SDCC 2014 Interview: Mark Waid Talks S.H.I.E.L.D.

The new series will be like the show with an unlimited budget.

No Caption Provided

For those who are enjoying the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. television series, you're in luck because Marvel announced on Sunday that there's a new series coming to town: S.H.I.E.L.D., which is will be like the show but with an unlimited budget, taking place in the 616 universe. Writer of this upcoming series, Mark Waid, talked to us about the series and what we can expect.

COMIC VINE: What is the new S.H.I.E.L.D. series about?

MARK WAID: As the Marvel Universe becomes more and more perilous, Fury and Coulson bring a new strategy to certain missions--recruiting specialists whose skill sets line up with the mission at hand. Often, that's other superheroes, many without any prior connection to SHIELD. Sometimes, it's supervillains. Sometimes it's the most obvious candidate, often it's the least. But it's a chance to do a SHIELD series truly spanning the Marvel Universe.

CV: Who is a part of this new team and what can we expect hero and villainwise in this book?

MW: The main player in every story is Agent Coulson, and Fury will be a mainstay. Beyond that, what's exciting is the opportunity to introduce some of the other TV cast into the Marvel Universe proper, creating "Marvel Universe" versions of Mae, Fitz, Simmons, and the others. And in terms of guest-stars, the sky's the limit, but we've already figured out stories with guest-stars like Dr. Strange, Iron Man, Daredevil, Baron Mordo, Magneto, Invisible Woman, and the New Warrior kids. Just for starters.

CV: What kind of tone will this series have? Are you going more along the same lines as the television series?

MW: To a large extent, but not by design--more because it's a tone that tends to echo the tone generally in my own writing.

CV: Is there any connection to the Hickman run of S.H.I.E.L.D. at all?

MW: Keep reading.

CV: Each issue is going to have a single mission. Are all the issues meant to be stand alone or will these stories be building to something bigger?

MW: It would seem to make sense that while every mission is a stand-alone story that there'd be some running connection, wouldn't it?

CV: Another interesting thing about this series is that it has a rotating crew of artists. As a writer, what were the challenges in writing for different artists with each issue?

MW: No challenge, just opportunity. Carlos Pacheco does bombastic action terrifically. Chris Sprouse brings the humanity with a dash of humor, and Alan Davis can draw anything!

CV: How much of the new Deathlok will we see?

MW: All 6'2" of him.

Thanks to Mark Waid and make sure to check out S.H.I.E.L.D. this December.

Marvel keeps putting out more and more series! And as far as I can tell, not many of the existing ones get cancelled!

Sometimes I feel like the only person who couldn't care less about Coulson.

Looking forward to this series, though.

Secret Avengers has made Coulson one of my favorite character. I'm going to be all over this book.

This makes me wonder... is Storm back to being an Avenger?

I love how they put every Marvel Hero on the cover to promote a book about the AGENTS of S.H.I.E.L.D. And being honest did anyone really wanted this characters so much to put them in the mainstream Marvel Universe they suck in TV Show?

As a concept, I think this S.H.I.E.L.D book sounds pretty cool but I am getting a little tired of the films/tv shows so heavily influencing the comics. Part of me thinks I should just get over it because it seems like a trend that is here to stay, but I think including characters that aren't all that well liked is taking it a bit too far. Coulson made sense because he was a fan favorite but most of the characters from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D are pretty bland imo. Although, with Waid writing it, there is a better than average chance it'll be good.

So it's basically Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. in comic book form. I'm cool with that

@stmichalofwilson: Which is the main gripe people had about the show. The lack of Marvel comic elements.

@cdw101: I agree with you there sir. @teerack: Yes I would say she is.

No she's not. Waid said it was going to have a lot of non avenger team ups.

So, this is basically what people were hoping the TV series would be in the first place, and people are still complaining about it? WHAT DO YOU WANT PEOPLE.

This book would make a lot more sense if they didn't say it's 616.

This is a show that has actually denied the existence of magic, and in which mutants are not known to exist by people who live a stone's throw from Westchester in the 21st century. The show itself has so deeply made clear the line between Marvel-owned cinematic properties and those owned by Fox and Sony that the idea that those characters could possibly be 616 characters is patently absurd.

It's inspired by the show, not an adaptation, these will be the Earth 616 versions of Agents of SHIELD in the same way Coulson is the Earth 616 version of Movie Coulson.. The show exists as part of the marvel Mutliverse just like all movies and TV shows Marvel has ever done.

@leokearon: I recognize the latter point. I'm just saying that these characters would be very different had they lived in the 616 -- nearly unrecognizable from the people they are in the show. It's just a radically different place to live in. Think, they lived through the attack by the Chitauri; it's a major formative moment for so many of these characters, learning about aliens and superheroes and whatnot. That's an event that didn't happen in 616, and it's an event that would have played out far differently in a world with X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man.

So your point that it's inspired, not an adaptation, is kind of another way of phrasing why I think it's ridiculous: a comic version of the show would make plenty of sense; trying to integrate these characters into the 616 universe without radically changing who they are, not so much.

We can only hope, brother. It does my heart good to see Cap & Thor as they're supposed to be.

On the note of the series, I'm thinking positive about it. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.- the show- with an unlimited budget, or the budget of the movies, would be an awesome show. And I do like Phil Coulson, I think he's the best original character to be introduced in the movies, he's a likable & relatable character, & I do like him being brought into the comics(moreso than Sam Jackson Fury/Marcus Johnson, which seemed very forced.) & in the comics there are really no limits to the scope, not constrained by the budget & what characters they can or can't use. So this has the potential to be a good series. I'll definitely give it a chance.
