SDCC 2013: Marvel: Superior Spider-Man Panel

Love him or hate him, Superior Spider-Man is here to stay. Find out what Marvel said about Otto-Man's future and all of the other Spider-Man related titles.

If you feel like there's been an overdose of SUPERIOR titles recently, it's because Marvel has deemed July "Superior-Spider Month." Pretty much anyone and everyone surrounding the Spider-family books were present except for Dan Slott, Ryan Stegman and Cullen Bunn (which pains me because I'm a huge VENOM fan). But fret not, Dan Slott did phone in to answer a few questions later in the panel.

No Caption Provided

* I'll upload the new images when they become available to me

  • In case you haven't been following solicitations, Superior Spider-Man #17-19 sees the return of Spider-Man 2099.
  • The #17 variant by JG Jones is phenomenal. Seriously, it's amazing.
  • Black Cat returns in issue #20. They say this will be a “very big” issue – bigger than #698.
  • Regarding Superior Foes: We saw a few pages from an upcoming issue and it included a very familiar face: The Punisher.
  • Christopher Yost on Superior Spider-Man Team-Up: taking everything that works about Avenging Spider-Man and bringing it to the next level. It’s “the fun book.”
  • Superior Carnage: Kevin Shinick says he really loves putting the spotlight on the villains -- to see them make these poor decisions. He wants to show Carnage "like we’ve never seen before and really mean it." A lot of the Marvel Universe will be brought into this book as well.
  • Scarlet Spider: Kraven wants something very specific from Scarlet Spider and we’re going to figure out what it is (death, I assume).
  • Superior Spider-Man #22 kicks off“Darkest Hours.” This will be the first time Agent Venom and Superior Spider-Man face off. Leads to something “pretty massive” in the book.
  • Slott chimed in via phone and says they worked really hard to keep the two characters apart in order to build up to this and there will be a lot of friction between the two.
  • As expected, we will see more of the Lizard and Green Goblin's return will be "big."
  • Fan question:“Will Superior remain a jerk and unrelatable?” Slott says Ock is relatable because he’s the underdog and seeing the traditional hero always win isn’t fun.
  • Fan question: “What made you settle on Ock being the one to defeat Parker?” Slott says their origin timeline is so similar. He states if Pete never felt responsible for Uncle Ben’s death, he could have turned out like Ock.
  • Fan question: “Will the symbiote want to attach to Spider-Man and realize it’s not Peter Parker?” Panel response: "That would be crazy, wouldn’t it?!"
  • Fan question: "Will we see the return of Peter Parker’s ghost or consciousness?" Panel response: “No! How clear can we make that?!”

I haven't read any of it myself but I am glad that they are keeping the concept for a bit longer, better than just undoing everything which is what seems to happen every five minutes.

Ock is relatable? Ok, i see, I mean i've always been an arrogant smart ass who kills people. oh wait....

QFT. It just shows how lost Slott is in this fan fiction he's writing that he can't see what he's doing to the Spider-Man universe as a whole. That is, he's leaving it in much worse place than when he started out.

I always like to see the best in things, but I tend to what you guys say. Still, the addition of Spider-Man 2099 to the mix is nice, as well as seeing Kraven interacting with Kaine. And if I'm being honest, Superior's new suit does look pretty cool (ADMIT IT @theacidskull)

As for the idea of Slott making Ock permanent, if he says anything other than that, it completely undermines his authority. While the article gives alot of info over the various Superior themes happening in different titles, still no word was given of Superior Spider-Man into 2014. Peter will return soon enough *crosses fingers*

It seems clear that the SSM book will continue until AT LEAST March, which will be the start of the "Darkest Hours" storyline and there has been no indication that Marvel is going to pander to the Parker fans and rush his character back by May. IMO, that's great news; Venom vs Superior Spider-Man....*becomes a bit faint*....

Also, I think that when Slott says that SpOck is the underdog, I think he means that SpOck will never be on the level of Peter Parker in the eyes of most of the fandom.

I love Superior Spider-man. I thought it would end soon (with Ghost Peter and all) but it seems it's going to last for a while and I really belive it's a good think that make for new and original stories for the characters. Also, Ock is so mad that you can't even predict what's going to happen next, and I love that.

To clarify, all they say is there will be no more "Jiminy Cricket" Parker ghost. That's not the same as saying Pete doesn't come back. To me it seems the book is swinging slowly toward a conclusion, with Ock reverting to villainous ways.

I had to drop this title. I hated that Slott constantly made Parker look like the bad guy. I hated that every issue I look for some hint to Peter coming back. I also hate the idea that the bad guy wins. Does anyone else find it disgusting that this old crippled villain gets Parker's awesome life, with amazing friends, family, and adventures, instead of dying? Where the hell is the Karma in that? What, Peter once again is under-appreciated for the shit that he does? I am sick of that story, I get it enough in real life, I don't need it in comics. And what does Slott mean relatable? If you relate to Ock, then you probably don't collect comics; you most likely are a CEO or a Chairman for a big company that involved a long and bloody path.

The timing for Superior is horrid. I mean he has his "Amazing Spiderman 2" coming out and his own TV show is on the rise, so why kill him off when his popularity is rising? Still I like Ock enough to not be bothered. To all the people saying "Super Heroes shouldn't be dicks" Ever met Wolverine or even Batman?

So when did wolverine and batman start swaping bodies with their enemies, while enforce 1984 rules across the city?

Batman does the same thing that SpOck does; Gotham is HIS city, as Bruce has said plenty of times. He has surveillance everywhere (like SpOck), breaks his enemies bones (like SpOck), his non-hero life is a lie, or not his true self for the most part (like SpOck) and is rude to almost everyone (like SpOck). When a new hero shows up in "his" city, if they don't do stuff in a way that he approves he either a) forces himself in their life or b) tries to make them quit; at least until he gets to know them. Sounds like a control freak to me.

So yeah, while Batman hasn't swapped bodies with anyone, and tried to take over their lives, he's still an asshole for the most part.

Wolverine don't give enough f*cks to any of the stuff Bats or SpOck does, but he's more of an asshole than the other two lol.

Hell yeah Otto is a lot more relatable. Sure you could say that a lot of what he's doing is morally wrong but I think a lot of readers would never admit to how selfish they'd be if they were to get their hands on any real power. It goes back to the Alpha arc in Amazing and how if a tormented kid got his hands on amazing powers he would use them in really petty ways. There's nothing about the paragon side of Peter Parker that I find all that compelling anymore. Everyone WANTS to do the right thing but when you're an adult you find out sooner or later that the right thing often gets you jack squat.

Also do all the sad and lonely fans reading about all the smoking hot babes Peter happens to hook up with (Gwen, MJ, Black Cat, Ultimate Kitty Pryde) find him really that relatable or are they simply looking for yet another power fantasy to indulge themselves? Finding your soul mate in real life goes beyond body type thus making Otto less shallow than Pete for dating Anna Maria, a person he feels a bond with despite her physical deficiencies.

Dude there have now been 4 Spider-Man movies as well as like 8 cartoons, and dozens of video games. There is no 'good timing' for Spider-Man anymore because he's been so prevalent in pop culture for years. His popularity isn't going anywhere no matter what happens in the comics so they might as well shake it up after 9000+ comic book appearances. Most people who don't read comics probably don't even know or care that Ultimate Peter Parker died.

Funny how their reaction to questions regarding Parker's ghost or consciousness is such a unanimously resounding NO....as if they are trying to intentionally lead us down the primrose path.

Could be, or it could just be that the rendition of Peter we saw truly is no more, and that there is another avenue for his return. Whatever happens, I do truly believe Superior is here to stay and we will have a spider powered Ock in some capacity, but I also believe Pete will be back. Now, as for the logistics of it all...not sure on that.

Just remember that the memory fragment was just that, a fragment of Peter's consciousness/memories. His soul however is still out there.

As for this loving/hating Superior...really at this point, I am kind of meh about it all. Yes, the book is trying something different, and telling a different kind of Spider-Man story, but my problem is that I miss the humor of Peter has Spidey. I miss the comedic moments and one liners, and to be honest, the comedic moments that have been implemented in Superior just kind of falls flat. Scarlet Spider on the other hand gives us a dark hero, and the comedic moments that work all in one book.

I just find Superior lacking for me currently. And this isn't a fan rage over Pete (though I do prefer him as Spidey). I can understand wanting to try something different, and I can understand where people get enjoyment out of the book. I am just losing interest personally.

Batman does the same thing that SpOck does; Gotham is HIS city, as Bruce has said plenty of times.

His city to protect, not to rule. Batman never places himself above the law

breaks his enemies bones (like SpOck),

SpOck either kills his enemies or puts them near death.

his non-hero life is a lie, or not his true self for the most part

Are you seriously comparing being a billionare playboy, to the stolen life of another man?(like SpOck)

and is rude to almost everyone (like SpOck).

SpOck is a complete asshole to everybody with the only exception being his private tutor he wants to bone. Batman has shown kindness to his friends, allies and family.

When a new hero shows up in "his" city, if they don't do stuff in a way that he approves he either a) forces himself in their life or b) tries to make them quit; at least until he gets to know them. Sounds like a control freak to me.

The only reason Batman would ever do that, is if the person was killer. SpOck however would attack anyone regardless if your on the good side of the law.

So yeah, while Batman hasn't swapped bodies with anyone, and tried to take over their lives, he's still an asshole for the most part.

Batman is an asshole if you ignore every bit of context to his actions.

Forget the naysayers, this book is so awesome and has so much room to grow. Peter's been doing his thing for so long it's nice to have something fresh. People complain about the status quo, and then when it's shaken up, they complain again. And to all the people that think Peter is coming back within a year... don't count on it. They're launching three new Superior comics this month. Face it, they're in for the long haul, and I couldn't be more excited.

My thoughts exactly.

I've been holding off trying to give this "Superior" Spider-man a shot. I have been a reader since, well, since I was able to read. That mean the 80's, the 90's,the 00's, and now. And I cannot hold back any longer. Lets take a look at this from a reader and as a writer's perspective. First they have eliminated about 50 years of writing by killing the lead and , starting "new'. This is complete B.S. This all comes off as "well....we couldn't write anymore stories abut Peter....or let's be honest we didn't want to" I was there at the panel in Chicago, and they spouted off the same garbage. Let me tell you the majority of readers in the audience were muttering what horrible garbage they were trying to pawn off on all of us as readers. If this is the case why not just replace Cap with Red Skull and keep that going, or Wolverine with Sabertooth's mind? (crap ....I'm giving them ideas). Just be an original writer and come up with something FOR Peter Parker, not for someone else because you want to make Spider-Man a "darker, more brooding" character. The new writers are doing a disservice to any of the writers to Spider-Man in the past because they copped out and decided it was too hard to write for him, while the old writers all found a way to continue on with the Parker character, for good stories and for bad.

@ando123: Are you serious? You like to read about heroes not being heroes I suppose. Well, to each their own. God I hate superior spider-man, the entire concept just makes me ill. It's saying hey, it's okay to be a villain, kill the hero and take his place, what a wonder roll model we have for our children.

Peter Parker is a role model? Really? That's not to say that his heroic values aren't great or that he isn't a good character, but Peter is living at home with his elderly aunt whom is too nice to say that he is a deadbeat while hearing it all the time from her friends. Pete is a good guy, but his life has never been about him being some sort of societal paragon, but rather its all about him having a rather humble life and upbringings. Well that and Marvel beating the whole "Parker Luck" horse to death and then hitting the corpse with a steamroller for good measure.

Hell yeah Otto is a lot more relatable.

If you find antisocial,moral-less murder relatable, then you might need to be checked to the nearest mental ward.

Sure you could say that a lot of what he's doing is morally wrong

"Could say", even a 10yo kid would know that otto is evil

but I think a lot of readers would never admit to how selfish they'd be if they were to get their hands on any real power.

That doesn't justify any of otto's actions, considering the type of world he lives in.

It goes back to the Alpha arc in Amazing and how if a tormented kid got his hands on amazing powers he would use them in really petty ways.

You means the arc that most people hated, due how alpha turned into overpowered jackass that undermined peter and often give more trouble to himself due to his reckless actions.

There's nothing about the paragon side of Peter Parker that I find all that compelling anymore. Everyone WANTS to do the right thing but when you're an adult you find out sooner or later that the right thing often gets you jack squat.

You do realize it harder to right things life, compared to breaking the law

Also do all the sad and lonely fans reading about all the smoking hot babes Peter happens to hook up with (Gwen, MJ, Black Cat, Ultimate Kitty Pryde) find him really that relatable or are they simply looking for yet another power fantasy to indulge themselves?

Parker's problems in life with bad luck, job rejections, bullied in school, minimum wage, his job creating friction between his social life are the relatable parts of his life. Parker dates with hot women don't break how relatable his due to how he met them. Also superior spider-man fits the mold of a power fanstasy, considering how otto wanks off to peter's memories of Mary Jane.

Finding your soul mate in real life goes beyond body type thus making Otto less shallow than Pete for dating Anna Maria, a person he feels a bond with despite her physical deficiencies.

First of all, peter never dated a chick for their body. Second read about stunner's and otto's relationship before you start making up things.

@darkday:

Umm, your information is a tad out of date. In fact, most complaints people have with Peter is that his life was good. He moved out, got married, was making money and actually had a decent career. Many people complained that wasn't Peter Parker. Now had you mentioned he made a deal with the devil for his own selfish pride because he felt bad about his aunt and as a result messed over thousands of people to make himself feel better, that one I'd give you. But yes, with great power comes great responsibility. He at least strives to be one, fails alot, but tries. Instead you like a villain who killed someone, took his place and calls himself a hero. He's a poser in the worst way with absolutely NO redeeming factors

I think I just noticed something about the panel that has squicked me to no end.

Black Cat returns in Issue #20. It's a 'Big' issue.

Unless Slott cleverly makes Felicia the first to realize he's not Peter (That's the longshot, because by now Wolverine, Telepaths, The Avengers, NO ONE has questioned the Otto because....Editorial Edict.)

The two options become Otto killing Black Cat, because that's his MO now when he encounters almost anything... or Otto sleeping with Felicia. Which brings us back to the start of Superior, and the squicky of Skin-stealing Otto sleeping with someone from -Peter's- life. While pretending to be Peter.

I'm guessing option B. Because...Editorial Edict. But hey, the squick's okay because she's 'a woman of loose morals' in comics, right? *crickets* right?

I'm sure the rage will sell issues and it'll be heralded as a success no matter -what- happens.

didn't Ock once held Felicia down with his tentacles while his and the Owl's goons shot and speared her? It'll be interesting if he remembers, esp. since he seems to have forgotten that he once tried to marry the woman who is now technically his aunt!

@mickeymayhew: yea, OtchiNiTenshi might be right, cause when I read that SSM #20 was going to be 'bigger than #698', my brain went blank until I finally thought: this is gonna be TERRIBLE. AGAIN!!! I'm gonna enjoy when Spidey 2099 comes into the picture but this comment stood out for me.

Cause Option 1- Black Cat would realize from the get go -not when she's lip-locking w/ him- that Spidey really isn't Spidey or that he does something in front of her to show that he isn't the real deal. This is what I want to happen, but...

Opt 2 is the one that would officially irk me for 'Superior' Spider Man and would prove that Black Cat can't tell the difference b/w Superior and Spidey and wouldn't care -WHO'S- under the mask, villain or not -But that hasn't stopped her before at a time-

Point is: They go for Opt 1, they'll make SpOck a more big-headed 'hero' that's gonna have the hardest downfall ever in the long run

-OR-

Opt 2: It'll be a cheap shock factor for this Spidey wannabe at 'getting back' to one of Spidey's trusted (yet complexed) allies and make the hopefuls give up even more

Sad, really, but ey, at least I'm keeping up w/ Scarlet Spider. WIN! :)

I love the tepid applause. It's like listening to someone crack jokes at a funeral. People might clap out of sheer awkwardness and because the person making the jokes must have issues.

Also love that Slott was too gutless to show up, despite calling people out on the internet. No wonder he relates to Ock.
