SDCC 2012: DC Comics: Justice League and Green Lantern Panel

What's going to happen at Justice League and Green Lantern this upcoming year?

We'll start in 10 minutes or so.

1:45PM: John Cunningham comes up once again to talk about the We Can Be Heroes campaign. Geoff Johns comes out first. Jim Lee comes out now. James Robinson and Nicola Scott walk out. Tony Bedard comes out. Francis Manapul and Brian Buchelloto comes out, and then Brian Cunningham. Justice League 12 and the cover is on the screen. The end of this arc is the end of the first year as the Justice League. Some members have quit and Johns says the second year is about how should be on the team. Jim says he forgot to draw Aquaman's gloves on the cover, everyone laughs after Geoff says "the gloves are off."

1:55: Issue 0 cover of JL on the screen. Shazam is on the cover and Johns says he'll join the team next year. Tony Daniel comes on for a two part story that reintroduces the Cheetah. JLI cover on the screen. Johns says it's a Booster Gold story that Dan Didio wanted to tell, and it is the last issue of the book. Green Lantern 0 on the screen. The character has a gun because it's his "backup," states Johns. The zero issue will let everyone know who he is. Van Sciver will be drawing the annual, and "the Guardians are total dicks" says Johns. Rise of the Third Army. The Manhunters were the first army. The Lanterns were the second. The Guardians create a new army, says Johns, and the problem is free will. The Guardian wants to destroy free will.

2:00: Jeff Lemire, JL Dark writer shows up. GL Corps 0 cover on the screen. Johns says it sets up the fall of Guy Gardner. He then says he shouldn't have said that. GL New Guardians 0 on the screen. Tony says by issue 12 we'll find out why the rings came to Kyle. In issue 0, you'll see more first string characters. Kyle has shown he can access the other rings, and this issue is part of a quest to master all those. We then see the cover to 13, nothing incredibly special.

2:10: Red Lanterns 0 cover. Looks pretty cool. Johns says we'll see more of Atrocitus' beginnings. It factors into Third Army heavily. The Third Army leads to something bigger. Brian talks about Flash 0. Francis says they'll go over him growing up. Brian says they'll get deeper into Barry's psyche. Updates every 10 minutes now. The internet here is now terrible. Earth-Two 0 cover on the screen. James says it takes place before issue one. It's an adventure of the trinity, but it's more than the trinity. It's actually eight wonders. There's Mr Eight who fought with them, and he eventually became the villain. Cover for October's issue. Alan Scott and Grundy fighting. It's going to be a 6-issue story, instead of 5. The cover we see is when we see Alan Scott start to use his powers. Issue 5 will be the first appearances of Wesley Dodds, and he's Canadian... Thank you! Nicola has lost her voice. She says they don't need to tie-in to anything. She says the Grundy fight issue (5, I believe) is the best one yet.

2:15: Nicola did all the redesign work, according to Jim Lee. He tweaked it here and there, but it's mainly her work. JL Dark 0 cover on the screen. Jeff Lemire says the dark books are pretty disconnected from the rest of the mainstream universe. This issue boils the issue down. It focuses on Constantine. A younger, more arrogant Constantine. Jeff says there will be new members: Frankenstine, Timothy Hunter, and Aemesthyst. We're seeing come great looking covers now.

2:20: Questions: Are we going to see other JSA members in Earth Two? John says yes. He wants to roll them out slowly, but you all know that if you listened to John on the podcast last month. Missed a bunch of questions because of the terrible wifi. One person asks if there will be a Batman: Earth One volume 2 book. Geoff says he and Gary Frank are working on it now.

2:25: Geoff Johns and Jeff Lemire will be working on a Justice League story together. What aren't they happy with with the new 52? Jim says they don't really discuss what they're not happy with, but they do have guidelines to follow. They don't focus on negatives, but they continue to work.

2:35: The internet is fighting me like Ishmael against Moby Dick. It's a constant struggle. Sorry guys. IS anything from Flashpoint coming back? Johns says they're no plans right now. When will Martian Manhunter be in JL? Johns says next year. Will Barry be a Blue Lantern again? No. Will Blue Beetle be on Teen Titans? No, but there is something big happening to him in the near future. JLI Annual for Blue Beetle stuff.

2:45: Lots of "where's this character" questions. Lots of "we don't know" answers. Where's Plastic Man? No answer. Where's Wally West? Brian says "he's somewhere." Man, these questions are insanely repetitive. Very few people ask real questions.

Bye bye guys!

Awesome.

Thanks for posting this info. Can't be easy

Ah, so apparently, Justice League didn't jump to present day with the end of the first arc? They're still in the past somewhat, about 4 years ago or so?

Shazam on J.L?

I can't breathe. He is FINALLY getting the respect he deserves.

GO DC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

John on the podcast??

@Jonny_Anonymous: I sort of read it like that at first, too, but notice how Johns says that the end of this arc is the end of their first year as the Justice League, not on the Justice League. So either that's a typo or the Justice League stories have been taking place in the past. Also, why would Johns have to say that #12 was the end of the first year writing JL, it seems sort of self-evident, doesn't it?

The only complaint that I have about the New 52 is that they don't seem to have the continuity straight. DC needs to get all the writers and editors in a room together so they can hammer out what happened when.

@Zeeguy91: This arc ends the first year in Justice League, as in our time. 12 issues, 12 months, one year.

A membership shake up of the Justice League at last? Members actaully qutting the team in the New 52? Shazam and Martian Manhunter joining the Justice League in the future? WOOOO HOOO! Great news. And the Third Army looks set to be brilliant as well, looking forward to that. All good news with the books I read out of this panel.

I can't imagine hearing anything better during Comic Con.

I wish that they would just come out and give a definitive answer concerning Donna Troy and Wally West so that people can move on...either they exist or they don't or they have plans for them or they don't....just so people can stop asking about them

They either do have some sort of plan, or they literally have no idea what's going on with them.

I'm just getting tired of people asking about them and DC writers or editors giving these stupid smarta$$ answers

Yeah, me too. I'm starting to think they really don't know what they're doing with them, because if they did, they'd go with, "We have big plans", like they said with Raven.

What I'm wondering, is when the Shazam backup is going to end, and if another will take it's place. I figured #0 would be the finisher, but it's continuing in #13. Don't get me wrong, I love the Shazam backup so far, but I want to know when it ends, especially with the teaser of #0 XD! Now I'm wondering, is #0 just a triple-sized Shazam backup, or will there be a second plot?

Wesley Dodds! Awesome! I can't wait to see other JSA members.

Posted by Gambit1024

Dammit, I want answers on Wally West.

But Captain Marvel's joining JLA? I'll support that.

Posted by RedheadedAtrocitus

Good news on Batman, Earth Two #2. Wish I could hear more about Wally West but it seems nothing was said. Otherwise...Im liking all these developments. Especially about Red Latnerns.

Shazam and Marian Manhunter on the JL. I like Manhunter on Stormwatch. Hope they cross-over.

Posted by r3d_rob1n

Who is leaving the team for Shazam and Manhunter to join?

Posted by Zeeguy91

@r3d_rob1n: I don't think anybody has to leave really. The Justice League hasn't always had just seven members. For example, Meltzer's run had a team that consisted of 9 or 10 JLAers. I don't think that any one of the original seven are leaving, because I think DC really wants to push them as the Big 7. I think that its gonna be that some heroes become members and then leave the team until we get a set number of heroes that stay on as permanent members.

I think it could be Superman.

IIRC a lot of people think it might be Aquaman. If it is, I'd be really pissed, though. I want it to be either Supes or Hal. Maybe Cyborg, but JL is his book ATM.

Posted by Jekylhyde14

@Funrush:

Yeah, Cyborg isn't going anywhere. He's the human interest piece in this series.

Posted by Funrush

Well, I guess Hal is disappearing anyway, so him leaving wouldn't do much.

Posted by r3d_rob1n

@Funrush: It would make sense for Hal to leave the team briefly. At least until we see the outcome of the Third Army story.

Well, in the GL solicits for August and past, I have reason to believe Hal and Sinestro disappear or something similar in the annual.

Posted by Lvenger

@Kallarkz: Seconded. Which members do you think will leave to make way for them? My money's on Hal and Superman. Hal would make sense seeing as he's without a ring currently in Green Lantern and an extra two powerhouses would be too much in addition to Superman. Isn't Element Woman supposed to be joining the League at some point?

WOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

Then next year we will see Shazam and Martian Manhunter joining JL?? WOWW

Superman,Batman,Wonder Woman,Flash,Green Lantern,Aquaman,Cyborg,Martian Manhunter and Shazam.....who can deal with such a group?

Posted by JayMar89

i like shazam joining the league but i dont wanna see anyone leave in earth two id like to see one of the previous blue beetles
