're both for children..

and they both can be appreciated by adults.

When I was a kid I found Cyclops dull and liked Wolverine, but as an adult I like them both and can see how much of what I like about either is the relationship they have to each other. Like all of the best X-men characters, they're both more interesting because of each other.

lol... guys, relax. It was just a joke.

Cyclops from Decimation until Schism is a fantastic character. The ultimate student and fusion of Xavier and Magneto. The one who did what they never could and do it under the most difficult circumstances. Heavy is the head that wears the crown but Cyclops shouldered the burden like no one else could.

Oh please, Wolverine has like 4 books out and he had two films, and after they threw Cyke out at the start of the Last Stand the film basically turned into Wolverine and his mutant friends. Wolverine is Marvel's poster boy and basically the equivalent of what Batman is to DC.

Cyke has had some of the most interesting developments over the last decade. He deserves the win. Hands down.

nightcrawler is cool, I would of accepted a win for him happily as well.

logan get enough exposure as is imo

I used to really like storm. i though she was cool. but what I've read about her recently, she just comes across as really petty. so i don't care about her

young jean is pretty good. she has a little attitude.

He treats women like crap.

I've never gotten why people say this when the truth is a lot more complicated. Has Cyclops had a good track record with women? Oh God no. but people act like he travels around on a throne pulled by a group of slave girls when he's just made some bad choices. I'll summaries Cyclops' romantic history as objectively as I can and you can point to me exactly where he "treats women like crap". First he was with Jean and they were genuinely in love, they were so in love that it was honestly detrimental to both characters so when she died not only was he beyond crushed but since his character revolved around Jean he was so screwed up by it that he married Maddie who looked exactly like her and turned out to be a clone. Pre retcon they were just two young people who rushed into marriage so unsurprisingly they fell out of love and spent most of their union trying to save a doomed marriage. Jean came back to life and Cyke wanted to go and see her, note: he didn't want to date her, he didn't want sleep with her, and he didn't want to marry her but just to see if it was really her, case in point even when they were on the same team he was distant from her because he didn't want to betray Maddie. Maddie refused to let him go see her and they had an argument that irrevocably damaged the relationship. You would think that as a Cyclops fan I would prefer the retcon version where Cyclops was exonerated through being mind controlled by Sinister but honestly, I like the original version where neither Scott or Maddie where cackling super villains but instead two young confused people who were having an understandable problem that they both handled equally badly. A lot of people think Cyke just abandoned his wife and kid but it’s worth noting that he always intended to go back and indeed does but they've vanished and he’s appropriately overcome with worry and blames himself to the point of having a full on mental breakdown. Maddie turns evil because she thinks Scott cheated on her, needless to say things end badly, he marries Jean, some stuff happens including Cyke being taken over by Apocalypse and turning evil before being saved. Scott suffers another mental break down because evil and he and Jean grow distant from each other and their marriage stops working. While Cyclops goes to get marriage counseling from Emma Frost Jean tries to cheat on him with Wolverine but Logan turns her down. Emma tries to seduce Cyclops into an affair and succeeds in starting a psychic one but as a non psychic while he knows that he’s doing something wrong he doesn't view it as a full affair and actively resist physically becoming intimate with Emma. Jean finds out and as a psychic views his indiscretion as being as bad as the affair that he had been trying to avoid…then she dies again. Mortified Cyclops refuses to get with Emma out of respect for his dead wife but Jean psychically manipulates him from beyond the grave to force him into the relationship anyway. He stayed with Emma until AVX before they both went insane with Phoenix power forced on them by Tony Stark, Emma has a second psychic affair this time with Namor (and as psychic himself now due to the phoenix force he sees it the same way Jean did and even as a fan I have admit that that's kind of karma) and while being attacked on all sides by the Avengers and X-men he steals her phoenix force fragment either to fight back, out of anger at her, or possibly to spare her from the phoenix’s influence (personally I think the latter is reaching by some over protective Cyclops fans). So in that entire summary of his major romances at no point did he “treat women like crap.” He just made some terrible decisions in his more emotional moments, Marrying Maddie due to grief, storming out (intended to be temporary) during an argument (or If you prefer under mind control), and stealing the phoenix force from Emma when both were under the effects of a cosmic entity and being targeted by about 20 super powered assailants. People never seem to remember that Maddie started the argument where he stormed out, or that Jean tried to cheat on him first, and that Emma cheated with Namor and seems to understand why he did what he did enough to still work with him. I’m not saying that any of that justifies his poor choices but I am saying that your accusation is so grossly oversimplified as to be untrue.

this is a refreshing amount of reader comprehension, well said.

It's actually us pointing that wolverine is the rebel without a cause* and follows that whole vigilante theme that you find amusing and fun when you're young. On contrast to cyclops that is disciplined , follow the rules and it's sometimes boring , plus as a leader he has to make unpopular decisions and gets bashed by it and has to face all the consequences of his actions vs having an avengers pass with killing rights. It's easier and fun to like wolvie as a kid

IN a way we all would want to be wolverine but it's not realistic but you can relate to cyclops in certain aspects of your life such as failing and keep going and being disciplined and mature despite being a lil boring.

It may be harder to relate to cyclops cos he has all these hubris from all his past mistakes, but at the same times it makes easier for me cos we all carry the weight of our actions and still keep going, we relate to him as persons in a struggle against mediocrity. It's hard to accept because it means we're not perfect but it's easier because we're human and we shouldn't be perfect but trying to be better every day.

P.D: I like wolverine, but those wolverine and storm fans that keep bashing cyke make it difficult for me to accept him as a serious character

*(except that he does have a cause)

But, yeah, you can like two characters that don't like each other, especially if they're both good characters.

And in the case of Wolverine and Cyclops**, part of what makes both characters great is what they don't like about each other.

**(or Wolverine and Sabertooth, or Emma and Jean, or Emma and Kitty, etc, etc..)
