SDCC 2013: Marvel's INFINITY Panel

Marvel dishes out some details about their upcoming big event.

The 6-issue cosmic event INFINITY doesn't come out until August, but today Marvel decided to chat a bit about Jonathan Hickman's story and how it'll spill into other titles.

  • "It is the biggest story we've done -- it spans Galaxies."
  • "Some of the craziest stuff we've ever done in comics."
  • Charles Soule says beginning with THUNDERBOLTS #14, they're going on training missions to learn to work together. Punisher's first mission brings him to New York and "it all goes crazy, really, really fast."
  • Zeb Wells says writing NOVA is a lot of fun because it's a character still learning how to be a superhero. Says this is the part of the arc where Nova has to stop being a kid and deal with the responsibilities of having that helmet.
  • Regarding SECRET AVENGERS, Nick Spencer says it's "only going to get bigger from here." By the end of issue #6, we'll see the team in a very different place.
  • The panel went over the basic details surrounding INHUMANITY. In case you previously missed the announcement, it's Matt Fraction/Joe Madureira and takes place after INFINITY. Deals with the millions of inhuman descendants on Earth gaining powers and the Inhuman's dividing.
  • Rick Remender says UNCANNY AVENGERS will focus on the consequences surrounding the team's inability to work as a unit.
  • Steve McNiven jumps on UNCANNY AVENGERS in November (issue #14).
  • Remender says Ragnarok Now deals with everything we've seen in the history of the X-Men and Avengers. Says there will be a large body count.
  • Sam Humphries on Avengers AI: stakes get higher, Vision takes a journey to the Diamond, the homeland of artificial intelligence. We'll see the world through their eyes and how they view humanity.
  • AVENGERS: ENDLESS WAR TIME graphic novel by Warren Ellis & Mike McKone.

  • Fan asks if The Avengers had any influence on INFINITY. Axel says no. "We do our thing, we do theirs. We're under no pressure to jump through hoops." Mentioned they know what's happening in Guardians of the Galaxy and they're hoping to familiarize more people with Bendis' comic.
  • Panel implies INHUMANITY will be new reader friendly -- reintroducing who the characters are and their relationships.
  • Panel asks a young fan who his favorite character is. The kid replies Thor and they say they'll put "some cool moments for Thor in INFINITY just for you."
  • Fan asks if the events with Galactus over in the Ultimate universe will impact INFINITY. The panel doesn't deny it and says an overlap would make sense.
  • Fan asks if the cast in UNCANNY AVENGERS will get better. Remender says it'll get smaller and there will be a character switch up in #22.
  • Reader says a lot of Marvel's modern events have felt underwhelming and said Age of Ultron's ending was lackluster. Axel says he knows AOU has brought about some controversy, but the ripple effect is big and will give us a lot for years to come.
  • Fan asks if the older New Warriors will show up in NOVA. Zeb says yes.
  • "Where's Doctor Doom and will he go up against Thanos?" Panel says "we love us some Doom." They say he's in play in both the short term and long term.

Not much better than DC's

Bring the old school comic book epicness back please.

I'm glad someone said about the events being crap, nobody ever asks good questions at these things

I'll predict Scarlet Witch gets killed off. I'm looking forward to Infinity. I usually don't get excited about events, this could convert me if it's done right.

At least someone asked about Dr. Doom.

Does Marvel ever have an event NOT going on?

"Reader says a lot of Marvel's modern events have felt underwhelming and said Age of Ultron's ending was lackluster. "

Why are the marvel fans so disrespectful to the hands that feed them? Lmfao!

What's a Mr. Marc Spector doing during an event like this?

Maybe I'll get it in trade another time, but I won't buy these major event comics if this is the 3rd major event in a single year.

@captainhoopla: They can't kill the Scarlet Witch right now, cause she is currently an important member in Uncanny Avengers.

I'm just happy Thor is going to get some good moments in there.

Meh.

i just want this to lead to seeing some more moon knight, and iron fist.... there is currently a disturbing lack of said characters.

@thundergodswrath: As long as Rick is writing it, Thor will definitely get good respect, he might job to Sentry though given its re-introduction of a character, who was well killed for being too powerful.

Agreed. These panels are so often just an excuse for everyone to kiss up to whatever company is in question, serving no purpose other than to give that company an unearned ego boost. What fans need to realize is that when the executives and creators don't receive anything but blind praise from them in person, the only logical conclusion they can come to is that their product is perfect and any criticism they hear second hand is just an insignificant group of trolls who hate because it's cool. I could be wrong, but I would guess that the overlap between avid convention attendees and avid internet commenters is actually quite substantial.

It's a moot point though, because even if every single one of the over 100,000 people at SDCC were to personally go up to the Marvel booth to demand they improve the quality and reduce the quantity of events, it wouldn't matter if the sales stay as high as they are.

@killemall: That is true, but I have a strong feeling Marvel is going to bring back all the horsemen to life. There are rumors of Wolverine dying soon, so Daken will likely replace him, Banshee will join All New X-Men, Grim Reaper will reunite with Wonder Man, and most likely become good, and well Sentry...he uh might get an on-going lol. At the Sentry's funeral they did hint that he was going to come back, when the robot said he will be preparing for the Sentry's return.

I'm starting to think this event won't be very good

Dafuq?

Didn't Marvel just finish a big event?

Inhumanity sounds very interesting. Black Bolt should appear in film. I'm sick and tired of that stupid child Nova, bring back Richard Rider already, and I'm noticing Marvel are gaining a terrible habit of bringing back the same old characters over and over for their major story arcs, i.e. Norman Osborn, Thanos, Ultron to name but a few. Why not revamp Graviton or someone different for a change?!

Can't say this interested me really, I've not followed an event since Siege. I think it would benefit them in the long run to focus on smaller, one title driven mini events than the constant pushing thing into overdrive every year with so many crossovers, it becomes tiresome.

Oh Jon, you are my long lost brother. <3

Anybody feel like they're going to go an Inhuman (as opposed to Mutant) route in the movies?

This'll probably set up Phase 3 of films, similar to AOU setting up Phase 2.

Another big buildup. Some big action. At least 1 character from the main rotation will die. Then after the next arc starts, in typical modern Marvel fashion, things will slowly work their way back to the status quo.

I am also tired of these secondary characters (Banshee, Daken, the new Nova, Moon Knight) getting either pushed or brought back while great characters like Black Panther (T'Challa), Silver Surfer, Quasar (Wendell Vaughn) are either used in poorly written plot device scenes, as punching bags, or not at all.

I really am becoming more and more of a DC fan as of late - never thought it would be the case.

I wanted to get some Hulk info during these arc's but I guess there isn't any.

Galaxies? Compared to story arcs that have delved into multiverses, omniverses, as well as the entire universe multiple times? Even the name "Infinity" rings of redundancy.

I do share your intrigue of the possible matchup between Thanos and Doom, however for all accounts Thanos should be the superior, but I never count Doom out of anything.
