September Character of the Month: Cyclops

Get ready for some optic blasts!

*Did you want to vote but you didn't have an account? Well, what are you waiting for?! Signing up is beyond simple. CLICK HERE to register and then you'll be able to vote in all of our polls and join the countless discussions. Go on, make an account!*

The Dark Knight's time as our Character of the Month has come to an end and the voters have selected the next character that'll receive our praise: Scott Summers, a.k.a. Cyclops. The latest poll included four other X-Men characters, but the former leader of the mutant team knocked them all away with his optic blasts. The Fuzzy Blue Elf, Kurt Wagner, earned a distant second place and Wolverine held onto the third place spot. Sadly, Storm and Jean Grey didn't receive a lot of love and the Mistress of the Elements trailed behind the powerful telepathic mutant.

Now that Cyclops is the Character of the Month, you'll be seeing him appear more than usual on our homepage throughout September. Not only will we test his abilities as a combatant in the Battle of the Week (feel free to make suggestions below!), but we're also going to highlight his Best Battles, Best Covers, and Must Read Stories. Needless to say, the dude's going to get a lot of love this month and it'll hopefully be a fun and educational experience for everyone. And hey, if you don't like Summers, no one's forcing you to click on those articles, right?

No Caption Provided

As stated above, Cyclops really obliterated the competition and he had a strong lead pretty much the whole time. Here's the poll results just in case you're wondering how the voting turned out.

  • Cyclops 34%
  • Nightcrawler 24%
  • Wolverine 23%
  • Jean Grey 10%
  • Storm 8%

How about we begin the Cyclops celebration right now! Share your favorite image of the X-Man in the comments below and explain why you think it's so excellent. Let the Scott Summers praise begin!

Damn! Cyclops is just such a lame character! Then again all the characters who were options in the poll were lame. Nightcrawler was by far the least lame. Then Storm. But Scott, Jean, and Logan are all like as lame as lame could possibly be.

Simple yet profound.

Wouldn't really call it profound at all. Kind of insinuates that Wolverine as something for children frankly.

mm.. they're both for children..

and they both can be appreciated by adults.

When I was a kid I found Cyclops dull and liked Wolverine, but as an adult I like them both and can see how much of what I like about either is the relationship they have to each other. Like all of the best X-men characters, they're both more interesting because of each other.

Hooray for Cyclops. The Ultimate douchebag. He treats women like crap. Couldn't care less about his friends and family. Some how, its his month, even though Logan is the one that is dying. Let's worship Scott and forget about everyone esle, wait second, Marvel has done that for years.

Sure Wolverine is finally dying this month, but Marvel killed who he is a long time ago.

@arturocalakayvee: To be honest, I think he's better now than he's ever been. His transformation from uptight goody goody to uptight militant bad-ass, is one of the marvel success stories of the last few years.

Well, I feel like I will be away from the vine from a whole month, now...

More seriously, Cyke made me indifferent before, then I hated Cyke on Fraction, then now he doesn't interest me very much again.

Wolverine is Fanszrvice incarnate, but Cyke is very much overrated.

For what it's worth, I would have preferred Nightcrawler or Storm as Number one, but vox populi has won, and vox populi is king.

First thing i'd do if i got control of the x-men franchise is have it reveal emma frost had been brainwashing him. then have her and stepford cuckoo killed by cyclops.

Actually he never wanted the Phoenix. He ever right out says he didn't want it in AvX. Tony Stark ending up forcing the Phoenix into the Phoenix Five by mistake.

Compared to the rest of the couples in marvel who have lots of examples of emotional/physical abuse and murder I don't think singling him out for being a bad husband is fair.

Lol can we stop saying that he beat Wolverine....because he really didnt, he beat Nightcrawler.

Wolverine came in third and i think all his fans should consider why 77% of the Fandom didn't vote for the "most popular X-Man"....me thinks there's a harsh truth here..

Agreed...

I voted for Nightcrawler.

Wolverine was right. (Although he is extremely overexposed...)

Professor X is dead because of Scott.

He was trying to ignite a mutant rebellion recently, much like Magneto in his early days.

He spat in the name of Charles Xavier by naming his "school" after him.

I'm pissed off at Kitty Pryde for taking the Original X-Men there.

Kurt, Jean, or Ororo please.

Oh you mean the guy who had the entire existence of his species weighing down on his shoulders while he has been infected by both Apocalypse and The Void …oh and the entire Phoenix Force causing him to have a breakdown? Yeah, he's really at fault here.

Even once he came out of all of that stuff...he TRIED IGNITING A MUTANT REBELLION, much like MAGNETO'S, the former ARCH-ENEMY OF THE X-MEN, early days.

Awesome. So glad Wolverine didn't win. Don't care that much for wolvie. Good that Cyclops won. So he can get some love after the events of AVX. Cyclops first battle: Him verse Space Ghost. That would be awesome, specially that redo version that Alex Ross did the covers for. Read it and Space Ghost was pretty awesome. Or maybe the "too violent for TV" Space Ghost. Any Space Ghost. SPACE GHOST!

He treats women like crap.

I've never gotten why people say this when the truth is a lot more complicated. Has Cyclops had a good track record with women? Oh God no. but people act like he travels around on a throne pulled by a group of slave girls when he's just made some bad choices. I'll summaries Cyclops' romantic history as objectively as I can and you can point to me exactly where he "treats women like crap". First he was with Jean and they were genuinely in love, they were so in love that it was honestly detrimental to both characters so when she died not only was he beyond crushed but since his character revolved around Jean he was so screwed up by it that he married Maddie who looked exactly like her and turned out to be a clone. Pre retcon they were just two young people who rushed into marriage so unsurprisingly they fell out of love and spent most of their union trying to save a doomed marriage. Jean came back to life and Cyke wanted to go and see her, note: he didn't want to date her, he didn't want sleep with her, and he didn't want to marry her but just to see if it was really her, case in point even when they were on the same team he was distant from her because he didn't want to betray Maddie. Maddie refused to let him go see her and they had an argument that irrevocably damaged the relationship. You would think that as a Cyclops fan I would prefer the retcon version where Cyclops was exonerated through being mind controlled by Sinister but honestly, I like the original version where neither Scott or Maddie where cackling super villains but instead two young confused people who were having an understandable problem that they both handled equally badly. A lot of people think Cyke just abandoned his wife and kid but it’s worth noting that he always intended to go back and indeed does but they've vanished and he’s appropriately overcome with worry and blames himself to the point of having a full on mental breakdown. Maddie turns evil because she thinks Scott cheated on her, needless to say things end badly, he marries Jean, some stuff happens including Cyke being taken over by Apocalypse and turning evil before being saved. Scott suffers another mental break down because evil and he and Jean grow distant from each other and their marriage stops working. While Cyclops goes to get marriage counseling from Emma Frost Jean tries to cheat on him with Wolverine but Logan turns her down. Emma tries to seduce Cyclops into an affair and succeeds in starting a psychic one but as a non psychic while he knows that he’s doing something wrong he doesn't view it as a full affair and actively resist physically becoming intimate with Emma. Jean finds out and as a psychic views his indiscretion as being as bad as the affair that he had been trying to avoid…then she dies again. Mortified Cyclops refuses to get with Emma out of respect for his dead wife but Jean psychically manipulates him from beyond the grave to force him into the relationship anyway. He stayed with Emma until AVX before they both went insane with Phoenix power forced on them by Tony Stark, Emma has a second psychic affair this time with Namor (and as psychic himself now due to the phoenix force he sees it the same way Jean did and even as a fan I have admit that that's kind of karma) and while being attacked on all sides by the Avengers and X-men he steals her phoenix force fragment either to fight back, out of anger at her, or possibly to spare her from the phoenix’s influence (personally I think the latter is reaching by some over protective Cyclops fans). So in that entire summary of his major romances at no point did he “treat women like crap.” He just made some terrible decisions in his more emotional moments, Marrying Maddie due to grief, storming out (intended to be temporary) during an argument (or If you prefer under mind control), and stealing the phoenix force from Emma when both were under the effects of a cosmic entity and being targeted by about 20 super powered assailants. People never seem to remember that Maddie started the argument where he stormed out, or that Jean tried to cheat on him first, and that Emma cheated with Namor and seems to understand why he did what he did enough to still work with him. I’m not saying that any of that justifies his poor choices but I am saying that your accusation is so grossly oversimplified as to be untrue.

It's actually us pointing that wolverine is the rebel without a cause and follows that whole vigilante theme that you find amusing and fun when you're young. On contrast to cyclops that is disciplined , follow the rules and it's sometimes boring , plus as a leader he has to make unpopular decisions and gets bashed by it and has to face all the consequences of his actions vs having an avengers pass with killing rights. It's easier and fun to like wolvie as a kid

IN a way we all would want to be wolverine but it's not realistic but you can relate to cyclops in certain aspects of your life such as failing and keep going and being disciplined and mature despite being a lil boring.

As for cyke fans bashing logan? We don't really do, they start the fights most of the time by using facts out of context and we defend cyke with canon. Cyke is not a saint and he's not perfect, just like every person in real life he ain't a friggin gary stu, he fails constantly and has to fight back without a healing factor or face the consequences without avengers ID to clean him, just like in friggin real life.

It may be harder to relate to cyclops cos he has all these hubris from all his past mistakes, but at the same times it makes easier for me cos we all carry the weight of our actions and still keep going, we relate to him as persons in a struggle against mediocrity. It's hard to accept because it means we're not perfect but it's easier because we're human and we shouldn't be perfect but trying to be better every day.

P.D: I like wolverine, but those wolverine and storm fans that keep bashing cyke make it difficult for me to accept him as a serious character

But, yeah, you can like two characters that don't like each other, especially if they're both good characters.

And in the case of Wolverine and Cyclops**, part of what makes both characters great is what they don't like about each other.

**(or Wolverine and Sabertooth, or Emma and Jean, or Emma and Kitty, etc, etc..)

i'm really glad cyke has won. this should be a good month.

nightcrawler is cool, I would of accepted a win for him happily as well.

logan get enough exposure as is imo

I used to really like storm. i though she was cool. but what I've read about her recently, she just comes across as really petty. so i don't care about her

young jean is pretty good. she has a little attitude.

Hooray for Cyclops. The Ultimate douchebag. He treats women like crap. Couldn't care less about his friends and family. Some how, its his month, even though Logan is the one that is dying. Let's worship Scott and forget about everyone esle, wait second, Marvel has done that for years.

Oh please, Wolverine has like 4 books out and he had two films, and after they threw Cyke out at the start of the Last Stand the film basically turned into Wolverine and his mutant friends. Wolverine is Marvel's poster boy and basically the equivalent of what Batman is to DC.

Cyke has had some of the most interesting developments over the last decade. He deserves the win. Hands down.

Cyclops from Decimation until Schism is a fantastic character. The ultimate student and fusion of Xavier and Magneto. The one who did what they never could and do it under the most difficult circumstances. Heavy is the head that wears the crown but Cyclops shouldered the burden like no one else could.
